congressman calls it bigotry and hatred. unemployment benefits anyone? if you pass a drugs test. we begin as mitt takes manhattan and newt takes the high road as the battle for the republican nomination gets heated three weeks before the iowa caucuses and four weeks to the new hampshire primary. it's all about the benjamins. billed at mitt's multimillion-dollar day. she attending a trio of gangbuster fund-raisers here attracting top donors from the 1%. newt is tainted by the pesky negative attacks sending a letter saying we will run a positive campaign focused on the country's future with ronald reagan's 11th commandment in mind, we will ask our supporters
12:01 pm
not to contribute to any so-called super pac that runs negative ads against any other republican contender. interesting. that letter came less than 24 hours after newt said this about mitt romney in new hampshire. >> the governor would like give back the money he earned from bankrupting something and laying off employees. i would be glad to listen to him. mr. nice guy and newt's letter came less than 48 hours after he said this to mitt romney in saturday night's debate. >> let's be candid. the only reason you department become a career politician is you lost to ted kennedy in 1994. >> that was nasty. the high road is a savvy move for a front-runner with virtually no money at all.
12:02 pm
guess whose super pack put out an ad attacking newt gingrich? mr. millionaire. let's bring in our panel with us from washington. analyst and former rnc chairman and msnbc analyst david corn. chief for mother jones. good afternoon to both of you. i want to get to newt in a second. we have breaking news this afternoon. tragic news indeed. donald trump will not moderate his much-anticipated debate. this is a catastrophe and i'm close to tears. i'm dabbing my eyes. you might think this is because nobody wanted to tar 'tis pate. donald said i am not willing to give up my right to run as an independent candidate. so that there is no conflict of interest within the republican party i decided not to be the moderator of the news max debate. david corn, what is your
12:03 pm
reaction to that? >> you know, martin, the car at the circus with the clowns, it just lost its driver. i think he fired himself. god love donald trump. he is doing it for the betterment and the security of the republic. there may come a time in june, july, or august when we need him to run for president. i think this is all a radios. it's face-saving. mitt romney showed an ounce of spine by saying no to him. i think this was a way to get out and keep those tv ratings high which is really the bottom line for donald trump. >> this is clearly a catastrophe for western democracy. >> it sets us back a bit, martin. it came across the twitter feet. i thought sanity at last. it's a reality we have to get
12:04 pm
used to. we won't end the year as we began with donald trump. having said that, i think as david pointed out, the reality set in. we are in the serious part of this campaign. we can't mess around for those who think they want to be or may be in. we have men and women who are hunkering down for the vote and that debate coming five days before was not going to happen. no candidate really was going to step out there and take the chance in a broad area like that. >> in a broad circus. >> exactly. >> newt gingrich is now mr. ex-10uate the positive. is that the strategy of a front-runner who is woefully behind in the money race? i'm reminded of don drape wher he lost the could and decided to run anti-smoking ads. >> good one. >> that's how the politics work.
