of the many east coast towns struggling to recover. governor chris christie will join the president. >> reporter: when president obama arches in a short while, he'll get first-hand look at the damage caused by hurricane irene. he'll be joined by chris christie and craig fugate and state and local officials. you can see the passaic river behind me, receding a bit. but this community is still hurting, still trying to rebuild. when irene first hit, as many as 1,500 people have had to be evacuated from their homes. hundreds of thousands of people lost power, homes destroyed, cities destroyed. some city blocks were completely submerged. this is a working class community that was really hurting economically before irene hit, so the folks here are really struggling now.
8:02 am
president obama has declared new jersey a state of disaster. one of several states that have gotten that categorization, meaning they can get federal assistance. the people in patterson tell me when the president comes they want to hear him talk specifically about how they will get help from him from the federal government. one interesting note, a record year in terms of natural disasters. ten weather-related incidents have caused $1 billion in damage alone this year. each of them causing $1 billion alone in damage. federal officials assessing the damage from hurricane irene right now. it strands at $7 billion they believe. back to you. slow-moving tropical storm lee has triggered tornado watches for parts of the gulf coast this morning. the center came ashore in louisiana. lee has forced some to evacuate and others are dealing with

power outages. live once again to new orleans. and charles hadlock. how is the city handling the situation there? >> caller: well, it's on alert. of course, always on alert whenever have you a tropical storm or tropical disturbance in the gulf of mexico. this storm is barely crawling on shore. about 100 miles west of new orleans, between morgan city and new iberia. expected to move between new orleans and baton rouge sometime late today, and then off to the northeast sometime on monday and tuesday. now, tropical storm lee is barely a tropical storm at best, but, remember, back when hurricane katrina hit here six years ago, that eroded away a lot of the coastline. so any type of named storm is a big threat here. tourists in the french quarter dodged rainstorms to take in the sights. near the bayous, away from the

levees that protect the city -- >> we need levee protection! >> reporter: residents like this man say hurricane lee is no party. >> you see people's homes flooded, it's amazing. >> reporter: a dozen homes flooded in lefette and thousands more are threatened. >> the evacuation route is pretty much underwater. my wife has a small car, we can't get out. >> reporter: forecasters fear lee could dump 20 inches of rain along the coast. this is one of the dozens of pump stations at the ready. new orleans is 5 to 10 feet below sea level. any amount of rain that falls here has to be pumped out. the fear, this storm could bring more rain than the pumps can handle. for now, the pumps are working, and the levees, rebuilt since katrina, are holding. >> we have a break in the rain right now, mayor. how is the city dooing? the city is keeping a watchful
8:05 am
eye on the slow-moving storm. >> this one is sitting there and won't make up its mind about what it wants to do any time have you a storm like that, you have to be very, very careful. >> reporter: back in the bayou, where they are used to this kind of flooding, curtis is taking the storm in stride. >> just cleaning everything off, waiting for it to come back and we'll go around and picking up the worms as the water goes down and go fishing again. >> reporter: no one is bringing out their fishing rods just yet. the storm is still a danger of causing flooding in new orleans. so everyone along the gulf coast remains on guard. back to you, alex. >> picking up the worms to go fishing. i just went blech. at least he has a sense of had you more abohumor about it. what is the latest on lee? >> alex, good morning. that is glass half full. picking up the worms after lee. 45 miles per hour, latest

advisory. center of lee is onshore and the problem, we have this persistent flow of moisture coming in through the gulf of mexico. it's barely moving. maybe two or three miles per hour and that's about it. we're seeing a lot of heavy rain out here as well. we continue to track lee, and with the rain, embedded is the risk for thunderstorms. another threat with land falling systems, and a very fast mover. you don't have a lot of lead time. they spin up quickly. that's a big concern. another thing we'll watch, a front tracking in across the east and that combined with lee will lead to a lot of heavy rains here in the south. southern appalachians, central appalachians and it could track into the mid-atlantic and northeast as well into places like paterson, new jersey, which as you know can't handle more rainfall. we'll track the front. front will come through on tuesday in the northeast. we bring in the remnants of lee, moisture by wednesday and thursday and that could potentially get into the northeast. and speaking of the east coast, let's look at katia, and all
8:07 am
eyes are wondering what is happening with katia, latest advisory, winds are up, and an update. 100 miles an hour. we see a big pressure diop to 968 and sustained winds of 89. katia has increased to a category 2. the track has not changed very much. it goes to the northwest and eventually make as a turn. the question, does it turn before it gets close to the u.s. east coast. everyone from the middle to the end of next week needs to watch this, at the very least high surf could be a problem. it could be more than that. back to you. >> jen carfagno, thank you for that. the nbc affiliate in detroit following massive power outages. as many as 100,000 customers in the dark right now. half of those affected had expected to have power restored sometime by tonight. that storm injured several

