i'm feeling great not only because of the surge, but i'm feeling great because a lot of people are taking a second look and they are saying maybe this long shot is not such a long shot. >> mark murray is here to break down the numbers. how does the field sit and how does the president stack up against that field? >> in a brand new poll, herman cain has taken the lead in the republican primary race getting support from 27% of republican primary voters. next is mitt romney at 23%. then rick perry at 16%. this is a big shakeup from our poll in august. so it's a 22-point increase for herman cain. you asked about the presidential general election head to head matchups. president obama is up 2 points

in mitt romney. then against cain, he's up 11%. 49% to 38%. he's up 12 points to rick perry. good numbers for obama there. it is important to note that in that matchup with mitt romney, you want to see the numbers close to 50 if you're the folks in the white house. >> the interesting thing to note about mitt romney is the inability that he's strog move up nationally from the 23% position. why isn't romney gaining more traction with the average voter? >> that's a great question. in our august survey, he was at 23%. in this survey he's at 23%. when you look inside the numbers, it's not that republican voters don't like romney. they like him fine. but he gets strong support from the republicans. he's maybe their second choice. he's hoping that's the formula for success later on. >> mark murray, great to see

you. >> thanks. >> now that he's sitting at the top of the national polls, it's time to find out more about the man who has everyone saying 999 right now. joanne, it's good to see you. most people hear herman cain's name, and they think of godfather's pizza. also that he would be on cruise control. writing books and living his life casually. what inspired him to jump into the race like this? what do you think people are latching on to that they like so much? >> he says in his book that this is herman cain. his inspiration to run for president came after his granddaughter was born. he looked at the country and felt like it was going in the wrong direction. he was also inspired when he asked a question of bill clinton back during the '90s. he felt like he made a difference then. he talks about it building up

over the course of many years that he felt that he was the guy that could turn the country around. >> when you talk about this book, after going through it, what did you find interesting? i got a sample of it on my ipad. i'm get sboting it. >> what i found strange is for a man that age, when you look at people in that generation, there are these huge defining events. vietnam, civil rights. all that took place in his formative years. he doesn't even mention that stuff in his book. he glosses through a lot of the painful moments you would think a black man of that age would have dealt with. incidents where as a young man, he drank from the white's only water fountain. breezes through it. he doesn't really seem to express any emotion about that time. he doesn't mention these huge

he's going to be going in the early states in iowa and new hampshire and expanding staff here. but he also says he's going to run a national campaign. he's in iowa today. tennessee later on. saying he's going to be running against president obama. >> there's more primary news coming out of new hampshire. could we be counting on a primary in early december? >> well, thomas i spoke to bill gardener. he's been setting the primary for a long time. he says he doesn't want to have it in december, but he may be forced to. having it in december in new hampshire would prevent a lot zoorific voters from getting to know candidates in this campaign that's been a late start compared to 2008. we're hoping for a january primary, but we don't know yet. >> all right. fingers are crossed. thank you. breaking news out of france right now. paris prosecutors have dropped their case against dominique strauss-kahn. a french writer claimed that he

tried to rape her during an interview in 2003. the ap reporting that the former imf chief reported to sexual aggression. this is the second legal victory for dominique strauss-kahn. we now know the name of the man police say opened fire in a southern california hair salon on wednesday leaving eight people dead. 42-year-old scott evans decraig has been arrested for murder. he surrendered without incident a half mile away from this shooting scene. it really has left the community in shock. kristin dahlgren is live for us with the latest. do we know more about a possible motive for why he would enter and kill all those people in cold blood? >> reporter: good morning. police still won't say what they believe the motive to be. i have been talking to people

who knew the victims here at the hair salon. they say that scott's ex-wife worked as a stylist here. they tell me she's among those who were killed. the two were involved in a custody dispute over a 7 or 8-year-old son and they were even in court this week in a routine hearing the day before the shooting. again, police say they are still investigating what a possible motive might be. they have now notified all of the eight victims' family members. we are expecting them to release the names of those victims later on today. the family though of the salon owner says that he is among those killed. i spoke earlier with a woman who had been coming here to have her hair done for 30 years. she told us about some of the shock. >> all right. kristen dahlgren, thank you. tomorrow occupy wall street protesters will have to vacate zuccotti park. that's where they have set up

