and have him on their team. such was the importance of him and his magnetism, his importance to brazil. the president of brazil at the time had dedicated a national treasure with the desire to keep him stay put. he was the ioc athlete of the century in the 20th century. we've heard about the films, the music, the political life. he was one of time magazine's 100 most important people of the 20th century. his impact on football, sports, and the cultural political world is in total hard to overstate. >> what kind of reaction are we expecting? >> we have had a couple. the news came through just an hour ago, so not too many notable reactions just yet. name mark said that he transformed soccer into an art.

of attacks across ukraine. defense forces shut down most of the estimated 100 incoming rockets and drones but some still struck their targets. the capital kiev was left without power. >> trails of smoke across the sky as missiles battle the country. kyiv residents shelter below the streets in the metro. in scenes reminiscent of the early days of russia's invasion. the mayor of kyiv remains defiant saying the people of ukraine will never give up. the russians want to bring depression. especially right now, christmas time. year. the russians want to bring us to

my granddaughter called crying and said her windows were broken and someone's house was on fire. we dropped everything and came running and saw everything the animals had done. they are fascists. >> military officials say dozens of missiles were fired at key infrastructure targets but most were intercepted by air defense systems. belarus has summoned the ukrainian ambassador after he claimed a missile entered its territory. almost one year into the war, people across ukraine are now seeing 2022 and the same way it began. >> earlier i spoke to correspond in kyiv and asked her to describe aftermath. >> it was heartbreaking because

there were several houses that were completely destroyed. i could see people standing in a state of shock. they had lost everything, their entire lives. they had saved up money for years to buy their little houses in the outskirts in a quiet neighborhood and within seconds, everything got shattered. that was really shocking to see for them. there were three people injured including one seriously including a 14-year-old girl. it was a scene of devastation. unfortunately, those are very common scenes. this was not the first time we covered at that kind of attack, but it is always heartbreaking to see those people having lost absolutely everything within seconds. >> can you also give us an update on the situation elsewhere in ukraine?

>> that was a massive attack launched by russia. ukrainian authorities talk about 120 missiles launched this morning. around key cities in ukraine. one place two people died. seven people got injured. in other cities in the western part of the country, and of course here in kyiv the damage is considerable with 40% of the population deprived of electricity and heating in this cold part of the year. they are also deprived of running water because the infrastructures have been hit. >> this bombardment has been going on for months in ukraine. how are people dealing with the constant threat of russian missile attacks? >> they are coping as best as they can but to give you an

idea, when you go to the shopping mall most lights are off because authorities are saving energy for essential infrastructures such as hospitals. you can see behind me a city that is usually lit up at night, we have a christmas treat that you cannot see. also landmarks that you can probably not see because millions of ukrainians across the country are deprived of electricity. the mayor of kyiv said people keep on fighting and they are resolute in not being defeated but at the same time, they have to cope with the daily horror. it is scary to have every day the threat of a missile falling. to feel the wind is being shattered. they are resilient, but it is

concerns grow over his condition. the eu says mandatory covid-19 screening for travelers arriving from china is unnecessary. surging case numbers have left the u.s., italy, and other countries to test arrivals. italy has called on brussels to impose tests across the eu. china has scrapped some restrictions and is planning to ease more quarantine rules. i am pleased to welcome and infectious diseases expert at columbia university. do you think it makes sense to impose mandatory testing for people arriving from china? >> i don't think it's going to make a large difference. in the first place, it makes a difference what test you used. the antigen test for example might miss individuals who are infected. you can start travel during the

time when the virus is evading in your body. we might miss it with an antigen test. the pcr tests are most were -- much more reliable. i think things need to be revisited. in addition, what we have learned over decades with the sorts of illnesses is that they are typically already within those countries that are trying to protect themselves at a time they impose the sanctions. i imagine this variant is already circulating in europe and the united states. >> the cdc believes china is not being transparent enough ensuring data in order to have a real picture of how many cases there are and a potential for a variant of concern entering the united states. you were allowed to travel to china in 2020 to investigate the origin of covid. how justified you think u.s.

