far from deterred by moscow's tough response, they say they are poised for another swoop. ron desantis expected to officially announce his intention to run for the white house. the florida republican will then go head-to-head with donald trump for the gop nomination. reaction and analysis to come. "live from paris." thank you very much for being with us. tributes to tina turner who has died at the age of 83. the white house has paid homage to the woman they say will be missed by millions. tina turner was born to a poor farming family in tennessee in 1939. that was the start of a remarkable story. she rose to fame in the 1960's.
3:32 pm
she was part of ike and tina turner, who had many hits and then went on to become a symbol for strong and independent women during her solo career. her voice and style made her one of music's most well-known personalities. let's get to the first of many tributes we will be paying this evening to tina turner. if french singer and radio tv personality here in france. tina turner passing away at the age of 83. tell us what tina turner meant to you. >> i just cannot believe she died. she was such a powerhouse. when we first discovered her on tv in america and there was the whigs, the short dresses, the legs.
3:33 pm
she sang, she shook, she was a hurricane. mick jagger was inspired by her moves. it is hard to believe that this powerhouse of a woman who had a de-year career is gone. it just does not seem possible. my main memory of her was in 1970 one with "proud mary," which was a cover song of creedence clearwater revival, which really put ike and tina turner on the map. mark: she was one of these people who had an amazing energy, as you say, and it seemed to basically leave her ageless. i recall being absolutely gob smacked by tina turner on tv, what a remarkable presence, what a remarkable performer. >> it is incredible because when she started out, a lot of -- like a lot of black singers, she started out in a choir in church and when she was only in high school, she started singing with ike turner, who had a group that
3:34 pm
was called the kings of rhythm, and very quickly, it was evident that she was stealing the show, and ike was quite jealous of the fact that she was the star attraction, it was not him playing his guitar, and it soon became the ike and tina revue. the rolling stones had them open for them in the 1960's. so, yeah, she was larger-than-life. in fact, ike beat her, as i'm sure everyone remembers, and broke her jaw. she finally escaped from him and reinvented herself at age 40 when she decided to come to europe and had her big break with her album "private dancer" which included the song "what's love got to do with it," and she
3:35 pm
gave up her american passport and became swiss, and she had an incredible career, a second career in europe. mark: that strength you're talking about, you mention her marriage to ike turner. she survived that and have the strength to get out and divorced him and as you say, reinvent herself. do you think that in many ways she provided some kind of a benchmark, some kind of inspiration for other women going through those kinds of problems? >> i'm sure she did. she wrote an autobiography. there was a film. she talks about the fact that she inspired people by her dance. she was working her but off. she knew she had to work, so she inspired women at the time in the 1960's with women's liberation and, yes, she inspired all young women of today and even men, i would say, just to get out there and defend

yourself and do what you have to do, basically. mark: what will be your abiding memory? a song, an image? what will be your abiding memory of tina turner? >> i think it will be acid queen that she play in the rock opera. she was incredible in 1975 and as always, the beginning, "proud mary" in 1971, an amazing song. and if you have forgotten it, check it out as soon as you turn off the show. mark: we will be playing as many as we can get hold of throughout the program. thank you for giving us your thoughts on this at passing of tina turner, 83 years of age. what a remarkable artist and what a remarkable woman she was. we will be paying tribute to tina throughout this program. thank you very much for giving us our first assessment of the power, the presence, and the legacy of tina turner. let's move onto the rest of

