>> we begin with newt gingrich lashing out today preparing a new attack ad targeting mitt romney after taking a beating, make that a whopping in last's debate. they are digging into 2008 campaigns. that mike huckabee ad featured in a script for gingrich's new ad sent out today. it's crunch time with republican presidential hopefuls entering the home stretch of the crucial florida primary campaign. after a combative debate that saw mitt romney achieve what many thought impossible.

t momentary muting of newt gingrich. >> the idea that i'm anti-immigrant is repulsive. having differences of opinions does not justify labeling people. >> all i want to do is allow the grandmother to be here legally with some rights to have residency but not citizenship so that he or she can finish their life with dignity within the law. >> our problem is not 11 million grandmothers. our problem is [ applause ] >> big, big applause line for romney there. you know gingrich must have questioned his demand for audien audience participation because when he tried the tried and true strategy of attacking the media wolf blitzer stood his ground. >> we'll talk about it. >> you made an issue of this

this week when you staid he lives in a world of swiss bank and cayman island bank accounts. i didn't say that. you did. >> i'm happy to say that on an interview. this is national debate. >> if you make a series accusation against governor romney like that, you need to explain that. >> you want to try again? >> wouldn't it be nice if people didn't make accusations somewhere elsewhere they weren't willing to defend here. >> mitt romney shoots, he scores, but wait, what about mitt's investmeninvestments. surely he could get in a zinger or two on that. not so much. >> my investments are not made by me. they have been in a blind trust. i know that sounds like an

enormous revelation, but have you checked your own investments. you have investments through mu chul funds that invest in freddie mac. >> romney does have investments in fanny and freddie. he's got so much money, he can't count it. we know mitt is a money man. where is newt, the idea man, the guy who wants to put the 51st state on the moon. if not for president gingrich, the chinese might kcolonyize th moon first. >> i do not want to have gotten there first, saying it doesn't matter. >> i spent 25 years in business. if i had a business executive come to me and say they want to spend a few billion dollars on the moon, i'd say you're fired.

>> that must have felt good. we know how mitt likes to fire people. let's bring in our political panel. karen finney, dana millbank. karen, let me start with you. i have this sink feeling that newt gingrich could be sink beneath his own weight here. what happened to the newt-tron bomb. did it self-imploed in florida? >> i think it did. we're seeing what's been newt's problem all along. he does worse when he's better. when he's doing well, he can't stand it and he lets his guard down and starts talking about colonizing the moon.

one of the most notable things is gingrich did not seem like he came as well prepared and fired up and ready to go as romney did. i think he expected romney to have done his homework. you can tell romney was not only prepared with answers, but he was prepared with answers that would flip the things back on newt and make newt look ridiculous. he did it well. >> mitt romney is a guy who has always done his homework. he did ever bit of homework he ever was assigned. why would he make that assumpti assumpti assumption? >> he's the smartest guy in the race and of course he's going to be president. >> there is that. julian, gingrich today double down on a comment that i find kind of striking. he said an iranian we could lead

to a second holocaust. how do you think a comment like that would play with a sizable jewish electorate? >> i think it makes him more radio active. you saw the point about other languages being ghetto languages. all of these things as karen indicated shows the lack of discipline. the story, i think, last night really was there's been a lot of questions as to whether mitt romney has a glass jaw meaning he couldn't take a punch. i think what he saw last night was an answer to the questions, it's whether he's got a glass fist meaning he couldn't show a punch. i think last night he showed he could throw a punch and he through it well.

