their families, sandusky denied all child sex abuse charges but did admit to inappropriate conduct. >> i have horsed around with kids. i have showered after workouts.ç i have hugged them and i have touched their leg, without intent of sexual contact. >> joined now by nbc's reporter. a second e-mail to discuss, this one from the coach who was widely criticized for not doing enough. mike mcqueary said in this e-mail he did go to the police. what is this going to mean for the case now? >> reporter: well, everyone is wondering that right now. i do have a call in to the attorney general's office to ask them to address this because the problem is, in the grand jury presentment, they indicate that mcqueary just simply left the locker room after witnessing the attack and no one from the university contacted police. but in this e-mail that mcqueary sent to his friends, he states,
7:01 am
i did stop it, not physically, but made sure it was stopped when i left that locker room, i did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police, no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30 to 45 seconds, trust me. now, for the first time, mike mcqueary also discussed his emotions in a very brief exchange with cbs news yesterday. >> just shaken. >> crist? >> crazy. >> you said, what? >> like a snowglobe. >> reporter: now as this investigation continues, we're going to try and get answers from the attorney general's office and from the local police who i've also got calls in to to seeç whether or not they have records of whether mcqueary came to them after the alleged
7:02 am
attack. in addition, pennsylvania senator bob casey is calling for a federal congressional investigation into this. what this could mean in the long run is if these investigations prove wrongdoing on the university's part, they could be at risk of losing federal funding. >> thank you very much. coming up at 11:00, delaware attorney general beau biden who aggressively and successfully prosecuted a pediatrician convicted of sexual conduct with dozens of children will weigh in on the situation at penn state. the next not mitt romney to surge in the polls is newt gingrich. he's right on mitt romney's heels. he's important in early state iowa but is being dogged by a report that he earned $1.6 million consulting for mortgage giant freddie mac. but does newt have too much baggage to win in the end?
7:03 am
let's bring in our company, david korn and josh kroshir. david, i want to play you the sound that came in a few minutes ago on newt gingrich. listen to this. >> first of all, it wasn't paid to me. gingrich group was a consulting firm that had lots of people doing things. and we offered strategic advice. >> is the $1.6 million figure correct? >> i don't know. we're going back to check.ç >> the issue of whether he lobbied or consulted and if he made $300,000 or $1.6 million. is this going to hurt him either way? >> yes. we now know where we got the money from tiffany's at least. the big question is whether or not he is fibbing. when asked about this at the debate, he said he was hired as
7:04 am
a historian. i spoke with someone from freddie mac afterwards who laughed and laughed and laughed. i said, why did you hire him? they said, he was the ex-speaker of the house and at the time freddie mac was collecting politicians on the right, on the left, democrats and republicans. he gave strategic advice, who did he give it to? to the lobbyists of freddie mac. for him to go out there and attack freddie mac and fannie mae and say that barney frank should go to jail because of supporting freddie mac and not overseeing enough is ludicrous. his story doesn't hold up. but more important, he's just wrong, flip-flopping and this is not a sustainable position for him. >> so that's the freshest issue right now with newt gingrich. then we take a look at his professional life. he was speaker when the government shut down. and then the ad that you both remember -- >> we don't always see eye to eye, do we, newt? >> no. but we do agree, our country must take action to address
7:05 am
climate change. >> so, josh, that ad he calls just about the stupidest thing he's ever done. with newt, is there a treasure trove of baggage to be recycled there? >> there's lots of baggage. he's been trying to portray himself as an outsider, someone who'sç been out of mrikt polits for a long time. but he has as much washington baggage almost more than any other republican presidential candidate on the stage. you really have two tracks in the republican primary field. you have the establishment track, mitt romney's done well in that category. and gingrich has surged among the tea party types of leaders. but the tea party voters don't like the kind of connection between government and politics, which gingrich is now -- has quite a share of his own connections to. they certainly don't like nancy pelosi who's the boogeywoman in
7:06 am
many ways of democratic liberalism. the more scrutiny he draws, i think you'll see the numbers with the tea party supporters start to go down. >> richard, newt gingrich has about 17 different organizations, part of newt, inc. he talked about how one was paid for strategic advice. there are a lot of them. they've worked for corporations and nonprofits and others. so there is a treasure trove of interconnecting relationships and deals to sort through as well as 30 years of hyperrhetoric, often mean and very nasty from newt gingrich directed mainly at democrats and often sometimes at republicans. so you talk about baggage. he has more baggage than a 747. i don't see how once people start looking that he'll be able to do anything except address what the old newt did once upon
7:07 am
a time. >> let's talk about that, josh.ç when he did excoriate, did call out paul ryan who wanted to turn medicare into a voucher program, is he going to be able to get the support of republicans in congress? >> the big issue is how primary voters view him. his complain almost collapsed when he criticized paul ryan's entitlement reform plan. you better believe that every one of his opponents, including mitt romney, has footage of that is and going to be using some of that if newt gingrich continues to hold and continues his surge as a frontrunner in the primary. so this isn't just about newt gingrich's baggage with the overall electorate. a lot of conservatives don't support him. he has a lot of convincing to do. he hasn't gotten a lot of scrutiny over the last several months but he will be in the next few months. >> we have to go. thank you both. a lot to talk about with newt gingrich.
