"fi. desperate dig. rescuers continue to search for survivors of turkey's deadly quake. garbage deluge. a massive island of trash and debris from the japanese tsunami heads towards the u.s. and hot ticket. italy's mt. etna puts on a spectacular nighttime show. good morning, i'm lynn berry, those stories and more are straight ahead this is "first look" on msnbc. we begin this morning with a race against time. rescue crews in turkey are

franticly searching for any signs of life. officials say at least 366 people were killed and 1300 were injured in the quake-prone region. nbc's michelle franzen reports. >> reporter: a young man pulled from the rubble, more than 30 hours after being buried alive. a toddler freed from a cage of mangled steel and concrete and carried to safety. rare survival stories giving home to this devastated town, scores of building were simply flattened in an instant. no one knows just how many people might still be alive trapped in the rubble. rescue workers are racing against the clock to reach survivors in time, clearing debris with heavy equipment, shovels and by hand. the grief here is overwhelming. families have begun making funeral arrangements for loved ones and the full scope of the disaster is not yet known.

turkey's prime minister sent troops to the region and came in person to see the damage and comfort the victims in this largely kurdish part of the country. people here say they just need more help to save those trapped. >> that was nbc's michelle franzen reporting from turkey. back at home, facing gridlock on his jobs plan in washington, president obama has launched a new economic and political plan to jump start the stalled economy. starting with folks in over their heads in the nation's m t mortgage mess but critics say his we can't wait is too little too late. steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: president obama went to las vegas, ground zero of the housing crisis to unveil his new refi plan. it's for homeowners who pay their mortgages every month but still owe more than their home is worth.

now if their mortgage is with fannie mae or freddie mac, they can refinance. >> it gets those families spending again and makes it easier for them to make mortgage payments. >> reporter: mr. obama is ordering the change to get around republicans. >> we can't wait for an increasingly dysfunctional congress to do its job. where they won't act, i will. >> reporter: but 6 million homeowners have fallen behind in their mortgage, like joanne woolridge of arizona, stuck with a 7% note and upside down. >> i got this house for 345, now according to the tax records it's 157. >> reporter: she gets no help today. >> it's a tweak to an existing program that wasn't working. some have called it a single when they needed a home run. >> reporter: the president spent 2.4 billion of the 50 billion he pledged on housing, because as the housing secretary said, the problem was worth than they

thought. >> it also made it harder to unwind these troubled mortgages. >> reporter: now barack obama is running for re-election, still looking for ways to fix the mortgage mess. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. last night on politics nation, congresswoma democrat fs told reverend al sharpton about how she feels to opposition to the president's new mortgage assistance plan, particularly after mitt romney told a las vegas newsmaker that the foreclosure crisis should be allowed to run its course and hit the bottom. >> totally unacceptable. we have neighborhoods and in cities, and even states that are so far under water, where people are losing their homes. where the government -- what i appreciate about the president is he is saying we are not helpless in the face of this. i will use all my power to make sure homeowners who have little or no equity in their homes are going to be able to stay there

what is mitt romney suggesting? that the people by the millions, literally tens of millions, be thrown out of their homes without the government doing anything to help? they are such hypocrites, al. they talk about how the stimulus doesn't work and we're not going to do anything to create jobs. yet i see one after another of them grinning when they cut the ribbon for projects that are in their district. it just gals me. >> catch the reverend al sharpton and his take on the top stories, don't miss "politics nation" weekdays at 6:00 p.m. eastern on msnbc. here's your "first look" at some of the other news going on around america. putting out a texas oil leak blaze will be a week-long job it threatened millions in damage and clean-up costs.

crews have contained the fire. in upstate new york, 55 people were forced to run for their lives after their tour bus burst into flames. passengers say it was only a matter of minutes before the atlantic city-bound bus was engulfed. the bus driver and tour guide were called life saver force getting people off the bus. history continues to be made at cape canaveral, even after the retirement of the space shuttle. space x unveiled the dragon, expe expected to be the first privately owned spacecraft to dock at the international space station. its first mission will be to carry supplies to the space station crew on december 19th. and finally reporters in an upstate new york newspaper office wound up on the other side of the story when a deer charged into their newsroom. he doesn't look happy. the young buck tour up the managing editor's office before escaping through a window. now for a look at our national

weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. that's just like our editorial meetings. all fired up, that's got to be in the show. >> i thought you meant you were going to jump out the window. >> oh, come on, be a team player. >> you mean from the guy who doesn't go to the meetings? >> that's true. >> good morning. we are dealing with a hurricane in the caribbean. yesterday it was a tropical storm. this is the warmest waters almost anywhere in the world as far as, you know, the ocean heat content goes. and these hurricanes love this spot in the western caribbean this is where wilma fired up in october about four, five years ago. this storm is just in the very perfect spot right now to get very intense in a hurry. it's all the way up now to a category 2 hurricane. you can see where south florida is here. here's cuba and cancun. when a storm gets in this location, it has to hit somewhere. it can't escape and go out to

