tv   The Squeeze  MSNBC  December 2, 2011 11:00pm-12:00am PST

11:00 pm
police say four people were killed inside a house around 4:30 in the morning. >> a 14-year-old boy is in critical condition. >> one person dead. one person critically wounded. >> any guy on the street will tell you the game is not the same anymore. >> he's there. >> turn the car off! >> watch him, guys. watch him. >> right behind the house! >> you can't really stop it all together, gang violence. >> i'm handcuffed next to all these big dudes, i'm like, oh god, what did i get myself into? >> when they are flipped on the inside, those are always better. >> here we go. >> let me see those hands!
11:01 pm
let me see those hands! hands! get on the ground! >> cheer up, son. some day this war is going to end. >> police! come to the front door! it's the police! one at a time, out of the front door. put your hands up! one at a time. one at a time! what don't you understand? >> supposed to be a lot of weapons in the house. a lot of times gang members will store the weapons at somebody else's house.
11:02 pm
>> standby. >> let me ask you a question, man. i'm talking to you because i'm trying to give you an opportunity to tell me if there's anything in there. if there's something in there, everything is going to jail. we're not going to put it on one person. if there's something in there, you need to let us know. if there's something in the house, you let me know right now. we may be able to save you from going out of the house with the rest of the people. >> it's not a big deal to them. it's not like they're shopping. they come out like it's a normal thing for them. there's marijuana spread all throughout the house. i think everybody in the house knows what's going on. >> we got three ounces out of the house so far. they blame us. it's all fault that we're here. not their narcotics dealing. it's our fault that we're here. >> my babies don't have no shoes on their feet.
11:03 pm
>> that's what bothers me the most, the kids. i have a daughter. i love my kids. >> what's your first name? how do you spell that? >> the guy we have in custody, the target of the search warrant, he is the husband. so we raided the house today. we got a felon amount of marijuana. and probably pull by once he gets processed and go to court. probably back in business again next week. just a little bit slicker and more aware of the people he deals with. so nobody turns him in again. >> for those who can't post band, the trip from court to jail is strictly one way. every day hundreds of arrestees in cook county find themselves in the same boat. no money, no options, no hope.
11:04 pm
you're gone? 50,000. >> give me your right hand. no, the other side, sir. there you go. >> most fit a common profile. poor, undereducated, and gang affiliated. then there are those who defy the norm. >> the judge didn't want me to get out this time, so he put my bail at $90,000. $9,000 to walk. he did it on purpose so that i wouldn't bond out. i'm just a kid from the suburbs. i got a dui on new year's eve, and i was on probation, and i was behind on my dues. you have to pay $50 every time you go to see your probation officer, and i didn't have any money, because i was spending it on drugs.
11:05 pm
the judge that i had, he's like you're begging me to throw you in jail. my knees were chattering. i'm like looking for my mom, you know. you can't really look for your mom at that point. >> see how they got us up in here? man, we didn't even do nothing wrong, man. >> i'm in the wrong deck right now. i'm in the deck with like maximum security. and i'm supposed to be in the rehab program. i'm this skinny little kid handcuffed to all these big scary gang banger dudes, i'm like, oh god, where am i? >> how long you been buying dope on the west side? >> probably a year. >> you go by yourself or with other people? >> i usually go with other people. i don't have a license. >> you go with random people or the same guy every time? >> the same guy. >> black guy or white guy? he's a user, too? >> yeah.
11:06 pm
>> you buy from black guys? you ain't a gang banger, right? >> no. no. >> how much are you buying at a time. >> i buy like -- at a time. >> it's by chance that investigators at the criminal intelligence unit found this inmate at the wrong time. he's coming down off heroin and ready to sing like a canary. >> how many guys usually out there selling? >> they run it like a fortune 500 company. they have a guy on the phone. the guy on the phone you never meet. he's got a little -- you call him and say, hey, i need a "j." what car you? the camry. i'm about to pull up. >> you get out of the car to get this? >> no. they walk right up. >> he's buying from a hot area. i would love to get in there. the guy serving off the phone and he drives it to you. he can't be that smart.
