end of day three of israel under attack is there casualties in the south in gaza and southern israel. the death toll heads toward 1005 hundred with foreign citizens among those killed, as well as israelis and palestinians. in the north, a new incursion launched from southern lebanon and hezbollah has confirmed deaths thereto. another alarming develop, a threat from hamas in gaza to shoot a hostage each time israel strikes buildings in the gaza strip without warning. let's bring on our first aghast, joining us live from tel aviv. not an expert or politician or militant, an ordinary citizen. her mother is being held by hamas. thank you for joining us. we appreciate your time and that you are speaking very difficult time for you and your family.
3:33 pm
you must be incredibly worried about your mother. >> yes, very much. it's a very difficult situation. basically my mother was kidnapped by hamas at 6:30 in the morning of a shabbat. hamas fired rockets and 9:30, there was no signal and she didn't enter, there was no way to connect with her and i didn't know what is going on. until today. 6:00 in the afternoon, i found -- people sent me video after the attacks.
3:34 pm
it was terrible. anchor: you have discovered for sure your mother was kidnapped by a video sent to you, assumedly made by her kidnappers, hamas. tomer: yes, i posted a picture of her on facebook and someone told me she thinks she saw my mother on a video. i told her to send me and it was her for sure. it was very hard to watch, to be honest. it's a very difficult situation. even in a war there are rules. they kidnapped mothers, children , fathers. basically from all of the agents that you think and they don't know what's going on. anchor: the only word you've had
3:35 pm
is this video you've seen. you can confirm it is your mother and it wasn't just your mother taken. i understand her boyfriend and his children. tomer: yes, right. my mother was with her boyfriend and he is also kidnapped and his children were in a different house. they are 12 years old and 16 years old. they were kidnapped too. their mother was on the phone with the little child and she heard him say i am too young, don't take me. the call ended. we are all very terrified and we don't know what is going on. anchor: i am sure we can all begin to appreciate what is going through your mind and how concerned you are.
3:36 pm
clearly you are waiting for news and no news is coming through. they were taken from a caput's -- kibbutz. tomer: yes. a lot of people died in the kibbutz, their houses were burned. anchor: you are saying what happened around your mother him a her boyfriend and his young children, 12 and 16, people were killed by the terrorists breaking into eventually kidnapped them? tomer: yes, a lot of people and we have images and videos. people find out on media. anchor: i am sorry to cut across you. this threat from hamas that they will shoot hostages, when you

hear that, i can't begin to imagine what must be going through your mind. tomer: yes. we are -- the only thing we can do is prayer. and leave that everything will be ok. we can only wait for the best. we don't know if it is true, if it is not true. we must think positive and leave that everything will be fine because we can't think badly, bad things. it's not doing good. we have to be positive. anchor: it's amazing you are positive and able to do this interview. we appreciate it and i'm sure the people watching have total sympathy with you. what would your message be to hamas? what would your message be if
3:38 pm
you could get that through to them? tomer: release the hostages. in a war, there are rules. there must be rules. we can't just do anything on our mind. there have to be rules. anchor: your sense is this has gone too far into this is beyond what would happen in a normal war scenario? tomer: yes. there are rockets but this is like something that is like a horror movie. i feel like i am not in the situation, but it is my situation. anchor: thank you so much for
3:39 pm
speaking to us, i appreciate that this is a difficult conversation to have with us. i think people will listen and understand what you are going through and what the other families are going through. joining us live from tel aviv. her mother, her mother's boyfriend and her mother's boyfriend's two children currently held by hamas and all the family waiting for a positive resolution. thank you for joining us. tomer: thank you so much. anchor: take care of yourself. tomer tal live from tel aviv. israel's prime minister is very much in the middle of everything going on right now. he spoke a little earlier. >> i promise you, dear israeli citizens, by the end of this campaign, all of our enemies will know it was a great mistake to attack israel.
3:40 pm
what we will do to our enemies in the coming days will reverberate with them for generations. anchor: benjamin netanyahu speaking a little earlier. we heard from tomer tal, whose mother is being held by hamas along with her mother's boyfriend and his two children. they were in a kibbutz rated by hamas. day three of the hamas attack on israel. there have been multiple deaths, something toward 1500 deaths at least, the toll expected to climb. this evening, more rockets from southern lebanon to is really territory. let's bring in our correspondent in jerusalem. what is the latest about this issue in the north of the country? reporter: well, for the past five or six hours, wouldn't even call them skirmishes but exchanges of fire.
