as prime minister for second term increase. promises of institutional and economic reform. ♪ thank you for joining us, we are live from paris. in a statement to the nation monday, russia's president vladimir putin thanked wagner mercenary fighters and commanders who stood down following the aborted mutiny on saturday. putin is currently speaking and we will head to him. >> i would like to talk to you about the current situation and what now needs to be done. i would like to talk about the missio we have to implement for our nation.

anchor: that is the last bit of vladimir putin in his speech to the nation, saying he would honor promises he made following the rebellion allowing wagner fighters to relocate to belarus if they wanted or to sign a contract with the defense ministry, simply returning to their families. we will go over the speech. philip, first reactions to what vladimir putin has said? philip: we had reports that vladimir putin was gonna make several statements. we had one statement have an hour ago and now these images of him speaking. it's all a bit erratic and giving the impression this has been thrown together last minute, whereas we are talking about this happen 48 hours ago

to go forward and not face any charges. no mention in that address of the man behind it all, yevgeny prigozhin. we don't know if he is in belarus, where he was offered a place to go, we don't know if he is ill in russia, if he has gone back to ukraine. we only have the 11 minute audio from earlier today where he made it clear that what he was doing was not trying to orchestrate some kind of coup against the russian government, he was protesting against the way his fighters had been treated to the russian military and particularly by the chief of staff and the defense minister. vladimir putin making no mention of prigozhin at all in his statement, and as of tonight, no changes we can see in the military leadership in russia. two contradictory statements

from two men who don't get on with each other, the least you can say. doesn't look like any protest has been made to find a solution to what has happened. vladimir putin coming out of this pretty weakened. anchor: how will the russian people on the street be responding to the statements by putin in lieu of the events that have just taken place? philip: there are two ways of looking at that. the first is that a lot of russians are, i think, fairly fed up the whole situation and the war. they will roll their lives and want to get on with their lives, they don't want to get involved in politics. others have seen this kind of thing before, certainly the coup against mikael gorbachev in 1991. this kind of little cool of people is nothing new in russia

or particularly strange to russians. they say we will move on afterwards. i think what you have to remember is the information being given out by the russian media, state via, social media -- state media and social media cared up to protect vladimir and russian leadership. that's the most important thing. the information in the public will be in support of what is going on in ukraine from russia's point of view. it's very hard for the russian people to get in the deck to view of what is going on there, -- an objective view of what is going on there, which is why i think many of them will say it is business as normal as far as the kremlin is concerned, let's get on with our lives. anchor: very interesting. vladimir putin speaking, the latest images with the defense minister. we go back to yevgeny prigozhin.

name certainly the defense minister and chief of staff, both of whom he wants gone. that hasn't happened. i don't think there's much chance that he will suddenly shut up and disappear into the woodwork. that will also be a fly in the ointment for vladimir putin. if he goes to belarus, he will not be in the position of security because he knows the belarusian president is a close ally of vladimir putin even though putin has treated him with a certain degree of contempt from time to time. they are still very closely intertwined with each other. if he goes to belarus, he knows he's going to be within arms reach of vladimir putin if vladimir putin wants to deal with him. there have been calls for yevgeny prigozhin to be given a bullet in the head to shut him up as a result of his statements and what happened saturday. what we know is there has been