world news. france 24 has spoken with a member of the anti-putin russian militia. their interpretation of the situation is very different from the line that russia is spinning. the fighters say they are ready to strike again in part of russia's threats of a harsh response. they say the only help they had from ukraine was purely logistical. >> greenlight, obviously, yes because the troops are part of the ukrainian military. one thing is the green light, another thing is organizing,
3:38 pm
assistance, and steering the operation. none of this has happened. not a single ukrainian soldier has entered russian soil. we came to liberate our land. >> what support did you get? >> medicine. obviously a lot of encouragement. >> planning? >> we could consult with them. we said we think this would be proper attack on this, proper attack on that, what do you think? should we go here, should we go there, so we could consult with them. >> are you planning a wider operation? >> absolutely. this one is a success. >> the russians say they pushed you back. is that true? >> we left after 24 hours. we have had no since just to
3:39 pm
stay there. we retreated. i'm absolutely satisfied with the outcome of the operation. mark: let's bring in for analysis and senior lecturer and sick -- senior lecturer on security. how do you assist -- assess the situation? what are your thoughts? >> good evening. essentially it was a raid which lasted longer than the previous sally the volunteer corps had back in march. you may remember. the difference is i hear this one was larger, involved
3:40 pm
paramilitary units, the legion, and the volunteer corps. the legion may have hundreds of personnel. we don't know how many were used. the difference with this one was it was more organized and there was an immediate operations plan that went along with it almost immediately. with this, we were actually being updated in real time with drone footage, etc. i think there's three aims, essentially, for these operations. the first one, of course, is to fix russian forces ahead of the ukrainian counteroffensive, tied down as many forces as they can. the second is to show that we can bring the war to russia and onto russian territory, even on land using these paramilitary forces, these proxy forces,
3:41 pm
essentially, and finally, to embarrass putin because it's not a good look having russians seizing part of your country and fighting other russian forces. a great is you go in -- a raid is you go in, achieve some ground, and retreat. as we already knew, it is fairly thinly spread. it takes a while to respond to things. you are certainly going to be able to find some weak points. i don't think it really tells too much, but there is an interesting element to this. humvees, which are made in the u.s., and if one of those forces is used, it is not a great look for the ukrainians because they have given guarantees that anything supplied to them will
3:42 pm
not be used against russia. that has applied to the very capable systems like f-16's and storm shatter -- storm shadow missiles. perhaps there's more scope there. i think there will probably be some words said to get a bit more control over that. mark: indeed. clearly moscow's narrative is on one level. ukraine's tells another story. are you satisfied they are purely russians acting on their own pollution to do this? >> let's put it this way -- they are useful. the legion is essentially for prisoners of war or defectors, which are then being vetted and brought into the international legion, as the spokesman said. and then, the command structure of that is not clear.
3:43 pm
i actually don't know exactly what it is. it was interesting to hear him say that they were completely separate and autonomous. i don't have any more information on that. the core are much more associated with the ultranationalist far right, which there has been some presence in, certainly, but are as far as i understand much less integrated into the ukrainian military structures, but certainly, there's coordination between these two groups going on, so there's going to be some sort of relationship, but it's very difficult to pin down. i would say they are incredibly useful at the moment because it allows ukraine to strike russian territory in a plausible deniable kind of way. >> we heard them talk about the fact they can attack again. pressure's line officially as
3:44 pm
they have been pushed back and almost destroyed, which clearly is not the case. do you feel there will be more attempts? do you feel this will happen? >> that's what they are saying because they want to get russians to men that 40-kilometer strip. his is difficult to say. there's a lot going on as we are seeing probes, raids, attempts at sinking a russian boat in the black sea today. there's a lot of stuff going on. these are all shaping operations, trying to distract and deceive. it is all part of a buildup, really. mark: thank you for giving us that analysis of a sense of how things are playing on both sides of the fence. it is clearly, as you say,
3:45 pm
useful for ukraine to have militia in that area disrupting the army. thank you very much for joining us. we are watching for developments on the situation in ukraine for you. next, the u.s. presidential election scheduled for 2024, the latest candidate to declare is expected to be florida governor ron desantis, an outspoken governor, long seen as donald trump's leading rival for the republican nomination. he is set to launch his 2024 campaign this wednesday. the 44-year-old republican governor plans to announce his decision in an online conversation with elon musk, the chief executive of online social network twitter. musk says this is not a formal endorsement of desantis as candidate. >> it is a new form of power couple, tech multibillionaire and u.s. presidential hopeful.
3:46 pm
>> we are interviewing ron desantis, and he has quite an announcement to make. it will be the first time this is happening on social media. >> the tech tycoon says this is not a formal endorsement of the candidate, but the set of his desantis access to musk's 140 billion followers and could prove a boon for the struggling platform. musk's ambition is to transform twitter into a multiplatform app, but since his takeover, the platform is floundering. interactive initiatives have failed to make twitter profitable, a new role, then, for the platform. >> i am interested in x/twitter being something of a town square.
3:47 pm
>> a veteran of the rack and corn town, governor desantis boasts that he has loosened gun and limited access to abortion in florida during his first term. >> the stakes are high. i think what we showed in florida is that if you show bold leadership, if you pursue a bold agenda, you can beat these people. >> the twitter stunt is risky, not least because it ties his presidential bid to the famously unpredictable twitter ceo, but desantis hopes the association could raise his association next to the already infamous trump. mark: that announcement is coming up very shortly, to be done via social media network. elon musk and ron desantis. netflix is cracking down on password sharing. >> it is a major turnaround for the streaming giant.

the move came after netflix suffered its first-ever dip in subscriber numbers in 2022 amid stiff competition against the likes of disney+, amazon prime, and apple tv. the company has already introduced a cheaper ad-supported option in another effort to boost revenue, something its co-founder previously spoke out against. >> we are not in the advertising business. we have no advertisements, so our only customer is the consumer. >> the company had estimated that over 100 million households had shared login credentials with their friends and families. as of march this year, netflix subscriber count totaled 232 point 5 million worldwide. negotiators met again at the white house to try to resolve a deadlock but again failed to reach a deal. the two sides remained deeply divided over the issue of spending cuts demanded by republicans in exchange for raising the debt ceiling above