3:41 pm
not consistent, not shooting at each other but mortar fire. a little while later there will be a response. what it began with is mortar fire coming into is really territory and then two trying to cross the border into israel, israel having enough of that, and they shot those people coming into lebanon. then hezbollah said they are not ours. we did not fire the mortar and perhaps they were linked to one of the palestinian groups based in lebanon. a short time after that, there was is really artillery fire into lebanon and hezbollah says its operatives were killed. i've just seen a report of a third report -- a third hezbollah representative killed
3:42 pm
and hezbollah says they will get revenge. we have seen fire from lebanon and for about the past six hours, that has been the pattern. israelis in the north of the country have been told to go to their bomb shelters. it doesn't augur well if you are worried about a second front. hamas was calling for a second front, i think they envisioned a conflagration here. i don't know yet if hezbollah wants another battle with israel, this skirmish is something i wouldn't have anticipated before the events of three days ago. anchor: indeed, it feels more like an escalation of the situation. in the south, we were just speaking to a woman whose mother has been kidnapped along with her boyfriend and his two
3:43 pm
children, ages 12 and 16, currently held by hamas paired she says that she has received a video which we have and are currently checking, but for all intents and purposes looks like it has been supplied by hamas and their media wing. it is a grim viewing, to be frank. we will try to process that into a broadcast format and put it on france 24 to show the extent of the situation. what is the state of play this evening? we understand israel has the towns that were attacked back under control but it's not really clear that everyone from the hamas side is out of the picture. irris: no, and more hamas elections from gaza came into israel today, either through the fence, which has not been secured or was not secured in the morning, or perhaps from a tunnel they were building that came up into one of the
3:44 pm
villages, and later in the afternoon they came in from the sea in a small boat, and landed in a village on the coast. all of today i have been reporting on consistent firefights between israeli troops and militants who have come from gaza. israel says it has captured or killed all of them but i'm not sure. they've not said categorically that the whole of the south of israel is back under their control. they say there could be one or two militants still around because they estimate anywhere between 800 and 1000 came in and perhaps there are some loan government. coming in from gaza there's also been rocket fire. in the gaza strip, intensive israeli airstrikes, so it has been a very fraught day. anchor: caught up in the middle
3:45 pm
of this, there are human lives. ordinary people end up being the main victims as always, and one can only begin to imagine the scale of the civilian casualties we are seeing. as part of that, the blockade that benjamin netanyahu is talking about putting on the gaza strip, he says that will be total and civilians again will suffer most. irris: that's right. there are only two borders to gaza, from the israeli side or the egyptian side. the israeli side will be sealed tight and that means no food, no fuel, no electricity, no gas, no water. you can imagine in a crowded place like gaza, what that will mean for civilians who are dodging terrible airstrikes from the sky.
3:46 pm
the only border open to them will be the one to the south in egypt. that is open and shut. in is not somewhere they can simply go across at there will. -- their will. some days it is closed altogether. the question is will egypt open the border for refugees to flee or will it open the border for humanitarian aid to come in? you cannot imagine it will be very long before there will be a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe in gaza if this blockade is maintained. anchor: irris, thank you for joining us and the clarity you bring to the story every time. take care. we understand also from turkiye, the president is sending humanitarian aid to the gaza strip and we will bring you more on that as we get it. for the united nations, the
3:47 pm
situation is complex. not only the loss of life but the ongoing threat of hostages taken by hamas paired it's likely they will be used as human shields to prevent airstrikes and there is also the threat to kill a hostage anytime israel fires on gaza without warning. the secretary-general of the u.n. had this to say. >> i am deeply distressed by today's announcement that israel will initiate a complete siege of the gaza strip, nothing allowed in, no electricity, food or fuel. we already have reports of israel striking inside gaza as well as residential towers and a mosque. anchor: that was the secretary-general of the united nations speaking about the issue of israel putting this total blockade on the gaza strip. he is talking about the consequences for civilians. the situation in southern lebanon is the towns that were attacked by hamas militants more
3:48 pm
or less under israeli control but israel saying there are still hamas militants in the vicinity and they are urging people to take care. in the north, rockets from southern lebanon, exchange of fire according to our correspondent in jerusalem, and israelis in the north of the country warned take shelter. let's turn our i to business development the economic consequences. israel has declared a total siege on gaza and carrying out intense airstrikes in response to the hamas attacks, pushing palestinians further toward the brink. yuka: almost 140,000 people, palestinians from the gaza strip, taking shelter with the united nations palestinian aid agency according to the u.n. secretary-general.
3:49 pm
we will take a listen to him again while condemning the attacks by hamas, he's called on the international community to provide urgent humanitarian support for the more than 2 million palestinians who have already been living under 16 years of blockade in gaza. >> the humanitarian situation in gaza was bad before these hostilities and now it will increase exponentially. medical kill it meant, food and fuel and other supplies are needed desperately. yuka: the economic situation in gaza has been dire for years with half the population living in poverty and more than 60% going hungry. we take a closer look. reporter: the area's border crossing, the only pedestrian passageway out of the gaza strip and into israel. it is used by the roughly 18,000
3:50 pm
palestinians lucky enough to have israeli work permits. jobs in israel in high demand because they can pay up to 10 times as much as similar work in gaza. since 2007, the territory has been under an israeli/egyptian blockade that has adversely affected its economy. the u.s. estimates that from 2007 through 2018, it has cost gaza $16.7 billion. the coastal strip is home to around 2 million people. the unemployment rate hovers around 50% while the poverty rate is 65%. officials say the strip exports more than $130 million worth of clothing, fish, produce and other goods in a year. israel also keeps type control of the coastal enclave's fishing zones. under the oslo accords, they extend to 20 nautical miles but
3:51 pm
in reality israel enforces a restriction of just three to six nautical miles, severely hampering gaza's fishing industry. before the attack on israel, the two sides had been pursuing an unofficial economic peace with the israeli government agreeing to issue more work permits, expand the fishing zone and allow the enclave to export more goods and import more equipment. yuka: meanwhile, there's been confusing messages coming out of the european union as it mounts a response to the crisis. it said the eu would suspend all payment of palestinian development aid with immediate effect. the eu is a major donor and the suspension of the program would have dealt a major blow to palestinians. however, hours later, the eu issued a statement backtracking the announcement, saying
3:52 pm
instead, its members will review its aid program while suspending new budget proposals. >> the commission is announcing today it is launching an urgent review of the eu assistance for palestine, in addition to the existing safeguards, it is to ensure that no eu funding indirectly enables any terrorist organization to carry out attacks against israel. yuka: global oil prices remain elevated following the assault on israel. the benchmarks are up about 4%. there are fears the conflict spiral into a larger proxy war, especially if iran takes action. that is it from the business desk. anchor: thank you very much. it is affected i what is happening in israel right now. let's turn to truth or fake,