8:09 am
he arrived back at his flat in paris. a scrum of journalists waiting for him, indicating how big a figure is dsk is in france. he and his wife looked relaxed and cheerful once they made it through the reporters. i do expect him to give a television interview, putting for the his version of what happened to him since may. don't really expect a statement from him today. of course, what those journalists and everyone else really wants to know is whether he will now attempt to return to front-line politics. remember, when he was arrested in may, he was the favorite to be selected to represent the socialist party in next year's presidential elebzctions and wa believed to vai real chance to defeat nicolas sarkozy. in the past few weeks, france has learned a lot about his character and sexual behavior, and many have been frankly shocked. there are other voices that say this will blow over and he's too

valuable and experienced an individual to be left out. france, like the rest of europe, is facing big problems and dsk has a wealth of experience dealing with debt problems from his time at imf and is a highly regarded economist. alex. >> you mentioned the troubles potential that will people have gotten to know a lot about his past in france. even though he's not facing charges in the u.s., criminal charges, civil ones are there. any potential for scandal in france? anything else he faces there? >> well, there is, yes. he's facing charges in a different sex case in france. a young writer, cast tristiane banault who accused him of rape back in 2003. prosecutors will decide shortly whether or not to proceed. mr. strauss-khan has threatened to sue her for defamation and faces the civil suit that you referred to in the states, by

ms. diallo, the chamber maid who made the allegations in the united states. and could be other allegations that could start to trickle out now that he's back. most polls suggest that the majority of french people don't really want to see him in front-line politics yet, and, of course, there is always the possibility that he might endorse one of the other candidates seeking to be selected as the socialist candidate for the elections next year. at the moment, it seems they seem to be hesitating. no one seems to be rushing forward to embrace any such endorsement. there is concern that it might actually backfire. alex. >> annabelle roberts in london, many thanks. with only a week to go before the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, no worries about possible attacks. no worries about the potential of attacks by small airplanes. no specific or credible evidence about an attack. joining me from boca raton, florida, nbc analyst evan
8:12 am
coleman. what should we read into this, if anything? or is this generally being aware given this anniversary? >> look, it's been an ongoing threat. not a big piece of news that airplanes are a method which of course is seeking to use to attack the united states. but reasonably we've seen more and more evidence that small airplanes, including private airplanes, can be a useful tool for terrorists from al qaeda and others as well. i think you remember back just a few years ago, we had an individual in texas who flew an airplane into an irs officer there, killed an irs agent and burned the building to a ground. he wasn't an organized terrorist. he was just one lone violent extre extremist. there isn't any specific intelligence in this case, but al qaeda is still interested in using airplanes, it is looking at the idea of using alternative methods like private airports and so you have to be aware that al qaeda is looking for revenge and this is the 9/11 anniversary.
8:13 am
a good idea to keep our eyes open. >> eyes open big time. aren't there thousands of small airplanes across the country to keep an eye on? >> yeah, and that's the big problem here. the federal government recognizes it cannot possibly monitor all of these situations on its own. it needs the eyes and ears of individual private plane owners, people who work at airports to keep an eye out, see if they see anything unusual. that's how we'll get a final warning. impossible for the fbi to track every single small plane across the u.s. and impossible to track every single threat. we've definitely narrowed down the possibilities when it comes to commercial aviation. in other words, passenger airplanes. private aircraft is much more difficult. >> we only have i guess a week from today until the anniversary. does that make things more difficult? no specific criminal threat at this point. you try to lock down things, check and check twice. do we need to be more heightened
8:14 am
alert this week? or just a sustained alert in the nature of the way things have been? >> as far as federal law enforcement is concerns, they are on high alert right now. the 9/11 anniversary is weighing heavily in everyone's minds. hopefully it will pass and nothing will happen. the fbi can only be in so many places at once. and without the eyes and ears of individual private citizens watching carefully and are watching to see whether or not they see things that are odd. we just had an incident down in texas near ft. hood, where a second potential ft. hood massacre was averted because of the smart thinking of people who worked at a gun shop. it wasn't the fbi, it wasn't military investigators, it was private citizens. it's important to recognize that and understand that each of us has a role in making sure that the anniversary passes without anything, you know, unfortunate happening. >> a very good heads up from you. evan coleman, many thanks.

