>> staying in construction zones, eating at shelters, not staying at the shelters because there's a lot of people that do drugs there and i just don't want to be in that scene. >> anthony spends his days in jacksonville's downtown public library, formerly an aircraft mechanic in the marine corps, he was discharged a few months shy of his full enlistment. >> i got out of the marine corps because i just really didn't want to be in anymore doing what i was doing. so i kind of whined and cried until i either got my way or they kicked me out. and, well, they kicked me out. >> his father was a marine, so the family moved around a lot. >> it was kind of a rough childhood. a lot of it was my fault. and when i went into the military, our relationship got better, but since i got out, honestly, we haven't talked at all.

i don't think i could face him yet. i want to be able to say all right, i'm doing okay before i actually talk to him. otherwise, i'd feel totally ashamed of myself. >> anthony has been on the streets for ten months, two of those in jacksonville. >> this is the front lobby to the salvation army. welcome to a homeless feeding line. >> i came down here with a friend of mine. >> i've been homeless. >> okay. >> he's really from houston. he says he has an older sister, but they have lost contact. >> it gets to me sometimes where i don't want to be on the street because i know i ain't got nobody. that's what everybody's looking for, someone they can have out here that's going to stick by their side. >> i worry about my child now, you know, child comes before me.

>> 19-year-old teanna is five months pregnant. she and her mother carla have been on the streets for three weeks. they lost their home because of carla's drug use. >> my mom was on crack. rent was due. she wasn't worried about that. >> she and her mother moved to jacksonville from indiana 3 1/2 years ago. teanna was desperate to get out of her mother's house. >> that house is hot, first of all. polices are always in that neighborhood watching that house. i didn't smoke the crack. i didn't want to go to jail. i wanted out of that environment, you know, because i couldn't handle it. so i met this guy at the grocery store. i was thinking about using him, getting out of that house, going to live with him, whatever. well, it didn't work that way. i ended up falling in love with him. >> teanna is due to have her baby in four months and says the father are no longer in contact, despite running away before, she says she is rebuilding their relationship now that carla claims she isn't smoking crack anymore.

>> she's not heavily on drugs like she was before. >> teanna says her priority is finding a place to live before she gives birth. >> i want to be in a house, i want to be somewhere where i know i can just stay, not have to get up and leave because we might get in trouble for being there. have a place for my baby to sleep. >> grew up here in jacksonville. i've been out here for two weeks tomorrow. >> josh says he was raised in a religious home and began to rebel at an early age. >> i started smoking pot when i was 13. from there i moved on to coke. a few months down the road, i was actually dealing. >> two weeks ago, josh says his father, who was training to become a southern baptist preacher confronted him about his drug use. >> the second week of january, i came home really high. my dad asked me, are you high. i was like, hell, yeah, i'm high. that's when they put me out.

so it sunk in, wow, you actually are homeless now. >> when contacted, josh's father refused to verify the events that left josh on the streets. josh says he regrets everything he's put his family through and is desperate to make up for his mistakes. >> my parents want to see me do something to prove to them that i'm not leading a double life still. you can only get so many chances before that's it. >> there is safety in numbers on the streets especially at night. josh must surround himself with people that can protect him and teach him how to survive. >> i am pretty green at this but i am learning. but it's one of those things if you ain't got the experience, you're pretty much road kill. >> next stop is central station. >> anthony heads to his sleeping spot across the river from downtown. he's been there for two weeks. >> i sleep in a building that's under construction, out of the way, up on the second floor.

clothes, food, cigarettes. >> anthony, a former marine and his friend james, a recovering crack addict are saving money for an apartment. anthony has shown up at the labor pool four days this week, but this is his first time to go out on a job. >> right now, i'm on my way to the construction yard working on a ramp, be working for about eight hours, get $8 and save up money so we have a place to live. >> james has been working and saving his money all week. >> i made $233 and he got $100, $333 total this week. we're going to the check cashing place to cash these checks, leave there and go to st. james place and get a room. >> james and anthony have earned enough money to share a room at a low cost downtown hotel. >> we are now at st. james inn.

>> 22-year-old runaway bam and 19-year-old teanna met on the streets and are now in a relationship. bam is determined to get teanna off the streets before her baby is due. she is five months pregnant. bam isn't the father, but he is willing to hustle for money to better their situation. he's come up with a plan to pose as an attendant at a nearby parking lot. drivers will then give him money for a parking spot. >> you go right over here to where the parking spot is, the parking lot and after 10:00, the guy leaves right there and all the cars that come through to get a parking spot will pay you $5 to get a parking spot. >> bam has a list of ways he can earn good money fast. he prepares crack to be sold and also deals other kinds of drugs. >> go to the southside, cook some dope up for my home boy. a bunch of illegal stuff. was making?