shop for 27 days. demonstrators can return once the park is cleaned up. at least 11 protesters have been arrested after marching in downtown san francisco where several hundred people showed up outside wells fargo headquarters. and 90 colleges and universities across the country will participate in a student walkout. participants are demanding student loan relief. in less than an hour, the house is set to begin debate on an issue so devicive it nearly killed president obama's health care reform bill. the act would prevent women from using tax subsidies provided by the new law to buy health insurance plans that coverage abortions. the rhetoric is very passionate. >> this bill would also impose sweeping refusal provisions that not only undermine women's health care and women's rights, but actually endanger womens'

lives. this provision puts the preferences of hospitals above the lives of women. >> nbc's correspondent kelly o'donnell joins us with more. why the push now? >> republicans say that this is one of their promises in their pledge to america, which was their list of to dos, if they were to retake power in the house. they have done that. so this is kind of finding its time to bring this piece, which would undo some in the president's law. it was in the exact issue that derailed it when it was being passed in the first place. so it is one of the social issues being revisited when there's a break in the other action. house republicans can pass this. they have enough votes. it can't go anywhere in the senate. what you heard from gwen moore is some of the democratic opposition. they make the basic argument that federal money, even if it's two or three steps removed, should not be used to pay for

michelle bachmann just wrapped up her 2012 strategy session here in the big apple with donald trump. bachmann is the latest candidate from a group. including rick perry, mitt romney, and herman cain to discuss her campaign with the donald. and bachmann desperately needs new life in her campaign with only 5% support in our new poll. in other news today, the defense is gearing up for the conrad murray trial. the prosecution now wrapping its case against the former doctor. they called a cardiologist to the stand yesterday who rattled off a list of reasons why murray was negligent and leaving his medicated patient alone. >> it's like leaving a baby that's sleeping on your kitchen

countertop, so instead of that huge 20-minute delay, he could have gotten help that he needed within four minutes. >> former prosecutor john kelly joins me to talk about this. it's nice to have you here. as we learn more about the defense strategy, they plan to argue that jackson's pill popping is the cause of his death here. specifically, with the medication in his system of lorazepam. how might that work in his favor? >> the the defense is going to want to show that the propofol wasn't enough to be a lethal dose. that michael jackson taking the lorazepam and dr. murray didn't know about it and that's what caused his death. >> as you bring up the propofol, the big development yesterday about how the defense is dropping the claim that jackson self-administered the propofol. the lethal dose, that is. if that was part of their original argument, why focus now on the pills?

especially because the cause of death is sited as propofol. >> the autopsy report shows the presence of the lorazepam. the defense wants to focus on the i.v. injection. because the prosecution cannot produce the tubing that was used for the i.v. drip. they do this out of the presence of the jury. they are focusing on their case to raise reasonable doubt. >> what are people learning as we get the details about jackson himself? the man and basically learning about his habits, especially with his drug habits. >> i don't think a lot. it was one of the shadows of michael jackson, even his public and personal life. he had money problems. the child molestation problems. there was always talk of his narcotics addictions or problems also. >> it will be interesting to see what happens today when court resumes here shortly. john kelly, appreciate your time. thank you. >> always. moving on this morning, we have information leading up to where is baby lisa?

president and first lady of south korea to the white house this morning. their visit is marking a trade deal. moments ago, michelle obama and south korea's first lady arrived to a visit to a virginia high school. they will hold a state dinner at the white house for the couple. after a month back on american soil, shane bower will meet with secretary of state hillary clinton later this afternoon. meanwhile, it is no secret that secretary clinton plans to leave her role at the end of this term, but one rumor that follows her is her next post will be vice president. here's what she told savannah guthrie about that one. >> i don't even think it's in the realm of possibility. in large measure, because vice president biden has done a good job. he's taken on the burden of

dog to the roof of the car. that rocked his campaign for a week or two in 2008. now it's old news. same thing with romney care. they are trying to make a big deal out of it. it is a huge deal, but it's not news. we have known about romney care and how it inspired obama care for a long time. >> with all of that, he's still been unable to move off that 23% of favorable voters. what's really going on? we know everything we could know. everything is out. yet there's no enthusiasm in the republican party for this man. >> why are people looking over the shoulder of mitt romney seeing who is waiting to walk into the room? >> go back to rick perry. rick perry versus mitt romney. rick perry ought to be the nominee. if you look at his biography. what do you think a republican presidential candidate is? it's rick perry.

