breakthrough in libya. a sudden turn of events for rebels. six months into the country's exhausting civil war. case dismissed. news that the sexual assault charges against former imf chief may be dropped. and kansas city crash. spectators watch in horror as an air show comes to a tragic and fiery end. good morning, everyone. i'm lynn berry. more straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc.
2:01 am
we begin this morning with a fight for freedom. amp months of stops and starts, jubilant rebel fighters made a surprisingly swift advance into tripoli sunday that appeared to be beginning of the end for moammar gadhafi's rule after two of his sons were taken into custody. this morning, heavy clashes, gunfire and explosions have been reported near gadhafi's compound as government forces launched a counterattack. meanwhile, president obama is on vacation with his family on martha's vineyard where he's been kept up to date on the situation in libya as it unfolds. nbc's brian mooar joins us from washington with the very layest on all of this. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. the fate of the gadhafi regime has been all but inevitable.
2:02 am
the question is what comes next? outside the white house and in parcel bration, generations of libyans express joy as moammar gadhafi's regime crumbled half a world away. >> it's a good feeling. the taste of freedom. >> gadhafi is the worst man on this earth. >> he lies. he kills our people and now it's time for him to step down. >> reporter: on vacation in martha's vineyard, president obama was getting regular updates throughout the weekend. >> wait until we have more information. i'll make a statement. >> reporter: in that statement the president said the momentum against the gadhafi regime has reached a tipping point. tripoli is slipping from the grasp of a tyrant. the six-month civil war tookal startling return with rebel troops pushing into the capital of tripoli. this morning they were reported at the doorstep of gadhafi's compound. a government spokesman begged for a break to negotiate a peace.
2:03 am
>> each side actually is terrified of the other side. so let's suspend all military operations, all violence right now. >> reporter: for libya, a turning point. but the fighting isn't over. and president obama is calling on the libyan people to turn a season's conflict into a season of peace. lynn? >> the big question today, where exactly is moammar gadhafi? brian mooar for us in washington. brian, thank you. well, last night as news broke of the rebels advance into tripoli, msnbc's chris jansing asked nbc news military analyst colonel jack jacobs if he's concerned about the stockpiles of gadhafis munitions that have been raided, including anti-aircraft missiles. >> i think it's going to be almost impossible to keep absolutely everything that was in the arsenals of gadhafi under control.
2:04 am
you get a country like pakistan, for example which has a hard time accounting for all of its materiel, a place like libya is not going to be under control of conventional but deadly arms like sa-7 shoulder-fired surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles. i think it's going to be very difficult to control all that stuff. if you perceive that there is a number of arsenals out in and they get raided by the rebels, the law of large levels says most can be controlled by the rebels but some will get through controled by other people and some of those people are going to be bad guys. i'm very worried about that equipment. >> add gadhafi's regime crumbles, syria's president, assad, said his country will not meet the same fate, bespite a month's long uprising there. assad continued to resist mounting international pressure to step down and warned against any military intervention in that country. in a television interview
2:05 am
yesterday, assad repeated an earlier promise of reforms, saying he expects a parliamentary election would be held next february. assad said he was "not worried about a security threat in his country." this as an estimated 2,000 protesters have been killed in the month's long crackdown by assad's regime. just got word irene has been upgraded to a hurricane as it pounds puerto rico. power has been knocked out across parts of puerto rico after blowing through the u.s. virgin islands earlier. it is going to hit the dominican republic, then head to the bahamas followed by the southeastern u.s. meteorologist bill karins has been tracking this storm and will have an update coming up in a few minutes. but first, here's your first look at some of the other news going on around america today -- a shocking end to one pilot's flight at a missouri air show. the pilot spiraled downward

2:08 am