7:08 am
>> a lot. time is running out for the debt super committee, hoping to come up with some kind of agreement by november 23rd. i'll talk with congressman emmanuel cleaver in about ten minutes. it could be a major turning point for the occupy protests. some are asking if the tent city in zuccotti park, now gone, is the start of that. others argue the occupy wall street movement is even stronger and that the eviction may be good for the cause. >> i think could have used a little cleaning up perhaps. there may be a little bit of a bad element that's here. but i think generally the reason why they're here is a good reason. >> our twoç colu-- nicholas chh joins us. you sweeted, could bloomberg be a secret occupy wall streeter? he seems to have just revived the movement. what do you mean? >> well, i think the movement is
7:09 am
facing real challenges in the form of winter weather, rain, snow, and the fact that they were antagonizing some people in downtown manhattan and also creating concerns among a lot of people about noise, about drugs, about security. and at each point in the occupy movement's brief history, it has been bolstered by the police pepper spraying young women, by the police trying to move them out. i think bloomberg yesterday gave them a real shot in the arm by the effort to push them out first at zuccotti park and then later at the square. >> you've seen other discussions who are saying there's a collusion going on between mayors, perhaps others in the government that are trying to get them out. is this possibly the beginning of the end for them, is what they're asking? >> well, the high ground for the occupy wall streeters is not a little piece of turf.
7:10 am
it's really the issue of income inequality. that's what's resonates. i hope that they will use their energy and their resources not to fight to make a little bit of progress territorially but to push an issue under the national agenda. >> you believe this is energizing them. perhaps one point of that, we take you to berkeley, california, there, more than 1,000 protesters marched. they heldç a -- some sit-ins, they pitched tents in defiance of campus officials there. here's what robert reich said about the movement. >> instead of allowing people to peaceably assemble to express their outrage, we've got mayors and other officials all over the country who are saying, you can't assemble, you can't express yourself, but we are going to listen to the money from the big corporations.