11:07 pm
he ain't just driving what he's got on him. i'm sure he's making drop-offs and everything else. >> they know you by name? >> no. >> they serve anybody who calls the number. >> i'm telling you. >> i'm serious. >> call it right now off the phone and be like, yo, what's up, i'm on my way down. he's like, yeah. how many you need. any phone. your cell phone he'll do it. >> i'm going to get the number from you. i'm going to get it from you right now. maybe we'll call it. >> i'll do it. >> i don't need you. he said anybody can do it. call and be like, what's up. i'm close. >> yeah, they're going to tell you to go to two spots. be like where you want me to go? >> and this is both of these locations is this the same person that you call? >> yeah. >> what's the phone number? >> i'll go call him and see what he says. if it doesn't matter who calls him. if he says, yeah, we'll do it and we don't show up, he's going to think, oh, we're a dope fiend.
11:08 pm
my ride never showed. i'm going to hit you back when i can get into the city. >> but that's not the people you'll meet. >> that's the guy who puts the call out, though. >> exactly. yeah. >> coming up on "the squeeze" -- >> the red van is right here! it crashed. >> a simple arrest spins out of control. >> right behind the house! >> someone check out on nikki if she was in crossfire. >> we need an ambulance over there?
11:09 pm
11:10 pm
11:11 pm
how many guys are usually out there selling? >> they've got a guy on the phone. the guy on the phone you never, ever, ever meet. >> a middle class kid from a
11:12 pm
good home isn't the typical inmate at cook county. nor is he the likeliest source of intel about a heroin ring, not when it's run by a west side chicago street gang. but all types filter through the jail's criminal intelligence unit. >> we'll call. >> i'll do it. >> make sure you let him know you're waiting on the ride. just see if he's cool. >> yeah. hey, what's up, bro. hey, i'm waiting on my ride right now. you going to be around in like a half hour? all right, cool, thanks, bro. for sure. >> unreal. >> he's like yep, yep. >> i never heard it done with no names, no code, no nothing. they just, what do you need? i'm going to bring it to you. that's pretty ballsy. >> the next step for inn vest
11:13 pm
gator drake carpenter is to set up a sting operation with the police. in the meantime, he'll return the kid a favor. >> is the deck you're on cool? >> no. >> it's not cool? >> no, i'm scared [ bleep ]. >> you should be scared. i can move you somewhere you might be a little bit more comfortable. see if we can put you in gang free. understand that comes with a price, too. >> whatever you want. >> i'll do it for this. >> yeah, okay. then whenever i'm out. >> i'm going to give you all my information. you're going to see me again before you leave. >> okay. thank you so much. >> all right. you'll be seeing me again either way. i'll come in and make sure your straight. >> the ciu's new informant isn't the only one sweating jail time. >> it usual for you to sell 25 packs in a night and call him up the same day? is this going to be odd?
11:14 pm
>> sheriff police investigators have arrested a self- -- who we'll call ike. >> with him expecting money, are you going to be able to get more product tonight? >> ike angles to stay out of jail by offering to set up his main supplier as well as many others. >> now why this guy is locked up, are you having somebody else to deal with? or are you shut down? hello. what up? i have to get back with you in a minute, man. i'm trying to refill right now. all right? >> act like you're still waiting on him. and he has no idea. >> hello? what's up, shorty? i was on my way over man, and i
11:15 pm
ran into a little problem, man. so i'll be over there. >> what happened? what's up, old school? hey, what's up, man? i'll call you right back. as soon as i get over in the area. it won't be long. >> it's safe to say you have a lot of clientele, right? >> that phone ain't stopped since you been sitting here. >> hello. what's up, bro? what's happening, man? i ain't around. i'm getting something to eat. hold on for a minute. hello? hello? >> all this work for $50 a day. >> oh, you get $50 a pack. >> how many packs you sell a
11:16 pm
day? >> six. >> six packs a day. >> so you're doing pretty good for yourself tax free. >> despite all the customers hounding ike for product, his own suppliers are no longer willing to talk business with him over the phone. it's possible they heard he got caught. >> that was the target? >> yep. >> so he basically got word back that you got caught up. now he's going to shut down with you. >> pick the best one. we have to take you back down to process you. we have to get going. if you can't put something together right now, we have to kind of move on. >> once i check her out and make sure it's clear.
