game in pennsylvania. and television gold. who are the big winners in last night's primetime emmy awards? good morning, everyone. i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc. and we begin this morning with the tragic air crash. federal investigators are combing the nevada crash site where nine people were killed friday when a stunt plane plunged into a crowd of spectators. meanwhile, stunning new video taken by a spectator shows the tragedy as it happened. officials say they've already recovered key flight data and what could be an in-flight video of the wreckage. jay gray has our report. >> reporter: as investigators

continued sifting through the wreckage in reno, they've located clues that could lead to explain the tragedy. >> there was a camera identified, video camera. fragments were found. memory cards have been identified. all of those will be going to the research and engineering laboratory in d.c. to determine if they have any video images of the aircraft. >> reporter: ntsb officials also hope to pull important evidence off a recorder. >> the aircraft recording system actually recorded the data in two ways. on to a memory card, but it's also transmitted to the racing team crew. >> reporter: they hope that data can provide insight into what still pictures just before the crash seemed to show. part of the plane's tail section looks like it's missing, which could have caused pilot jimmy leeward to lose control. >> shock. absolute shock. never dreamed that something like this would happen to someone that you know. >> reporter: leeward and eight spectators died in the crash,

including this man whose family believes he perished protecting his son and two friends, who survived. >> he probably sheltered his son. that's the kind of guy he was. very, very good dad. very good husband. very in love with my sister. >> reporter: emotions just like the questions that continue to linger after the tragic crash. jay gray, nbc news. elsewhere this morning, president obama will unveil a deficit reduction plan that calls for an increased tax rate for those making more than $1 million a year. but republicans opposed to any tax hikes whatsoever are calling the president's suggestions dead on arrival. tracy potts joins us from washington with more. >> reporter: including what lawmakers already agreed to last summer, this plan would cut over $4 trillion over the course of a decade, but it would mean the rich pay more. the hallmark of president

obama's deficit cuts is the so-called buffett rule, named for billionaire warren buffett. a minimum tax rate for millionaires so they never pay a smaller portion than the middle class. >> making sure we live within our means and asking everyone to pay their fair share. >> reporter: that, plus rolling back the bush tax cuts for couples making over $250,000 and closing tax loopholes for big oil companies and corporate jets amounts to $1.5 trillion in savings, the president will say today. >> does anybody think that's a good idea other than the president? >> reporter: republicans argue tax hikes will prevent the rich from creating jobs. >> when you say we're going to tax those people, because most people are not those people, that's class warfare. >> reporter: the president will also outline over $.5 trillion in savings for medicare, medicare, and other medical programs. republicans claim seniors would

eventually pay. >> that puts 15 bureaucrats in charge of rationing prices to medicare for current seniors. >> reporter: the president's plan won't raise the minimum age for medicare and won't touch social security. the president will also propose more than $1 trillion in savings from bringing home troops from iraq and afghanistan. lynn. >> tracy potts, thank you. here's your first look at some of the other news going on. saturday the guys over west virginia also saw the tragic ending of an air show. one plane crashed and burst into flames attempting to perform an acrobatic maneuver. the pilot died on impact. investigators are still looking into the cause. a life imitated part in oklahoma this weekend. at least one tornado touched down. this storm didn't cause any major damage or injuries.

friday night lights turnsed into a night at fights. a melee erupted in the fourth quarter. disciplinary actions against a total of 12 players are pending. finally, for just one day, the public was given a rare glim ms at a top-secret relic from the cold war. this spy satellite was declassified and put on display. the government spy tool nicknamed big bird carried out surveillance missions from space photographing images of the former soviet union, china, and other targets around the globe. well, now for a check of your national weather, we go to wtvj meteorologist ryan phill s phillips. good to have you here. i know you work evenings there in miami. you're just waking up like the rest of us. >> one extreme to the other.

kind of like the weather here, as a matter of fact. did you change up the wardrobe this weekend? >> i pulled out the sweaters. i liked it, actually. i wanted to start a little fire. >> fall on the way. officially beginning on friday, but the holding on to some summertime weather in some locations in the nation. here are your current temperatures. mostly clear skies in the northeast. chilly weather in place. boston at 52. we'll come back to that in a moment. also have to highlight the northern plains with temperatures dropping to the lower 50s already across minnesota into the dakotas and central nebraska. 61 right now in washington. how about that 43 in albany? again, skies mostly clear this morning. philadelphia, 54. buffalo at 51. what happens today? the northeast, still lots of sunshine. still dry. 63 with some clouds in boston. 72 in new york. 72 in philadelphia. coming from the west will be rain chances on the increase in the days ahead. it starts today in buffalo and

pittsburgh. we had a cool sunny weekend in new york. today, enjoy the sunshine. 72. then rain chances come back tuesday and thursday and friday. i don't think it will rain all day each and every day, but at least a chance is back. those sunny days, well, we'll give them a break for a few days at least. across the northern plains and into the deep south, showers and thunderstorms on the move. this is the weather that will be coming into the mid-atlantic and northeast on tuesday. for this morning, violent weather coming into locations across east-central texas. storms through dallas overnight. some strong, gusty winds tucked away in this line of storms. also into memphis as well. watch out for some travel delays in both locations. 73 in the nation's capital today. 71, chicago. 78 in kansas city. the showers now ending in texas where we could use more rain, but storm chances continue to

