it seems that governor romney believes in putting politics first. governor romney enjoys firing people. i enp jjoy creating jobs. today we have a response from tim pawlenty. >> when you are a junior person new in the door of any company, as it happen its ups and downs, of course you will wonder will i make it or be the one laid off. >> and how will that impact the battle for second place. has ron paul hit a ceiling and a revealing new book that exposes rifts between the first lady and the president's inner circle. good day. in our daily fix today, the pro gingrich super pac winning our future has announced that it will spend $3.5 million

attacking mitt romney. and put out this ad. chris, this is after we come from iowa, and newt gingrich has complained about the negative super pac attacks, the romney attacks against him. he is now doing the same thing. does he risk looking like a hypocrite? >> sure. but i think at this point he may not care. you know, andrea you and i talked about this, newt on a mission, that he mu fundamentally -- he feels that mitt's super pac ruined his chances and he does not care all that much and he is willing to do this. i would say though that the romney team, this is, maybe not verbatim but a very likely point of attack from the obama campaign if and when romney
10:02 am
winds up being a nominee, they will attack him on bane and he has to get ready for good answers to these attacks. >> mitt romney was at a chamber of commerce breakfast, i was there today. this is part of what he had to say to the business people here in new hampshire. >> i want individuals to have their own insurance, that means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. it also means that if you do not like what they do, you can fire them, i like being able to fire somebody for not serving me well. >> you know the opponents are climbing all over this, i want to be able to fire people? >> i get what he was trying to say, which is you want personal accountabilities and you want to say you are not doing a good

job. but with the wealth that mitt romney has and the economy as it is, saying something like that, not a benefit. my guess is his campaign will say, he is being tough and honest. but that is spin. this is not a ideal thing, we are talking about it now, it will continue to come up, jon huntsman, moving up in new hampshire has already hit romney on using that line. mitt romney is looikly to w llyy to win the primary tomorrow. in a general election he has to sharpen up because the obama team will not miss these kind of opportunities. >> let's look at the polls. the daily tracking poll shows that he lost ten points since iowa but still a favorite. ron paul at 20, which could be the top for him. jon huntsman with momentum, 13, and newt gingrich falling a bit
10:04 am
behind, 11, and rick perry not a factor here. he has not been camp baaigning here, does jon huntsman, seems to have momentum, does he continue to make a move, chris? is that the action right now, the battle for second? >> yes, the story is the battle for second. romney has dropped some, but i don't want to beat him up too much on that. it's tough to maintain support in a crowded primary field where you have a lot of candidates competing nfor the vote. i think the race is for second place. it looks now, santorum will not come close to second, if huntsman can get into second, we may be tacking huntsman momentum. we saw iowa break late, maybe new hampshire will do the same thing. >> thank you, very much. >> thank you. >> tim pawlenty is probably sorry that he dropped out so early is in new hampshire here
10:05 am
as mitt romney's top defender. i caught up with him at a romney event, i asked him about all of today's big new attacks that put romney on the defensive including newt gingrich's attack against romney's work as an investmei investment banker. >> this could have the same impact as romney's ad had on gingrich. >> one thing, how did newt gingrich know about the ad? more importantly, this is an old line of attack that barack obama and the democrats have tried to use against mitt romney for years, which is the experience at bane, and what the record at bane shows is when governor of romney, the successful leader then of bane capital, invested in a number of businesses and some of them made it and some didn't. if you look at the total number of jobs added, it's a net
10:06 am
positive, not a net loss. did some of the companies not make it and have a hard time? yes. but overall, mitt romney's leadership resulted in a large increase in jobs not a decrease in jobs. >> you t'ed up the other point, because mitt romney in the meet the press debate knew the talking points against newt gingrich that he said he nothing to do with and had not even seen? >> well there are many super pac ads and what newt said, he saw one of the ads but he did not see them all. and of course, they have been numerous for and against candidates. >> that gets to a question about h -- he says one thing, the pink slip issue, he suggested that he could identify with people that
10:07 am
were laid off because he once out of school felt he could have gotten a pink slip, the other candidates are riding him on that. when did mitt romney worry about a pink slip? >> well, mitt romney has persuaded a lot of people, he won iowa and he may win new hampshire tomorrow. he has billieen the front-runne the republican contest for many months. i do not think it's fair to say he has not attracted support. he has the most momentum of any candidate in the race so far. he is persuading people and best situated to beat barack obama, clearly. the pink slip issue, mitt romney came out of college and started in an entry level position in his firm. which he described again this morning. when you are a junior perpendicular, new in the door of any company, of course, you will wonder am i going to make it? am i going to be the one laid off? >> he is a millionaire's son, as
10:08 am
ann richards once said about george bush, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, did he ever really worry about a pink slip the way the unemployed and blue collar people have had to and people all across the country? >> for anyone to attack governor romney on these issues is class warfare. that is what barack obama tries to do. pits people that are not as successful against those that were. mitt romney rejects that, he wants to believe in an american where everyone can succeed. and not put people down for being successful. for a candidate to embrace that rhetoric, they are buying into barack obama's class war fare. that is not what republicans do, republicans say we can all live the american dream. >> you coined the phrase obamnicare, now you are his

the debate. tim pawlenty said as a new employee he could worry as every young man that he could be fired. come on. >> i do not think that was the journey through his life worries like middle class folks are worrying. he did say he did not grow up poor, so i've not been on that walk through life. i had a different kind of experience. as you look ahead to a general election, the truth is, president obama is, may try to come at him as a middle class warrior, he is kind of the same kind of leader as well. >> that is fascinating. >> yes, what is interesting now, you have jon huntsman with a bit of momentum, as more of a centerist, trying to play to new hampshire voters. he endorsed debt reduction and then you have the gingrich and santorum fight which is who emerges out of here to say to

south carolina conservatives it's time to force the other guy out of the race. >> this was huntsman trying to point out romney's vulnerablit vulnerablities. he made his move in the debate last night. let's watch. >> and with regards to their ads and as you know, under the law, i cannot direct their ads. the ad i saw said that you had been forced out of the speakership, that was correct. >> it's not true. >> it said that newt sat down with nancy pelosi and argued for a climate change bill. that was correct. anything wrong i'm opposed to. but this is not bean bags. >> romney going after gingrich. but huntsman got a number of perr perrys in there. >> this is the issue to say, look, romney is, a little bit of the mccain play book in new hampshire, put country first. here is romney coming at him.
10:15 am
the other side of the the argument is that huntsman also was working to run for president. that cuts against him. romney is strong, you have other candidates looking for some type of narrative, the question is do they have the time at this point? >> time and money? >> yep. >> david gregory, thanks very much. >> great debate. >> ron paul is postponing an ad in florida but still considering a third party run. my interview with his son, kentucky senator, rand paul coming up next. have a question for me join me on my life web chat. get the latest from new hampshire. but is she eating sugar this week? maybe she wants the all natural, zero calorie stuff. but if you're wrong, you're insinuating she's fat. save yourself. it's only natural.
