11:00 am
napolitano said the new rules will take effect after videos like this were posted on the internet. this was a 6-year-old in new orleans receiving a hands on screening that out raged people who saw this tape. michael boyd is an aviation analyst and president of the boyd group. thank you for joining us. >> mire pleasure. >> that was in april. we have seen others like that. we know that parents and just about everybody concerned about the way children were being treated in the screenings. is this a smart move? >> it's a natural move and keep in mind, it's not just the children being abused. think of the screeners. this is a move in the right direction and that should have been in place already. >> this would affect children under the age of 12. what kind of screenings would they go through in your opinion and the best way to screen a child that sadly in this day and age could be used to carry something on a plane that doesn't need to be there.
11:01 am
>> the usual one of the full body screeners. children are just as vulnerable to be caught with those as you and i are. we don't need to pat-down children necessarily. again, it's threat identification and not just looking for pointy objects. it's a move in the right direction, but should have been there already. >> why did it take so long. >> we don't have good management. it's as simple as that. the screeners are good people and they have to go through the processes they know don't make any sense. we need to get focus up there and we haven't had it in years. >> the chief as well as secretary napolitano said maybe in the near future we can see this change with adults when it comes to having to take our shoes off. she said the liquid ban won't be going anywhere. what do you make of that change for adults? >> already in denver, you don't have to take off your shoes.
11:02 am
it has been that way for several weeks and looking for the liquid thing, putting the liquids through a magnet does not make them safer. it's great for show. the high school kid wants to impress his girlfriend by hijacking an airplane will be deterred. a professional terrorist is dying laughing at this stuff. >> a lot of parents happy to see the change where it affects children under 12. nato aircraft are helping and taliban insurgents are targeting kabul. they struck nato headquarters and police buildings with pocket-propelled grenades. the embassy and nato said no staff were wounded, but four police officers and two civilians were killed. i'm joined by the chief correspondent richard engle. 77 american soldiers were injury skptd truck bomb attack. what would make of these
11:03 am
incidents? >> the truck bomb attack was a massive bomb that was driven towards the u.s. military base in eastern afghanistan. destroyed part of the perimeter wall and caused a very high number of injuries. that luckily was a several ton truck bomb that didn't get into the base. this attack was of a very different nature. it's good that you showed the map of how the u.s. embassy compound. a few blocks away, militants were able to go into a building that was under construction bringing with them a large number of grenades. they went up to the roof of the building and then started firing apparently indiscriminately down to the compound and the nato headquarters and i should say several other buildings in the neighborhood. while that attack was going, that took several hours to play
11:04 am
out. the u.s. military responded by sending an attack helicopter to drive that under construction. this battle was under way and at least two or others. >> hillary clinton said they are going to ensure that those who perpetrated this attack were dealt with. >> some of them were suicide attac attacks. that won't take too long. >> the organization behind them. >> the person -- not the truck, these were the people on the roof top. the people on the roof top, those are odds suicide attacks. they are starting to attack a heavily fortified base. they know they will fight to the death. the people who carried out the attack are dealt with. >> what did you make of her comment. >> this is what we are hearing.
11:05 am
if it were that easy to deal with the taliban, it would be over 10 years ago. primarily due to the weakness of the government. >> live for us, thank you, richard. maybe home soon. an iranian court set bail at $500,000 clearing the way for shane bauer and josh fattal. ann curry sat down with the president and said the jailed hikers go ahead go free in days. >> we tried last year to free one of the three persons. we are also trying to make arrangements for their freeze om of the other two. i think these two persons will be freed in a couple of days. >> nbc's ali, what is the latest
11:06 am
we are hearing about this possibility they could be free in days, as he put it? >> that's right. in that interview with ann curry, they gave the surprise news that these two guys may be free in the next couple of days. more importantly than that in my opinion and here when i go-go to speak to the lawyer of the two hikers, he told us about this bail. he was the first person to tell us about this half million dollar bail for the two hikers. this was the most encouraging sign. the judiciary is extremely powerful and the ultimate decision lies in their hands. we know the president were to try to release the short according to him. it didn't happen in the timing he wanted. the judiciary didn't let it happen. now they are saying half a million dollars bail is a dead certainty. we have to see when it's going to happen. two days in iran may not be 48 hours, but it will be imminent.
