tv Lockup Holman MSNBC November 24, 2011 11:00am-12:00pm PST
11:00 am
>> america's prisons, dangerous, often deadly. there two million people doing time. every day is a battle to survive and to maintain order. >> down on your feet! down! >> located in the deep south, holman correctional facility where most are serving life sentences. we spent months documenting life on the inside where the prisoners have nothing but time and nothing to lose. this is lockup, holman, extended stay.
11:01 am
>> holman correctional facility is say maximum security prison. with the officers out numbered 10-1. in an environment that sometimes breeds violence, inmates are constantly making weapons for protection. >> i keep knives. i always heard it was better to be caught with one than without one in prison. >> the officers must do anything they can to curb future attacks. >> keep your hands down. >> this is a secure level five and it went to security level six.
11:02 am
>> last year we had four major incidents that happened. that would be a stabbing type of a situation where it was very serious or life-threatening. over the last four or five years we averaged 3 1/2 to four of those events each year. for this type of facility, that's very good. >> in this type of facility, many of the inmates are armed to the teeth. >> they always think everyone needs a weapon. they take the smallest pieces of metal and make a real good weapon off of it. it doesn't have to be big. even the smallest item is dangerous. this is a small piece of wire from a chain link fence. this is the most popular weapon called a prison-made box cutter. it's a razor blade glued between two pieces of wood. sharp and easy to conceal.
11:03 am
it's the weapon of choice at this institution. this looks like they were trying to make a set of nun chucks. they find them anywhere and everywhere to hide them. you may pass an inmate walking up and down the hall way and the only way you know is to pat him down. >> the need to search more than 1,000 inmates is complicated by holman's shortage of staff. >> they don't want to be. >> take these guys over the line over here. stand on this line or one person comes back or two people can go. that will help you be in control right there. >> he was trying to do too much so i was trying to give him help to straighten back out. where is the idea?
11:04 am
he needed to be lead back here. it goes back to the same thing. you don't have the things they try to do. >> not enough staff and too many weapons can only lead to one thing. hours after the crew wrabed, the following morning it was the main topic of conversation among the inmates. >> two bets over and they wake up. i look and see it taking place. >> i was awakened saying stab me, stab me. >> naturally i jumped up and i get up and tim is putting his shirt around his arm and bleeding profusely.
11:05 am
i was standing there and like in a zone. in a dangerous place in his mind. he starts to come back and he has a knife in his hand. the blade is about 14 inches long. i immediately grab my towel off the bed and i approached him and said back up, man. as he was doing so, he ran in. >> instead of letting him keep that knife in the condition he was in, i felt i should take it. >> there was no officer in there. he was out doing something else. i felt like i didn't want to see nobody else get hurt with the knife. it was a pretty nice knife. i never seen a knife that nice. >> i never saw this wound, but when he raised his arm, blood was running like water. i made a tournequet out of his t-shirt and said man, you have to get you some help. let's go. as we were going up to the dorm, the officer came in and said what happened?
11:06 am
>> there should have been two people on duty. we were short of staff. we were covering that up by using overtime. one of my biggest headaches that night is how much longer we will be able to sustain the guys working as much overtime as they are working. >> the next day, a couple of these guys will hear about it. man, i was dreaming somebody got stabbed. they said no, it really happened. i'm thinking it was a dream because it was their doing. i told these guys, you are still in prison. no matter where you go. >> it's just difficult to try to keep going at the rate we are going with the amount of staff we have. >> coming up next on lock up, extended stay, the stack victim states his case.
11:07 am
>> you are asleep with these guys? >> they woke me up tonight. >> they stabbed you three times? >> four holes in my side. >> later, the warden decides enough is enough. >> everybody on your rack. let's go. i'm embarking on a journey of epic proportion. i will travel, from sea to shining sea, through amber waves of grain, and i won't stop until i've helped every driver in america save hundreds on car insurance. well i'm out of the parking lot. that's a good start. geico, fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent, or more on car insurance. smal l bu sinesses are the smal lifeblood of our communities. on november 26th you can make a huge impact by shopping small on small business saturday. one purchase. one purchase is all it takes. so, pick your favorite local business... and join the movement. i pledge to shop small at big top candy shop.

the dorm? >> that's the first weapon i seen. >> you telling me the whole story? >> that's the truth. >> i appreciate that because we do not tolerate this type of activity at the department of corrections. as far as the actions i want to take, it's pretty simple. we know the bad guy and who stabbed him, but there was a little bit more to the story than what he is admitting. we will interview the suspect. see what he's got to say. how are you doing, man? have a seat. this is an assault case and you know will being an assault case it can generate a free will case, you understand that, right?

11:15 am
them i have seen. >> he could have killed him with that. >> they are filing a charge more than anything. i feel pretty sure they will, yeah. >> a lot more to the story though. >> oh, yeah. >> violent attacks like this one are not common in the honor dorm despite the fact that many of the residents are serving time for violent crimes. >> i came to prison for murder, right? however my brother killed a man, right? >> he was with me. he just guilted me in the eyes of the law. >> i was there. i refused to turn stakes on my brother. they gave me a murder case,
11:16 am
right? >> trying to get drugs and didn't have any money. his girlfriend, it was her daddy. the subject kachl up with him having some money. that's the reason i went there. it just turned into when i walked in the house, he was at home. back in the bedroom, when i come in, i told him to get the money. i had no intention of hurting him. i didn't have the intention. he reached up under a pillow on the other side of the bed and he must have got a gun under there and that led to me killing him. >> how did he die? >> i stabbed him. >> both bookers continue to be violent in prison, but after numerous injuries and lengthy stays in administrative segregation, they recognized the need for change. >> for this wouldn't have happened that night, it would have eventually happened or one
11:17 am
