>> reporter: that's correct. in fact, in the course of the last several weeks, coming down here and speaking to protesters, the challenge for them is being able to take the protests to the next level with specific demands. in the course of the past several weeks when you ask people what is it they want, yes, they want some type of reform, but there are specifics. part of it is to raise the profile of the movement and try to spread the fact that it is indeed not only localized to new york but countrywide, and now they're calling for global protest. they expect tomorrow for a march to take place on times square, a visible, iconic landmark in new york city. they hope as well people around the world will heed the call and join in similar protests all across the globe. >> and they're targeting times square because it is part of their anti-war protest that's blended into the movement. there's a recruitment station in times square and that's why they are there or plan to go there? >> reporter: what you're seeing
11:01 am
is a convergence of so many movements. the core of this movement, occupy wallstreet, a great deal of frustration on the economic meltdown. many are young students, people laid off on multiple occasions, people frustrated with the bailout as you mention. what they're hoping for is that people from all walks of life with the grievances we just listed will heed that call tomorrow. we understand it is going to take place ending about 5:00 p.m. in times square, but it is expected to be a march that begins from different parts of the city. we will see some people start to go from the park, others from union square, making their way to times square. >> thank you for that live report. let's bring in the campaign director for moveon.org. daniel, thanks for your time. >> thanks for having me. >> i saw you on with lawrence o'donnell. he helped pass around a petition and delivered it to the mayor, a call to keep those people at that location.
11:02 am
mission accomplished. now you have bloomberg saying the owners of the park, it is a turn of events that elected officials got involved in this. >> i think it is fair that mayor bloomberg was on the wrong side. a lot of them went with the 99% standing here and protesting to say evicting them from the park was completely unnecessary and they should be allowed to exercise -- >> there are calls from elected officials threatening and saying if you don't stop this attempt to move the people out, will make your life more difficult. there's been obviously a divide and support when you look at elected officials, a lot of republicans including those running for president critical of the movement. some democrats trying to ride the coat tails of it.
11:03 am
people insisting they don't align themselves necessarily with one side or the other. >> i think we have seen clearly that politicians of both sides have failed the 99% of people that are suffering under this economy, and you know, so they're not aligning themselves, but it is great to see elected officials and regular people standing in solidarity with the protesters against the 1% who have been benefitting from the economy that's not working for most people. >> let's talk about targeting chase bank here. you have on the website for the movement saying chase bank sacked 14,000 employees since receiving bailout of $94 billion, and they're saying that people should move their money to small banks, community banks, credit unions. this is a call of action which is what a lot of people really wanted from this movement. what can you do to be involved other than stay at this park for 29 days. so will we see more of this from people involved where they call people to action? >> well, i mean, i think people
11:04 am
down here are energized, people across the country are energized, they called for a global day of action. the chase bank is here in new york, but all across the country and across the globe, we're encouraging our members to stand in solidarity with the protests. people are going to occupy wallstreet events.com to find an occupy protest near them. it is clear why they are targeting chase bank. it is one of the giant banks that got a huge bailout from the 99% of us. we gave them our money and now they won't return our phone calls. we would be better served putting our money in small banks, community banks interested in our business and not just interested in ripping us off. >> daniel, we're almost at a month here. there is concern that eventually this will somehow come to a head. you have 15 people arrested today in denver, 15 or so in new york. the people that own this park may eventually again push to have it cleaned or have people
11:05 am
removed. how long can the protesters occupy not just this park but as i mentioned, tents were torn down in another city. when does this move from sitting in at the park maybe to a different stage of the movement? >> well, i mean, you know, as you said, there's a day of action tomorrow, but you know, i think that what we're seeing is every time that they're challenged, every time that the new york police crackdown, every time that there are arrests, the movement only grows stronger. >> but you can't stay there forever. i mean, obviously i don't think anybody would want to stay there forever, but you want your movement and your words and influence heard and felt. >> yeah. i mean, well, i think they're still figuring out exactly what the next action is, you will see one tomorrow. a huge amount of energy, people will go to the website to find occupations. how long can they stay here? they seem determined, not like they're going anywhere soon.
11:06 am
>> the last protest for a you know fell on a weekend. this is a weekday, it is a day off for a lot of people that may want to join the movement. daniel, appreciate your time. thanks a lot. >> thanks, tamron. there are developments in the republican presidential race. rick perry unveiled his economic plan hours after facing tough questions on the "today" show. and an interview with herman cain. he is the new frontrunner in the latest nbc news "the wall street journal" poll. michael walsh is live in studio. let's talk about this interview. what stood out to you most? >> he conceded that mcdonald's has a better french fry than burger king, all right? so we make some news here. what you're more interested in -- >> 999. >> i also asked about rush
11:07 am
limbaugh yesterday, having said mitt romney is not a real conservative. we have the audio what herman cain said in response. >> it is a net-net tax decrease for most families. will some families be negatively impacted? depends on their spending habits. the thing about 999 is that the government doesn't tell you how to spend your money, you decide. remember this, michael, on the sales tax, it is only imposed on new goods, not used goods, and a family that's not making a lot of money probably is not out trying to buy a lot of new stuff, and as a result they won't be impacted. >> that's actually him talking about one of the nines. me questioning him as to whether this is a regress i have form of tax because, you know, if someone of means and someone not of means buys a loaf of bread and each are hit with a 9% tax increase, it effects one more
11:08 am
than the other. a point he wasn't ready to concede. he draws a distinction between new and used goods purchased. the answer to the limbaugh romney question, he said mitt romney is not a staunch conservative and talked about how many times he changed his position on a variety of issues. >> do you find he was ready to take tougher questions on the 999? i watched several interviews and it is interesting, i believe it was a comment about a product sold in the united states with parts from another country. he said how would i know what would be taxed. is he up to snuff on his own plan? >> when i pushed on details of 999, he said to me people have these concerns and i made reference to "the washington post," grover norquist, all of whom are critical today of herman cain. he said they haven't seen the thought process of the development of 999. to which i responded why not

