endorsement? >> well, it's nice headlines and it gets people like us talking about it. they said they would not, these group of leaders, would not call on newt gingrich or rick perry to get out of the race. the gingrich forces insist the vote was far more split than the santorum endorsement indicates. and the polling in south carolina shows that newt gingrich not santorum who appears to be the viable consensus conservative other than mitt romney. he is in the low 20s and san p tore um in the mid teens. if you add them up, we have a winning margin, because they are splitting it, and again, look at 2008, hike huckabee, and thompson split the vote and mccain won with 33%. >> and part of the drama of this, the huntsman decision is

. democrats are trying to succeed for president obama. maryland governor o'malley is joining us now from south carolina. thank you so much, governor, thanks for being with us, what is your argument against the romney record, he as a fellow governor has been putting his record forward? >> facts are stubborn things. when he was governor of massachusetts, it ranked 47th in its job creation rate. jobs like mayor and governor, you have to get things done.

you have to do the things that work to create jobs and expand opportunity. that is what democratic governors across the country are doing and that is what president obama is doing. we now have had 15 months in a row of positive job creation, the first time our country has done that since 2005. what mitt romney embraces is the failed policies of the past. those that say, by, you know, pushing through even greater tax cuts for the top 1% that somehow all of that trickles down to job creation, we have seen that doesn't work. his record at bain and as a governor proves he is not a job creator and has no experience in creating jobs. >> part of his argument is that he has been in the private sector, there's though way that you can challenge that he at least has business experience as compared to the president whose background in public policy and

as a state senate. in an anti-washington year, isn't that a talking point for republicans, that would be what the romney campaign would say? >> sure, it's a talking point. but it's a talking point that falls apart when you look at the facts. that same talking point was offered by mitt romney when he campaigned to be governor of massachuset massachusetts, when he became governor of massachusetts, massachusetts sink to being 47th among 50 states when it comes to its rate of job creation, lower under mitt romney's leadership than mississippi and alabama, down in the ranks of a state like louisiana that just lost its major city to a hurricane. when you talk about private sector experience and experience in the business sector, it's important to look at what

exactly did mitt romney do when he was in the private sector, it was not about job creation. >> isn't it a fact that though that romney is, according to everyone in the white house that we talked to, that he is among the republicans the toughest candidate for the president and because you have jon huntsman dropping out, we don't know what will happen to rick perry after south carolina, but this race will be over for mitt romney, most likely, by florida, you'll have for all intents and purposes the republican nominee and he can start working on the general election campaign? >> well, perhaps. and perhaps in a weak field he is the toughest opponent. but i think this race, once we get to the general election, who will help recover the jobs lost in the bush recession and put things in place that we can out educate and out innovate and

and developing now, a retired minnesota couple is among those missing after their cruise ship ran aground friday night. at least six people were killed when the ship ran a ground. michelle is in italy. the tragedy that has taken place and now all fingers are pointing to the ship's captain. what is the latest on this? >>. >> reporter: it's tough for people to hear that it's not the result of an engine room explosion, which was a possibility, that the company is now saying that they believe that it was human error, he decided to take the ship without authorization, off course and bring it closer to one of the islands which meant closer to reeves and to rocks. that he did not follow procedures and that he made mistakes in handling it.

also he is now under investigation, in fact he is in jail under suspicion of manslaughter and abandoning ship, investigators say they saw him on land and people tried to encourage him to going back to the ship while passengers were trying get off. we saw the latest rescue on board was yesterday afternoon. he denies abandoning the ship and said is his navigational routes shows that his route was clear. but the explanation for now why he was doing this was to show, to bring the boat close to the island so that people could get a better look at the ship. >> controversial procedures after the ship, it took hours to get people directed to life boats and the crew did not know where the boats were.

