♪ >> hello, this is the newshour life from doha. israeli airstrikes pounds gaza and the only power station and that strip stops working after a fifth day of bombardment. hospitals in gaza are overwhelmed. at least 1100 palestinians have been killed and thousands injured in israeli airstrikes.
5:31 pm
this video shows the release of an israeli woman and two children shortly after they were captured on saturday. and israel's prime minister says every member of hamas is a dead man as the country forms a wartime emergency government. we begin in gaza, where entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble. at least 1100 palestinians have been killed during the relentless campaign of israeli strikes. the only power plant has run out of fuel and essential supplies are already running out. as our medicines. reporter: a woman gives her baby a final kiss before he or she is taken away to an early grave.
5:32 pm
one glimpse of tragedy spread through gaza saturday. helpless civilians bearing the brunt of war on a scale they have not seen before. there has been no let up in day three of the bombardment of the enclave wednesday. these aerial shots show the extent of devastation. it is really airstrikes have reduced buildings -- is rarely -- israeli airstrikes have reduced buildings to rubble. electric and internet supplies are disrupted. >> we were residents of an area that has been entirely leveled to the ground. >> this is total annihilation. hundreds of palestinians have been killed and thousands injured. reporter: this hospital is one of roughly 20 in the gaza strip. it is at full capacity.
5:33 pm
it does not have enough staff or medicine to treat the wounded. the worry is a lack of fuel to operate generators. the total siege means no supplies can enter gaza. >> look behind you. along those streets and alleys, hundreds are killed and buried behind the debris. we have been abandoned by the arabs. the whole world is watching in the silence. reporter: tens of thousands of palestinians have lost their homes and have nowhere to go. border crossings between israel and egypt are closed. food and water supplies are running low. they are not facing just bombs and bullets, but hunger and thirst. entire neighborhoods have been raised. -- razed. they are calling for regional and international intervention. >> meanwhile israeli prime
5:34 pm
minister benjamin netanyahu has reached a deal with the leader of the opposition to form a emergency wartime government. netanyahu accuses hamas of beheading soldiers and slaughtering civilians and vowed a swift brutal response. >> we are fighting with our might on all fronts. we have gone on the offensive. any member of hamas is a dead man. hamas is isil and we will crush them and destroy them as the world has destroyed hazel. >> we have a reporter in west jerusalem. this was a show of unity between it three men with quite the history between them. can you give us some context about how remarkable it is these three have come together?
5:35 pm
reporter: it is remarkable, considering that bitter political divisions that had basically paralyzed israel for the past four or five years. five elections in four years shows you how divided the country is and how divided politicians have been. so when you see them together, the prime minister, one of his main political opponents, the head of the opposition party, and the defense minister, who was at odds with his own prime minister a few weeks ago during weekly protests around the judicial overhaul. at the time it was reported that the defense ministry and military and intelligence
5:36 pm
establishment was warning the prime minister that all these political divisions and domestic issues were actually distracting the country from its main problem, and that they were giving a gap for the enemies of the country to carry out some sort of action. his words somehow came true. the israeli public has been very angry at the political divisions for quite a while so to see that they managed under crisis to at least for now put aside all of their divisions and look at the task ahead is something that would bode well with israelis at this particular time. this is something israelis are good at when there is a crisis, when there is some sort of threat to the country, they manage to stand united in
5:37 pm
solidarity at least through the difficult time. and this is arguably one of the most difficult times israel has faced in 50 years or more. certainly a huge blow for the prime minister, who has always positioned himself as mr. security and the only one who can bring safety to the israeli public. he had his governing coalition and some far right members who have been quite vocal about their position towards palestinians, but within his slim majority at the israeli parliament and within his government coalition, he does not have many military exports so having the former chief of staff and former defense minister is an asset for the prime minister at this time. there is also another chief of staff part of the war cabinet,
5:38 pm
in the role of an observer who will also be an asset. so certainly at this moment, there is much to gain for the prime minister. >> thank you so much for that report from jerusalem. we have been keeping across the extensive damage caused by israeli rocket attacks on gaza. they started attacking saturday following the attack carried out by hamas. gaza's old city is an area that endured heavy damage from these attacks. these are images of damage to the suzy mosque inside the refugee camp close to the coastline. we have a reporter in gaza.