the well question is can he throw a knock out punch? even thoep you see the indications down here that mitt will win next tuesday. there's still is beginning to be enough anti-romney sentiment in the campaign and santorum is playing on this that even if he wins on tuesday and in maine and the following three primaries, this thing could still gone on until the end of march. there's that much anti-romney sentiment. all you need is another sheldon adelson to fund a gingrich or someone else or santorum and this thing could go on indefinitely. >> you and i were in london at the same time. you probably remember this, this is one of greatest political quotes at all times. jeffrey howell criticizes heley

and saying being attacked by him is like being attacked by a savage sheep. can mitt romney throw a punch? can he hurt barack obama with a punch? >> i've been wondering who the dead sheep in this race is. let me clarify that for us. romney has a new debate coach. whatever they are paying him, they should double him. that was significant improvement. i suspect that newt was going to collapse under his own weight, if it's okay to say that. he clearly was throwing bombs every which way. it was hard to see how he was going to -- things were going to coalesce in his favor. i'm not sure it's so much romney's performance improving. >> dana, what about the history? we have written newt gingrich

off for dead so many times. he seems to do so much better when we are writing him off. does he have another comeback in him? >> who knows. ultimately it's hard to see where he gets to the nomination. it's true, he is always better in opposition. he was good ousting the democrats for power in the house high pressu . he was better at that than leading the republicans. because he is a bomb thrower as opposed to a leader. it appears he's fading. be damage he's done to the likely nominee, romney is real and probably will be lasting because he's driven the negatives of everybody in the race up now and the public has become disenchanted with a whole lot of them. >> karen, let me talk to you about one of those negatives. there's this question of money and wealth. is the dnc rubbing his hands together. you have romney and gingrich arking over whose blind trust is

blinder and who has any idea how much money he might have. is this helpful? >> absolutely. are you kidding me? i think maybe part of what we're seeing is newt gingrich is a little jealous because he has a bigger blind trust. when push comes to shove, the problem that both of these men would have against barack obama in a general election and frankly, i think the down bout republicans are realizing this. it forces their party into having to defend not only -- it's not about the 1% or the 99%. it's about having wealth, having gotten wealth through the broken system that prevents other people from making money, save money, invest. when you listen to both of them talk, they're so out of touch with how most offous live our lives. mitt romney and his whole i'm a

newt gingrich, the king of bling. the self-admitted grandous candidate may have bitten more than he could shoe. in front of a crowd he said he could have space cost on the moon. it quickly became rocket fuel for his competition. >> i'm not looking for a colony on the moon. i'd rather be rebuilding housing here in the u.s. if i had a business executive come to me and say they want to spend a few billion on a colony i'd say you're fired.

>> i think we should send some politicians to the moon. >> almost speechspeechless. for more on newt's big plans here and in space, i'm joined by karen finney. let's start with you. the moon. explain. >> well, newt gingrich has a long history of these ideas that sound a bit whacky. a lot focus on science and technology and outer space. he had the name newt skywalker. he proposes using a mirror system to light highways. he's talked about using the virtual world second life to get ideas for american public policy. when you put these things together it paints a rather

unflattering picture of a guy who is whacky. you saw his opponents leverage that last night. this is something that could stick. >> i've seen a lot of polls saying that the economy is people's main concern. moon colony has always been very, very low on the list. one wonders why he brings it up now. karen, he has talked in the past of an actual moon colony with thousands of people who could apply for state hood, if they wanted to. is this going to be a red state or a blue state? >> unclear. as somebody tweeted to me last night, anybody who went from here to the moon, they would be illegal imimmigrants. ken is right. when he was speaker, he had some of these whacky ideas.

the problem is two-fold. it makes -- it's one thing to have big ideas, it's another thing to have big ideas that are completely out of realm where our reality is today. here is newt gingrich attacking president obama for the stimulus package, doing things here at home, help kids at college and he wants to spend billions and millions of dollars into going to the moon and starting a colony. it just doesn't track is part of the problem. >> the only thing about it that does, it doesn't really track but it kind of makes sense is he's talking on the space coast. >> of course. >> you want to pander to voters there and you want to promise them jobs that they won't otherwise have. the problem is everybody else can hear. everybody else is listening.