11:17 pm
i don't want to wait too much longer for the second one. the gang unit will be executing a search warrant south of went worth in chicago heights if you can make notification to chicago heights pd, we have hp with us. a lot of times with these suburban departments, they're understaffed and overworked as well. they have full-time gang enforcement teams. now with the economy so bad, they're losing people. so what happens is they'll call in cook county. they'll call in our teams to say we know we're having a drug problem. we can't man a gang team or a narcotic team. >> so the cook county sheriff's police provide support wherever they can.
11:18 pm
especially in chicago's south suburbs where gangs have dug into the fabrics of the communities. >> where you at? >> just left marcum. headed to riverdale pd. >> riverdale is one of those places, located 19 miles south of the city. hernandez and another sheriff's investigator will be helping the police take down a target today. they've been targeting an alleged dope dealer, and they intend to catch him with product. >> that's him? okay, that's him. guys, move in. he's there. he's there. move in. >> but as they move in for the arrest, the situation takes an unexpected turn.
11:19 pm
>> stop the van! stop the van! stop the van! drop your hands. let me see your hands. stop, stop, stop! >> we've got gunfire! shots fired! right here. they crashed. behind the house! >> guys, move in.
11:20 pm
11:21 pm
11:22 pm
>> guys, move in. he's there. >> turn the car off! >> watch it, guys. watch it, watch it, guys.
11:23 pm
>> guns fired! you guys okay? >> yeah. >> which way they go? >> right, right, right. east, east, east! you okay? she was in crossfire. >> hey, nikki, you all right? hey, someone check on nikki, the county. she was in crossfire. red van is right here. it crashed.
11:24 pm
nobody in it? where are we going? where you at? where you at? right behind the house. right behind the house! >> get on the ground! >> get back, move, move! >> we got one here. get your hands where we can see.
11:25 pm
put your hands out where we can see them! i got him covered. i've got him covered. >> do we have a description on the second guy? >> no, no description on the second one. >> i can't breathe. >> we're going to get you an ambulance. >> did i get shot is this. >> 9649. we need an ambulance. we got one that's shot. >> you picked a bad day. >> he just woke me up. wow. wow. wow. how the hell that happen? must have been when i took a fall. >> hey, john. might have to come out for this.
11:26 pm
they were shooting at the target. he wouldn't stop. got into a foot pursuit. yeah, we got both of them. one guy is hit. i'm out of breath. yeah, i believe we're both okay. it's not the first time i've gotten hurt. >> only one person is seriously injured, the target of the arrest. he suffered a gunshot wound, but is in stable condition. by standard practice, illinois state authorities must now step in to review the shooting and judge whether the riverdale cops opened fire with just cause. neither hernandez nor the other sheriffs investigator discharged their weapons, so they're clear from review.
11:27 pm
>> our top story on news radio 07. it was a violent night in chicago. >> a round of shootings injured 40 people. >> six people dead. 11 others hurt. >> acts of indescribable violence. >> the gun violence is out of hand. they had 63 shootings in one weekend alone. you have double-digit numbers in high school kids, chicago public schools who have been killed this summer alone. so any time we can get something off the street, i feel good about it. whether it's a 22 or we pulled oozies off the street. as long as it can fire and kill somebody, it's a bonus for us. okay. did you see a mattress out here? she said it's in a sheet on the left hand side.