concerns are? >> i think transparency is an issue. i think transparency is a problem in china. we don't understand the full impact of outbreak. we believe it is nationwide and consequences. i never favor the idea of a shutdown and zero covid because it was not realistic. it is useful early in the course of an outbreak and allowing you time to vaccinate people. but that really is our first line of defense. >> what do you think the best approach is for governments? >> i think china is going to have a tremendous loss of life. it is very sad. it is much like what we had in europe particularly in italy. and the united states and new york where i live. it was an enormous burden of

football legend pele at the age of 82. seen by many as the greatest footballer of all time. i would like to get across to our journalist based in são paulo. he won three world cups. he must be a hero there. how are people reacting? >> it is so sudden. we knew this is going to happen for some time. we saw the brazilian national team with their banner saying it will soon at the world cup just now. still these things are changing by the second. more and more tributes pouring in as we speak. the greatest footballer of all time, king pele as he is known in brazil. it is still quite early to tell.

we haven't had any tribute from brazils incoming government. we can expect from the new government attribute coming in. we have seen one of brazils best known singers giving tribute. another tweeted before pele number 10 was just a number, afterwards it is something special in football. things are really emotional here in brazil right now. tributes are pouring in by the second as we speak. >> we are seeing pictures of the hospital where he had been sick and where he passed away. do we know what kind of plans will be made to commemorate him? plans for his funeral? >> we don't know yet. it's all too soon to tell.

i can imagine there will be days of mourning decreed. i wouldn't be surprised if there was a pele holiday. this man was an ambassador for football, brazils greatest known athlete, an ambassador for brazil. he will be dearly missed. even though we have seen this pretty much since the olympics in 2016. he has been ill for some time, but this comes as a terrible tragedy for brazil. like i say, it's too early to tell right now. there has been no process. his death was declared us than two hours ago. there has been no official process declared yet, but we can expect a large turnout to

he is leading the country's most part right and religiously conservative government in its history. thanks for joining us here on france 24. tributes are pouring in for pele , the legendary brazilian soccer player who died today at the age of 82. doctors say he died of organ failure resulting from colon cancer. he rose to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history. to get more of what he meant to the brazilian people, we go to our correspondent. >> football in brazil is a way the nation likes to feel avenged, and pele is a living embodiment or was until a few hours ago, a living embodiment of that. as a nine-year-old in tears, he listened with his father to the radio as brazil lost to uruguay. he promised his father he would make that right.

back in 1958. here is a look at his life on and off the field. >> a worldwide football legend has passed away. pele, the king, was widely considered to be one of the greatest football players in history with more than 1200 goals to his name. he was born in 1942 a modest family in brazil. following in his father's footsteps, he quickly found his calling and became a top athlete. at barely 15 years old, he became a professional footballer. his career then took off. two years later in 1956, he won his first world cup and became the youngest player in history to do so. he won two others in 1962 and then in 1970, becoming the only footballer in history with three world cups to his name. if he was playing for the national team hour for h own

club, he was recognized for his exceptional skills. he was also coveted by the biggest european clubs. while in the united states, he made the sport more popular and was even invited to the white house as the top score, the player was injured many times during his career. his career ended in 1977, and the king decided to use his talents outside of the field. he became the sports minister of his country and transfer -- transformed brazilian football, giving more rights to its players. in the year 2000, fifa awarded him best player of the century, and honor he shared with another south american football legend. pele also used his fame to defend international causes. he was particularly committed to education through unicef and also became a member of the olympic committee for the sport that he loved. towards the end of his life, his health was very fragile.

he had to undergo surgery in 2021 and had difficulty moving due to the multiple injuries he suffered on the field. >> tributes continue to pour in for pele. brazil's incoming president, lula da silva, reacted on twitter saying, there has never been a number 10 like him. thank you, pele. james, what have people been saying about the loss of this true sports legend? >> it has been two hours or so since we heard of his death. you just mentioned, the brazilian president putting out his message. of course, within the last few hours, the same associates in the sporting world have also been putting out those messages. santos put out a simple message saying that he was internal.

