>> you're watching live from paris world news analysis from france 24. i am marco and their -- these are the main news headlines. the war in the gaza strip becomes more fierce as israel messes troops on the border. the government is seen as excelling towards a ground invasion of gaza. a second front in the making in the north, rocket fire from south lebanon hitting the port city of haifa. they're concerned about hezbollah's attack. a reporter is standing by in tel aviv.
3:31 pm
>> fears over the safety of the 150 hostages being held after being kidnapped on saturday, there are french israeli families affected and children missing. to end at six 3000 people in gaza have fled their homes in the face of the israeli onslaught. corridors of escape have yet to be agreed. the union -- you and calls for spillover to be avoided and attacks on civilians to be stopped immediately. this is live in paris. >> to keep from stripping with us. day five of the israel hamas will as we do with going tension
3:32 pm
across the middle east. a rocket launch from south lebanon has struck haifa, more details have emerged with the hamas rates him kibbutz new the border -- on -- raids unto kibbutz near the border. the death toll is rising to 1100 according to gaza officials, but israel has counted 1500 militants. israeli troops are gathering for a ground operation and there are fears of the people caught in the middle, 200 623 thousand people have been forced to flee their homes already. we will bring you the latest news and analysis throughout the program. let's begin with luke in israel, who has been to the scene of one of the most horrific incidents so far in the war. it happened at a kid puts, the scene of a massacre reported last night. this is the -- near the site of another massacre.
3:33 pm
tell us about the scene that you found when you went there. >> it's just two kilometers from the gaza border, and mostly closed off. it is close to gaza. it is extremely dangerous to travel through the area. we were taken there by the israeli armed forces with a convoy of journalists to show them, at least briefly, some of the damage that had been done to the cabinets. there is the smell of death hanging over the area, a thinking cloying smell that got into your nostrils. as we drove past week drove past a pile of bodies that we believed to be hamas militants piled up away from the grounds. you could see vehicles that had been full of bullet holes, there
3:34 pm
were brass cartridge shells across the floor almost everywhere. and some of the buildings had been gutted by fire or destroyed by explosives. it was when we started speaking to the israeli soldiers who were there, there were a lot of personal -- personnel around and armor who have moved on with operations, we were able to speak to quite a few of them, and what they had to tell us was shocking to say the least. they spoke of people who tried to hide in their shelters, secure shelters from rocket attacks. when the militants were not able to get them, they would burn them out. they spoke to us about people being massacre, butcher. i can't find any other word to use, with knives. they were tied up and shot. they had hand grenades tied to them. put inside their clothes. we are literally at a loss for words to describe it.
3:35 pm
the entire site is now, at least in israel, becoming synonymous with the phrase hamas atrocities. it seems hard to see how you can call it anything else. the major general of the israeli defense forces spoke to media at length and said that israel was now left with no other choice but to act. another soldier that i spoke to separately said that the people who hated israel would be made to feel them again. no one should have to feel this way. these are his words. nobody should have to feel this way. but we are going to leave our feelings and hearts in israel. and they are going to fierce again. powerful words from a simple soldier who is like many people here hoping very much that there is going to be a ground invasion
3:36 pm
of gaza for the first time since 2014. there has not been official confirmation yet. the rumors are mounting. there has been consistent talk for days that some kind of action might be forthcoming. >> look, that visit to the keybank clearly the heart of darkness. very disturbing. you have also been to another town and the gaza border, which has often been in the news over the years, receiving shelley from the gaza strip. three hamas militants have been killed there, neutralized is the word that has been used, tell us about your visit there. >> it's a relatively large town, about two kilometers from the gaza strip. and that means that it does historically come under regular
3:37 pm
rocket fire from hamas there. as we came through on wednesday morning, it almost felt like a ghost town. there were explosions in the sky, we could see rockets coming in, there is an application that we use that gives out alerts for the places where you are that you get to cover. with the city being so close you just have 10 seconds to get to cover. there are concrete blocks at every bus stop and regular locations, giving people a chance to get to cover. if there is indeed an attack. when we were there, on the iron dome defense system, most of these missiles did manage to get through. there were pieces of the outskirts of town that had been very badly damaged. they had trails of smoke going through the air. and other areas have been
3:38 pm
evacuated. but there are still people in that town. what happened, as he mentioned, these infiltrators and hamas militants, being neutralized by the israeli army, there had been another one earlier in the day. when that happens, there are people, they go into their own home and the advice of the government is lock your doors and stay inside. you see a lot of heavy police presence, heavy military presence on the street, people patrolling. and that is what they do to try to find these people and it shows this danger that is still there. there are tunnels indeed that israel has not been able to find. meaning that this danger is pretty much constant for the people still in the area. >> look joining us from tel aviv, thank you very much for that account of what you have
3:39 pm
seen today, disturbing it is. please be careful out there. it has been, as we heard, another day of rocket fire and fear. here in france 24, we have a new report. will bring that report as soon as we can. basically, a summary of what has been happening across the area, including the attack on the town of ashkelon, which included a hospital being struck and more rockets being fired from that region. let's bring our first guest for the evening, the founder and president of the alliance for the mentally -- peace in the middle east, joining us life from washington. the situation is you see it now, we hear a possible ground invasion about to be launched affront to the north and something from the east from syria.
