in south carolina. ♪ zipitty dooda >> we begin with just a few hours of campaigning left before south carolina voters go to the polls, and the question right now, can newt gingrich emerge as a real contendered to beat mitt romney in the state known for picking presidents? in the final debate it was a raw kas night of confrontation. he took some shots about his personal affairs. >> she says you asked her to enter into an open marriage. would you like to take some time to talk about that? >> no, but i will. to take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary, a significant question in a

presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything i can imagine. >> you may say someone with a personal life as sleazy as newt's he's got a pretty low bar, but the conservative audience ate it up. the rest of the night saw gingrich's rivals launching intensely personal strikes a t the speaker starting with rick santorum who went after newt gingrich's sizable egoand lack of impulse control. >> he handles grandiosity. i don't want a nominee that i have twfigure out what is he gog to say next. that's what i think we're sighing here. >> if santorum spurned it, he went the other way suggesting

defense. >> with all due respect, the people of south carolina are not talking about tax returns. they're not. they're talking about job spending and the economy. i've heard more people wondering why you're not asking about ethics reports and ethics problems. nobody is talking about tax returns. >> deft maneuver. a dose of political poison to your rival stirred gently into a tea party glass of sweet tea. we have a fast brebulous duo to us off today. karen, i have to start with you. many of us might quibble with raising the issue of newt's serial adultery at the beginning of last night's debate. yet, what his second wife says does speak to his character. just to be clear, gingrich is allowed to question mitt romney

on his conduct ot bain capital, but journalists are now allowed to ask him about his inability to be faithful to his wife and former speaker nancy pelosi should never release details? >> that's right. it's okay for newt gingrich to be having an affair while he's attacking the president of the united states for certain behavior. then to divorce his wife while she is on her sick bed. the thing about -- there's a couple of points on this. number one the hypicrosy does matter. he's comfortable when those questions and takes are levelled against his opponents or foes. he was perfectly comfortable dragging that conference out into the daylight with bill clinton and the impeachment.

for him tom say it's despicable without having any remorse for his own behavior is a little hard the take. >> don't forget he's been forgiven by god. >> that's the other part of it with the south carolina audience. i think there is an element in the christian tradition, as a christian, we do believe that people can be forgiven. he's also playing to that, trying to use that to his advantage, but what's interesting, on "morning joe" they had a woman voter who said she's not satisfied with his answers. i think we're going to hear that more from women voters. >> i think his favorite text is where jesus says you should be forgiven 70 times 7. goldie, you and i have talked about some of the repugnant and racially offensive comments, but that doesn't seem to be

disturbing his voters. >> none of this is really disturbing the gop base in south carolina. i said coming out of new hampshire, when people were trumping how large of a lead mitt romney has that it would shrink and it is. that's for a number of reasons. while women represent the majority of democrat voters, men represent the lion share of gop voters. you'll find men who readily empathize with his positions. faith and value does come into question. if you profess i've confessed this sin, then you'll find a bit more forgiveness in the ele electorate. he's been saying these same things for 35 years. this idea that african-americans

are more likely to be on food stamps or lazy or more prone to criminal activity, these are the kind of scripts or song sheets that newt gingrich himself was writing for other candidates as he was trying to get elected in the gop korcongress. >> kwooer hearing that romney's internal polling is suggesting a gender divide. he is holding strong lead amongst women, but gingrich is beating romney among men. why? >> i think women don't like how swarmy he just seems. i'm sorry, looking at the pretty blonde with the helmet hair that doesn't move, many of us have been traded up, had our guy kind of trade up for a younger model. that probably doesn't sit well a lot of people. the other thing to remember in south carolina, you're likely to see, it's really going to be

gingrich and santorum who are competing for the same pool of voters. i think either will take that many away from romney. romney doesn't need to win in south carolina in order to continue his momentum because he's got the money to continue on well past south carolina. >> final question to both of you. is gingrich going to win tomorrow? >> i'm known for going on the record with these kind of things. i think he's going to either win it or be a very, very tight race. this will not be a mitt romney run away race tomorrow. there's too many things at stake. we're talking about faith and values and true conservatives and some of the things that are happening down in what i call the bible belt that favor newt

congress has been back in town for less than a week, and already republican leaders have left for a treat. the purpose, according to one report, to focus on undermining president obama for the rest of the year. after losing the payroll tax fight and helping secure the worst approval rating in history, republicans hope to breathe new life into their confused body politics and stave off an obama second term. sheila jackson lee is a democrat from texas. she joins us now. good afternoon. >> a pleasure to be with you. happy new year to you. >> same to you. everybody needs a break and the christmas period allowed members of congress to enjoy some time at home, but isn't it time now to do something constructive for the country? >> martin, it was time two and three weeks ago. we were in washington, democrats

the first week of january asking for the speaker of the house to return. we had appointed our conferees to move quickly toward the payroll tax conference. we had a deal for a two-month extension. it was a complete breakdown in terms of reniging on the commitment. finally, the better senses prevailed in a two-month extension was accepted. the only extension that could have been achieved, republicans blocked it for a long period of time. democrats came back the first week in january to move the conference along to begin to talk about extended the unemployment tax and the relief for middle class americans and working americans and poor americans for one year.