jobs creation, the new supercommittee on debt reduction meets for the first time. committee, made up of six republicans and six democrats are charged with cutting $1.5 trillion by thanksgiving. good sunday morning. >> good morning, alex. great to be with you. >> i'm glad you are here. it's a long way between zero cuts and $1.5 trillion. >> right. >> are there areas where both parties can agree, we can put there? >> there are some cuts that were already outlined. there is some common ground. but will they be able to reach $1.5 trillion. one thing worth pointing out, it's not all or nothing for them if they are not able to get to the $1.5 trillion, they can come to a smaller number.
8:21 am
that might end up being the only thing feasible for them. whether or not they will be able to expand the cuts. >> do you think we're in for another prolonged fight. this will get pushed up to thanksgiving. the tenor of these 12 doing it, and what they are charged with doing it, will they effectively being able to work together? >> everybody is striking an optimistic tone. they will come together thursday to meet. we'll be able to tell a lot of whether they are able to strike the right note. it's worth pointing out, even if they are not able to come up with some kind of agreement before thanksgiving, the alternative is that these across the board cuts will be enacted. a long way between now and then. this fight could in theory be dragged out until after the election. >> as we look at the august jobs report from last month, the government cut 17,000 jobs in august. are these federal spending cuts going to exacerbate the

unemployment crisis we're in? >> that's the argument house republicans can make. they have been arguing for the whole debt ceiling debate, the thing that will get the economy jump started again is reducing the federal deficit. they will make the argument and the next round of discussions, the ball is in their court to continue making that argument. >> many thanks. >> thanks alex. this week at the movies, sharks in 3-d, but are they taking a bite at the box office? i had a heart problem.

8:36 am
ready to have a specific package. his best pope, if republicans don't want to pass what he's proposing, go out on the road with specifics and repeatedly engage the american public on specifics. so far he hasn't done that, he has lost credibility with voters who don't know if he has a plan. if voters help him pass something, he needs to really sell this over and over and over again. >> do you think the president has waited too long? why has he waited so long to deliver this speech on jobs? >> i think he's waited too long. i think he announced it -- he and his team announced it too late. they weren't ready to announce it, didn't care to. he heightened expectations, making them impossible to meet and had a skirmish over when to give the speech before congress. it was a fight the president started. one he wasn't going to win. he didn't need to start it.
8:37 am
it became a petty, partisan, embarrassing skirmish and he had to back down and it will give it the knife after the night after republican debate so it looks like a rebuttal. followup will be more critical. >> don't you think the political skirmish was embarrassing to republican s too. >> absolutely. but they are ready to play these games. they are ready to play those games. he asked for it. he started it. it was a fight he didn't need to pick. independent voters, the only people he cares about, to push him over the line in 2012 and push him over the line again, they don't like those kinds of reindeer games. >> a.b. stoddard, thank you so much. >> thanks alex. watch the president's speech, thursday at 7:00 eastern, right here on msnbc. governor rick perry heading