5:39 pm
will it be another sleepless night for those in during the ongoing bombardment? reporter: that is completely true. this neighborhood was extensively bombed last night by israeli air forces. hundreds of towers and buildings were leveled after the israeli strike targeted the place. gazans are in such panic and fear. they are afraid to lose their loved ones or wake up tomorrow and find there is no house or shelter. >> the only power plant has run
5:40 pm
out of fuel. and it is almost completely black out behind you. we hear that medicine and fuel are almost completely gone. is there a plan for when everything runs out? reporter: as you can see in the backgrounds, everything is black because they have shut off electricity on the gaza strip and there is a prevention of the delivery of fuel and other items. palestinians are coping by debating what other alternative sources they have that might not last long. temporary solutions will help them adapt with the situation as
5:41 pm
they wait for further humanitarian aid to arrive to the gaza strip. >> we heard a short time ago from the u.n. secretary of state antony blinken who is currently on his way, flying to israel as we speak. he spoke about potentially setting up a safe passage for civilians in gaza to get them out. what is the reaction to that there? how many people are desperate just to get out of gaza right now? reporter: the issue of opening a civilian passage for evacuation seems it would not be inside the gaza strip. no governments have consultant
5:42 pm
-- have confirmed in evacuation from within. so antony blinken might want to suggest this but there is no confirmation. [indiscernible] >> thank you so much for updating us. the director general of palestine society is saying medical staff are being deliberately targeted. >> these of the darkest days for the medical teams and specifically for palestine emergency medical volunteers and staff. today we lost four of our colleagues. three of them had direct hits
5:43 pm
while they were attending to some of the injured in the area. the fourth person went to attend a number of people who were injured i needed medical attention. -- injured and needed medical attention. the red cross gave us the green light to go to that area, it was in the east of gaza on the border area. while they were putting the wounded into the vans, our medic was shot straight to the heart. so then we lost the fourth person in less than half an hour. this is a very tragic situation.
5:44 pm
our people are stressed, exhausted, and we have never seen such atrocities, such a deliberate targeting in this manner of medical personnel who are giving humanitarian assistance to the people who need it. >> rocket fire from gaza has hit a hospital in a southern israel eat city. hamas -- israeli city. there are reports to some damage in the city. at least 1200 israelis have been killed since the hamas attack saturday. what is the latest you are hearing about security incidents and areas to the south? i understand the last few hours have been quite chaotic. reporter: that's right.
5:45 pm
the situation that to have calmed down since we last spoke in the south. we are not hearing the sirens in the towns, villages, cities in israel south on the border with gaza. so at the moment, the tension is less that it was but let me walk you through some of the incidents we have heard about in the last few hours in addition to the rocket sirens ringing out. we were told by the army there was an exchange of fire between the hamas and israeli fighters in the south close to the border with gaza. the israeli army says they found a vehicle carrying at least
5:46 pm
three hamas fighters and and israeli tank fired on the vehicle and the threat was thwarted. we have not gotten more details from the army about the situation now but we are chasing more information. earlier in the day, rocket sirens were blaring in another part of the city. a barrage of rockets were fired from the gaza strip. a couple of them hit ashkelon and it was reported at least one hospital was hit, possibly two buildings were hit by the rockets. beyond that, it is fluid and volatile. things can change by the minute. several hours ago we were hearing about continued infiltration by hamas fighters
5:47 pm
in areas 3 km north of the gaza strip but we have not gotten more details as regarding where this stands now. it goes to show how much concern there is of clashes between is really army forces and hamas fighters, attacks by hamas fighters -- between israeli forces and hamas fighters, attacks by hamas fighters. there are still areas where people are sheltering in place, according to the israeli army and media reports. so the situation is volatile. tension can heighten very quickly and things can get out of control very quickly at any time.
5:48 pm
>> given all of that, how are people reacting to just a living with that tension day in and day out? reporter: we see a mix of emotions from people we have spoken with and observed in israel south. many people tell us they cannot begin to comprehend the magnitude of what transpired saturday on the last few days. they say they have not been able to process their feelings. on the other hand, the troop of mobilization continuing in the south, you see it everywhere you go, even where we are now, the intersection behind me now is empty but every few minutes security vehicles passed by.
