another romney victory. as predicted the former massachusetts governor finished first in new hampshire's republican primary dealing a blow to conservatives who had hoped to break his momentum. now it looks like the rest of the field, including last night's runners up, ron paul and jon huntsman need to work fast to catch up. tracie potts has more from new hampshire. good morning to you. >> reporter: veronica, good morning. all of these candidates now say they're moving on to south carolina. in fact, some are already there this morning but now only one can claim victory in two states. >> thank you, new hampshire. >> reporter: mitt romney scored a decisive victory. today he heads to south carolina, focused on president obama. >> we're asking the good people of south carolina to join the citizens of new hampshire and make 2012 the year he runs out of time. >> he certainly had a clear-cut victory but we're nibbling at his heels. >> reporter: ron paul ran strong

among independents and young voters here. jon huntsman calls his third place finish a solid, comfortable position. >> we proved a point, that this state wants its candidates to earn it the old-fashioned way. that's on the ground, handshake by handshake. >> reporter: newt gingrich failed to break into the top three after hammering away at romney but says the conservative south will be different. >> we can create a majority that will shock the country and a majority that will begin to put us back on the right track. it is doable. >> reporter: rick santorum could not replicate his iowa success in the granite state. >> i had a lost folks here, spending a lot of time here and money. we knew it would be tough. >> reporter: he spent zero in new hampshire but has committed to a million to get his message out dunn south. compare that to the nearly 3 1/2 million gingrich plans to spend or the 6 million romney's political action committee already spent in ads for florida and south carolina.

veronica? >> tracie potts in new hampshire. thank you. the obama administration is rejecting claims by syria's president that the deadly violence in his country is the fault of demonstrators. after tuesday's speech by ba bar ad assad. meanwhile, a senior u.n. official told the security council tuesday the level of violence in syria actually went up since arab league monitors arrived last month. some 4 o people are believed to have been killed in just the last three weeks. a scientist working on iran's nuclear program was killed in a bomb blast in tehran. an iranian news agency says a motorcyclist drove up and attached the bomb to the scientist's car using magnets. he worked at a uranium enrichment facility, the same type of attack that's killed two other iranian scientists and wounded a third over the last two years. iran has blamed the u.s. and israel for those bombings.

both countries deny involvement. exactly four months to the day after the september 1th attacks the u.s. started impresidentening what it called enemy combatants at the american naval base in guantanamo bay, cuba. nbc's francis koe reports. >> reporter: today is the ten-year anniversary of the arrival of the first prisoners at guantanamo bay, cuba. it's been controversial since the outset. >> it's humane, it's legal, it's proper. it's skin with the geneva conventions and after a period that will sink in. let there be no doubt. >> reporter: president obama ordered the facility closed in january 2009. >> guantanamo will be closed no later than one year from now. >> reporter: but congressional road blocks slowed the closing and debate continues over the existence of the prison and its

policies. some analysts predict the facility may stay in business for a while. lawmakers cut off funding that would have brought prisoners to the united states for trial. and downed a plan to how's them at a prison in illinois. since the beginning, 779 prisoners have passed through guantana guantanamo, according to the defense department. there are currently 171 detainees being held there. only seven are scheduled for trial and 89 are eligible for release. some former inmates say their time at guantanamo is a dark memory. >> this is an anniversary of tragedy, of pain, of torment, of families being ripped apart. of a dark page in the modern history of humanity. >> reporter: he spent two years at guantanamo before being freed without charge. since then he's formed an organization, caged prisoners, for former detainees.

earlier this month, a defense authorization bill was signed into law that will broaden the military's power over terrorist detainees and will require security guarantees before prisoners can be sent home. among detainees that are rumored to be marked for transfer are 12 taliban detainees who may be transferred to afghan custody as part of a u.s. bid with peace talks with the taliban. francis koe, nbc news. here's your "first look" at some of the other news going on around america today. a coalition of civil and human rights activists joined the chorus of voices. accusations of racism have been levied against the teachers for basing math questions and equations on slavery and slave beatings. a bus passenger's confrontation with police on a california bus turned vial en. moments after she refused to get off the bus she began cursing at them and was then struck.