clearly, centers representing so much for pele because this is what he was about, so much pride managing to keep him as the story goes, and he was then declared a national treasure so he could then be bought off by larger european clubs, and keeping him in brazil was so important. santos forno putting out a message which will bring about so many emotions for fans. within the country, neymar, from one number 10 to another, putting out a message to pele. it meant so much, helping black people be able to play football

because of course, it was a different time when pele started playing. a lot of progression not just on the field but around it, which is pretty much what comes about when you talk about an athlete or a figure of his size within the world. it is not just about what happens on the pitch, is it? of course, there are many sides to all of this, but we look at these things, the changes and the way he managed to catch people's heart and soul. obviously, these amazing skills on the pitch. m'bappe, of course, no secret about the admiration between the two there. he put out this message, long live the king. he has made it clear that pele was a huge, huge influence on

him. and of course, the idea of who is going to take over pele's legacy. the source talk about what is coming up next, can someone match him? if you look at the 24-year-old, certainly doing well and on the right path. he is not alone, though. much further down the line in terms of career, lionel messi, recently after his world cup when also putting out an image of the two together. and cristiano ronaldo, big things, also sending out his condolences once the news was confirmed, as we feared, by his daughter. we spent a lot of time with him over the last months and years, especially around christmas and in hospital, the image that comes out from that, but of course, this was the news that we were fearing was coming.

going to be mourned by so many across the globe, not simply in brazil, not simply across south africa, but across the globe tells us just so much about the esteem in which pele will continue to be held. >> of course, we are seeing all these tributes pouring in for pele. what is your own personal reaction to the death of pele? >> he had been known well for quite some time, and the news broke during the world cup that pele had been receiving treatment. i'm in my early 40's now, and growing up, pele has always been there. i never watched him live. my dad, my grandparents, they watched pele, but his legend has

been able to be passed through, but if you think about the iconic imagery, when image that stands out for me is when pele scores brazil's 100th world cup goal, there's beautiful symmetry. the goal in itself is an unbelievable technique. but the celebration defines what pele is really all about. the look of unbridled joy on pele's face, the arm lifted, that will live on. plenty of images, plenty of moments for fans across the

globe, across brazil in his home city. thoughts, prayers with pele's family, friends, loved ones. those memories, there will be so many of those. for me personally, it is that celebration, scoring brazil's 100th goal, that unbridled joy. >> going to bring back in james mussina from our sports desk. what were you thinking they're listening to david weber? >> talking about pele on the field on the reactions he would have throughout the game. joy from him and joy from the stents, and it is the reason why people are watching football, to experience that. of course, the world cup -- as always, when the world cup comes about, you cannot go about it without talking to brazil.

into hospital. despite the prayers and good wishes, his condition had significantly worsened these past few weeks. with doctors becoming increasingly concerned. >> as brazil mourns pele's death, the nation is getting ready to swear in a new president sunday. authorities have already foiled one bomb plot against the incoming leader, lula da silva. >> a day of raids and arrests. investigations into an alleged military coup continued just days before the inauguration of president-elect lula da silva. brazilian authorities have been cracking down on a group loyal to defeated far right president who never officially conceded defeat and has pushed baseless claims that brazil's electoral system is faulty. this small but committed minority refuses to acknowledge

lula da silva's election victory and are calling for a military coup. just a few days ago, police in brasilia found a bomb before it exploded, a planned attack allegedly masterminded by bolsonaro supporters. the violence stems from a riot earlier this month, on the day lula's victory was certified. one thing is certain. authorities will be sparing no means when it comes to security for sunday's ceremony. >> 100% of the police force of the federal district of brasilia have been mobilized. both the military and civil police and also fire brigades, to ensure the safety not only of the president, but also foreign delegations and the public. >> while police continued their

raids and arrests, lula was finalizing his new government. it is a list of cabinet members that includes allies outside of lula's leftist party as he strengthens his coalition. >> next to ukraine, which is experiencing the biggest wave of russian strikes in weeks, moscow fired dozens of missiles this thursday across the country, damaging power stations and other critical infrastructure. at least two people were killed in kharkiv, ukraine's second-largest city. military officials say they shot down 54 of the 69 missiles that were launched by russia. earlier, we spoke to foreign affairs editor rob parsons who told us more about the conditions at the moment on the ground. >> big not been able to deploy troops effectively because of the mud. the rains have made it difficult to move about, but as the ground begins to harden, as winter sets in and temperatures fall,