12:05 pm
i think at one level that's the case and at another level it's consistent with what newt has been saying from the beginning. how he comported himself throughout the campaign. the response he gave to romney was a response. it wasn't initiated by him to respond back to mitt's broadside about his politics and his baggage. the reality is for the campaign for newt's campaign to take this position is consistent with what the base wants to hear from candidates what and what they want to see. it will be interesting to see if it holds up in the debates before the vote on the 15th. >> given that gingrich practiced poisonous behavior for decades, will anyone believe he is a changed man where the christmas season will spread peace and joy? >> it's like a scorpion saying hey, guys, let's stop stinging. it's not going to happen. if it lasts the end of the week,
12:06 pm
i will be surprised. he is a bomb-thrower. it's how he got where he gets. it's what he wants to do. in fact i thought the interesting moment of the debate on saturday was the moment when mitt romney said newt, i'm like you. i am not a bomb-thrower. guess what. they want bomb-throwing. they end to want it to be aimed at barack obama and democrats and anybody who is reasonable, but yet nevertheless that is newt's nature and it will come out as it continues to be competitive and as mitt and more importantly don't forget ron paul. the ron paul ads are taken off. >> i wanted to put this to mike. i wonder if newt is hoping that the other candidates go positive, but ron paul has a new ad out. take a listen to this. >> do you think voters are going to warm up to you because you
12:07 pm
are boast being getting $60,000 a speech? >> i was charging $60,000 a speech. celebrities leave and sell fewer speeches. we were selling more. >> he is the symbol of that corrupt system. >> this guy has not got skeletons in his closet. he has a whole grave yard in there. >> that was actually said on this broadcast by julian epstein. is that a preview of everything coming against newt and in a way, i wonder whether newt is trying to say let's be friendly because he knows he's the one that will be hammered. >> absolutely. you know where the charges are coming from and what the pounding will look and feel like. you want to try to get in front of that as much as possible. certainly that ad is a boone for someone like mitt romney. those votes if they do get peeled off are going to get peeled off of newt. they may go to someone else like santorum or ron paul, but that's
12:08 pm
the goal is to take the allure and the luster off as much as possible. that is an effective ad and whether or not it resonates to the point where on election day on the 3rd of january, they go we can't pull that trigger remains to be seen. stuff like that will be the order of the day from the ron paul campaign who has a good chance who has a chance to maybe win iowa. >> david, let's move to mitt if we can and we retweeted your video on the campaign trail i believe in massachusetts in 2002. running for governor and props to you for uncovering this. let's play a clip to see how he describes himself. here's mitt romney. >> i think the old stand by definitions of who votes for which party have been blown away. people recognize that i'm not a partisan republican and i am moderate and my views are progressive.
12:09 pm
>> moderate and progressive. wow! >> i am heesh endorsing mitt romney. martin, i have to say that video was dug up by andrew who is a free lance political truth digger. he posted it on you tube and got it out quickly. i think that about says it all. that was in 2002, five years before he began running for president the first time as a die-hard conservative. he said i'm a progressive and a moderate and not a partisan republican. would he say any of those things now before any audience and would he even explain what's happened between 2002 and now? it sums up his flip flops and he tries to run away from them and even bret bair trapped him with a few simple questions.
12:10 pm
>> we saw he was in tears over that. while mitt and newt battle it out, i want you to look at a 78% republican primary field as average to weak. that's more than a quarter saying it's weak. you can't be very impressed yourself by this. >> look. i'm impressed from the standpoint that anyone decides to put their name out there to run for office, it's daunting. >> 78% think it's weak. >> that are 78% is made up of a lot of things and comes from a lot of perspectives. you can beat up on the field all day long. it's a moot point. one of the individuals will be the nominee. get over it. no one else is getting in the race right now. no one else will charge on their whitehorse with the shining armor to save the day or the gop. this is the field and it's set.
12:11 pm
these folks are going to iowa. deal with it. deal with who is able to come through and rise above to take on obama in the fall. >> i do think there is a serious point. i agree it's moot because we will have a nominee. a lot of more serious candidates would better pedigrees in terms of experience and who maybe are even more thorough thinking in terms of policy ideas didn't go for the grass ring this time and chose to sit it out. one reason they did is because they looked at the republican primary electorate and said we can't win with this crowd. this is a crowd that wants bomb throwing and is more motivated by obama hatred than policy proposals and that's why they veered from michelle obama to newt gingrich with a stop in rick perryland for a night.
