espinoza keeps quiet, especially about the fight that earned him 30 days here. it happened the night he was arrested. he said he doesn't remember a thing about it. >> i chased after a court officer. they hit and kicked one and spit on him. >> he came in severely drunk, drugs, something or other. under the influence of something when he came in. >> espinoza was arrested on larceny and shoplifting and was in court to enter a plea, but the behavior prevented that. instead he was taken to the segregation unit. fortunately for him, he wasn't changed for alleged abusive behavior and later pled not guilt to his original charges he blames his problems on his abuse of prescription drugs.

>> 16 months ago, he was convicted of possession of a firearm and sentenced to two years at the house of correction. a separate jail facility for convicted inmates serving 2 1/2 years or less. due to multiple fights he spent 13 months in segregation. even under those restrictions, he was a significant disciplinary problem >> he has been involved in about 10 fights. a lot of fights he called to happen. a lot more behind the scenes >> i will be in the background and said bleep that. sometimes i like when people yell. i like it. i don't know. it's fun to me. i enjoy that. i like the commotion and stuff.

we got tuna today for lunch. back to our cell after this >> every day in here is a living hell. anticipate no sunshine on this. >> there is some sunshine. boston suffolk county jail. at least on the open air recreation. depending on the security level, inmates are allowed out for an hour or more each day. during that, recreation is taken in housing unit daily where inmates work out any way they can. >> i do pull ups every day.

two sets and i do push ups while i work on the legs. >> over on the women's, some inmates aim for a mind-body connection through a contemplative breakfast. >> reach with your left arm and bring the hand on to the chair. >> the jail allows a volunteer yoga instructor to conduct a class. >> brought like the tree. >> i like it. it's really relaxing and makes your day go by easier. takes away your stress. >> 23-year-old valerie hasn't always been so mellow. she is nearing the end of a 90-day sentence for convicts that include assault on a police officer. >> i got into a fight with this girl. they took me to the police station and they got rough with me so i fought back. i punched a lieutenant in the face. they gave me assault and battery

on a lieutenant police officer. they call me smiley because i'm always smiling. i'm a nice person. but don't get in my personal space. >> she proved her point a few days after arriving in jail. she got into a fight with another female inmate. >> she got a broken eye socket. i put her in the infirmary for eight days. >> the fight earned her a lengthy stay in the female segregation unit. she was released to general population a few weeks ago. despite her sometimes violent tendencies, she claims her numerous days in jail stem from addiction to cocaine and heroin. >> when i was with my kids, i

never did nothing. i was at stay at home mom and it was good. i started doing drugs. it was all downhill. >> she said she turned to prostitution to support her drug habit. two children ages 5 and 6 are in the custody of their father. >> i do write to them. i don't get any mail back and i don't get to talk to them on the phone. he won't let me talk to them on the phone from jail. >> despite the pay, she found room for loftner jail. particularly with her cellmate. >> the first night i came in, we laughed the entire night. rolling. it wasn't that funny. >> i was lapping the wall. i haven't laughed so hard in my lifelike this with me and her. >> archer is also struggling with addictions to heroin and cocaine. she is currently serving one year for prostitution.

him a history to general population. >> here got to a point where he had a cleaned the unit and he came a lot further than they were anticipating. >> they did get a transfer. not the one he wanted. he's back in the box. >> in segregation, i had a disagreement. you can't go here and here and here. he likes to get what he wants. he is manipulative. yesterday morning he had an incident with the juice was leaking and decided he didn't want to insert the juice. when he went into his cell and was not going to work the detail that day, he had a fit and said i'm not getting what i want.

>> the jail normally places the participants in segregation for up to 30 days. >> available for to come up for the altercation on two. >> for especially violent incidences, they may choose to file criminal charges. first staff will review surveillance of the fight >> at that table is four detainees including daniel espinoza. you can see him looking back to see where the officer's position and sight lines are. another interesting part is this gentlemen who knows the attack is coming. he is vacating the area and he will not be a participant. as the gentlemen raises his arms, that's a signal that the 3-1a tack will be ready. he begins to rise from the table and joins in. what ensues is the flurry of punches and kicks to defenseless detainees

>> inmates in suffolk county jail often refer to the disciplinary segregation unit as the box. for a handful of inmates, time in the box does nothing to deter the behavior. in those cases, the jail has one other most drastic option. it can transfer them to another jail in a neighboring county. >> we will accept inmates from other facilities who have issues in their populations and vice-versa. we try to give them a fresh start. we will send the classification where the drama may not be and they see if they can live in population. we don't want a large contingency of people. it creates more disciplinary problems and we try to keep down the violence if we can stem some.