not mitt romney. romney is stiff. he's an elite and academic type. he doesn't fit with the republican party. i think that's why herman cain, one of the reasons herman cain is doing so well. i think that the reason he's not the flavor of the month is because if you look at people like donald trump and michelle bachmann, the one thing they were lacking is that likability. regardless of how you feel about his policies is incredibly likable. he's the mike huckabee of 2012. likability matters a lot >> he has the charisma and likability. herman cain doesn't want to be the latest flavor of the month. he wants to be the president. but when it comes to this, and especially for all these candidates, you want to be a lone star. not a shooting star. how do you think he can sustain what he's got going for him? and not see rick perry resurge through? >> rick perry is not going to

resurge. every time he opens his mouth, exactly what happened two nights ago keeps happening to him. >> open mouth, insert foot. >> herman cain just needs to keep talking. even if he's saying silly things, for his base, they don't care. as long as we keep paying attention to him and talking about him, he's going to continue to surge. he's likable. people are voting based on how they feel about someone. are they comfortable with this man. a lot of americans seem to be. >> if he picks that campaign song "rock me like a hurricane", i thought of it first. good to see you both this morning. president obama and his reelection team may see herman cain at the latest poll, but they are targeting mitt romney. are the president's advisors now thinking that this race is truly going to be that between him and

mitt romney? >> they haven't explicitly said so. david axelrod used to be a close advisor and top campaign advisor of the 2008 campaign. he wanted to have a conference call with reporters where you dial in and sure enough, it was about mitt romney at the end of the debate. everyone involved in his words romney flip-flopped on his position on extending the tax cuts -- i'm sorry the payroll tax cuts. now mitt romney is saying perhaps it's a bad idea. axelrod pointed that out. also his position on abortion to gun control and the current bill in congress about chinese currency. they said he's been brazen. so i think a strong indication. >> what else do you think is the administration going to look at this new poll?

>> there's bad news that the president's approval rating while hasn't sunk, it's stayed stagnant. i think we have a graphic for the next one. only 39% of those polled in our poll approve of the president's handling of the economy. then conversely on the bright side, the president is leading all per spespective challengersn you match them up. and 63% of americans approve of the president's jobs plan after you explain the particulars to them. 63%. and joe biden yesterday traveling in michigan, he pretty much summed up the way the administration has been pitched this jobs plan and how they are using it as a political weapon against republicans. let's listen. >> we're going to come back and come back and back and make them vote on every piece of this bill. let them explain to the american

people why we should depreciate jets at five years and lay off 10,000 firefighters and police officers. this is a perfect storm. when a perfect storm has reduced budgets, reduced man power, decimated neighborhoodings, and a rising crime, that's a witch's broom. that's a mixture for cancer in a city. >> a reference by vice president biden to the fact that the senate defeated the jobs plan and they are going to break it up into parts and try to pass it piece by piece. no accident that the vice president was in michigan. the president is going to detroit tomorrow. he's going to bring a wingman, the president of south korea. >> all right. thank you very much. new government estimates show home heating prices are going to be going up for most americans this winter. the department of energy is talking about exactly that now that bills could climb over $200

over last year. the average household will spend around $2,500 on heating oil. banks are moving more quickly to move homes into the foreclosure process. realty track reporting 14% increasing in first time default notices. the problem is it's taking even longer for those homes to be sold or repossessed. for that very reason, many banks are opting to tear down foreclosed homes and donate the land to local governments. that way they don't have to pay for the upkeep or the taxes. high-tech jobs are going to be taking center stage in the midwest. michigan seems to have set the example, despite a serious downturn in the jobs front. the unemployment rate in that state hit double digits in august. that's compared to the national unemployment rate of 9.1. but michigan has earned a noted distinction in the down economy. it surpasses the nation in new tech jobs. adding 2,700 tech jobs between 2009 and 2010 while the u.s.

