those are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc. we begin with waiting for word as the government releases its september jobs report later today, the president is looking for dramatic ways to show he's in touch with americans who are taking to the street in protest all across the country aiming their frustration's nation's

banks. nbc's tracy pend oreilie potts >> reporter: some of that has spilled over as lawmakers try to work together and figure out if they can pass all or maybe just some of the president's jobs plan. >> you can hear me in the back. >> reporter: the occupy wall street protests have spread from new york, pennsylvania, florida, the west coast and washington. >> all: where are the jobs? >> the corporate greed machines that are supposed to be creating jobs for us are holding on to the money they're collecting and no jobs are trickling down. >> reporter: today analysts expect the new jobs report to show more jobs were created last month but with little or no impact on the unemployment rate. on capitol hill lawmakers are grappling with how to pay for the president's $447 billion jobs bill and we're seeing some of that same raw emotion.

>> you were going to win on this bill. you didn't teed to jam us. >> there has to be an end to this. >> reporter: republicans are trying to force a vote on the plan to prove all democrats aren't behind it. democrats are going to bait for the revised version which may include a 5% tax on millionaires. president obama says he's okay with that. >> i'm fine with the approach they're taking. >> proposing a partisan tax hike 13 months before an election won't create one single job. not one. >> reporter: now republicans have been accusing the press of spending too much time campaigning, lynn, and not enough time governing. >> tracie, thanks. gop presidential contender herman cain stirred up comments saying if you don't have a job or if you're not rich, you have no one to blame but yourself. well, last night on "the last word with lawrence o'donnell" he asked if cain still stands by

that. >> wlaurns, some people are unemployed through no fault of their own. i was referring to those people who have chosen to go and demonstrate on wall street for whatever reason is it's not real clear what reasons. i have been one of the strongest advocates for getting the economy growing because i air about the 14 million that are unemployed. my comment was directed at the people who were choosing to demonstrate against those on wall street rather than demonstrate against the white house which is responsible for ineffective policy that will impact the economy. that's where they ought to be demonstrating and that is where my comment was directed. >> "the last word" at 8:00.

with the thief long enough for her son to come out and chase him off. the woman suffered minor injuries. she didn't bend it like beckham but she did show soccer skills. michelle obama hosted the u.s. women's soccer team at the white house to promote healthy living for children. close to 50 kids attended the event taking part in drills and activities on the south lawn. the buildup for saturday's red river rivalry between texas and oklahoma is in full swing. watch it, bill. boomer, fans from each school battled in dallas at the seventh annual pigskin plane pull. the team from oklahoma was the fastest to pull the 737 aircraft across 50 yards but it's not necessarily a good omen. the winner usually winds up losing the football. seeing as though the sooners are

forecast as we go through saturday especially and even dallas, you have a chance for wet weather. with the horrible drought we can't really complain too much. florida, we start with you. palm bay, indian river, vero beach, showers to dole with. we're dry from west palm beach down into miami. later on this afternoon have the umbrella, rain in east central florida. as far as the storm tracker goes, you can see showers and storms up through central nebraska, also fargo has some showers, the back side of the storm snow in wyoming, wolf creek and colorado, three feet of snow yesterday. they're going to open up this weekend, $33 lift ticks. the first place i've seen that will open. heavy rain threat, mostly predominantly in the central plains this weekend so, lynn, today, can't complain too much. not too many problems out there. i'll bring you that forecast coming up. i think you'll like. >> bill, thanks so much. also coming up, financials lead the markets. mortgage rates make history. and one of the unexpected ways

welcome back to "first look." top news. an announcement from oslo, norway, that three women will be sharing this year's nobel peace prize. the president of liberian activists and a yemeni women's rights and democracy activist are being honored for, quote, their nonviolent struggle for the safety of women and women's rights to full participation in peace-building work." federal prosecutors launched a crackdown on california pot dispensa dispensaries.

wall street starts the day, 11,123 after gaining 183 and the s&p rose 20 point, the nasdaq went up 46. taking a look at overseas trading in tokyo. the nikkei added 83 while in hong kong the hang seng grew 534. no short taif term fix to europe's debt problems but for now investors are encouraged its leaders are working on a solution. at a meeting yesterday europe's leaders promised unlimited one-year loans to the region's lenders through 2013. that should help ease fears of financial instability and added protection. well, financials rallied here at home including morgan stanley which took a beating over fears of its exposure to european banks. back to school sales lifted most retailers. that along with news that initial jobless claims rose slightly less than expected last week. it's driving optimism that today's big jobs report will

confirm the economy is not slipping back into a recession. good news if you can afford to buy a home. average rates on a 30-year fixed mortgage have dipped below 4%. that's for the very first time in history. stock buy-back plan and quarterly dividend boost helped corning shares rise 7%. "the new york times" gained 13% on news mexican billionaire car loam slim boosted his share in the company. news of steve jobs' dead only resulted in a slight loss. sales of hit smartphones are strong and finally fans around the world are remembering steve jobs in their own way. apparently some folks are stock up on his style. tmz reports that st. croix, jobs go-to brand for those signature black mock turtlenecks has seen sales almost double since his passing. well, the nhl season kicks