11:28 pm
>> looks like a shotgun. >> obviously you can't really stop it all together, the gang violence. but all we can really do is slow it down here. >> all right, man. we got it. you know. get back at me. when you have court again? you know, just give me some notice. i get everything together for you. >> a street informant is trying to earn good credit before his case goes to court. he's facing a felon drug charge and hopes by turning in illegal firearms the state's attorney will offer him a plea bargain for a reduced prison sentence. >> it depends on the person, the case they're fighting, and what their background looks like. this guy had a lot of drugs on him, and the case was really solid. so they may not be willing to just forget it. but they are willing to maybe
11:29 pm
not slam him with the eight, and maybe give him the three. it goes case by case, though, it really does. >> giving up stolen or black market guns can be a win-win proposition for informants and investigators alike. every firearm counts in a city battling twice the murder rate of los angeles and three times that of new york. >> it's the code on the street that a snitch or whatever. we all know it doesn't really exist. but sometimes who give police information, you have to have balls to do it. hey, i'm in the green taurus. he just pulled up. all right. this is him right here. >> one of the ciu's best informants is an active latino
11:30 pm
gang member who we'll call tin man to protect his identity. he's turned in ten illegal guns to date. a betrayal punishable by death if his gang ever found out. >> for me the hope is to get these guns off the streets. you know, just had two brothers killed in the last two years. i don't want to see no other families doing through what my family is going through. it's killing my mom right now. two in two years. five family members have been lost. there's no remorse. i've been around gangs a long time. i'm just happy i'm still alive, you know? >> and not a reason why you kill each other.
11:31 pm
you just know that's how you were raised. that's hour your uncles felt. >> it's just the way it was. people don't know what they're fighting for. that's the sad thing about it. people lose their lives. for what? >> even though he's working off a case, something about this guy, i think he's very genuine. i think some people really want to make a change at some point. this is one of the guys i put some faith in. summer's coming. once it gets warm. just this last week, how many people got shot? >> your held captive in your own neighborhood. it's nice that you can sit on the porch, but you don't want to catch a stray. it's scary. we see it every day. the innocent ones are the ones that catch the stray bullets. maybe that's the part he feels he can do in trying to keep his family safe.
11:32 pm
>> tin man also realizes by working in law enforcement, he risks putting his loved ones in even greater jeopardy. it's a chance many informants are willing to take. >> more than likely somebody will have to pay the ultimate sacrifice. whether it be your wife or your kid, yourself or everybody.
11:33 pm
11:34 pm
11:35 pm
11:36 pm
that was the target? >> yep. >> he got word that you got locked up, and now he's going to shut down with the. >> the colleagues have busted a dope slinger willing to do anything to stay out of jail. the trouble is word travels fast on the street. this hustler, nicknamed ike, phones his main suppliers, but they're not taking his bait. it's likely they already heard he got collared. >> so, i mean, you know somebody on the corner working your shift and he's out there now, tell us who he is, give us a name. we can go to the street and pop him. we have to do something. but we've invested a lot of time in this now, and it's getting late. if results don't start coming
11:37 pm
in, we're going to have to put you downstairs and move on. once we go downstairs and put you in the cell, it's over. >> ike resorts to his last option giving up dealers outside his normal circle of associates. they use his intel leading him to several targets, leading to one in the south suburbs. 48 hours later they obtain a search warrant. >> i want to thank everybody for coming out. we have an informant that has been in the residence. he observed six to seven pounds of cannabis in the residence. along with the target having a .38 caliber in the back pocket. there was other subjects doing buys, too. so it's definitely going on over there. we're going to do at least two, probably three breaches. when we get up there, it's got to be in the middle of the property. so we're going to have to do right-left, right-left.
11:38 pm
>> i can't tell how many will be there when they pull up. >> the same activity that was going on earlier today. it was just an update. is a jaguar there? >> 10-4. >> all right, 10-4. that's our target's car. they're out in front of the car right now. let's see those hands! let me see those hands! hands! hands! get on the ground. get on the ground. sheriff police! get on the ground. do not move. stay on the ground. do not move! >> put your hands behind your back. if anyone moves i'm going to blow your heads off. you hear me? target right here has a large amount of money in his pocket. >> this ain't my house. >> well, your address comes back to here on your i.d.
