this spread across the country as we have been reporting on a nightly basis. more on this story. a global affairs journalist and author of the book heartbeat of iran. thank you for being with us. i'm wondering from your perspective how you read this latest move about the strike. >> we are seeing the first day of the nationwide strike continuing well into this week. i don't want to call it conclude about the third day of the strike would be the seventh of december. that coincides with the student day in iran. an important day where people are scheduled in planning to come out in waves on some of the major streets in tehran and across the nation and take on the streets appeared today in tehran it was snowing but

despite that resells students at universities across town chanting, holding their signs and really showing will and pride -- and their cry for change. they are not going to stop. so many shops and stores were closed down nationwide. this only shows the admins of iranian people and their cry for change. >> do you think the fact that businesses are beginning to join in this protest, is that going to bring a louder noise in the corridors of power in tehran? it is one thing saying this is all about students. it is another thing saying this is about a certain community but to get business people shutting their doors, closing their shops, saying we are not going to do business but we are against what is going on in this country. you think that is going to make a louder sound in tehran? >> i spoke with a photographer

today in tehran and he told me he is losing so many jobs and commission simply because businesses are not working. those who are working are somehow tied with the government. the second thing he mentioned is that ordinary people have a very hard time making ends meet. people are struggling financially but despite that they are taking a stand of you 19 and whether it is not going to work or not taking commissions or shutting down their small business, large or small, they are doing it. they are doing this against a backdrop of a financial struggle. that is indicative of their mission of their tenacity in wanting this change. also today for instance a star footballer who had been quite outspoken in support of protesters, his case was ite

unique in a sense that you have public figures and celebrities standing with people calling for unity that have been effective but publicly the government has shut down his shop and restaurant. the government certainly is fearful and doing all it can to contain these protests but again, people are not stopping. against all odds and against all the challenges and struggles they are having. >> what you are pointing out is this is something that has happened to an iranian footballer who presumably was part of the protest we saw at the world cup receipt -- at the world cup refusing to sing the national antm. >> he used to be part of iran's national team. he is such a beloved figure and he is one of those examples of folks who inside iran is doing all can to bring people

together and stand against protesters and so many others are like him. i know we are going to talk about the morality police i assume but there are so many celebrities in iran from the sports, arts, cinema who are showing their opposition to the government and standing with the people in some shape or form. talking about this man's businesses were shut down by the government because he chose to strike as well. >> thank you for pointing out my lack of precision on iranian football. i appreciate being corrected on that issue appeared let's move onto the morality police. clearly the idea as is being reported but there is no absolute proof that this very controversial unit and of course a unit at the heart of the story regarding mahsa amini, it happened to her and how she came to be arrested because of her headscarf and her death in their custody. this unit might be being

disbanded. can you shed any light on this for us? >> this news came in the form of the soundbite over the weekend where iran's head of judiciary in a long speech alluded to the fact that the morality prairies -- morality police has nothing to do with the judicial system and will shut down by whoever started it. everybody took it out of isolation and became soundbite d many believe this is it. at is flective of the fact so many people want this apparatus to be shut down but when you speak to folks inside the country as i have been doing the last couple of days since the news broke they'll believe this is a pr stunt. it is important to note the government and no official government organization or

official had confirmed this. no one came out to say yes this entity has been closed. the morality police over the years has had different names and has appeared in different shap or forms but at its core we need to remember iranians believe this is another pr stunt to distract from the three days we have ahead of ourselves of protests and strikes. let's not forget iranian people's cry is for changes that extend far beyond their resentment of this archaic establishment and the reality police. -- the morality police. we have to understand the iranian government is as we speak arresting protesters. there are thousands of innocent iranians in prison for absolutely ludicrous charges. this is at a time where this

blurred out here as well by chinese state tv in order to hide mask lists orders during this - maskless supporters in the world cup. >> truth or fake? >> in the two week we found this logo right here that belongs to the chinese version of tiktok. this username right here if we zoom in is a chinese channel that belongs to the china media group. in their account we did not find any video of the world cup that broadcasts blurred bleachers as we sell on the twitter claim. we have this comparison here of images we saw appeared these blurred images we saw on the viral claims and these ones here. these were broadcast by chinese

state tv where we see none of these images here, none of them are blurred and they did indeed show maskless supporters. this video here on twitter that alleges to show images from chinese state tv censoring will matches is edited and is a fake. >> can i first of all applaud the fact we are showing welsh fans cheering which is a great thing to see at the world cup so there we go. these findings can be dash cam he really say china is not censoring the world cup in any way? >> we simultaneously watched the french tunisia match on a chinese state tv metal and a local french channel to compare how the matches were broadcast and to verify if there was any sort of censorship. both versions we found on the french and chinese channels.

these are images on chinese state tv channels of tunisia fans celebrating the goal of their team. this is on a live broadcast where you can see they do indeed show these maskless supporters on cctv. our shanghai correspondent found replace on cctv to cut away from images of supporters. all the close-ups of supporters are carefully removed by the chinese directors. have some examples here from cctv and french tv for the denmark versus france match where they should french supporters whereas cctv would cut away to images of the french coach or this image here, supporters while in the same minute they would show the zoom out, the large aerial shot of the football field.