11:07 am
hopefully the guys will be back home in good health. >> in the interview with ann curry, the president also said something about prisoners being held in america. is he trying to negotiate here or is it truly on humanitarian conditions that they may be released? >> you are absolutely right. he always mentioned iranian prisoners. he mentioned it since the three hikers were arrested over two years ago. there will be a double strategy to this. on the one side, if you want to make a swap with iranians in america, it's easier to do that with a couple of people who are being convicted rather than two people that are languishing in a jail not charged with anything. on the other hand, they have been given a very heavy sentence if they are hard onned and set free on bail. everyone knows they won't come
11:08 am
back. he will look magnanimous approaching the world stage. >> live for us in tehran, thank you, ali. to 2012 politics, michele bachmann is not backing down after going after rick perry. congresswoman bachman drew roaring applause after hitting him on an executive order he signed to mandate the hpv vaccine for teen girls. forcing them to get the injection is wrong and suggested it was motivated by ties to drug companies. she doubled down on the attack on the "today" show. >> it's very clear that capitalism could have likely been the cause. the governor's former chief of staff was the cleave lhief lobbr the drug company. i had a mother me her daughter took that vaccine injection and she suffered from mental retardation there after.
11:09 am
>>. >> joining me is an msnbc contributor. also time magazine's white house correspondent. we have two michaels here. you are both michael s. i will start with you. what do you make of congresswoman bachman. people said she was down for the count and she came back swinging and in a follow-up this morning on today. >> i still think long-term the prognosis for her candidacy is not good, but she scored points with perry last night. it goes to his cred on the protector of individual rights and libertieliberties. more problematic is the aspect of the chief of staff who becomes the lobbyist and gets what he was looking for. it's not good for repairing. >> let me bring you in on this. it may not put michele bachmann in the white house, but
11:10 am
certainly this topic has been reported heavily in the state of texas and now on a national platform and as michael points out, it puts this front-runner seems to be floating through the air. bringing them back down to earth. >> he is clearly the front-runner. michele bachmann doesn't have an electability argument yet, but she does open the door on this pay to play narrative. that will be built over the coming months not just over republican rivals, but the record where there no limits on the campaign contributions and there dozens of incidences where he has done things after he got contributions or before and this is something perry will have to deal with. >> let me play one more exchange. when rick perry was booed on immigration. let me play that. >> that are is the american way. no matter how you got into that state from the standpoint of your parents brought you there or what have you, that's what we
11:11 am
have done in the state of texas. >> the american way is not to give taxpayers subsidized benefits to people who have broken our laws and are here illegally. that is not the american way. >> still the front-runner, but no one upons to hear boos from an audience filled with republicans and mostly tea party members. that is not a good thing. >> the winner of the debate was barack obama last night. president obama won that debate. these visuals are not good long-term for the gop given the stature. if you see their numbers lately to host a debate like this. the big take away is that the west wing was probably happy seeing that venue and forum. the reaction for example when ron paul was asked a hypothetical with a guy in the er with an injury. do you let him die? somebody yells out, yes, you do.
11:12 am
not good for the gop. >> what do you think about president obama winning this one. >> i agree. i don't know if he won, but it's true the republican race is a bright spot for obama in a bleak outlook. not over the next several months, but for reelection. he ho will have to make this a comparison and republicans are doing his work for him. he looks like he is trying to get the economy going and republicans are bloodying each other. >> thank you both michael ss. a millionaire accused of murdering his wife is caught on surveillance acting bizarrely while talking to his daughter. >> no, i wouldn't do that. >> what were they doing in this tape and could it affect the trial? the story ahead. a group of strangers risked their own lives to save a motorcyclist trooped beneath a

car that burst into flame. wait until you see what happens after this moment. a live look in columbus, ohio. president obama takes his jobs plan to a school undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation. his plan will not only put americans back to work, but improve the nation's schools. stay with us. 11:16 am
>> welcome back to news nation. we are moments away from president obama taking the stage at a high school in columbus, ohio. pushing his $447 billion jobs bill at a school undergoing million dollar renovations. it's the kind of renovation that will put people to work and perhaps help the economy turn around. another story we are following, former baseball star manny ramirez was released from a
11:17 am
florida jail a couple hours ago. the 12-time all-star was arrested accused of slapping his wife in an argument at their home in south florida. he was released from the broward county jail on a $2500 bail. he was ordered to have no direct contact. he denies hitting his wife. he tested positive for performance enhancing substance. he left the game and rather than face 100 game is you spending for a second violation of major league baseball's drug policy. a high profile murder case in florida that involves a millionaire developer of a millionaire's wife. he admitted he shot her and claimed his wife shot herself. jail house tapes of raising questions about the defendant's behavior. mark potter has the latest out of orlando. >> jury selection is also occurring in the same courtroom where casey anthony was tried.
