crisis averted. president obama signed lawmaker's painstaking budget compromise into law yesterday keeping the u.s. out of default for now, however lawmakers left some big business unfinished before breaking for the august recess. tracie potts has the details. >> reporter: lawmakers were so busy dealing with this debt crisis they failed to pass funding for the faa leaving almost 80,000 workers with no pay. after signing a deal to extend america's credit, president obama told congress to deal with the faa. >> congress needs to break that impasse now. >> reporter: nearly 250 airport construction projects are on hold. funding ran out last friday leaving 70,000 construction workers and 4,000 federal employees with no pay. >> i'm concerned with whether or not i'm going to be able to pay my mortgage. this is their bread and butter to have 70,000 of these workers

off is not fair. >> reporter: at issue is whether to cut thousands of dollars the government gives to 13 rural airports. >> all we're trying to do is end these wasteful subsidies, some as high as 3,700 a ticket. >> reporter: the senate's top democrat calls it extreme. >> i do my best to protect the state, sometimes you have to be reasonable, i think. >> reporter: the house passed a bill and left town. >> they passed a bill and said to the united states senate either you take it our way or it will be no runway. >> reporter: during the shutdown the government cannot tax airline tickets. it's losing $200 million a week. don't expect to see those savings if you're booking. some airlines raised prices to compensate, now some have announced they are refunding customers. veronica? >> tracy pie potts in washingto thank you. this afternoon, andrea

metal cage. clashes broke out between mubarak supporters and opponents. a new report has identified a massive hacking attack on government organizations including the united nations and the u.s. energy lab. mcafee said the infiltration took place over several months. it believes one culprit is probably to blame but declined to identify the suspect. one cybersecurity expert says china is the likely candidate. here's your "first look" at some other news going on around america today. one texas driver received quite a scare when he couldn't take his car out of cruise control. with his brakes lock and unable to stock, he barrelled down the road at 60 miles per hour. the ordeal came to an end when a police officer got in front of the out of control vehicle to slow it down. the u.s. coast guard's

discovery of a drug smuggling submarine netted a whale of a narcotics bust. crews unloaded over 200 bails of cocaine in south florida following the arrest of drug traffickers in the caribbean sea. the value of the bust is expected to be $180 million. a severe drought uncovered a major find in a lake in florida. a globe-like figure found in the lake is part of the ill-fated "columbia" space shuttle mission. efforts are being made to return the piece to nasa. in chicago, a symbol of hollywood royalty and america's past time is scheduled to hit the auction block. a baseball kissed by marilyn monroe and signed by yankees legends by joe dim mag dimaggio

up for auction tomorrow. and now for a look at the national weather, we turn to bill karins. you could barely make out the lips on the ball. >> i think they'll have to somehow preserve it. >> it's too late now 1952 is when it happened. >> if it lasted this long, it will last longer. good morning. around the country the heat is the story. around the southeast, people are wondering what will happen with emily. winds are maxing at 50 miles per hour. it's still a weak tropical storm. kind of disorganized. the bright red is the cloud showing you the cold cloud tops where the thunderstorms are. the center of the storm is on the edge of that. not right under the middle of it. that's keeping the storm on the weak side. puerto rico is getting brushed with heavy rain and thunderstorms. and this is heading for the dominican republic later on tonight. the dominican republic has some tall mountains, and they typically tear the storm apart.

the national hurricane center is thinking it has a chance to regenerate. if it does, this would be the general path it would take. the closest it would get to south florida, sometime around saturday at midnight or so until 2:00 a.m. that's the closest it should be to miami. then the hurricane center thinks it makes a more northwards turn and parallel the florida coast. that cone of uncertainty includes florida, but most of it is off the coast. on sunday, it will head up towards the carolinas. they think at this time it could strengthen over the warm waters of the gulf stream and have a category 1 hurricane along the south carolina or north carolina coast. we have a lot of interest here with emily. the big key is what will the state of emily be tomorrow morning after it comes off of haiti and the dominican republic? as far as commuter models go, a lot of them are taking it close to florida and parallel to the coastline going from sunday into monday. let's talk about the heat. this was so oppressive

the activist who hit rupert murdoch with a pie made of shaving foam, received a six-week jail sentence. he had pleaded want guilty to assaulting murdock who is testifying about the hacking scandal for the paper "news of the world." the late senator ted kennedy faced threats long after the murders of his brothers. the many warnings included an alleged assassination plot out of cuba and one reportedly called in by the son of the late mobster al capone. during the 2001 anthrax scare, his office received an envelope of white powder which tested negative for anthrax. in uganda scientists have found a 20 million-year-old fossilized remains of a tree-climbing ape. it could shed light on the region's evolutionary history. in a stunt filmed for a european tv show the mayor of lithuania's capital allegedly fed up with illegally parked vehicles crushed a mercedes with an armored vehicle. the mayor has long advocated his citizens, take up cycling as

alternative transportation. and a male peacock has become the latest escapee from a new york city zoo. since the animal went awol he has been spotted perched on a 5th avenue apartment window ledge and spawned two twitter accounts. now here's a "first look" at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,866 after dropping 265 points. the s&p sinks 32 points, and the nasdaq lost 75. taking a look at overseas trading this morning in tokyo, the nikkei slipped 207 points, while in hong kong the hang seng tumbled 428. weak economic data and poor earnings negated whatever debt deal there was on wall street tuesday and sparked fresh concerns about the economy's health. consumers cut spending in june for the first time in nearly two years. incomes rose by the smallest

amount since last september. coming a day after weak manufacturing data and after last friday's chilling government figures showing the economy growing at the slowest pace since the recession, the street's mood has suddenly become grim. all 30 dow stocks fell. all but 13 of 500 on the s&p fell. wall street is in its longest losing streak since october 2008. the ten-year treasury yield fell to its lowest since 2011 as investors sought safe haven there. gold, another traditional safe spot, was up almost 1 1/2%. general electric and home depot led stocks lower with losses of 4% or more. pfizer's second quarter profit beat expectations and its forecast was bright. nevertheless, shares fell over 4.5%. arch daniels midland dropped 6 . 56 missing profit expectations. coach lost nearly 7% after reporting a loss in profits. also adding to the bleakness, july's u.s. auto sales rose only slightly threatening to derail the industry's fragile recovery.

computer than their dog. i can see why. when i ask my computer who played the bad guy in "die hard" it said allen rickman. when i asked dog, he said which die hard? there's been like four of them. charlie sheen checked his ex-wife brooke mueller out of rehab. which begs the question, which kind of rehab facility lets charlie sheen check anybody out. "late night with jimmy fallon" week nights at 12:30, 111:35. in case you have any doubt remaining that charlie sheen will never return to "two and a half men," this should put an end to it. various reports say in the season's opener starring sheen's replacement, ashton kutcher, the character sheen played on the show is not only dead, but the episode will revolve around the funeral being held for him.