11:39 pm
>> this ain't my house. this is an apartment building. >> your registered address is this house. >> he was honest about his weed. you going to be honest about yours? you're the one i'm smelling. >> the only way you're going to help yourself on this is you tell the truth. you start lying to me about what's not in the house, i start finding stuff in the house, i'll will take the car. you'll never get the car back. >> there's no bangers in the house? >> shouldn't be or there ain't? there's a big difference between there shouldn't be or there isn't. if you're going to be honest with me, we'll work with you on the car. so there probably is dope in the house? >> no. pistols? >> no. >> there ain't no dope in the house. >> you got a .38 in there? >> a who? >> what you got in the house? all right. we're going to put you in the
11:40 pm
back of the car for right now. if you're honest with me, i can work with you. you got kids? >> it is a gun. >> what kind of gun? >> a .32? >> a .32? is it loaded? where is it at? >> right there on the coach. >> all right, sarg, he's saying there is a .32 on the couch. there should be some weed. there's no pills in the house? other than that pistol, that's it? we ain't going to find nothing else in there? all right. i can work with you now. >> a lot of gang members have attorneys that work for their organization already. the attorneys tell them, don't say anything. give me a call. we'll handle it from there. you the tell the ones who don't have an turn. they'll start telling you immediately. i can do this. i can do that. i can get you this. i can get you that. that's a big difference.
11:41 pm
>> the usual stuff you'll find in the houses is scale ls. the bullets. all right, man, we found the 32. so right now we're looking at a couple felons here. so let's talk like we already know what's going on. i'm not a street cop wondering, hey, do you have anything on you? i already know the résume on you. that's why we're here. you know what we have on you. you know the charges. it's just a matter of time. we'll see. he thinks about it long enough, we know what's going to happen. >> hey, this is hernandez. i'll need a cr for a found article. it's a handgun.
11:42 pm
>> for our unit we take a lot of pride in getting these guns off the street. >> good eye. >> thanks. >> i know it's a priority for the sheriff in all departments. gun violence and trying to alleviate as much of it as possible. >> any illegal firearm recovery is a plus. it's even better when it's an ak-47. that's what an inmate is promising investigators. >> this guy has definitely been around. he's heavy. he's well connected. this guy had a large area on the street. known to be a heavy shooter. currently he's in on a drug case and is looking for some assistance. we don't know right now his motivation. with his background, it's really going to be hard to get him any type of a consideration anyway, but it's worth a try. >> this is a guy that can go a lot of places the police can't.
11:43 pm
>> they also know signing of a major player with his own agenda can get them burned. >> make sure you don't freaking disappear and we don't hear from you as soon as you drive away. m
11:44 pm
11:45 pm
11:46 pm
it's not every day that a cook account jail inmate volunteers an ak-47 to authorities. that's why these investigators are moving quickly on his intel. >> the caliber weapon that he's inferring that he has, it would look good when you go to the state's attorney and let them know we got this off the street.
11:47 pm
>> the inmate asked a family member to bring the weapon to sandoval and carpenter. they agree to meet her at a public location. >> we're sort of towards the back in an unmarked black impala. what kind of car are you driving? all right. see you in a minute. there she is right there. you see it? she just set it downright there. see the blue bag? >> hey, you just set that by the fence? okay i see you. let her pull off, she said. she's spooked. it's definitely not what we had anticipated. i can tell you that.
11:48 pm
what you got right there is a gloc-22 40 caliber full size pistol. this is serious high capacity magazines. >> this is only police issued right here. >> we're moving. brand new 40 gloc. >> it's not the weapon he originally claimed he was going to have, but it's definitely a good hit. >> the gloc recovery along with the inmate's promise to work as a street performance persuades the state's attorney to reduce his bond. a few day later the inmate is on his way home. >> before he's actually 100% free, we'll meet him at the front gate, get everything we need from him.
11:49 pm
contact information, addresses. we'll know where to find him. >> the inmate, whom we'll call taft, new sandoval and carpenter from previous jail stints, but he had never worked with them until now. >> what are you working on? ak? >> taft says he'll get the ak-47 he originally promised them. but investigators never take any promise at face value.
