balcony collapse during a religious celebration in india. good morning. i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc. we begin this morning with an emotional milestone. it has now been a decade since our lives were forever changed by the tragic and heart-wrenching events of 9/11. yesterday was a day for americans to remember the many lives taken from us, people who will never be forgotten. here's lester holt. >> reporter: for the first time since the attack, the september 11th sun rose over new york city

with a permanent memorial mirroring the tears that flowed on this anniversary. >> my dad, michael babbit. >> reporter: first lady lawyer bush went as wives, husbands, parents and children, some too young to remember their moms or dads told us who they lost. >> and my father, who i never met because i was in my mom's belly. >> reporter: others told us what they lost. >> i wish my dad had been there to teach me how to drive. ask a girl out on a date, and see me graduate from high school. >> reporter: the president and mrs. obama began their visit to all three attack sites greeting the family of victims in new york. >> god is our refuge and strength. >> reporter: later the president read a biblical passage. former president bush quoted another war-time president, abraham lincoln n offering his

michael. for me, this is the place i want to honor him. >> reporter: john a.catamatties. >> i'm sad by the fact he's among one of the deceased obviously. at the same time, i'm so grateful that his name will be forever preserved, you know, in bronze. >> reporter: as they have every year, bells tolled at the moment of impact. 9:37 was the moment american flight 77 struck the pentagon killing 184 people. ♪ amazing grace >> good morning. >> reporter: vice president biden paid tribute to the pentagon victims but also to those who answered the call to arms after 9/11. >> many of them were just kids on that bright september morning, but like their grandparents on december 7,

1941, they courageously bore the burden that history placed on their shoulders. >> reporter: the bells tolled again at 10:03, at the moment united flight 93 crashed in pennsylvania's countryside. >> my lovely mother. >> my beautiful sister. >> reporter: there were 40 names to read in shanksville. 40 names now etched into a wall. ♪ >> when we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. >> reporter: the president laid a wreath here before ending his day back in washington where he laid another wreath at the pentagon. and spent time with family members. back in new york, the 1 world trade center tower quickly rises above the ground, a symbol of recovery. time has healed this landscape

but it does not heal all the wounds of 9/11. >> that was nbc's lester holt reporting. the tributes to the victims of 9/11 continued through the night. two beams of light radiated from the place where the twin towers once stood. tribute in light is the installation art project serving as a memorial to those lost and also a symbol of the spirit of new york city. the lights will stay on until dawn today. last night the president addressed some 2,000 attendees at the concert of hope. >> these past ten years have shown that america does not give in to fear.

the firefighters who rescued to the scene, the passengers who stormed the cockpit, these patriots define the very nature of courage. >> performances by alan jackson, patti labelle and the marine chamber orchestra celebrated what one woman called our country's strength, resilience and diversity. after yesterday's busy day marking 9/11, white house officials say today president obama will begin a push to build support for his new $447 billion american jobs act. turning up the heat on congress to act quickly. nbc tracie potts joins us from washington with more on the president's plans. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. good morning, everyone. expect to see the president back on the road again this week pushing his plan first in ohio. then north carolina on wednesday. $447 billion to create jobs in this country.

but first, the president will speak about that today at the white house in the rose garden with teachers, police, firefighters and other public workers. he wants to give states money to help save their jobs, but republicans see that as more stimulus and are unlikely to support it. also unlikely to support another extension of unemployment insurance. but it looks like there may be some common ground on a couple of other areas, like extending and expanding this year's payroll tax cuts, extending it for workers and expanding it now to include employers, as well. they also have some agreement on passing trade deals, not yet though decided how all of this will be paid for. lynn. >> tracie potts there for us in washington, thank you. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. good morning, bill. >> for three weeks in a row, we had the hurricanes, the

wildfires and all the flooding. this week, quiet. we have our one lone tropical system. last week, we had three, now we're down to maria this one could scare bermuda and then brush the canadian maritimes. the surfers will love the waves from this storm. the beaches there will be a bit of a rip current threat, but that's it. otherwise a quiet weather pattern. this storm will do a big hook. close enough to bermuda to give them a scare and then come up here and brush out around st. john, halifax, possibly nova scotia, but we look just fine for maria. i don't expect big weather stories this week. we won't have any flooding. you never know when fires will pop up, but as far as rainfall goes and hurricanes, nice and quiet. it's a warm morning this will be the weather story of the week.

enjoy the warmth today. minneapolis, chicago, through the great lakes, even if you're in new england, if when you are driving to work and you can roll down the windows, appreciate it. you may have to turn the heater on, some areas will be in the 40s for lows as we go throughout the week. right now not a lot going on. showers and thunderstorms off the north carolina coast. we have cold air coming down from canada. it's very hot today we feel like summer just about everywhere. once this front drops down, that's when the temperatures will take the dip. one spot we can't give you relief is in texas. look at this. still in the 100s the next two days here in austin. wednesday, thursday, friday, we cool off a little bit to the mid 90s. that's the exception, everyone else should be cooler. lynn, texas, once again, probably the only spot in the country that won't get the relief this week. everyone else a good taste of fall. >> all right, bill, thank you very much. your euro jitters hit wall

welcome back to "first look," i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. on yesterday's 9/11 anniversary, fighter jets escorted two planes after passengers aroused suspicions because of their use of the bathroom. one plane was going to new york, the other to detroit. all of the passengers who created the security concerns were released after questioning. niger's government says one of moammar gadhafi's sons has been intercepted in niger. a spokesman for the country indicated he has not been granted refugee status.

