furious as they've been at any point many the last 16 years. >> and the president's under pressure to do something big. >> if i were the president i'd call the congress back in and said you're not having a summer vacation. get back here. >> if he calls back konks that places the onus on congress to actually do something. >> the last thing this guy needs is more tactics and cleverness. what he needs is a heart and real action to put people back to work. >> while back on wall street it's anyone's guess how thins will turn out today. >> this market's got something for everyone. not in a good way. >> let's look at the numbering right now. the dow jones industrials off in a big way down 364 points. the s&p has slipped almost 36 points. we're looking at the nasdaq, plummeting here another 68 1/3 covering wall street and the white house right now mandy drury is at cnbc world headquarters and kristen welker at the white house. mandy, what specifically is moving the market as we speak.
9:01 am
>> you can see the nervousness here. i was taking a look at gold. we're $10 from cracking $1800 from one ounce. money is pouring into investments considered safe including the ten-year treasury. two main reasons, even though the fed's plenged to keep interest rates at nearly zero with somewhat of a backstop to the market it's because the economy is weaker than expected. second, europe. what kind of country is debt laden countries and the banking sector in whether it's serious or manageable. that's weighing on u.s. financial stocks as well. to the ewe row problem france we have a double whammy there. speculation they could lees the aaa rating. and rumors about possible trouble at another company plummeted an unprecedented 21% before it denied all market rumors. there's fear we could see a bank failure in europe. >> we're watching the markets right now. i know that the president of france is meeting with his
9:02 am
government ministers cut short a vacation to try a get a handle on what they can do about the situation with italy and spain. in the meantime back here in the united states, kristen, what's our president doing to try to staunch the flow of blood? >> reporter: the white house says the president is focused on this problem 24/7. but as you know, a lot of democrats right now want to see more action. there's been some rumbles around here that he could actually call congress back. not clear if that's going to happen. i reached out to some folk tons hill who say they haven't heard from the president yet. at least at this point in time doesn't seem like that's imminent. what we will see is the president traveling a little bit later on this week and next week. next week he'll be taking a tour throughout the midwest talking about jobs and the economy. then we expect him to present his ideas for deficit reductions to that bipartisan, bicameral supercommittee that will con
9:03 am
queen in september to try to identify more deficit reductions. >> we have these choices now to sit on the supercommittee to try to move this thing forward. there was a lot of criticism about what the democrats are on this. what about the republican side here, kristen? >> well, contessa it's interesting. one of the things that president obama has been calling for is a balanced approach, entitlement reform, tax reform. it will be interesting to see if this committee can get that. we're seeing those republicans that you just put up on the senate side, senator john kyle, senate too maniy, senator portman and then on the house side, when sarling, camp and upton. camp says on the ways and means committee. so he's been dealing with tax reform for quite a while. a lot of people wondering is this an admission by republicans that they know that tax reform will in fact need to be on the table here. having said that, all six of these picks signed that pledge by grover norquist not to
9:04 am
increase taxes. so we'll to have see how that plays out. again, the president expected to put his own proposal forward here, contessa. as you say democrats feel he's not doing enough. they are focused on the proposal. we haven't heard from the white house when the proposal will be releesd or exactly what it's going to look like. >> thank you for keeping an eye on that. mandy drury thanks for keeping an eye on the markets. of course, the economic crisis is turning into a crisis of leadership for the country. and the president as you heard kristen say is really taking the hits from the left, from the right, from the middle. over how to get things moving. john thon alter is an msnbc political analyst. he's taking hits from all sides. would it be better for him now to switch modes to stop being so measured, he is thoughtful, he is logical. he makes compromises. do the american people want to see him don on the boxing gloves
9:05 am
and coming out fighting? >> you know, i think some liberals are saying that they want to see him do that. i'm not sure the american people as a whole want to see him go pugilistic on the country. they want to see him do something. it's easy for us to say do something, mr. president. but he needs to. he needs to be creative. he needs to show leadership. >> in the crisis after 9/11 we saw the president do that. we saw george bush come out in righteous anger in mighty wrath he gathered and unified the national as a whole. we're in a crisis now, where is that greater unifier? >> are we in a crisis we're having an august swoon in the stock market. it's a long overdue correction. the idea that somehow everybody's going to lose, a big chunk of their portfolio the way they did on paper and those who panicked lost it in 2008, bedon't quite know and the
9:06 am
indications are that as bad as things are rugts now, this ain't 2008. but what it is is the awful august of 2011 and the month's not even half over. because it's going to be september before the new economic indicators this be month is going to be dreadful. the idea of the president taking a vacation, i know he and his people feel he needs a vacation, the idea of him going to,artha's vineyard this month is a bad one. i think pretty soon they'll recognize it. >> speaking of bad and dreadful and the other ajektives, the gallup drally tracking poll puts approval of the president at 42%. there's a slew of op-eds saying this is a test of president obama's one-term presidency. you have maw rein dowd calling him with withholder and chief. and the washington examer saying the romance is gone. how does he turn that around?
9:07 am
>> well, you know, i think a lot of people inside the white house are trying to figure that out right now. the main requirement is to recognize that he needs to make some kind of a mid course correction. and the thing about barack obama is he doesn't like to get, you know, all goosed up by the cable networks as he's said in the past. he tries to take a longer view and not go by this day-to-day fever meter. so right now he's kind of saying take a deep breath. he's focused now now on the fact that we lost all those great soldiers over the weekend in afghanistan and he's dealing with their families now. and he's out to dover yesterday. he's got other thins on his mind than whether pundits are happy with him right now. i don't think he's happy with liberals who are making most of the noise right now.