11:18 am
the actual trial in this case will be in a different room and could begin as early as tomorrow. take two weeks. >> juror number 1136, will you raise your hand? >> in a case that has drawn international attention, bob ward is accused of murdering his wife diane in their lavish florida mansion. >> no, i wouldn't do that. >> then later in jail, hamming it up with their daughter and late wife's sister. >> hey, handsome. >> he and the daughter making facial gestures that many felt were inappropriate for a somber occasion. >> i can only imagine. >> the witness said the daughter was just trying to cheer up her dad. when the jury is selected, it will hear two versions of how his wife diane ward died last year. authorities claim ward shot and killed her and called 911 saying i just shot my wife. she's dead. at the time police said it was
11:19 am
cut and dry. >> it's a simple case and he said he shot his wife and she can be found in the bedroom. that's what we found when we got on the scene. >> the death occurred near orlando. reports at the time said ward was facing bankruptcy. the home was in foreclosure. >> what's the manner of death? >> homicide. >> dr. g on her reality show ruled the angle of the shot and the distance from which it was fired inconsistent with suicide. >> that are is probably one of the most personality evidence and the most litigated piece of evidence. >> bob ward said it was not homicide. >> it was a very tragic accident. >> in a jail house phone call he said he shot herself as he struggled to take away her hand gun. >> diane killed herself tonight.
11:20 am
i have nothing to be worried about other than i am trying to get the gun out of her hand. >> still to be announced is what prosecutors believe could be the motive for murder. the behavior raised plenty of eyebrows. >> earlier defense attorneys asked to rule that the videotapes never be shown in the trial. prosecutors said that there was no need for such a ruling though because they have no intention of showing the tapes to the jury in the murder trial. >> thank you very much. >> we want to show a live picture of the ft. hayes arts and academic school. the president will speak there any minute now. a multimillion-dollar renovation at the school. obama said he is continuing to push his americas job act proposal. we are keeping an eye on the event and bring his comments to you as soon as it starts. we will go to a break and be right back.

>> welcome back. incredible video out of utah. a motorcyclist was pinned under burning wreckage after crashing with a car, but before firefighters could get to the scene, a group of heroic bystanders risked their lives to pull the man from under the car. miguel has more of the story. >> oh, my gosh! the road study crash erupted in flame in logan, utah. a fireball by the time the first bystander account check for victims. soon he was joined by others including a woman who laid down on the ground and spotted the motorcyclist, a 21-year-old man pinned beneath the burping bmw. >> we had to help him. >> a construction worker tried to move the car and within seconds was joined by a group of

11:30 am
in the president's pay fors yesterday, we see permanent tax increases put into effect in order to pay for temporary spending. i just don't think that's really going to help our economy the way it could. >> kristin well kerr joins us live from the white house. insiders say he could be prepared to pass this in pieces. what more can you tell us about that. >> that's right. a little bit of a contradiction going on within the white house. david axelrod said it cannot be passed ala cart. later on today, senior administration officials said the president would be open to passing portions of this bill if it came to his desk and said send me the rest of my plan. the president still wants the
11:31 am
entirety of the jobs act passed, however it seems as though at this point white house officials are saying the president would be open to passing portions of this plan. the president has been stressing the immediacy of passing the bill. this is the reason they put some of the things in the plan that were supported by republicans at other times. it's interesting that this portion of rationing of this plan when i don't know home times the president said pass it bill now. he said it yesterday in the rose garden and we know how many times he said it and the address at the noint session of congress. >> they said look, doesn't this weaken your bargaining power? they said no. they believe they have the will of the american people. the american people essentially expressing through polls and otherwise they want to see major
11:32 am
action taken right now in terms of producing jobs. their argument is look, if congress doesn't act to eventually pass the entirety of this plan. they will make it clear to the american people especially in the 2012 campaign that it was republican who is resisted passing this. as you just heard though, there is a bit of a battle brewing here. house speaker john boehner and other republicans are saying look, we are not going to get behind a plan that is paid for by increasing taxes. the white house officials have answered that by saying these pay fors are not necessarily going to go into effect. in other words, the super committee could come up with an al termative plan for paying for the american jobs act. still there is a lot of back and forth going on about the fact that the pay fors do include what republicans view as tax increases. >> the president is in speaker
11:33 am
boehner's home state. a critical swing state. he had at this high school that received multimillion-dollar renovations that. i might be introducing -- let's see who is coming up. we will see if this is the president entering. i can't really hear. there you have it. before he makes it, the president is using this high school as an example of how you can put workers back to work. >> that's right. we will see a lot more of this in the coming days. the president heads to north carolina to a small business. he will continue to push this to the american people. we asked the officials will he only be going to battle ground states and they said no. he will be visiting a number of states throughout the united states. here's the president. >> hello, columbus! it is good to be back in the state of ohio.