we have yet to get that accomplished. i hope the american's people message which is documented that says 60% of the american people believe that president obama has tried to work with the republican congress to get things done for america. that's what i believe americans have sent their members of congress, senators and house members to work to do. if you want to be a political consultant, run a campaign, do polling, then i could ask the republican conference to take that up as their responsibility to be political consultants. they're not there. >> there are featured speakers at this republican retreat. they apparently had a break out session titled "the language of 2012. "i want to ask you, what kind of language do you think they are

talking about. >> there many that think governor christi is a straight arrow. i can only imagine when you begin to talk about language and not deeds, and not what you'regoing to do with respect to jobs, how you're going to restore the faith in medicare and medicaid because you're not cutting it, i can only think it's the language of destruction, the language of deviciveness and the language of political consultants. how do we undermine the president of the united states during this election year. i know this is an election year and each party, if you will, trying to win on the basis of the philosophy to move this country forward. to the contrary, however, republicans are in the majority of the house and obstruction in

the senate. we have a responsibility, how we're being paid is to do work for the american people. >> let me play something that you said about the current gop debate on the floor of the house on wednesday. just listen. i think what you said and what i was hoping to run is we find candidates like newt gingrich who simply want to throw fuel and matches on fire to develop sort of an explosiveness in this country that is unnecessary. to suggest that president obama is the food stamp president has underlying suggestions. what did you mean by underlying suggestions? >> these are code words. it's inappropriate. >> did you mean racist? >> let me say that the code words, as far as i'm concerned

words that generate and signify race. comments made by someone other than the president when he was a candidate caused him to make a significant speech on race to say race is a factor in the united states, but i work and will represent all people. here we have newt gingrich, taking the opposite road, if you will. it's i will use race to divide. i will call the president the food stamp president not knowing that food stamps are utilized by our soldiers, utilized by kau kaig caucasians more than african-americans. telling the us a janitor who makes $37,000 would be in a better position to give his job up so that the children of the poor in new york, i think he used the example, the school district latino and african-american can pick up a

broom and work. we know those children should have an opportunity to be an astronaut, scientist. we're not against work. these children want work. they are fighting for summer jobs. that's a code word to, if you will, portray poor children and poor school districts that they have seen no one work legitimately. that they don't have a work ethic and these janitors are overpaid unionized workers who don't have family and not making $37,000 a year. i think mr. newt gingrich should be ashamed of himself and we should not want to win at any cost. let's bring the country together. let's not destroy mr. obama. let's talk about helping the american people. >> thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. next, the president playing crooner. stay with us. ♪ i am so in love with you

raisers last week. he's at one now al the elegant confines of the jefferson hotel. last night was another three in new york city. a very interesting turn of events. jay carney from the presidential podium and everyone wants to take the stress that the president is out on the campaign trail. carney said he does spend a small portion of his time raising money and talking in a rather oblique way of the candidates outing. carney pointing out that the president shouldn't be made a fault that the president doesn't have a primary opponent. a lot of people talk about this billion figure in his war chest. thai think it sounds

we saup w it with 1988 with the michael dukakis campaign and the whispers about john mccain having a black baby. i think he's clever in using this strategy of race-bating to go and get more gop voters on his steam. >> dana, at a campaign event earlier today romney opened the floor to questions from the media. he asked about the polls. the next question was about his tax returns. the third question was about his wealth. the question after that was about his tax returns. for a man who touts his management skills, why is he managing this tax return and wealth talk so badly? explain it to me. >> you wonder why he stayed away from the media for all those months. now he's forced to come out and answer questions. he's a bit out of practice here. he is handling the questions

badly. the problem is there's no good answer. if we were to release the returns and people would see how extraordinarily wealthy he is and how little he's paid in taxes, that's not necessarily a better answer than him equivocating and hemming and hawing here. he's in in al gore trap. he's so worried about saying the wrong things. he's calculating before he says any word that comes out of his mouth and it leads to this mush coming out. it makes the problem worse the it's like this vicious cycle. >> that enhances the idea that he's the plastic, fantastic candidate. >> this is the al gore problem. in trying to fix the problem and filter his words and not say something that will look like any flip-flop, he winds up sayisay