9:08 am
he needs to get independents. in order to get independents, i'm not disagreeing with your premise, he needs to show stronger leadership. so what the white house must be focused on now in the next few weeks is where they want to do it at labor day or sooner they need to give a speech to the american public that works, that is not like that loser that he delivered on monday that just not only did it fall flat, but the market tumbled even more afterward. >> thank you. let me bring in rans prix bus who chairs the republican national committee. he got a lot of criticism for that speech. there's a lot of criticism to go around here a lot of it is for the republicans in congress. do they need to think about some of the same things, what works, what doesn't work, what do the american people, what do their constituents really want from them? >> i think, contessa, what you're seeing is that i think americans are frustrated with a lot of people in washington.
9:09 am
so i would agree with that. if you look at the recent past with what the republicans are doing, they're making the tough choices. they're presenting the paul ryan plan for a budget. they're presenting cut, cap and balance. they're presenting another, the ultimate plan with a joint effort between john boehner and mitch mcconnell and harry reid. i think that what americans are starving for and i think johnthan is correct, they're starving for real authentic leadership in this country. not necessarily republican or democrat, but real leaders to make tough decisions to put america back on track, they're seeing a president that isn't leading. i think mr. alter was exactly right when he said that the president needs to do something. you can't just sit here stuck in the mud not making any decision, having meetingings giving press conferences, speeches. the president needs to do
9:10 am
something. what the american people are seeing is a president who is not engaged. when he is engaged can't seem to get anything done. they're not seeing a leader. while your numbers i haven't seen them, i presume they're all correct, the problem is that the fish rots at the head. the leader of our country is become bam he's not fulfilling his promises. he's not engaged. >> i'm sure the president and his people would push back against saying he's not engaged, of course he was involved in the negotiations for a deal raising the debt ceiling that he's been very intent on meeting with congressional leaders and trying to push through legislation that helps improve the economy and in the meantime, youb very public in your criticism now in terms of the people that have been chosen to sit on this supercommittee over the debt. you've been very public in your criticism of the treasury secretary who served under the new york fed under bush and then of course, now as treasury
9:11 am
secretary with obama in the white house. what is it that you see that needs to be changed? >> well, i mean, contessaer you're right, in meetings and calling meetings and having meetings that's one thing. but actually putting something on paper, a plan for the american people to see, the president hasn't done. the democrats haven't passed a budget. now we have an economy that's even further many the tank than we started. the president's now begging tim geithner who helped put these policies in place to stay there. he should go. i think the american people have lost all confidence in him. he predicted that we would never be downgraded by the s&p in april. low and behold we are downgraded. then we've got senator murray who was appointed to this debt commission, the supercommittee what they're calling it, and she's the head of the senator yol committee for the democrats. >> do you think she doesn't have the interest of the nation in her as her first priority? >> i think she has -- i'm not questioning the interest that she has as her priority.
9:12 am
i'm sure she's interested in representing the people of washington. i'm not questioning that. i think when a senator takes on the responsibility to spearhead the fundraising arm of the senator yal committee -- but they raise money from pacs. they raise money from people who want to get their legislation through. >> if we look at people that are fundraisers we're in trouble. going into an election year every member of congress, maybe not the senators who are not up for releather -- >> you're point is made. heading up the entire committee is a different ball game. >> i've got to ask you about wisconsin here. being that you're from wisconsin. the senate republicans survived. they maintained control of the senate in wisconsin. and yet it was not -- you didn't get away scot-free.
9:13 am
how is this likely to play out not only for wisconsin, but for the nation. can you extrapolate here forecast for the future. >> sure. i view it as a 100% absolute victory for not osama bin laden people in wisconsin but for all americans that want to make sure that their government is listening and they can start living within its means. after $30 million of big government union money coming in and the manufactured outrage that they've tried to put together in wisconsin, we remain red. we won the race in wisconsin. we won again yesterday. we may win one or two next week. i think for the country it's the start of having the debate and winning the debate that we need to have a country of makers and not a country of takers. i think that's important in saving not only wi by but a lot of other states that are watching. it's a good signal, a good sign and a good tell for the rest of america as to where the lek rat is moving and they're moving to
9:14 am
winning a battle of individual freedom for america. >> it's good to have you on. i typically don't use the word extrapolate in normal conversations. with you somehow, the vocabulary words come out. thank you so much. >> i hope that's a good influence. >> absolutely. thank you. let's take a look right now at the markets. talk about something that makes you want to groan. this is ma pathetic. the dow jones is dropping below the 11,000 mark. s&p off by 34. the nasdaq down 65 points. we'll continue watching it throughout the day. this has been a ping-pong of a day. roller coaster ups and downs. we're also watching breaking news right now coming out of florida where it looks like two of the three of those siblings on the run, remember the three that i was telling you about earlier this week, at least two

9:18 am
she had reportedly received a text from them saying that something to the effect of everybody has a time to die. >> reporter: you'll recall these siblings had said and told family and friends that they were not going to be taken to custody alive from a law enforcement perspective they may see this as a good ending to a manhunt. no shots were fired and that's what law enforcement were so concerned about. they were so worried that the so-called doherty gang was going to go out in a blaze of gunfire. >> thank you for saying on top of thattory for us. we're going to take a quick break. break. we'll be right back. there's another way to minimize litter box odor: purina tidy cats. tidy cats premium line of litters now works harder