7:11 am
>> so when you look at berkeley and what's happening there right now, we think of the '60s and activism, the populism we're seeing with the occupy wall street movement and also the tea party, what's your sense about where we're going with this? >> well, i think it's really hard to be sure. and i think the winter frankly is going to be a problem. but the issue of income inequality has been a dead space for many reasons in america. now that is on the agenda. one of the issues, as you know as well as i, is that we in the news media tend to cover issues that we have been covering. there tends to be a certain inertia about issue. my hope, i guess, is that the movement not only in zuccotti park, but nationally, has put that issue on the agenda. and those of us in the news media will do our part to keep it there during an election year. >> nick, appreciate your time. president obama signed a new security agreement with
7:12 am
australia that would increase u.s. military presence in next several years. it's seen as a direct response to china's growing influence. president obama tried his hand at a little australian. >> when julie and iç meet, we listen to each other, we learn from each other. it's not just a lot of ear-bashing. that's a good one, ear-bashing. i can use that in washington. because there's a lot of ear-bashing sometimes. >> president obama has a jam-packed schedule ahead of him. he's expected to speak to the u.s. and australian troops before leaving for indonesia for a regional meeting. he's scheduled to be back home on sunday. president herman cain wanted henry kissinger to be his secretary of state. the two met earlier this month and in an interview on tuesday, cain says here that kissinger declined his offer. it wasn't clear if he was joking, though. >> dr. kissinger has declined, and i respect that. i appreciate that he was kind enough to give me his perspective on middle east and a lot of these other countries around the world. so he was like a wise sage giving me a lot of perspective about how to go about -- >> new jersey governor chris christie saying math and science teachers should be paid more than gym teachers saying, quote, you have to pay them more than we pay the gym teacher, i'm sorry, in today's society, they're more valuable. and a quinnipiac poll shows his approval rating is at 56%. congress wants pizza to stay

7:18 am
>> we have come forth, frankly, with a very good faith offer of putting some tax revenue on the table, but only if we do it in a pro-growth fashion to broaden the base, bring down rates, which is what every other bipartisan effort has done. >> i'm joined by congressman emmanuel cleaver. >> good to be with you. >> he also said his plan puts $250 billion in new tax revenue on the table. for democrats, seems like that's a win? >> well, it depends on how we're receiving the revenue, how we're generating the revenue. i don't know whether they're moving the marginal tax code, whether they are trying to cut back on some of the bush tax cuts. as you know, it's a very secretive committee. and we don't get a lot of detail. believe it or not, members of
7:19 am
congress can be confidential. >> congressman, how do you feel about that? you do have the super committee of 12. what sort of conversations have you had with any of the members and you feel like you're left out of this? >> i don't think any of us are getting much information from the super committee, including the minorityç leader, pelosi. i think that's the way it was designed. keep in mind, i'm one of about 50 members who signed a letter disagreeing with the establishment of the super committee. and i voted against that deal for this very reason because we have 435 members of the house, another 100 in the senate. and it means that our constituents, if we're not on the super committee, are being left out. and when the legislation comes to the floor, hopefully something will come to the floor, remember, we cannot amend it and there will be no debate on it. >> you still believe that this super committee is too super? you still would not support such
7:20 am
an idea going forward? >> well, the constitution decided the number of members so that we would be a body of people representing the same number of constituents. and now we have 12 people who actually have more power than the rest of us. but that aside, i joined with 99 other members of the house, 50 republicans, 50 democrats who called a press conference a week ago and said that we were urging the super committee to come up with the big deal. now i think we're going toward the sunset. it doesn't look good at this point. i hope something can come. >> i have to quote you here, though, congressman. during the deal, you were very often quoted because you called the deal for the debt ceiling, to raise the debt ceiling, a sugar-coated satan sandwich. >> yes. >> so many folks said that is the way many democrats felt about it. how would you describe what we've got today now?
7:21 am
>> well, we pulled the bun back and now we can see what was in the sandwich. i don't think it's veryç excising. when you look at the fact that probably 90% of the people watching your broadcast have no say in what's going on in the super committee. but the other side of it is that at first, i think many of us were hoping for the best. now we're just hoping to avoid the worst because the worst will be $600 billion on defense and $600 billion on domestic spending and that is not a good way to run general motors. it means we're having blind cuts that could decimate certain very valuable programs in this country. >> congressman cleaver, thank you very much for your time. what happened at the white house when secret service discovered it was hit by bullets? details next.

