good monday morning. i'm chris jansing. can anyone stop mitt romney at this point. candidates are trying to slow him down. first round of punches starting sunday morning. look at this. >> can we drop a little bit of the baloney. >> if his record was so great as governor of massachusetts, why didn't he run for re-election? >> we can't do well against obama if we have a candidate that endorsed single pair systems and t.a.r.p. bailouts. >> and now a super pact booking

[ applause ] >> you got that big applause line. huntsman is trending up in the polls. santorum trending up in the polls. what do you think? do you think that they can make enough of a dent in his lead to make people think twice or do you agree that there's this inevitability now? >> as much as i hate to agree with a conservative columnist, think that's more or less the case. there were a few flashes of attacks on the sunday morning debate. if you look at what newt did on the newt richter scale of one to ten, his blasts were about maybe a 2.5, a 3. they were all about process issues. you didn't run for re-election.

7:05 am
game changer potentially? >> if mitt romney scores in the low 30s or even below 30, it may be a game changer. if you look at the campaigns, instead of looking at what's happening with mitt romney, if you look at rick santorum and newt gingrich, they've had terrible campaigns here in new hampshire. their message has been all over the place. they lost ground in the tracking polls. rick santorum got bogged down with social conservative views and if newt gingrich is attacking mitt romney, no one takes that seriously. this is a guy who said he was paid $1.6 million as an historian for freddie mac. he's not making a good case. his message at every event changes. they both had an opportunity here to go after mitt romney and to uplift themselves and they failed miserably.
7:06 am
>> i want to get back to those newt gets $5 million from a friend who gives it to his super pac and they buy the half hour movie attacking romney. we'll show you what will play in south carolina. this movie lays out the lives of people who work for four companies taken over by bane capital. >> it hurt so bad to leave my home because of one man that's got 15 homes. >> i want to bring in michael. tell us a little more about this. >> well, this is actually what is a game changer here is an example of a game changer is the roll of the superpac. here you have a $5 million infusion of cash from a billionaire casino magnate.
7:07 am
we all expected these sort of attacks to be front and center from democrats in the general election if romney is the nominee. what we didn't see coming was that conservative republicans like gingrich using the same line of attack in the republican primary. that film is strong enough. i watched it over the weekend. it intersplices human accounts of workers who were laid off after bain capital shut down their companies. shots of romney getting his shoes polished on an airport runway. as an attack ad, it's pretty strong. it's pretty effective whether it can move the needle for newt gingrich is a whole other
7:08 am
question but it does show how these superpacs can influence the election. >> let me play you a little bit of what newt gingrich had to say on the "today" show this morning. >> it's based upon historical facts. at some point governor romney will have to hold a press conference and walk through with considerable detail some of the companies that bain took over where they looted companies and left people unemployed and walked off with millions of dollars. >> as michael just said, david, these are the kind of attacks you might expect from the democrats. i guess the question is the white house sitting back saying thank you, thank you, thank you. this is all working out so well for us. >> well, i tell you, i'm really happy to have newt gingrich take the mother jones perspective here. others who have covered bain and raised these issues. we've seen in the last week mitt romney get tripped up over how many jobs were created or lost

by bain. you don't expect a las vegas casino magnate with shady deals financing something that attacks capitalism and i assume the romney camp will strike back. i think what mike said there was key thing. these attacks will not help newt gingrich. he's had an undisciplined campaign and has more baggage than anyone else out there. >> do you agree it won't help him? >> for two reasons. like david said, i mean, newt gingrich is not very likable. when he levees these complaints, i would look for a mitt romney ad in the future. you had former governor on your program the other day saying
7:10 am
none of the candidates like superp superp superpacs. everyone is in the same park on this. >> obviously you can't put the geni back in the bottle. maybe we'll see something different. >> i think this is the way presidential elections will be fought. the candidates sort of keep their hands clean while superpacs do the dirty work. a couple weeks ago when newt gingrich was getting hammered by the romney superpacs. he demanded romney disown the ads and he would run a positive campaign, that was then. this is now. >> shocked. >> fully embracing.

7:18 am
possible exception of unemployment rate going down a little are these continuing republican campaigns and long debates. i think these republican candidates must feel that they are kind of extras in the barroom scene from "star wars." >> some are talking about not so many debates in 2016. it's too much. >> it is too much. your previous guest were talking about newt gingrich attacking mitt romney yesterday for pious baloney. new hampshire may be the pious baloney capital of the western world at this moment because the candidates are spending so much time trying to appeal at the extreme of the party that they are not talking to most americans. they're not talking about things that concern most americans. they are basically attacking one another all in attacking mitt romney and going after him like desperate housewives go after one of their members and so i do think that that's helped
7:19 am
president obama in the short-term but always like to remind that it's early in the campaign. right now i would rate president obama a slight underdog but he has a chance to win in november partly because the public really hasn't warmed tremendously to any of the republican candidates so far. >> because you've been to so many new hampshire primaries and on the ground so many times, we've seen in the past that new hampshire has produced surprises. last weekend can definitely move the numbers. what are you feeling there, dan? >> well, new hampshire is among the hardest places in the country to read before a primary partly because people in new hampshire love to surprise. they don't like to sort of validate the person who came out of iowa. secondly, they tend to decide very late in the campaign. i agree right now that in new hampshire it's mitt romney's to lose. he's basically running against himself. if he doesn't win by say ten points or more, it may be cast even though he finishes first
7:20 am
that he didn't do as well as expected. i have a hunch, you never report your hunches but it doesn't hurt to talk about them, that jon huntsman has put so much in new hampshire, jon huntsman if there's a surprise in new hampshire, it may be huntsman breaking himself in the pack. the polls indicate for whatever they may be worth, romney, paul and even huntsman or gingrich. gingrich is a very dangerous candidate for mitt romney particularly when he views wounded and damaged which he does right now. not just in new hampshire but moving to south carolina gingrich could be real trouble for mitt romney. my guess is romney finishes first. if he doesn't get ten points or better in the lead, it will be seen as not a great victory for him and huntsman keep an eye on him. he could be the big surprise. >> dan rather, always good to see you and have the benefit of