winner, it picks the candidate that will win the white house? what now. we're joined by chairman of the south carolina gop. good afternoon, sir. >> hello, sir. glad to be here. >> i'm doing fine. until a day ago, mitt romney was two for two with a healthy lead in the polls and then we found out rick santorum won and newt gingrich is surging. i want to put you on the spot. who's going to win this tomorrow? >> i'm not picker. i'm just been reiterating what you said. we do pick presidents. we have a 30-year track record. we have a legitimate pattern and our blend of conservative voters have been good tht pain the pas of the picking the nomination. >> you know your state has a reputation of playing dirty when it comes to politics. we heard about the fake cnn breaking news alert about newt

gingrich that was e-mailed to south carolina republicans yesterday. have you heard about this? >> i just heard about it a few minutes ago. this year has seemed a bit tame to me. we saw a lot more of that in year's past. i thought up until that thing it wasn't any of those whisper campaigns or dirty literature drops where people left flyers on the wind shields. i've watched in a long time. it's the rough and tumble ba backyard brawl. it's pretty typical. >> many people would hear you say that and feel embarrassed about how dirty it is down there? >> it's pretty tame. i think those days are gone. it's a backyard brawl. this is a primary vote. when's when the voters vet out and find the best candidate. we want to beat barack obama. our voters are engaged. they are excited.

they're animated and vote tomorrow. they want to replace obama. >> you know south carolina voters better than anyone. you represent the constituents down there. you know the people are very religious, very conservative, very family values based. how is it that a man with three marriages is managing to surge? it seems to me there seems to be a disconnect between what people profess to believe and love, and what they will support. >> i got to tell you, i'm seeing big numbers in everybody's campaign events right now. all the candidates are here in the state. they have been here, been doing big vents. the bigger part is we're evangelical. we're family values oriented but we're also understanding that grace and forgiveness is real.

when somebody says they asked forgiveness or been through tough times -- >> i'm sorry so interrupt you. is that the case when someone repeatedly comes back and repeats the same wrong doing and asks forgiveness again. is there literally endless forgiveness. if he had 25 wives, would visit made any difference? >> i think the interesting thing for republican voters it seems like republican candidates get all the pointed questions. we don't remember obama and hillary getting the pointed questions that we have seen our candidates get. >> i'm sorry. i just can't allow you to say that. if i was given an opportunity to intervie either of those, i would asked them the most pertinent questions. to throw out the question that by asking republican candidates questions is somehow more severe towards them than it is toward democrats is just not true. >> well, it is true.

you know it to be true. >> it's not true, sir. >> the reason the speaker has gotten two standing ovations is not just because the con tent of what he said in those debates, but he went right at the media for saying you're asking these hard questions and people just rose around me both those nights because he's going back against the press for asking things that barack obama never had to answer. >> barack obama was never asked a question about fire brand preacher, the reverend jeremiah wright. >> he got a pass on his cocaine use and reverend wright. they were glossed over, passed over. nothing was asked about how somebody with little experience would pass for presidency. we want to make sure he's the worst one-term president. >> good look with newt gingrich.

supposed to train have been rising according to to a report obtained by the "new york times" soldiers are being killed when an afghan trainee opened fire. now there are reports that french troops are withdrawing altogether. i'm joined by the recipient of the medal of honor. you know the experience yourself serving in vietnam with people from the local community on your left and on your right. that's a challenge, isn't it, for any foreign soldier? >> yes. you're always looking over your shoulder. the worse the situation becomes, the more concerned you are about the indigenous population. as your force erodes over time because you lose people killed and wounded and are replaced by less-experienced people, you begin to get concerned about the people in your unit itself. >> it feels like this has

multipled even more in a place like afghanistan and the fact of the matter is you have this split loyalty. you have issues of integrity. you have individuals who are known to be regular users of drugs within that afghan area. >> and huge corruption too. vietnam is a modern country. it was even then, even though there were huge rural areas. so very much different than a situation in afghanistan, which is firmly rooted in the eighth century not moving quickly forward. and has huge focus internally in small areas. localities that are not national loyalties that are two people. tribes to local afghan leaders. you're not going to be able to trust anybody to have a great deal of support for the nationality when they are focused on local areas.

it's time now to clear the air. newt gingrich performed his usual party piece at last night's debate by attacking the messenger. in this case, moderator john king, one of cnn's most experienced political journalists, who asked newt gingrich about an interview that his second wife had just given to another network. right out of the gate, this is how he responded. >> i am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that. >> now, one can understand why newt gingrich would be so upset by such an early reference to his adultery, but as the crowd roared, he was just getting started. >> i think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract people to run