11:34 am
>> a couple of people i want to make sure you know are here. artie duncan is in the house. the secretary of education. superintendent of columbus city schools, dr. gene t harris is here. the principal of ft. hayes metropolitan education center, milton rough et is here. and the mayor of the great city of columbus, michael colton is in the house. it is a great honor to be here at ft. hayes, one of the best high schools in ohio. i want to thank tom for that introduction. he just gave me a quick tour. let me just say these buildings
11:35 am
look great. he did a good job. i wouldn't mind taking a few classes here. you have computers in every classroom, state-of-the-art graphic design and science labs, new media center, music rooms. when you combine that without sta standing teachers and a challenging curriculum, you have the foundation for what you need to learn and graduate and compete in this 21st century economy. ft. hayes, i'm here to talk about exactly that. about the economy. i came to talk about how we can get to a place where we are creating good middle class jobs
11:36 am
again. jobs that pay well and offer economic security. the renovation of ft. hayes is a great example of where the jobs come from if we get our act in washington. if they stop woring about their jobs and start worrying about your jobs. by yesterday, i sent congress the american jobs act. it's pretty thick. this is a plan that does two things. it puts people back to work and puts money in the pockets of working americans. everything in the american jobs act is the kind of proposal that in the past has been supported by both republicans and
11:37 am
democrats. everything will be paid for. every one of you can make it happen by sending a message to congress that says pass this bill. ohio, if you pass this bill, right here in this state, tens of thousands of construction workers will have a job again. this is one of the most common sense ideas out there. all over the country, there roads and bridges and schools just like ft. hayes in need of repair. some of the buildings here at ft. hayes were original built in the civil war. that's old. when buildings are that old, they start falling apart. they start leaking and ceilings start to cave in and there is no heat in the winder and air conditioning in the summer.
11:38 am
the ventilation is so poor it can make students sick. how do we expect our kids to do their very best in a situation like that? we can't. every child deserves a great school and we can give it to them, but we have to pass this bill. our outstanding senator has been fighting to make this happen. those of you here at ft. hayes have been making it happen. a few years back, you decide to renovate this school. you didn't just repair what was broken, you rebuilt this school for the 21st century with faster internet and cutting edge technology. that hasn't just created a better, safer learning environment for the students, but created good jobs for construction workers. you just heard tom say it's
11:39 am
created over 250 jobs for masons and concrete workers and carpenters and plumbers and electricians and many of those jobs are filled by the good people of columbus, ohio. here's the thing. there schools all throughout ohio that need this kind of renovation. there is a bridge in cincinnati that connects ohio to kentucky that needs this kind of renovation. there construction projects like these all across the country just waiting to get started and there millions of unemployed krurk workers looking for a job. my question to congress, what is earth are we waiting for? i don't know about you, but i don't want any student to study in broken down schools. i want our kids to study in grit schools.
11:40 am
i don't want the newest airports and the fastest railroads being built in china. i want them built here in the united states of america. there is work to be done. there workers ready to do it. let's tell congress, pass this rile rig bill right away. >> pass this bill! pass this bill! pass this bill! pass this bill! pass this bill! >> pass this jobs bill and there will be funding to save the jobs of up to 14,000 ohio teachers and cops and firefighters. think about it. there places like south korea that are adding teachers to prepare their kids for the economy at the same time as we are laying off our teachers left and right.