the architect said he did it to fit the room on the statue. now it's directed that within 30 days a revision should be come back with. what is your advice? >> i agree with the president of the united states, the underlying meaning of what this says about dr. king, it should not be overshadowed by anything on the side of the statue. so we agreed with the secretary of the interior well before the dedication that we could come back and revisit the quote and see if it should be changed and what it should be changed too and how soon it should be done. we are waiting for another meeting with the park service, talk with them and meeting with nick benson, the person that carved the words into the side of dr. king's memorial and see

what conclusion we can come up with that best fits this is and make everyone happy, at least try to. >> the original quote was from a speech in 1968 as you know well about two months before dr. king was assassinated and it says, yes, if you want to say that i was a drum major, say i was a drum major for justice and all of the other shallow things will not matter. it's a trophy that he used often in his speeches but it comes from scripture and maya angelo said that this makes him look like an arrogan, twitt. but the problem is that the architect is saying that the longer version will not fit. how do you make it fit?

small town elections where voter fraud has occurred. people have been indicted and convicted, we had a recent indication by our voter registration officials working with the dmv, that people have voted past the time that they should have voted like when they died. so, you know, we do believe that there's examples of that, more importantly, andrea, we believe that the law is on our side, the united states supreme court has issued a ruling that, in the indiana case, that we believe confirms south carolina's ability to put this requirement in place. >> but, senator, what do you say to those that say it's an under the table way to prevent minorities who would be more

likely to support president obama to vote? >> read the majority opinion written in the indiana case and i would ask them to read the federal commission on election reform, chaired by former president carter and former secretary of state baker, that gave great precedent to the idea that public confidence and the integrity of the suspect and the election process was central to, you know, conducting free and open elections. >> and as far as you are concerned you will still challenge this and you think the justice department can be defeat odd thi ed on this? >> i do. it's unfortunate that the justice department is requiring

us to go further when we face a clear well settled opinion in the united states supreme court, but we are willing to take this step, because we believe it within our right to put that type of integrity in the voting process. >> state senator larry martin, thanks for joining us today. >> thank you. >> and mitt romney's rivals have been portraying the devastation of communities and loss of jobs at the hand of bain capital. kim is the bureau chief for the new york times and went to gaffney to uncover the story. what did you find, kim? >> gaffney is a town of about 12,000 people that found itself at the center of this controversy, you know, romney was portrayed as coming in with bain capitol and laying a bunch of people off, and my assignment was to go find how devastating for the town, and most people

did not really remember this plant. certainly the economy is a big deal, unemployment is about 12% in that county, but this particular case with the photo album plant, turn happen out to be nothing, i went everywhere, talked to the chamber of commerce to the local newspaper editors, as many people as i could find, people are not remembering the layoffs that happened in 1992. >> why is this ad so potent, the super pac ad is a devastating portrayal of bain, as you know from being in south carolina, and covering this story, the economy there is, you have twice the unemployment level that new hampshire had, this is a tough time in south carolina, and those economic issues really are going to take hold. >> it's true, you know, whether or not bain caused the devastation of thousands of

lives, i cannot tell you, i was reporting in one town, and it still a big issue in the campaign. but in the small towns in south carolina and i've been around in the countys that had 12% unemployment, the economy matters and it may matter more than religion or other issues, republican voters in south carolina identify as social and conservative republicans, but the economy, you know, it's tough. there are pockets of real prosperity in south carolina is, right around the capitol, amazon has a big distribution plant and to coast in charleston, you have most of the state hurting though. and they want somebody to fix that and it may actually over ride some of the social and religious concerns. that being said, there's still a lot of confusion over that a

mormon is and people were saying what do the mormons believe exactly? there's a concern about that. and again, mixed in, there's a strong feeling among republicans there that president obama is not doing a good job and they want help. they just want help and they want people to stop fighting about it. that is what i found. >> now, which way do you think it will come? i know you have to go back and do more reporting. do you think the evangelical endorsement of santorum help him or newt gingrich and his record in washington and the way he is framing the record of course, and his attacks on bain capital, does that help him, that anger against wall street? >> there was a feeling of resignation about gingrich, there was more excitement, at least in the communities i was in, for mr. santorum.

gingrich has said that this is in fact, as far as gingrich is concerned, the weakest statement by an american president and the biggest act of weakness by any american president in my lifetime, that seems like a tough statement. does that strike you? i mean you served in republican and democratic administrations. this is greatest act of weakness to postpone a military exercise? >> that is a curious statement, he has followed president bush's step toward iran. obama has tried to negotiate with iran, and he has pushed sufficient sanctions on them. he just announced sanctions on iran's central bank.