5:49 pm
reservists on their way to join up with their units. when you are on the highway further south you see cars lined up along the side of the roan. they are reservists who have gone to join their units. they are just leaving their cars on the side of the road. you also have surreal displays. a lot of support is being shown for the troops now in the south from the communities. the last few days we have seen that even in this tension, you have times where citizens will show their support to the army and soldiers and reservists. it is a surreal thing to see. an odd juxtaposition at a time
5:50 pm
where so many people say they expect the ground invasion of gaza will happen at any time and they worry what that means at a time when the government has told them to prepare for hard days ahead. >> thank you. israel's military says it has recaptured some areas near the gaza border. some villages were hit hardest. dozens of bodies have been recovered. reporter: israel's military says it is back in control of this village, one of many near the gaza border where palestinian fighters got in. but soldiers are nervous about more infiltration and gunmen hiding in the surrounding
5:51 pm
fields. the bodies begin to appear. palestinian fighters and then in the destruction of their homes, civilians. body bags being moved to trucks. >> there are bodies and houses. we are slowly clearing the communities. we are finding bodies. dozens. reporter: weapons lie amongst the rubble. a destroyed paraglider on which a fighter flew in. the broken security fence one of dozens of places breached. this is a breach point through which hamas fighters came into israel. there has been a lot of destruction in this village. a lot of bodies. they are not only hamas fighters, but foreign workers. and many israeli civilians.
5:52 pm
the road to a nearby area is littered with destroyed cars and more bodies. the smoldering ruins of a factory destroyed by one of thousands of rockets fired from gaza. and suddenly, the ripping sound of another approaching garage. -- barrage. [explosions] we have been in contact with someone who lived through the nightmare. >> we need to kill them. otherwise it will continue. we cannot go back to giving them food and water and building material. we should not give them these things. reporter: the buildup of military equipment near the
5:53 pm
border continues as israel vows vengeance for the attack on a scale it has never seen before. >> we have broadcast a witt -- there is a video of a release of one woman and two children who had been held captive. they are said to have been released shortly after being captured by hamas saturday. hamas is saying that allegations that they kill women and children is false. they say some western media outlets continue spreading lies about our palestinian people and their resistance which falsely promoted allegations that members of the palestinian resistance beheaded children and assaulted women without evidence to support their claims. hamas strongly condemns the baseless allegations. the israeli army is trying to
5:54 pm
calm fears after a false alarm sent people nationwide scrambling for shelter. [sirens] sirens rang out across the northern israel and flares were fired at the border. people were told to seek shelter over a possible aerial infiltration from lebanon. the army says the panic was caused by human error. our reporter is in the southern lebanon with the border -- near the border with israel. reporter: a very hectic day. it started with hezbollah attacking is really troops on the -- attacking israeli troops on the border. it seems like it was a direct hit with guided missiles. then they started shelling the
5:55 pm
villages surrounding the borders. two people were injured. later this alarm came and there were reports about planes, paraglider's crossing towards the other side of the border. however, there is no reason to understand why this alarm happened because no one saw paraglider's. they did not engage in a battle on the ground. but that is really army -- but the israeli army continued to launch, burning bushes around the border to deny fighters
5:56 pm

29 civilians have been killed in the occupied west bank since the war began saturday. hundreds of palestinian workers from gaza are stranded after being dismissed from their jobs in israel. they were left at the checkpoints near the occupied west bank saturday and are unable to return to their homes. reporter: cut off from their homes, this has become a makeshift home for some palestinians in the gaza strip. this was a government building. now it is a camp for displaced people. >> my brothers and cousins called me and told me my son was injured. a few hours later they called me again and told me he was killed. i want to go see him. his mother is stuck in egypt. i am stuck here. he will be buried and i won't see it. my other two children are
5:58 pm
sheltering in schools. reporter: most people have no home to return to. these people were allowed to work in israel. the israeli government could say it was doing something to help gaza. saturday, employers were told by israeli police to take them to the checkpoint of the west bank. the influx has taken the palestinian authorities by surprise and they are unprepared. >> we need to maintain the health factor. once they are discovered in
