president obama is using his campaign-style bus tour to take jabs at republicans standing in the way of his jobs proposals. not surprisingly, the gop is firing back. for more on that we go to nbc's tracie potts in washington for us. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. some of that criticism is about his jobs plan. some of it is about this campaign-style bus tour. the buses alone cost over $2 million. republicans are questioning whether that's a good use of taxpayer money. president obama visits a community college in north carolina and a virginia high school today. >> pass this bill. we need to pass this bill. >> reporter: he's pitching $35 billion to save nearly 300,000 jobs, teachers, police, firefighters, first responders, part of his bigger jobs bill the senate rejected. >> we're going to break up my jobs bill. maybe they just couldn't understand the whole thing at

once. >> reporter: republicans are livid about this campaign-style tour. >> he's traveling around on a canadian bus, touting american jobs. is that appropriate on the taxpayers' dime since it is clearly campaigning? >> if we're not playing politics and if we're not focused on the election 13 months from now, but we're focused on what can help the economy right now. >> reporter: analysts say it's no coincidence he's traveling through two battleground states. >> his real challenge, though s winning back those moderate swing voters in north carolina and virginia. >> reporter: but will this tour through the south make a difference in washington? >> this thing boils down to a handful of people making a decision behind closed doors, which has nothing to do with the masses of folks that you're in front of at the moment. >> reporter: we'll likely hear more about that tonight at the republican candidate's debate. jon huntsman won't be there. he's holding a town hall instead in new hampshire. he's boycotting the debate because nevada moved its caucuses ahead of new hampshire's primary. ach a sobew

estimates 7 billion people will be sharing the earth's land and resources as of october 31st. the agency says sub-saharan african nations with the world's highest birth rates continue to drive that number upward. that's despite family size decreases in china and also slowing birth rates in india. still, india is expected to overtake china as the most populous nation by 2030 with an estimated 1.6 billion people. here's your "first look" at some of the other stories going on around america today. a jaw-dropping moment was all caught on tape after a drunken father had his 9-year-old daughter drive him to a michigan gas station. the visibly intoxicated father even boasted about his daughter's driving ability to an attendant before they left to return home. a 911 call led police to the vehicle where they arrested the father on child abuse charges. adventurous billionaire

richard branson celebrated the dedication of the world's first space port by splashing a little bubbly as he dangled above spectators. commercial space flights from the virgin galactic gateway to space are expected to begin after testing runs are complete in late 2012. high-speed winds churned up a reminder of the dust bowl days in the lone star state. the massive dust storm rolled through lubbock, reducing visibility to zero in some parts and causing property damage. elsewhere, a blast of winter hit parts of colorado leaving approximately eight inches of snow on the ground. weather forecasters believe this is just the first stage of the storm and actually expect it to intensify before dropping off. and finally, salem police were recently called into break up a small fray between zombies and witches. only in salem. the feud stems from a battle brewing between two competing haunted houses in the same strip mall.

and now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the forecast. team zombie or team witch? >> team zombie. >> but that's their territory, the witches. >> that's true. i'll give you that. it's a great place for halloween if you've never been there, thousands of people -- it's a mob house, but it's a lot of fun. good morning. here's what we're looking at outside. tropical disturbance off the coast of florida. that's where heavy rain will continue during the day today. all this mess will head up the east coast. it's mixing with another storm system coming through arkansas now. here's what we're dealing with now, all of this green is rain. a lot of it has been light overnight it will continue to move northwards and intensify. here is that storm system in the middle of the country kicking through kansas city. this has a strong cold front with it, too.

we had record highs in areas like atlanta. once this storm system goes by you, that cold system will cool you off. dallas much cooler today than yesterday. almost all of the lone star state that's the case. this kicks to the east coast, picks up this mess in the south and that will leave us with wet weather. as far as the radar goes, st. louis you had heavy rain overnight, now it's a light rain. chicago, you look okay and dry now. you could get a few sprinkles later on today. not a lot of wet weather there. tennessee, you are about to get some thunderstorms. not a lot of bad weather with this, maybe a rumble or two. in memphis, we have showers and downpours. shreveport, headed along interstate 10, we will see wet weather. you do not need the umbrella today from d.c. northwards. you're dry today. tomorrow is when you get your rain. the southeast, eventually atlanta will get thunderstorms, especially this afternoon.

all of the southeast will have a chance for downpours. by the time we get to wednesday, all of that mess heads up the coast. two storms combine. not only will it be rainy but windy, too that's the recipe for big-time air traffic delays from d.c. northwards to the big city. wednesday is the day. if you don't have to travel on wednesday and can avoid it, wait until thursday or towards the weekend. middle of the country, i mentioned dallas cools off, wednesday highs in the 70s. we're in this weather pattern where it rains on the east coast middle of the week, then the weekend clears out and it's beautiful that will happen again. >> all right. we like that. europe sinks stocks again, a blackberry peace offering, and the app that nailed a cheating wife. your "first look" at the business headlines is straight ahead. coming up, a pro bowl wide receiver is traded, the jets get a lift and a victory 15 years in the making.

