chief correspondent richard engle made his way to cairo. what's the latest? >> reporter: there were more clashes today, but nothing like we saw in the city yesterday. the clashes actually took place right in front of the bureau where i am standing right now. very close to the nile river. it began as a christian protest, a peaceful protest with several thousand demonstrators trying to demand justice. they were holding a march going to the central television station which is just a few hundred yards from here. as they approach the television station, they came across soldiers with pushing and shoving and that's when things descended very quickly. they came very violent. the soldiers dispatched to the military vehicles you were talking about that started plowing through the crowd. the demonstrators picked up stones and started throwing them

>> we know last time around we made a speech about mormonism and talked about that in the vain of jfk talking about catholici catholicism. what mitt romney tried to stick to is the economy. this is a big issue. his religion in two of the four early states, iowa and south carolina, his team thinks he might have a chance to win even with this issue out here it came close last time. they are not focusing on iowa and south carolina. they are focusing on new hampshire and nevada out west and thinking they can go win a longer term race. >> the dynamic is different. he is the front-runner and next in line depending on the poll you see is rick perry. now you have a lout voice who reports rick pero record attacking. he is attacking this man's religion. >> yeah.

rick perry was asked whether or not he thinks form e mormonism is a cult as jeffers said. he said no, i don't think that his campaign has tried to distance himself from the comments. he doesn't renounce the endorsement, but that he doesn't espouse the same views. i think they both want to get past this issue. maybe start talking about the economy. for someone like rick perry, the debate coming tomorrow night. it's important to get back on the right track. >> thank you so much. greatly appreciate it. let's bring in the daily beast reporter, mckay, thanks for joining us. you are here for two reasons. you are a great writer and also mormon. >> that's right. >> i want your thoughts on how this is being handled. this could come up in the debate and likely will. is he handling this in an effective way to help his