3:40 pm
many things and many questions. what is your take on what is happening. >> notes for having me. i have to be honest, your lead in report kind of hit me like a ton of bricks because before getting to the situation, i have to tell you personally, my cousin was one of the 300,000 israelis: to defend against the attack. and he was killed. defending that city from the attackers on the terrorists. my good friend, vivian, who is a lifetime peace builder, lived in that kibbutz. she's missing. we presume that she is a hostage. as many times as i have seen the pictures and heard the stories, and there are so many more stories that have accumulated in such a short time, they're going to be spilling out for days, it only gets worse and the trauma continues. i wanted to say that is
3:41 pm
absolutely horrific. >> have a, can i stop you, and say to you that we are desperately sorry for your loss, sir. and we hope that it is of some comfort to you. you're awesome to close to you and this is the horrific reality for people going through. please continue, i'm sorry for interrupting. >> i appreciate the words. for anybody who knows or -- people being affected, give them your support. a call, text, he met. it makes people feel like their pain is known and that their experience is heard. and it helps them through this time. the experience i am sharing is unfortunately not uncommon. pre-everyone i know over there has been affected in that way within one degree of separation.
3:42 pm
in one way or another. that extends to palestinians as well, which touches on your question. unfortunately, this situation, and by that i made the initial attack, still seems to be ongoing. whether you're talking about expansion on the northern front or the terrorists who are still apparently, to some extent, roaming around inside israel. and the response has already begun. and the scale of this is nothing like we have ever seen before. that is really important to bear in mind, because we always look at the past to try to make a good guess about what to expect, and we really can only guess the scope and brutality of what occurred in israel's magnitudes greater than what we felt on september 11. the response, apparently, what is being discussed in israel, is that the goal will be to remove hamas from the scene.
3:43 pm
the challenge with that and the danger involved with the people doing the removing, is that there are 2 million people who live in gaza, civilians. and there in the middle of this, and hundreds of thousands are in shelters. the food and water and electricity have been cut off. there is really a mounting humanitarian crisis, even as the events continue, apparently, to develop and even possibly expand. and we have also been seeing some skirmishes in the west bank. there are a couple towns in the west bank where there have been skirmishes between local armed groups and the israeli army. and also, there have been settlers in the west bank who have gone on indiscriminate rampages and shooting at palestinians. there really is a significant
3:44 pm
risk that this could completely mushroom and explode. that's quite a thing to say because of where it started. >> i would like you to listen to the secretary-general of the united nations. he has issued an appeal towards side that it should not spill over into other conflict areas. we are talking about the possibility of a northern and eastern front with syria. the issue, of course, is humanitarian corridors. those civilians are out of the gaza strip to save as many lives as possible. let's listen to that. >> fuel, food and water, they must be allowed into gaza. we need rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access now. i want to thank egypt for its engagement with facilitating access through the crossing and
3:45 pm
making the airport available for keuchel assistance. there is no time to lose, every moment comes. >> the chairman of the alliance or middle east peace, his words, the humanitarian corridors are yet to be clarified. what do you expect from his arrival and his visit? >> it's an interesting question. his visit probably started with a couple big goals, which was to get eyes on the ground and also to extend the visibility of the support that the u.s. has been showing towards israel in particular, as a result of the attack that occurred over the weekend. i imagine that there will be practical discussions, as well, about the military backing and support that has been offered. also questions about hostages, because there have been a number
3:46 pm
of american hostages identified in addition to americans that were killed in the attack. i would suggest that those would be major subjects. and it is a little unclear, at this point, where the u.s. is going to come out on the humanitarian issues that you address. i imagine that will also be part of the conversation. there was a strong speech by president biden that was almost completely in support of israel and gave a nod to the humanitarian concerns. but i imagine that behind closed doors it's a larger conversation as they try to balance support for response that is focused on hamas with that risk that brings the certainty that there will be unspeakable numbers of civilians caught in the crossfire. >> thank you very much for joining us again, our deepest