sea. they usually don't weaken too much in this area of the world. someone will get some devastation from this storm. unfortunately it looks now that most likely it will be up near cancun, northern portions of belize may get clipped, too. the hurricane center does think it should be near there as a category 2, then weaken on friday, early in the morning, to a category 1. the good news for cancun t will probably be a category 3 hurricane as we go throughout the next couple of days, weaken down to a 2 and then a category 1 hopefully by the time we get to that period. then only a tropical storm for western cuba. we have not ruled out the storm heading for south florida. the forecast today looks better for south florida than it did yesterday at this time. now only one of the computers out of the six reliable ones takes it to south florida the rest of it bring it towards

cancun and weaken it over western cuba. the other weather story out there that's fascinating to watch tonight and tomorrow is in denver, colorado. all of the front range. you can already see some precipitation here. there's rain today, snow tonight into tomorrow, possibility of 6 to 12 inches. for you skiers out there, this is the first real storm you'll have. a lot of resorts will be opening early. today, lynn 55 in denver, yesterday 85 and sunny. >> i'll either surf or ski. thank you very much. stocks fly on wall street wheeling and dealing. one place where you can always get a mcrib sandwich any time you want. your "first look" at the business headlines is straight ahead. coming up, a ranger rally and the jaguars put their best foot forward. you're watching "first look." progresso. it fits!

look," i'm lynn berry. here's some of the top stories making news this morning. reports say the body of ousted libyan leader moammar gadhafi has been buried at an unknown location. this after officials said he would be buried in a secret desert grave. meanwhile, the head of the transitional government reassured western powers the country will be run by moderate muslims. republican presidential candidate rick perry is proposing a tax overhaul that would slash corporate rates and give individuals the option of paying a 20% flat tax on their income. a federal judge in florida is temporarily blocking a new state law requiring welfare recipients to pass a drug test before receiving benefits. the judge says the law may violate the constitution's ban on unreasonable search and seizure. scientists say this year's devastating tsunami in japan has created giant fields of floating debris in the pacific ocean that could hit u.s. shores by 2014. u.s. navy vessels have had to steer around the garbage.

europe's biggest and most active volcano, mt. etna, has erupted for the 17th time this year, spewing bright orange lava hundreds of feet into the air. now here's your "first look" at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,913 after adding 104 points yesterday. the s&p gained 15 points, the nasdaq jumped 61. looking at overseas trading, in tokyo the nikkei dipped 81 points, but in hong kong, the hang seng was up 196. stocks rose monday on strong earnings, a handful of mergers and hope a solution is on the way in europe. monday gains put the s&p 500 on track for its best month in almost 20 years. the nasdaq's spike turned that index positive for the year. caterpillar led stocks higher after reporting a far better than expected surge in profits on record revenue, thanks to

strong growth in exports. a flurry of corporate deals powered stocks higher. cigna is acquiring health insurer health spring for $3.8 billion. oracle is buying right now technologies for $1.5 billion. mattel is purchasing hit entertainment, owner of thomas and friends and barney for $680 million. and j.m. smucker bought most of sarah lee's north american coffee operations for $350 million. in other earnings, texas instruments slid after hours after saying economic uncertainty would hurt fourth quarter results in almost every major market segment. when will the bleeding stop for netflix? shares plunged over 20% after hours on its forecast of a sharp drop in fourth quarter profits. netflix lost over 800,000 subscribers in the third quarter alone. since july, when a price hike and a dvd by mail split-off, triggered a subscriber revolt,

vintage beltre homer put everything into that one. rangers tied it 2-2. then the cards' bullpen fell apart. sacks full in the eighth, napoli doubled into the gap. in came a pair. rangers grab their first lead, 4-2. last chance for the cards, one on, albert pujols at the place. neftali feliz struck him out and napoli got allen craig trying to steal second. rangers won 4-2 leading the series three games to two. nfl, the jags' scobey put the foot in football in a 54 and 5 1-yard field goal and another 54-yarder against the ravens. not the prettiest game but jacksonville will take it, winning 12-7. hockey, flyers jaromir jagr may be 39 but looked like a rookie last night. scored his first goal of the season against the maple leafs. there's his trademark salute. we've not seen that in a while. in the third, he did it again, second of the night. after playing three years in russia, jagr playing like he never left. flyers won it 4-2. now to winnipeg, and that's