lost just under 116,000 tech jobs last year. joining me now is kevin richards, senior vice president of affairs. things are looking up for the tech sector in the great lake states. what do the numbers tell us about the future? >> it tells us that innovation is going to lead the recovery. michigan is a skk story. washington provided some certainty around the auto bailout, but there's a sustained commitment by the private sector to invest in innovation and research and development. they rebounded in 2010 to add 2,700 jobs. so the region is really focusing on innovation. that's leading their economic recovery. >> would it be a stretch to say michigan could be on track to be a silicon valley of the midwest?

>> they are heading in that direction. they would put together a blueprint on how to be a sill can valley. they have the right mixture. the congress yesterday when they passed the free trade agreements took a giant step forward. michigan exports $2 billion a year in exports. they are eighth in the nation in consumer electronics. so i think the south korean agreement would benefit michigan. it supports about 10,000 michigan jobs. hi high-tech exports in the region. >> as we were just hearing, the white house going to detroit tomorrow with south korea's president. the state has been losing jobs during the past decade. this due to the recession and the decline in the auto industry. it's a lot of tech. so what is the resurgence mean for those other industries. especially in the motor city. >> i would say there's a multiplier effect. for every one job creates five other jobs in the economy. so when you look at the big

president obama has been challenging republicans to come out with their jobs plan. today some of them will. a group of senators led by john mccain and ron paul will introduce their alternative to the president's plan. the jobs through growth act. this bill is geared towards referring the tax code. on the house side, speaker boehner just asked the president to take up gop initiatives. >> the president has shown he doesn't understand how private-sector job growth happens. i ran a small business. i met a payroll. the fact is the president's plan, in our view, will not work as he's laid it out there.

i would tell the president and challenge the president to take yes for an answer. >> the speaker reiterated his assertion that the president is moving from governing and on to came pain mode. the issue of sexual harassment is dealt with more seriously. a number of women said after that testimony, things changed in my workplace overnight. i also know the problems still exist. >> that was anita hill talking to andria mitchell talking about her sexual harassment testimony. 20 years ago her stance changed attitudes and conduct in the american workplace. it came at a price. he motives were questioned in a public hearing and raised issued about the racial stereotypes. a new book looks at that issue.

it was written by melissa perry, who joins me now. it's nice to see you this morning to talk about the book. it does delve into the stereotyping. a lot of these are visible in popular culture. tell us about each one of these and how they played out in history. >> sure. thanks for giving me a chance to talk about the book this morning. in connection with ms. hill, the stereotypes i take a look at in the book are very old. there's three that i'm most interested in. that of the jezebel or the hyper sexual black woman. the idea that african-american women are lascivious. the second is the notion of the domestic servant or maid. and the third is the idea of the angry black woman. we might know her as sapphire in

the early 20th century. it's the idea of black women as irrationally angry or always angry. and the goal of the book is to try to think about how these stereotypes go back as far as slavery continue to impact the way black women are seen in american politics today. >> specifically with anita hill, her name got dragged through the mud for taking a stand. her character was attacked. her motive was second guessed. how did that shape history? >> so remember that when clarence thomas was nominated to the supreme court, at the moment of his confirmation, more than half of african-americans supported his confirmation. it was after he used the language of high-tech lynching. it was odd for justice thomas to use at that time.

in part because as an african-american woman, no one had ever been lynched for bad sexual practices against a black woman. anita hill as have a similar ki racial troep she could use. she couldn't say this is a high tech what -- what in history had ever been about protecting the virtue of african-american women. in that example and the example of how we talk about welfare policy and examples i use in the book how we talked about people who survived hurricane katrina as refugees rather than citizens. we see race and gender and stereo types coming together to impact how american politics treats black women. >> it's always good to see you, i appreciate your time. the book called "sister citizen" everyone can check it out. >> thanks, thomas. >> a ba jill yon dollar bill, then go to a target and buy a pack of gum and they have to