3:47 pm
condolences for your loss of your family member. thank you for joining us. >> let's all pray for the israelis and palestinians that this ends as soon as possible with the least loss of life. >> fine words, thank you much indeed. >> there are at least 150 hostages, and the french prime minister confirmed that. there were several french children that were missing and feared to be among those snatched during the saturday attack. the hamas attack has been marked by silence, uncertainty and pain for the families affected. we will bring you more on that as we go through the program. time to turn our i to mounting costs on both sides, physical and financial. >> civilians in gaza are bearing the brunt with buildings bombed,
3:48 pm
power cut and supplies dwindling. meanwhile, some estimates have come out as to how much the war has hit israel's conference. the impact -- and the impact on the global economy. >> the devastating human because the days of fighting between israel and hamas is already clear. the economic impact is slowly emerging. following hamas's surprise attack, global oil prices jumped almost 5% on monday. record by fears of contagion in the region. at this stage, it's difficult to estimate the small global -- the effects on the economy. >> we are monitoring the situation in terms of economic impact that it could have on the region and beyond. we have to be cautious, it's too early to assess what the impact would be. >> what the final price tag would be is also uncertain.
3:49 pm
the war could be a $6.8 billion global, 5% of the gdp. the budget deficit up -- could go up by 5% of gdp as well. the cost would be shielded in part by dropping workers, 300,000. -- 300,000 reservists called in. israel is already familiar with heavy losses. the 2006 lebanon war cost them two point $4 billion, operation costs that continued through 2008 and 2009, amounting to 835 billion. the economy managed to bounce back quickly after those conflicts, but what happened this time will depend on how long the war goes on. >> global oil prices have come down after and research.

ways. both for investments and people who have gotten used to low interest rates. i think that those are the pluses and minuses there. i believe that wars are completely and extremely challenging. for central banks were trying to find a way out of a very difficult situation to a relatively soft landing. >> the european union is putting pressure on big tech to deal with fake news and harmful content flooding social media. the you -- the eu industry treat gave mark zuckerberg cut it for hours to inform the eu about how it is stopping such postings on its platforms such as facebook and instagram. under the use digital services act which took effect in august, large, companies are required to assess and report potential risks associated with their platforms. the letter came a day after he told elon musk that violence and terroristic content had not been taken down from twitter despite

3:54 pm
they also posted this review where we see these heavy airstrikes which take place either during the night or right before dawn, a series of blasts that users claim destroyed the gaza orthodox church. and then paul golding, leader of the extreme right party in britain made similar claims on twitter, saying that he has seen reports of the church being destroyed. one of the oldest churches at 1600 16 years old, and he posts a different video compared to the prior post where we see the inside of this historic church and the relics that it contains as one of the most historical century sites which users claim was destroyed by israeli airstrikes.
3:55 pm
>> the question remains, was this orthodox church really destroyed? as a result of israel he asked -- airstrikes. >> that's the question, our search letters to the original video published by turkish media, reporting on israeli airstrikes targeting civilians in gaza where they also hostessing the u.s. the one we have seen in other claims, and the same video but in broad daylight. thanks to this video that we see here during the day, our colleagues were able to geo-located exactly where these airstrikes took place in gaza city in particular thanks to this building in the bottom. this is then building located closer to a branch of the bank of palestine that we see right here, and the building in question is what we were able to

tell us about the airstrikes that we see in this viral video, tell me about those. >> contrary to the claims that we see in this viral video, it did not target the orthodox church in gaza, this did take place in gaza city near the bank of palestine, and we found further evidence that the strikes actually occurred in this densely populated area as is characteristic of gaza, but they also found that strikes to place in the vicinity of several schools according to their findings. however, the only confirmation that we have on this so far comes from the united nations secretary general antonio guterres who condemned israeli airstrikes that hit to united nations schools sheltering displaced families in gaza as some 137,000 people are currently sheltering in united