for you. we hold on to enough cold air that we'll get snow out of this. some areas will start off as snow and transition to ice and rain. a cold shot of air, 18 in billings. final i, winter is returning here. this cold air will race in behind the storm. we get a significant lake-effect snow event and also regular plain old snow in the days ahead. this is mostly thursday, not today, thursday, snow on the backside of the storm as it lingers in the great lakes. chicago right now 3 to 6 inches for you. we could see a bullseye somewhere from madison to lacrosse. as far as new england goes, this looks like it starts tonight. we'll mostly be all know, the higher terrain of ver monday, 6 to 12 inches. great news for the ski areas, the adirondacks and the catskills. maybe a slushy coating to start and changing over to rain areas like boston and province. today, fine travel day. exception being the southeast.

time this week. six iranians were saved from a cargo boat taking on water tuesday. the victims were given flood and medical attention before being turned over to the iranian coast guard. a surprise development at the birth place of the occupy wall street movement. metal barricades have been removed from zuccotti park in new york. police warned they are still not allowed to damp there. oklahoma's ban on islamic sharia law is likely unconstitutional. an appeals court found no evidence that the ban was necessary. the case returns to a lower court. and sobering numbers from the government when it comes to binge drinking. college age drinkers have an average of nine cloik beverages when they get drunk. one in six adults say they binged on booze at least once in the last month. here's your "first look" at wall street. the dow opens april 12462 after adding 69 points yesterday.

the s&p rose 11, the nasdaq jumped 25. taking a look at overseas trading, in tokyo, the nikkei up 25 points. while in hong kong, the hang seng gained 147. a strong earnings outlooks for alcoa helped stocks climb to a five-month high on tuesday. investors' hopes for a strong earnings season were lifted by heavy aluminum demand. chin in's high imports of copper last month helped drive the rest of the material sector higher. caterpillar rose 3%. jp morgan chase added 2%. tiffany and company plunged 10% after slashing its full-year profit forecast. elsewhere, orange juice futures surged a record 10% on news some brazilian imports contain a potentially harmful fungicide. news that fitch ratings does not expect to cut france's aaa credit rating helped ease

won a game. the wizards put an end to the worst start in franchise history. john wahl to mcgee, wiz up 12 at the half. rashard lewis came off the bench with his best game of the year. finished with 15. break up the wiz. they beat the raptors 93-78. kobe bryant got things started with 17 in the first quarter with be finishing with 48. the most points by a player this season. he may be 33 but kobe still got game. the lakers beat phoenix. brandon paul with the kind of night you dream about. career high 43. nailed a three-pointer late in the game for the lead. moments later with a man all over him, he threw up a rainbow and he draened it. brandon paul carried illinois to a 74-72 win. football, raiders surprisingly fired head coach hugh jackson. but then again, is anything the raiders do a surprise. jackson 8-8 after one season

"morning joe" will still be up there this morning. storm is heading that way. the rain and snow won at riff in areas like new hampshire and new england until overnight tonight. you still have 18 hours to go. temperatures are chilly out there this morning. we will keep it mild during the day. clouds willing on the increase. as far as the snow and the rain goes, most of it will hold off to the second half of today. the rain in d.c. expecting in the afternoon hours, philadelphia, probably after dark. new york city won't come in probably until after, you know, maybe 10:00 p.m. or so. areas like buffalo and pittsburgh, you're warm enough initially for just some rain. the snowfall predictions are in the mountainous areas of new england. we get a wintry mix like albany, springfield, north of boston, northern massachusetts will start off with wintry precip and slowly change over to ice or rain. it won't be a significant storm, only for northern new england. the cold air arrives.