probably not much, about $500 a week. and then past this week, it's just went downhill because i've been with her. i'm wanting to do it, go back, but she's wanting me to work and work every day. >> if he wants to be with me, he's wanting to do illegal stuff. then what if he gets thrown in jail? you know what i'm saying? i don't need that. >> that's the [ muted ] i put up with right now. >> bam and teanna are going to meet up with teanna's mother carla who is also homeless. she sleeps in a tent in the woods with a couple of friends. >> home sweet home. >> teanna has been collecting baby clothes from the local missions and keeps them in a plastic bag by her mother's tent. >> here's the baby blanket. it needs washed, though. all this stuff needs washed. here's this one.

i got a bunch of little onesies. >> teanna does not have regular prenatal care. she had a sonogram at a local hospital and found out she's having a girl. teanna refuses to go into a shelter because men and women are not allowed to sleep in the same quarters and teanna does not want to be separated from bam. when she delivers, she risks having her baby placed in foster care if she is found to be an unfit mother. 18-year-old runaway and jacksonville native josh has been on the streets for two weeks. before leaving home, he says his father gave him one last piece of advice. >> the last thing my dad told me was, he said if you want to try to repair what damage you've done, go to trinity because they've got a program where you can detox. i went to trinity rescue mission. >> trinity rescue mission helps people who are addicted to drugs

or alcohol. while there, josh began making friends. >> me and logan trained together in the program and both left at the same time. we've kind of slept together, watched out for each other. >> going to salvation army, get something to eat. >> this is their daily routine. after spending the day at the library, josh and his friends head to salvation army to eat dinner. with the help of those around him, josh is beginning to learn the realities of surviving on the streets. >> i am sort of new at this and it has been kind of a shock to me and it's one of those things that i'm learning firsthand as i go along. >> it's 117 apiece, plus -- >> anthony and james have just finished talking to the manager of the st. james inn. he won't allow them to share a room. >> getting frustrated. that's what it is. about getting something. >> the manager is willing to

rent them separate rooms, but they're $5 short. james and anthony head to the palms hotel to see if they can get a room there. >> that place there, see if we can get a room together. >> we're going to scotty's first for a cigarette. >> we can't afford cigarettes, man. you don't understand. if we need $5 more to get that, you're worried about a cigarette, i'm worried about a roof. >> the friends have a unique relationship. james helps anthony survive on the streets of jacksonville while anthony supports james in his efforts to stay off crack. but now the frustration over renting a room is getting the best of them. >> you're being a little rude walking real fast. if you want to get a cigarette, you can. >> no, i'm not. >> i'm not telling you what to do with your money. i'm just trying to think smart here. >> i want to see about getting a room. >> there are no rooms available at the palm tree. james and anthony will have to wait another few days to get off the streets.

21-year-old run away and former marine anthony arrives at hemming plaza, a park in downtown jacksonville. he's just come from a motel room his friend james rented so they would not have to sleep on the streets. james told anthony he'd rented the room for the entire week, but this morning anthony found out that he had only paid for one night. anthony also realized that all his money was missing. he believes james stole it. >> when i woke up this morning, all the money that i had was gone and james is nowhere to be found. he managed to lie and steal from me. >> when asked by the production team, james denied taking the money. anthony also suspects that james is using drugs again.

his parents when he was 12 years old, but he isn't sure why. >> i guess a neighbor called family services and said i was running outside barefooted. so they came out and said, oh, this is not fit for a child. the parents were fighting and everything so they just took us out and we went into foster placement. >> oh, look at the front of that car. >> when he was 19, his father died and for a brief time he lived with his mother in jacksonville. when she moved into a new apartment a few months later, she told him he couldn't live with her anymore. >> that night i slept in the church and slept in the stairway, freezing cold. i went on the streets. became homeless, you know, officially first time being homeless. >> rodney has been on and off the streets for five years. recently, he applied to a couple of local schools to become a patient care technician, a health care professional who provides direct care to patients. >> i'm like man, i'm tired of this.

>> sirens blare off in the distance, setting the group into motion. after leaving the park, josh did not seek medical attention. things are looking up for 24-year-old runaway rodney. he's still homeless but he's been accepted into the patient care technician program at concord career college. this morning, he has an appointment to meet with a financial aid counselor. >> right now, i'm seeking help from the state. they say i'm approved already but i still, i don't have a job right now. >> rodney is prepared to juggle school and day labor to finish his program. i want to say, here, this is what i know. this is what i'm good at. this is how i'm going to do it. let's do this. you know what i'm saying? they like people like that. i feel confident. i know i'll get it. you know what i'm saying? that first day of school, when i get my scrubs, i'll put my purple scrubs on, i'm going to look in the mirror i'm going to

his friends to sleep in abandoned hospital downtown. being alone means being vulnerable. it's safer to sleep in groups. the production team of this program gave anthony a disposable video camera to independently record the realities of life as a runaway. he used it to shoot video of the inside of the building where he and his group sleep. >> now we're on the second floor. at night it gets very dark. there's no electricity, no plumbing. no real anything, just kind of where we stay. it's got a bunch of holes in the wall. beat up. yeah, very rugged looking. the ceiling is a little cracked. >> anthony found the place so he makes the rules. no sex, no drugs and no drinking. anthony also tries to ensure the safety of the group while they sleep. >> this is where we come in at.