libyan rebels claim to have taken final hold over one of the strong holds of gadhafi's loyalists. and an anti-american cleric is urging his followers to stop attacking u.s. troops in iraq so their withdrawal from the country is not slowed. the call is aimed at putting pressure on baghdad's political leaders who are considering asking some forces to stay. mexico's oil companies says seven workers, including two americans who were missing in the gulf of mexico since thursday have now been rescued. two bodies were found and one other worker is still missing. the group escaped to a capsule after tropical storm nate disabled their rig. in india, one person was killed after an overcrowded balcony collapsed and six others were hurt. the cave-in happened during a festival celebrating a hindu god. the dow opens today at 10,992 after sink 303 points on

friday. the s&p tumbled 316789 the nasdaq fell 61 points. looking at overseas trading, in tokyo the knnikkei stumbled 201 points. the hang seng plummeted 836. the same worries about europe that sparked a broad selloff on wall street friday caught up with asian markets today. despite strong data out of china this weekend, investors sold off stocks and sent the euro to a six-month low this morning. global markets were rattled friday after a top german board member resigned from the european central bank, reportedly over its controversial bond buying program. yesterday, protesters in greece clashed with police after a fresh round of austerity measures. meanwhile, fallout from carrying billions in greek debt could spread to three of france's largest banks, now bracing for possible downgradings from moody's. if that happens it's a safe bet stocks at home will suffer

aftershocks. look for retail sales, inflation and manufacturing data to keep investors on edge this week. yahoo!'s ousted chief carol bartz resigned from the company's board days after saying she would stay on in that role. it probably didn't help that after being fired as ceo, bartz told a magazine yahoo!'s board were, quote, dufuses. cargill recalled 100,000 pounds of turkey after a portion tested positive for salmonella. the price of gas is up to an average of $3.67 a gallon. finally, precious pieces of aviation history fetched a high price at auction this weekend. photographs of amelia earhart and her flight goggles brought

welcome back to "first look." in sports, an opening day in the nfl dedicated to remembering 9/11 ended with the new york jets in a much tougher fight

with the dallas cowboys than anyone expected. here's nbc's fred roggin. good morning. it was an opening sunday to the nfl season like none other. fans and teams united around the nation with one common bond, to remember 9/11. we start in new jersey 12 miles from ground zero. an emotional pregame ceremony before the jets/cowboys game. this came down to the final minutes when the jets special teams came up big. but the punt -- trufont picked it up and was in for the game-tying touchdown. new york completed the comeback with 32 seconds left. the jets rally from 14 town to beat the cowboy webs 27-24. the tributes continued in our nation's capital before the giants/redskins game. new york's eli manning led the league in interceptions and he was back at it yesterday. kerrigan a pick six and the redskins won it 28-14. eagles are one of the favorites to win the super bowl. if they continue to play like this, hand them the trophy. eagles beat the rams, 31-13.

speaking of the super bowl, the steelers look like they have a super bowl hangover. baltimore won this one, 35-7. the panthers cam newton had a record breaking day for the cardinals. he threw over 400 yards in his debut, but not enough. cards held on to win it, 28-21. how is life without peyton manning going for the colts? not very well. collins fumbled twice and ben tate did the rest. career day filling in for foster. texas won it big, 34-7. finally, if you thought the football players were fired up, you obviously missed the women's final of the u.s. open. it's serena williams taking on samantha stosur. williams with a forehand winner, but stosur reached for the return, and when she did, serena shouted come on. the umpire awarded the point to stosur. williams exploded. ril y williams called the umpire i hate her, said she was ugly inside and a few other things we can't say on tv.

ser rememb serena was off her game and lost at the u.s. open. that's your "first look" at sports. i'm fred roggin. >> and here is bill karins who is lovely inside and out. >> what do you do on the tennis court? >> i keep it cool. i may throw my racket once in a while, but i don't throw words out there. good morning. big changes coming this week. we're not talking about flooding or anything like that, the temperatures will dip. we have a couple flood warnings out there. the river levels have come down in all cases, but the end of this week, we should be fine. there are a few showers and storms around yesterday, but they were not all that widespread. now we are completely dry, and you probably will want to bring your sunglasses today. most of us will see a sunny day. temperatures mild, in the 80s from new york down to d.c.

"contagion" a lot of people were on the fence about this one. the germ-thriller took the top spot with just over $23 million reaching expectations. >> 23. eh. >> tough crowd. despite dismal or overall box office figures for this weekend compared to last year. "warrior" debuted with just over $5.5 million, still good enough for third place. it may be the year of the r-rated comedy, but bucky larson "born to be a star" bombed with just $1.5 million for the weekend. did we even talk about it on friday? i don't think we did. finally, could a new showbiz power couple be evolving? tmv is reporting over the