12:12 pm
they want their anger expressed. it's limited in number of republicans who felt they had a chance at winning and that's why they didn't run. >> given that that's the case, is your advice to mitt romney, he has weeks to turn it around. does he go for the jugular and unleash the dogs of war on newt and ignore what he is saying about considerate and polite politics and hammer the guy? >> my advice is to really put a lot of money into the house in la jolla. >> he put about $12 million into it. >> make it as nice as you can. my other -- listen, she going to have to go after newt. he can't let newt get momentum. there is so much to go after with newt gingrich. without being demagoguic, i don't understand why others, at least ron paul and others haven't really lashed into newt gingrich for having called for a
12:13 pm
congestionally enforced mandate a couple of years ago. he was for obama care. i don't think there is anything wrong with that, but it won't play well with the republican electorate and if the super packs come in and put out commercials, it will take a lot out of his support. >> in the all important endorsement race, newt gingrich claimed no less than hollywood wild man gary busey and racial slur tossing ex-baseballer john rocker. congratulations to newt and magnificent judgment calls there on personality. how can mitt romney matchup with that. what does he have to do? get the ku klux klan involved? >> the fact of the matter is endorsements are nice and they bring money and organization and fanfare. it's all about boots on the ground. that's an advantage that romney has going into iowa and new hampshire. no second-guessing the fact that newt has a lot of catching up to do and has a lot of ground

say to them no slide show and no speech. i don't tee it up. what would it take for to you hire somebody at the end of the day. as a republican i thought they were going to say epa is killing me and obama care is a horribleç thing. i found in meeting after meeting, town after town, unemployment insurance was a competitor to hiring new people. it came to many times the question of i test people because i have a job open and i test people on unemployment and they are taking drugs. all i'm saying is you know what, if you are an injured athlete, a football player on the sideline, the least you can do for your team is to go to your physical therapy. take your rehabilitation and get back on the playing field. as a taxpayer paying for unemployment insurance, i don't think it's draconian. >> what you articulated is ann

ek dote that you have experienced. fine. the evidence points in the absolute opposite direction. in florida where this approach was applied, just 2% of unemployed people failed drug tests as opposed to the overall population where the office found that 8% used illegal drugs. the unemployed, sir, were less likely to be using drugs. you want to introduce this measure at enormous costs. there is no evidence to support your imposition. >> we will have a hearing if there is no evidence. i have to say that the stories that i heard were confirmed by lots and lots. >> 2% in floater. >> 2% in floater. florida. >> that was welfare and i'm talking about unemployment insurance. if it is only 2%, great, we have no problem. i don't understand why you guys are afraid to have a discussion.

we are working untilç februaryr march and i don't think it's unusual. if there is a no bill or no problem at all, fine. i suspect what that number is skewed by is people who no is skewed by by people who no longer apply for the benefit because they know they're on drugs and they're making the choice between drugs or unemployment benefit and they have chosen to stay on drugs. >> i think, sir, the reason why people don't believe this is worth spending a second further on because the cost is exorbitant. but here's a question to you -- republicans will not support the nomination of richard cordray as head of the new consumer financial protection bureau, even though we know that mortgage brokers and financiers repeatedly conducted false and fraudulent trades that brought the global economy to its knees. yet there's no desire to intervene when it comes to the corruption and malfeasance on wall street. but when it comes to the unemployed, you feel obliged to intervene and drug test them.
12:51 pm
would it no make more for you to issue those drug tests or morality on wall street, rather than on the unemployed? >> martin, as you know, i voted against the bailout. i voted against the fannie mae and the freddie mac bailout. i voted against the bush stimulus plan and the obama stimulus plan. i agree with you, it all needs more scrutiny. there's a lot of corruption on wall street. we have to crack down on it. fannie mae and freddie mac, no question about it, we have to crack down on it. but i'm saying in a civil society, can we not have a dialogue to say, you know, if you're going to get unemployment dollars from the general taxpayers' funds, let's find out if drug use is a common barrier for you getting a job, or maybe it's not. and you know what, if i'm totally wrong, martin, i hope i can come back on your show and tell theç folks that i don't think i'm going to find that out. i think these hearings are going to be productive. and i hope, taking it step by step, by the way, it's not a urine test, it's a drug screening test which is noninvasive. it's actually a written test. and if you fail that, it's got a 94% accuracy rate.
12:52 pm
if you fail that, then you take a more invasive urine test. >> congressman jack kingston, i'd be delighted if you were to come back in the future. i'm afraid we've run out of time, but thank you so much for coming on. >> i look forward to it. >> thank you, sir. when we come back, another wild ride on wall street. stay with us. ♪ like so many great pioneers before me, guided only by a dream. i'm embarking on a journey of epic proportion. i will travel, from sea to shining sea, through amber waves of grain, and i won't stop until i've helped every driver in america save hundreds on car insurance. well i'm out of the parking lot. that's a good start. geico, fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent, or more on car insurance. you know the good folks have asked yours truly to teach you about treating frequent heartburn.