7:37 am
concerned going forward? >> he'sç doing pretty well in w jersey. if he wasn't doing well in those head-to-head match-ups, that would be a serious problem for him and the democratic party. new jersey's been a reliably democratic state over the past few presidential election cycles. a couple of other reliably blue states to keep an eye on, the states of pennsylvania and michigan. democrats need to hold on to those. you're going to see republicans trying to make inroads. obama and the democrats are doing fine in new jersey. but watch out for pennsylvania and michigan. >> chris christie also in that poll, not running for president but his approval rating high in the state where he slashed a lot of programs. what do you think here? any indications what kind of impact he might have on the presidential race? >> he's certainly going to be in the veep stakes. one thing worth noting, the approval ratings have him well above 50%, it certainly didn't
7:38 am
hurt him with all that presidential speculation from several weeks ago, boosted his standing probably with a lot of independent voters in that state. so it's never a bad thing to have people want you to take a job, even if you don't take it or run for it. >> let's go to new hampshire, a new bloomberg poll showing mitt romney ahead of the president by ten points. >> this is a significant development. new hampshire doesn't have a lot of electoral votes. but this is a state that barack obama carried by almost ten percentage points in 2008. now mitt romney is ahead of him 10 points. it's still very early. one thing potentially benefiting him there is it borders massachusetts. of course, that is theç state that mitt romney governed, was governor from 2003 to 2007. that could be helping him there. but every electoral vote matters, richard. if you end up chalking new hampshire to the republican column, that means that democrats and president obama are going to have to get

>> got a whole network this time, though, right? >> it's not as oufl powerful as was when it came out. >> he's addressed that voter bloc? >> and we're sure where he stands on roe versus wade. >> mitt romney sometimes is very roeç v. wade and sometimes not >> that's a different discussion. what's your thought? of the field, which do women prefer most? who's he going to do best with? >> women, like men, believe that mitt romney will be the best candidate of the gop field. and the reason for that is because he has experience on the economy and that's what most people care about. men, women, children, elderly, all they care about is jobs and the economy going better. and mitt romney is the one who's going to deliver that when he's president. >> let's talk about the tea party.
7:41 am
newt gingrich, looks like the tea party is pushing him forward -- >> they just don't like mitt romney. >> non-mitt romney candidate. >> i think right now, newt's troubles are behind him. >> so newt's trending up. but a lot of candidates have. michele bachmann, herman cain -- >> who are they going to hang on to, though? >> they're going to hang on to mitt romney when mitt romney's the nominee. >> they're going to hold their nose and hang on to him. >> it doesn't matter what they're holding when they pull the lever in the ballot box for mitt romney. the republican party is always good at coalescing around the nomin nominee, unlike the democrat party who stays fragmented. >> there's the other third category of voters, at least in the last election, went for obama. that's young people, 2 to 1 is the statistic. but are they still going to be as satisfied, as excited as they were in 2008, boris? >> absolutely not. they're not, again, jobs have not been delivered. that's what young people care
7:42 am
about. they're called the generation jobless. "the wall street journal" writes about it. there are people coming out of college with big debt and don't have a job to leanç on. and hope and change does not feed you when you don't have a job. >> we've seen with the polls that the young people are still strongly behind this president and he hasn't started his social media campaign which was so effective -- >> will they go and volunteer -- will they be there on the ground? >> there is a strong, strong movement in this country right now. i think this president could tap into it more so than anybody on the republican side. no one on the republican side could tap into it -- >> that's incorrect. the youth at occupy wall street are disappointed with this president because he hasn't delivered. >> but he can capitalize on it and the republicans can not. >> are all three groups important or is one more important than the other? >> all three are important and all three might break for the republicans if this country keeps going the way it's going over the next year. >> thank you so much.

the archbishop of new york said basically this is the neutering of religion. can you describe what the concern is here? >> sure. i see this very differently. the catholics that i work every day with are concerned about the moral scandal of poverty, growing income inequality. what's striking to me and a lot of catholics in our pews, bishops have just met for a national meeting and not talked about poverty at all. income inequality was not on the agenda. while religious liberty is an important issue and it's a bedrock value of our country and we need to protect it, i'm puzzled and i think a lot of catholics in the pews are puzzled the bishops would choose to launch this front at a time when 1 in 6 children live in poverty and we're dealing with income inequality that's the worst it's been in years. >> you're thinking in line with what we've seen all across the country? >> exactly. the vatican just came out with a very powerful document last week talking about the need for more

reagan administration's theories of trickle-down economics. we'd like to see our bishops speaking more robustly on these issues. >> on the issues -- going back to income inequality, the issues, for instance, of stopping human trafficking and other items at that level. so religious liberty, what is it that the church wants right now? what is this push? >> well, i think there are some tensions between the government and religious institutions where you have an example of a grant that was denied to the bishops conference around human trafficking. the conference has worked for years on helping victims of sexual trafficking. but they will not refer these victims to contraception or reproductive services. you have a clash there. but i would like to point out, i think the key point, there can be substantial policy differences and there are. but i think it's a mistake to cast this in terms of religious bigotry or anti-catholic bias. that's going a step way too far. the obama administration has been a good partner to catholic organizations.