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. the release of two american hikers jailed in iran has been delayed because a judge who's needed to sign off on bail paperwork is on vacation.

the lawyer for the men tell nbc news the judge is out until tuesday. in yemen, government forces open fire on it tens of thousands of anti-government protesters killing at least 26. the attack was the deadliest in months on demonstrators demanding their president step down. a magnitude 6.9 earthquake has rocked northeast india, nepal, and tibet. the full extent of the damage is not yet known because remote areas have been cut off by mudslides. in florida, authorities say a man killed his wife and then shot and critically wounded a pastor and an associate pastor during services at a nearby church. church goers managed to tackle the gunman and wrestle his gun away. and twin girls from sudan who were born fused at the head have been successfully separated in london. the 11-month-olds underwent surgery last went and are now in

good health. now here's your "first look" at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,509. the s&p went up six points. the nasdaq added 15. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo, the nikkei rose 9 -- 195 points. for wall street to keep up its current winning streak, big ben and the fed hold the key as to where stocks are headed this week. the s&p 500 posted just under a a 5.5% gain last week. the nasdaq gained over 6%. the dow rose just under 5%. for stocks to click like that that week, investors hope the federal reserve will take dramatic steps to revive the economy during meetings on tuesday and wednesday. still, most analysts think a big bond buy is a long shot.

wall street will also look for clear signs european leaders will follow through on their urgency to tackle the debt crisis. the biggest debt of this week will include no less than six reports on the struggling housing market as well as weekly first-time unemployment claims. among companies reporting earnings, wall street will closely watch fedex, often seen as a measuring stick for how the economy is performing. and finally, a not very surprising survey reports 34% of americans who took a summer holiday are struggling with depression after returning home. maybe more surprising that the number isn't a little higher. well, in health news this morning, a really disturbing new study shows as the economy began to sink, the number of abused kids hospitalized with severe brain injuries spiked. the first hard data linking

welcome back to "first look" i'm lynn berry. in sports, michael vick had a bumpy right last night in his return to atlanta. >> reporter: good morning. michael vick's highly anticipated return to atlanta lasted just three quarters. the eagle's quarterback knocked out of the game after he hit his head. eagles had the lead, but the falcons had momentum. michael turner from three yards out. mault ryan threw a career high four touchdowns. falcons win a grudge match 35-31. tom blrady picked up where he left off last week. new england won easily 35-21. the carolina cam newton had another big game, but just like

last week, not enough. despite throwing over 400 yards, the super bowl champs were just too good. redskins have been a pleasant surprise this season. clawed and scratched their way to a victory. redskins win it 22-21. in san francisco, tomny romo blind sided and left the game with two fractured ribs. bailey finished off the niners with a field goal in the extra period. dallas rallied from ten down to win it 27-24. finally, remember what you were doing when you were 16? excited to get your driver's license? perhaps get your braces off? all big milestones. none of that compares to what this 16-year-old did. she became the youngest woman to ever win an lpga event. she won the classic by five

welcome back to "first look." it's time for your first look at entertainment news. last night, television celebrated itself at emmy awards in los angeles. mark barger has the highlights. >> reporter: five awards, including a second straight win as best comedy made "modern family" the big winner at sunday night's emmys. >> are you kidding me? that thing is counting down? oh, i don't know what i'm going to talk about in therapy next week now. >> reporter: one of "modern family" stars julie bowen earned best supporting actress in a

"the daily show" made it nine straight wins. mark barger, nbc news. >> elsewhere, at box office this weekend, the winner wasn't much of a surprise. by how much was unexpected. the 3d version of the 1994 classic animated musical "the lion king" made its debut in the top spot with a surprising $23.9 million. that was way above expectations. ryan gosselin's "drive" sped into third. "straw dogs" fizzled in fifth place with only $5 million.

then sarah jessica parker's "i don't know how she does it" bombed with a disappointing $4.5 million. but let's go back to the emmys. those are fun. all time highlight was coach taylor from "friday night lights" scoring. texas forever. >> it seemed like there was a lot of doubt. i wouldn't be here tonight. then here they are with the hardware. >> there was a lot of underdogs. melissa mccarthy -- i don't know how much you saw. she had an incredible speech. kyle chandler, big favorite. he had a great speech. those are your highlights. >> how much of it is about the fashion though? >> well, i'm lynn berry. this is "first look."