11:41 am
we got school districts that have eliminated all extra curriculars. art, sports, you name it. you have situations where i just heard a story driving over here. i met a young man who was a music teacher in philly. his total budget is $100 for teaching music in a bunch of schools. they are using buckets to do drums because they can't afford actual musical instruments. you see it here in ohio. budget cuts are forcing superintendents here in columbus and all over the state to make layoffs they don't want to make. it is unfair to the kids and under mines our future and it has to stop. tell congress to pass the american jobs act so we can put our teachers back in the classroom where they belong!
11:42 am
>> tell them to pass this bill. they can help people to create most of the new jobs in the country. that's america's small business owners. it's all well and good that big corporations have seen their profits roaring back. we want them to hire people as well. this bill cuts taxes for small businesses that hire new employees. it cuts taxes for small businesses that raise salaries for current employees. it cuts small business payroll taxes in half. let's tell congress instead of talking about helping america's job creators, let's do something to help america's job creators and pass this bill right away!
11:43 am
>> pass this bill! pass this bill! pass this bill! >> if congress passes this jobs bill, companies will get new tax credits for hiring america's veterans. we ask these men and women to leave their careers and families and risk their lives. to make sure that we are protected. the last thing they should have to do is fight for a job when they come home. that's why congress needs to pass this bill. it will hel00help hundreds of thousands of them find jobs. it's also got a $4,000 tax credit for companies to hire anybody who spent more than months looking for a job. it extends unemployment
11:44 am
insurance, but said if you are collecting benefits you will be connected to temporary work to build your skills and enhance your resume while looking for a term nent job. if we get congress to pass this bill, the typical working family will get $1500 in tax cuts next year. $1500 that would have been taken out of your paycheck will go back into your pocket. if congress doesn't act, if congress refuses to pass this bill, the middle class families will get hit with a tax increase at the worst possible time. we can't let that happen. some folks have been working pretty hard to keep tax breaks for the wealthiest americans and tell them they need to fight just as hard. they need to fight harder for middle class families. tell them to pass this jobs bill.
11:45 am
so the american jobs act will lead to new jobs for construction workers. jobs for teachers and jobs for veterans and young people and the unemployed. it will provide tax swallow every worker and small business in america and will not add to the deficit. it will be paid for. we will pay for this plan. we will pay down the debt and we will do it by following the same principal that every family follows. we will make sure the government lives within its means. we will cut what we can't afford to pay for what we really need, including some cuts we wouldn't make if we hadn't racked up so much debt over the last decade. here's the other thing, columbus. we have to make sure that everybody pays their fair share. including the wealthiest americans and biggest corporations.
11:46 am
after all, we have got to decide what our priorities are. do you want to keep tax loopholes for oil companies or do you want to renovate more schools so the construction workers have jobs again? do you want to keep tax breaks for multimillionaires and billionaires? or do you want to put teachers back to work and help small busineeses and cut taxes for middle class families? columbus, we know what's right. we know what to do to create jobs now. and in the future. we know that if we want businesses to start here and stay here and hire here, we have to outinnovate every country on earth and we have to manufacture and sell more goods that are stamped with three proud words.
11:47 am
made in america. we need to build an economy that lasts. columbus, that starts now. that starts with your help. democrats and republicans have supported every kind of proposal in the american jobs act. we need to tell them to support the proposals now. yesterday there were republicans quoted in washington saying that even if they agree with the proposals in the american jobs act, they shouldn't pass it because it would give me a win. that's the kind of game playing we have gotten used to in washington. think about that. they supported this stuff in the past, but they are thinking maybe they don't do it this time because obama is promoting it. give me a win?
11:48 am
this is not about giving me a win. this is not about giving republicans or democrats a win. it's about giving the american people a win. giving ohio a win and your jobs and lives and futures. giving our kids a win. maybe there is some people in congress who would rather settle differences at the ballot box than work together right now. i have news for them. the next election is 14 months away. the american people don't have the luxury of waiting that long. you got folks who are living week to week, paycheck to paycheck. they need action and they need it now. i am asking all of you to lift your voice and not just here in columbus, but anybody who is watching and listening and following online, i need you to call and e-mail and tweet and fax and visit and tell your congress person that the time for gridlock and the time for games is over.
11:49 am