[ cheers and applause ] today i brought a good friend and one of our closest allies, president lee from south korea. some you may know, president lee has a remarkable story. he grew up a little ways from detroit, but he embodies that same spirit that detroit's all about. through sheer grit and determination he worked his way from the humblest beginnings. the south korea of his childhood

was an extraordinarily poor country. but he worked his way up, went to school while cleaning streets and eventually went on to run a hyundai machinery plant. so he knows about cars and the company and ultimately was elected the president of the country. it is one of the best economic come backs we've ever seen. so president lee knows what it is like to go through tough times. he knows what it is like when folks have counted you out and he knows what it is like to make a big come back. so with that, i want to welcome president lee to detroit and have him say just a few words. [ cheers and applause ]
11:12 am
>> kristin, are you there? >> i am there. how are you? >> we see president lee now addressing the group there. but we understand the white house is really quite proud of this event in this location for obvious reasons. the president wanting to show the success of the turnaround with parts of the auto industry, and some of the i guess the fact that they were able to resuscitate the auto market and help detroit in a much needed way there. >> that's right, tamron. you heard the president start off by talking about the free trade agreements, but the other big issue today is the auto bailout. of course, it was quite controversial while it was going on, but president obama now making the case that because of the bailout, gm, chrysler were

the country illegally. those figures were to be reported to the state. even though this did not bar the children of illegal immigrants from going to school, many parents feared it would turn out to be a way to track them and be deported, so they took the children out of school. they also made it a crime to fail to carry immigration documents. obama administration says they govern it so states aren't free to impose their own laws. the courts declined to block another contested part of the law, a requirement police detain anybody they suspect being in the country illegally. arizona's tough immigration law contains a similar requirement. it has been blocked by the courts while the alabama provision has so far survived two court challenges. so to get to your question about the supreme court, the alabama law is now pending before the supreme court. we're waiting to see if the court will take that case. if it does, the answer to