this is kind of the security system. when somebody comes inside, it gets pushed down. go ahead and knock it down. that's why we keep it up. anybody that comes inside has to make that noise. >> before heading into the abandoned hospital for the night, josh says he's taking small steps toward repairing his relationship with his parents. >> i mean, i try and contact them at least once a week, just call them and let them know i'm doing okay. my dad, he's kind of excited because he really is glad that i actually am trying to get straight and my mom, it's one of those things that she's glad, but you can tell there's more apprehension there. >> nighttime is the hardest on josh.

he used the video camera the production team gave him to explain how hard it is to be on the streets at night. >> you never know where you're going to put your head down at night. and even if you do, in our case, we don't know if it's even safe to enter. i mean, who's to say one of these days we aren't going to pop our head in here and get it [ muted ] cut off by somebody or get shot or stabbed in the middle of the night. we live in abandoned building where people died. it's an abandoned hospital. we live in a place that we're sleeping on the floor on blankets. i hate living out here. coming up, teanna threatens to leave bam if he doesn't stop his illegal activities. >> i don't want to be with you if this is what you're going to do. 19-year-old run away teanna, who's five months pregnant, has almost decided on a name for her baby girl. >> i think i'm going to choose adrianna or tatiana rose marie. i'm stuck between those two names. >> teanna's on her feet most of the day. it is hard on her this far into her pregnancy. >> when i get to walking really fast, it starts hurting real bad. everybody tells me i need to settle down on walking because it could put me in labor early.

leaves her stand at exactly 9:00. bam stands by her booth, but he isn't there long enough to make any money. the attendant is on her way back. >> i thought she was going to be gone longer than this break. boy, let me tell you, i'll make a killing on this. >> bam vows to return later tonight after the attendant goes off duty. he and the group head to hemming plaza. bam says that letting go of life on the streets won't come easy for him. >> once you get used to it and you're in it, you're making money, it's hard to just walk out. it's kind of in you. you all right? >> but bam says he will do whatever it takes to make his relationship with teanna work. >> i'm going to try my best to stick this out with her and see what happens. >> she and her soon to be born baby and her mother carla are

vowed to stick by his girlfriend tiana even though he's not the father of her baby, but tiana who is five months' pregnant says she is tired of bam's empty promises. >> he said he would have me off of the streets a long time ago. if he was a real man he would go out and get a job like a real man should, grow up. you mature. tiana looks for the baby clothes given to her in the park. the clock is ticking for tiana, she could lose custody of her baby if she's deemed an unfit mother. >> i don't want to take the chance of losing my kid. and what is killing me is just the thought of losing it that scares me. because it is part of me. it's my blood. it's my baby. ♪ ♪ >> tiana is too far along in her pregnancy to bet a job. she's relying on the others in

her group to get her off the streets. they've been talking about doing day labor to be able to afford a place. >> they were talking, i guess, my mom and bam that if they worked from monday to friday, combine that money, we can get into a place. i'll just watch and see what happens. tiana has not made any efforts to get off the streets to ensure that her baby will not be taken from her. she said as a last resort she will reach out to family members in indiana to see if anyone will take her in before her baby is due. 21-year-old runaway anthony is taking steps to leave jacksonville. he's looking into a government-run program called job corps that gives at-risk youth transitional housing and vocational training. >> i'm getting set up in job corps to see if i can get off the streets and get a helping hand and get back into the job force. i just went to orientation

today. my goal is to just become -- i guess, typical member of society, working every day, living and contributing back to society. >> for now, anthony remains the leader of the group that sleeps in the abandoned hospital. he says it will be difficult to leave his friends behind. >> i know everybody that stays there, so i've got a soft spot for everybody. >> i want to see them get out of the same situation that i'm trying to. >> anthony is optimistic about his future. i'm going to look back on this as a good learning experience. it's a very humbling experience. >> if anthony is accepted into the job corps program, he'll be assigned to a school in kentucky. >> in the end, i know that everything will work out somehow, some way. it's going to happen. ♪ ♪

faith in god, and the disposable video camera the production team gave him, josh says he tries to stick to his morals even while out on the streets. >> it's like the bible streets, if you train up a child in the way she should go, heel not depart from it when he is a man. my parents raised me right and in a godly way and because of that i'm stronger for it because you know what? even though i'm on the streets i'm doing my best to live up to the way my parents raised me. 24-year-old rodney has moved out of his friends' apartment and into a homeless shelter. >> i left the place i was staying at because i didn't like the environment. he's also quit doing day labor. he has a new job that is paying him a good hourly wage. >> i now have a job that does work on the house. call it what you will. but i get paid $15. 80.
