>> look, i think it right. and in the hours to come. as you know over the weekend, santorum and gingrich opened up on romney and decided to make it a big issue in the closing days before the new hampshire primary. they will hit him hard on that and the sound that you just played will come into play in the news cycle today. it's a gaffe, a real gaffe and it expoeses him on an issue heading into south carolina and certainly the people in chicago that collect video the way that they do are laughing and smiling over having that piece of sound to use in the fall. >> i thought i heard someone say you could hear david axelrod's tail wagging. it was picked up on not two

hours after it was aired. jon huntsman came out with this. >> i will always put my country first, it seems that governor romney believes in putting politics first. governor romney enjoys firing people. i enjoy creating jobs. >> that is pretty loud sound, but needless to say, jon huntsman already using it as an arrow. guys, on the panel, i want to ask, we talk about mitt romney closing the deal or not, joe mcquaid and the new -- a tin ear and plenty of pals in the republican incrowd, romney would be a disaster as the nominee. robert, what do you make of that? >> ouch. ouch on more than one point.

he knows mitt romney pretty well, what is telling about mitt romney overall is he makes these comments that appear to be on the surface -- >> i don't know that it's sly. >> he makes these comments on the surface is, you know, what? it's a slip of the tongue but it's a deeper comment perhaps about what he thinks. he said that corporations are people too. he said that a couple of months ago and now he is saying this about firing people. it gives the impression that he simply does not care and the impression that frankly he is a rich millionaire. >> no it's doesn't. am i the only one that things it's not a big deal. this is going to play to republicans that think this president is going along the wrong path. >> when we talk with romney comments about firing people and corporations being people too, i think the concensus is that it not served him well and he has to over ccome the idea that he

a venture business guy. we saw romney make a effort to talk about the early days as a capitalist talking about his first days at staples. we have a bit of sound, positioning him more as a hands on manager. let's hear that. >> when we decided to get behind a company called staples when i knew you would know well. do you know how many people work there? 90,000 people work there today. we opened the very first store, i was there the night we hoped the first store. we helped stock the shelves. >> we stocked the shelves. just in terms of poll numbers. we have a tracking poll that said, sorry, in another poll, romney has fallen for five day straight and down ten points.

huntsman and paul are gaining. is this stuff going to hurt him? we have 24 hours and i think it's something like 44% of new hampshire residents have made up their mind, meaning plenty have not yet. >> it's a before the primary that votes move. the voters tend to be voters that wait until the last minute to make a decision. a lot of people are on purpose un decided. there's a way that romney could have said this thing that would have been in line with republican ideals and not damaging people, but to say i like the right to fire people off, there's a certain type of enjoyment that he seemed to take in it, it's damaging sound and

different way and spoke to his audience. we know that women and independent voters will decide the election. when women and independent voters listen to that and it will be replayed over and over again, they will say he is not come passionate. >> let's talk about the guy that is trying to take votes away from romney who is jon huntsman who is already on the attack for this comment specifically. you know, i think he is an interesting case, we talked about him a lot on the show, he is a big head scratcher. out there, what is the sense, some polls had huntsman in second place, we see him rising finally in the polls, will he be able to guest lift going into south carolina and florida? alex, i think the question is, hunting man is clearly to move here. >> ppp poll has him moving up four point skps ron paul fading a bit. the internal polls have the same

thing. they sort of thing he is that tie with ron paul in second place and i say, moving up, and the end, the momentum is what matters. i think the two questions will matter. one one is will he finish in second place. if he continues to tick downward and will get a double digit victory, does mitt romney end up with fewer votes than he got in 2008 or fewer votes than in iowa, that may make him look vulnerable and huntsman's second place finish look stronger, then the question is, does jon huntsman have enough money to go to south carolina and florida and get on the air. without any money it won't matter. 53 has mon if he has money, and he gets up in the air in south carolina and florida, he could do damage to mitt romney in both of those

make it inevitable in south carolina if he wins? >> no, if you add up the conservatives, sort of certified conservatives, newt gingrich and rick santorum and perry, you get the same numbers as romney gets in the polls, maybe a bit more. there's an old phrase called the shape of the field defines the whip winner. and the shape is romney up against three or four others to his right. so he basically gets all the center, center right, if there are any moderate republicans in the south, he gets them. he just gets such a big piece of territory against the rest of the field. it's the way years ago that jimmy carter was able to get the field. it's the mathematics of it. >> the pie is only so big, jimmy williams, you are a native son of the state.

compete like he will have to in the coming states? it remains a question mark. >> second time i was up here for one of these big events we had paul songus running against bill clinton at the time, although he won by eight or nine points being the local guy from massachusetts, the form senator, he had nothing awaiting him afterwards. that is the way for santorum, no matter how good he did in iowa, there was nothing waiting for him to exploit the victory. there's no santorum organization. there's nothing there. it's his willingness to go door to door in iowa and that is behind him. and that is sad, you route for the guy that is out there by himself, fighting with his voice and heart. romney has the money behind him and newt is getting some money. i don't know whether santorum has money behind him. i heard he raised a million

when white house press secretary jay carney holds his briefing we are expecting he will be asking about "the obamas" a new tell-all about the first couple. it's coming out tomorrow, we have an advanced copy here at "now" with alex wagner. i want to read a couple of parts of it. what has come across from what i read is the contention inside the white house and also, you know the criticism that was lobbed at obama is that he is too isolated. michelle and rahm emanuel had almost no bond, she was skeptical of him when he was selected and now he returned the favor, they were the president's two spouses. one public and official and one private and informal.

documentary that hundreds of millions dollars if not billions of dollars were stolen of that money that was sent to iraq and the question is who stole it and where is the money now. >> and i have some of it? you know, eamon, you hear sth r stories like this, combat forces have pulled out and the contention of the white house is that it's more stable than this was presume ably at the time when trucks were carrying pallets of cash to places. we get news that a car bomb killed 14 people in baghdad, i wonder from an outsider's perspective, do you think the country is more stable now than it was when the stuff was happening with bazal. >> it is more stable, bazal's convoys were getting hit by gunfire all time when they were running the convoys.

but for the obama administration they feel they chalked up a campaign promise, they said they would end the war and they did it. now the question is whether or not the promise will come back to bite him if iraq really blows up in a violent ugly way, will it be seen as a problem pulling out the p troops. that is the gamble that the administration is making right now. saying that we have to take the training wheels off the country at this point. >> the man in the center of the bazal or the most intriguing aspect of the puzzle, his job, transporting money in sort of war torn and unstable areas is not over. it sounds like he is trying to turn it into a cottage industry. >> yes, he handled up to $40 billion in physical cash, at one point putting money in the back of a garbage truck and then

running it down route irish so they did not know what was in there. he has applied for a job running money in libya. he is in the sudan, he is interested in afghanistan. this is a business, and if you have a billion dollars in cash and you need to get it into a car zone, bazal is your guy, and he wants the global financial institutions to know who he is and what his track record is. >> it's a testament to our role in getting these countries back on their feet, if you will, when you mention libya and so on and so forth. where does the investigation stand now in terms of this money, eamon? the inspector general expects to have it wrapped up in 2012. right now they are tracking down bits and pieces of it. they are confident they know where the bulk of it went.