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. here's some of the top stories making news this morning. according to a new gallup poll, a record high of 50% of americans now support legalizing marijuana use. that's up from 46% last year. support is highest among liberals and adults under 30. texas law enforcement officials say several mexican drug cartels are luring american children as young as 11 to work in their smuggling operations. a texas public official says the gangs have named these children the expendables. the lapd is red-faced after announcing 30 guns have been stolen from a s.w.a.t. training center. officials admit the training weapons, include 21 submachine guns can be converted back to lethal use. and according to nbc affiliate wwbt in richmond,

virginia, a truck filled with $200,000 worth of equipment for the president, including his podium, was stolen ahead of a campaign-style stop in virginia. the vehicle was later recovered. it's not clear if anything was taken but officials say no classified information was inside. according to a new poll, anti-wall street protests have won broad support among new york city voters. the survey found that 67% agree with the occupy wall street demonstrations. last night on the "rachel maddow show" barney frank weighed in with his thoughts on the movement. >> it is the prerequisite, i hope, for people getting together and voting and engaging things. and i understand some of the people that occupy wall street are kind of critical about it. they think that's conventional politics. well, you know the most successful organization in

here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,397 after dropping 247 points yesterday. the s&p was down 23 points. the nasdaq fell 52. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei dipped 137 points, while in hong kong, the hang seng plunged 797. when european leaders promised to solve the region's debt crisis in less than a month, it sounded too good to be true. and it turns out it was. the painful reality is that the broad rescue plan will not come this week and will likely take a while longer hit markets hard yesterday. lackluster earnings also helped stock see their worst day in two weeks. the fallout could continue today after a rare revenue miss from ibm, which dragged its shares lower in late trade. after the bell, analyst expect apple's earnings to shine on news it sold more than 4 million new iphones in three days.

wells fargo lost 8% after its first disappointing report in two years. traders sold off citigroup despite its impressive report. a prominent analyst brewed up trouble for green mountain coffee calling the stock overhyped. shares fell 10%. kinder morgan's $21 million el paso energy buyout sent both companies higher. el paso gained 24%. american airlines' failure to strike a new deal with its pilots sent its shares skidding 6%. retailer lowe's is closing 20 weakest stores, cutting 20,000 jobs. a troubling report shows five of six top credit card issuers say late payments are on the rise. blackberry maker research in motion is offer ing $100 in free apps as a peace offering for last week's outage has gotten a mostly sour reception.

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. after three ugly road losses and rumors of team friction, last night home-cooked dolphin is just what the new york jets needed. here's nbc's fred roggin. good morning. the new york jets desperately needed a win and the dolphins were up to the task. the dolphins have not won all year and it wasn't going to happen last night. matt moore looking for brandon marshall but instead he found darrelle revis, first of two interceptions.

revis took it up the middle, end zone to end zone, 100-yard pick six. that touchdown tied a franchise record. jets' defense allowed two field goals all night. new york was up 14-6 at the half. we'll move to the fourth and mark sanchez feeling the pressure. slings it out to santonio holmes, picked up a block and cruised 38 yards down the sideline. jets running away with it, up 24-6. so, you think it's easy being an nfl official? when was the last time had you a 230-pounder run over you at work? shawn greene took out referee fred brian. fortunately, he popped right back up and he was chuckle being it afterwards. the jets win a laugher 4-6. one last nfl note. broncos traded brandon lloyd to the rams for a sixth round pick. lloyd expected to play sunday against the cowboys. the nfl trade deadline, today. hockey, the winnipeg jets picked up their first franchise win and kyle wellwood gave the fans reasons to cheer.

just eight seconds into the game, that goal nearly blew the roof off the building. after a 15-year absence, the winnipeg jets get their first win, 2-1. to tampa bay, florida bragging rights on the line between panthers and lightning. chris versteg scored his first goal of the game to give the panthers a 5-3 lead. they won 7-4. finally, the avalanche are the surprise team of the young season, picked up another win with an overtime win over the maple leafs. david jones corralled the rebound and scored the game-winner. colorado a perfect 5-0 on the road after a 3-2 win. that's your "first look" at sports, i'm fred roggin. now for another look at the weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. one more beautiful day for many of us in new england and the mid-atlantic, before the rain moves in on wednesday. it's going to be a mild day, too. starting to look at the calendar, you realize that you won't have many more of these thailand mornings out there. temperatures in the 50s in most

nazi germany, he said he was registered against his will in the hitler youth and had no choice but to serve in german infantry. sarandon has drawn heavy condemnation from catholic groups and the anti-defamation league. elsewhere, steven segal is now an official texas border sheriff. that's right. the post has nothing to do with the reality show "steven segal law man." apparently for a long time christina aguilera seen here last weekend at michael jackson tribute has been taking shots at kelly osbourne over her weight. now that osbourne has slimmed down, she's dishing it back saying about aguilera, quote, she called me fat for years. i was never that fat. come on, ladies that just sets a bad example for girls. >> neither are.