11:50 pm
>> you sure? >> i ain't sure. >> we ain't doubting you. you gave us your word. >> i'm going to make every attempt to have it. >> you made a statement yesterday. you said before i even get excited with my girl, i'm going to make sure you guys have it. that meant a lot. >> you've seen it in action. you know better. you've seen the raw footage. so the issue we're having now is one of your boys has it? >> yeah. >> do they got rounds for it, too? or just a weapon. >> i'm pretty sure. it's a good one, too. >> all anybody would use that for is to send a message.
11:51 pm
>> no, you use that to make a funeral. >> more than one. make sure you don't freaking disappear and we don't hear from you as soon as you drive away. >> no, you going to hear from me. i'm going to take care of this. >> sandoval and carpenter have their doubts as they lead taft out the back gate. >> he could burn us. technically he got us a gun. technically he did what he said he was going to do. his case is still pending. now he knows his case is beatable because the state didn't fight hard to keep him here. >> don't get in no [ bleep ] this weekend, man, and don't forget to call me. all right? what are you thinking? >> who knows, man, what his motives are. that irks me. e. you know what...
11:52 pm
i'll have this instead. [ female announcer ] swap one thing a day for a yoplait light at around 100 calories. it will add up to amazing.
11:53 pm
11:54 pm
11:55 pm
they know you by name? they just serve anyone who calls the number? >> i'm telling you. i'm serious. >> hey, what's up, bro? you going to be around in like a half hour? all right, cool, i need a whole one. all right, cool, thanks, bro. for sure. >> unreal. >> this inmate proved his credibility with a call to his heroin dealer. so investigators try the same number again to make a dope buy. >> yo, man, what's up? trying to get a full load. turn your phone on. i'm going to call you right back.
11:56 pm
>> sounded like he was on the other line. try back in ten minutes. i'm just about to get off 290 right now. if you're in the area, please hit me back man so we can handle this business. >> but the target never calls them back. >> what do you think, spanky? >> it's hit or miss. it's part of the game. >> as for the inmate who gave them the tip, he's been transferred to drug rehab. and they're still leaning on another informant, nicknamed taft, to come up with results. >> this one was the surest thing. >> more than a week has passed since he promised to turn in an ak-47, and they're running out of patience. >> what's up, man? are you going to make it happen
11:57 pm
or no? am i sitting on pins and needles for nothing? i'm going to give you an hour and let me know yes or no today. he's answering the phones, so i'm not getting blown off yet. >> but taft never does come through with the weapon. fortunately, they're having better luck with their other informants. >> what we have are all the guns the ciu unit has seized from drug dealers and gang bangers over the past one-year period. if you want to take a look at all of them, you can see -- >> this is great, guys. fantastic. i don't know if you can put a real value on it. you can never talk about things that don't occur. which was one of these guns was the next to kill a child in the neighborhood? the results is they say you'll never be able to quantify, but it's of tremendous value to the community.
11:58 pm
>> that that you see here will be set for destruction. >> wow. >> ironically enough, one of the guys here made a comment, which i'm still trying to decipher, i couldn't understand what carpenter met by this will fit in his garter belt. >> yeah. yeah. >> chicago police say four people were killed inside a house around 4:30 in the morning. >> a 14-year-old boy is in critical condition. >> one person dead, another person critically wounded. >> the reality is, no matter how many guns that they recover, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands still out there. >> i got it. >> what you got here is a 38 special.
11:59 pm
>> the only choice they really have is to keep trying. >> you're going to see a lot of shooting sin the next month or so as the weather is going up. everybody has been cooped up all winter. all the animosity you had from last summer. i felt like i could have made more money. i could have did this. i could have done that. you can't do that in the wintertime. you ain't taking over blocks in february when it's negative 30. now is the time. now is when they'll start making their move. >> the victims included a woman, a 16-year-old pregnant girl. >> he was shot walking on chicago's west side. >> a 3-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. >> shots were fired.
