this evening. these images give you something of an impression. selena our reporter on the ground. one man there seen showing office shirt. very influential tonight. >> that's for sure. we will get to olivia's euro -- olivier jiro in a moment. it was the australians who got the first goal with a low shot by craig goodwin nine minutes in. that was then followed by a player being taken off the pitch injured, which saw a lot of french fans gritting their teeth after all the injuries we have seen in the run-up to thisorld cup. he was replaced by his brother

who also played a big role in the french victory this evening. it was obvious there was a big absence in the midfield, but france quickly regained their composure and showed exactly why they are world cup champions. they've got an equalizer just on the half hour marker. five minutes later, they scored second. france really showing exactly why they are world cup champions. it was a second goal but olivier's euro -- olivier jiro. then a decisive pass really showing he is the one who is stepping up.

france. it is a clear example of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. government is basically hurting its own country and its own people. as you said, it is not clear exactly how many will be affected, but given the conditions and how bad the situation is for a lot of mullions, -- for a lot of malians, it is safe to assume every little bit of aid is helpful, and it's hard to imagine doing without aid. >> who stando gain from this? >> the mi junta stands to gain. this is popular with a lot of those in the region. the way they frame this is they understand -- they don't think that france has been an ally and in fact, in the press statement put out by the malian
3:40 pm
government, they closed france of doing aid with the purpose of dehumanizing malians, and they accused france once again of actively supporting terrorists in the country. it is of course an absurd accusation they have no evidence of, but this is what many think. in a way, it is politically several -- it is politically very satisfying. mark: it suits an agenda. it suits a certain narrative. >> yes. mark: is there a role played by russia in all this? >> i would not exaggerate the russian role. the russians are very good at sort of aggravating things and maybe stoking up anti-french sentiment, but the anti-french sentiment was already there, and i would urge french listeners not to blame pressure for this or blame russia for a lot. russians take advantage of the

situation and ultimately, i think the french need to look at their own conduct in mali, and the malian government needs to look. this is bween fnce and mali and russia is more likely spectator eating popcorn and watching all of this. part of this theory is that the french military was not only not helpful but was actively helping the terrorists. the feeling is there's much speaking about kicking the french out and also turning to the russians, the idea being russians will somehow do differently. they will do better and be more effective. i don't think this is the case, but the russians are effective in some ways, and arguably, they deal with the malian military

and do things different lead than the french, possibly better, in terms of information sharing. at least this is what malians tell me, well-informed malians, but you can assume 500 russian mercenaries cannot have the same effect as 5000 french troops on the ground. mark: here we are saying completely -- hear what you are saying completely. can i just move away from that and talk about people? there the people who stand to really be hurt by this, the people who need help? >> i think that is true. a lot of people are hurt i the departure of french forces. this is particularly true in eastern mali where security is
3:43 pm
getting worse and the government is poised to do very little about it. in terms of people who need the aid, they are the ones being hurt by this, and there's no plan to substitute for that aid, and i don't think there's a notion that the russians are going to be able to step in and provide a replacement. it sort of seems like if that's what malians are expecting, that seems like a very foolhardy expectation to have. it is not clear to me that the malian junta is reading the world news and is aware of what is going on in ukraine and how badly russians are being mauled and that the russians have the resources to provide because they are being decimated in ukraine. not sure the malian government

has no commercial flights to qatar and this would mean they would have to fly back with a completely empty plane. here is this tweet from november 14 from the deutsche football federation showing their departure from the frankfurt airport to their training camp in oman. you can see the team right here, they are posing in this lufthanza diversity plane. in reality, this photo was taken in a frankfurt airport before the german team took off to oman for training. we have this twitter post by sky sports football where we can confirm that the german football team arrived in qatar in this oman air aircraft, not a lift

shirt he is wearing before entering the stadium, so very frustrating news coming out of qatar, but regardless, there are many football fans that are finding ways to show their support for the lgbtq community, despite these qatari rules. for instance, virgin atlantic flew the england team in their ramble plane. we can see the logo right here with its lgbtq icon. finally here, we also see the former danish prime minister wearing this dressed in the colors of the rainbow in support of the lgbtq community. so many are finding ways to discreetly show support for the lgbt community. mark: very nice rainbow elbows from the danish prime minister. thank you very much indeed. great to see you. thank you to kate for the business as ever. pleasure working with you.