he has been at the helm for 45 years, but earlier this year, announced this weekend would be his finale and suddenly the chair announced that lewis would not be appearing. john of "the las vegas sun" joins us with the strange circumstances of this year's telethon. what's going on? what do you know? >> we're calling this the nutty telethon at this point. what we can tell you, jerry lewis, at the forefront of this telethon for five decades, is out of the picture today, and he's been out of the picture for the last several days. kind of officially. sort of a plan in place to bring him back on the show. this is the -- the culmination of a very shakespearean tragedy. surrounded the mda since the end of last year's show. >> do we know, john, if this is health-related?
8:47 am
we've seen him, grown up with him. he's been there since forever, and you could tell, and we knew from news reports, that his health maybe not as vibrant as it had once been. is this health related do you believe? >> no, i saw jerry two weeks ago saturday. receiving an award here from the nevada broadcaster's association. a lifetime achievement award in fine spirits. nothing that anybody has seen that indicates he wouldn't be able to come out and sing a song and make an appearance for ten minutes on a national broadcast. it's not that. nothing that i've seen indicates that at all. >> is he going to get his side of the story out? >> i think that he will eventually. you know, lewis has kind of vacillated on when he will actually talk about this. at one point he mentioned he would have a news conference right after the telethon. i talked to one of his -- his publicist yesterday. that's not been set. i think that he's going to let
8:48 am
the air out of the balloon a little bit and come out and talk about this at length on his own schedule. there's been a lot of kinetic energy around this telethon. and he needs to get his feet under him before he goes public with his side of the story. >> somewhat inconceivable that the mda telethon will happen without jerry lewis. when you talk to people, are they scratching their heads like really? no jerry lewis? >> this seems like the least favorable outcome for everybody involved, to not allow jerry lewis to have some presence on this telethon. it would be great for tv, great for the organization, great for everybody involved to have that moment. and i think that -- and there was movement to have jerry on the show, even this week. i think they were going to record him singing you'll never walk alone with a 33-piece orchestra at the hotel on thursday. on wednesday morning, that session was canceled.
8:49 am
that gives you an idea of how fluid this all is. i think that it's an indication of the conflict between the mda officials and jerry lewis, that this was never able to come to a -- an agreeable conclusion. >> yeah. most unfortunate. john, go ahead and get to the bottom of that story and get back on the air. all curious, about what in the world is going on there. >> talk to me in a few days. we'll know. >> will do. a new arrival at the central park zoo had her debut on the "today" show. irene hope was born to her mom hours before the infamous hurricane arrived. >> on sunday morning, we actually needed to get into the children's zoo, we needed to get down by ladders because the flooding was so bad by the main entrance. as soon as the sun came out and it was safe to be out, we checked on her first. and we were happy to see truffle was a good mom and nursed her

8:54 am
and throughout we wanted to tell personal stories for people who had been involved in this terrible day in american history. >> it tells the story not only of those who died but of those who survived. horrific attack. for example, as we look at some of these things, you have the video camera. i believe we'll be seeing that shortly. that caught the vision. >> the only known video of that first strike on the building. >> yeah. there it is right there. pretty incredible. other items, a fire truck door. talk about that some one, was that buried under rubble? >> it was covered with rubble and almost thought more than anything else it symbolized the resilience of the people and, particularly, first responders and heroic deeds they did that day. >> there is a squishy handle. what was that used for?
8:55 am
>> imagine you're in a building and the elevator stopped and you were stuck. that was the case with dan and other people with him. they could prior open the doors but had to scratch through the wall board to get out. they used that squishy handle to do that. >> there is a clock frozen at the exact time of the attack and there's military cones and then there is a phone. what is significant about the phone that we're going to see? >> that was ted olson. he was the solicitor general of the united states. his wife was on the flight that went into the pentagon. she knew her flight had been hijacked and she was able to make phone contact with her husband. it was on that phone that he spoke to her and had his last conversations with her. it was a very poignant reminder of that last link to people that you knew who lost their life that day. >> was there another phone in the display belonging to former may mayor rudy guiliani?
8:56 am
>> that cell phone is some one of the things that we thought would bring his mechl ree back to life. >> there it is. ten years now. there's a lot of sensitivity as to whether or not the images from that day should be shown, whether it's the smoke going out of the twin towers, the actual crashing of those plains into the towers, the pentagon, the crash site in pennsylvania. for those people that are sensitive to that, how does what we have on display at the smithsonian differ? >> well, i think it focuses on the individual lives of all of us as americans. some of the most interesting things at being at the display is see you hog parents are talking to the children and communicate to those who were too young to remember anything or too vaguely the events of the