>> he's forgotten that in this day and age, we all know that you talk -- what you said to the folks in iowa versus what you said to the folks in south carolina versus what you said to the folks in the space coast. >> part of the moon program will be developing a cone of silence so that only the voters you want can hear. thank you for joining us. next, why this circular firing squad has one man in washington grinning from ear to ear. stay with us. >> you sounded angry. >> i am angry. i'm angry. i think every american should be angry. how can somebody run a campaign this dishonest and think he's going to have any credibility runs for president. ♪

feeling about the week? >> reporter: the president just did land on the south lawn. you see him walking solo back to the oval office. behind him is the congresswoman from south florida. jack lew as of 10:00 a.m. this morning is now the white house chief of staff. bill daley bid good-bye. the president spent three days traveling. today in detroit the major speech. there was one just after that. he spoke of the american promise and this is what the race is boiling down to. it's two competing narratives and two competing definitions of that promise that the president

is talking about. on the gop side as the president is trying to characterize it as this unbridled capitalism where people get left behind. be rich get richer, the poor get poorer. first the the image that the president is presenting of his program encouraging fair play, a level playing field and a shot at the golden ring. the president has been hitting that hard. he gave them a rousing speech e reprising many of the themes. >> mike, thanks very much. i'm sure it's just a coincidence that the states are states that the democrats welcome him in.

i saw him in south carolina. this was an angry, fired up candidate who came from nowhere, won the primary. what happened? >> here is my theory about newt. there's part that thinks he doesn't want to president. there's part of me that thinks he likes the attention but he doesn't want to be president. the other theory, to use a sports metaphor, there's certain athletes who have a certain amount of natural talent but not technique. without technique, you toenend have a lot of vary blt. if you have a lot of technique you have consistency. newt was relying on his natural, emotional affinity for the emotion of his core audience. hee he was kind of winging it and it came back to bite him last

night. >> what i can't figure out, his technique such as it is works so well in south carolina. fire them up, get them angry. >> it was momentum based. just extend the sports metaphor, it happens when very talented athletes don't have technique, it's hard to convince them to do the things that would acquire it because they say i've been successful. when you have a high school quarterback with terrible throwing mthrow ing mechanics saying you need to throw this way. newt has been winning the debates, what would he think about how to attack romney. he was relying on the same kind of emotional appeal. when he got knocked right back from the beginning, he couldn't feed off the momentum he gained in the beginning. >> he was relying on devine providence to provide an opportunity that never came. what about romney? it wasn't the greatest week. it was good against gingrich.

i'm wondering in terms of the general election. >> we have seen the numbers regress in florida, which is to say the newt bubble that was provided by south carolina v victory has seemed to ebb. second of all, i think romney, the establishment wants romney to be the nominee. the rule both in the literature and political science and just from casual observation, on the republican side is the party establishment gets the nominee it wants. is that rule going to be upset and if it is, it's going to be newt gingrich. we're seeing the structure incentives will produce him. >> i wonder increasingly how any nominee really unites this party. i keep getting e-mails and reading, really conservative

commentators say i'd rather go down with newt than have mitt. >> i think we should all remember how things were on the democrat side in 2008. the conversations i had with just friends screaming at each other over hillary and barack obama. they did end up unifying. i think what ends up unifying them is they really hate barack obama. >> the unifying factor last time was but would we really rather have john mccain and sarah palin. they really hate barack obama. i seem some commentators say if that's what we get, i think we'll go down with romney anyhow. look at the numbers. look at the president's numbers which have improved. >> the economy is improving. the president's numbers are improving. romney has two liabilities. one is the kind of characterture

which is largely true. even when he is defending himself, i have a blind trust and investment manager. >> i have people who do that. >> every single thing he says. he is embraced it as part of his identity. i'm a successful businessman. i'm proud of my success. he seems like mr. 1% because he is mr. 1%. the other thing we saw at the beginning of the debate is newt gingrich is 100% right. he is delighted. that's going to be hung around his neck. the simple mathematical fact is the republican kp not win in the fall unless they do much better than john mccain did with latino voters. >> that doesn't seem to be on the horizon. there will be some farsighted republican leader four years from now, eight years from now who will recognize this basic fact. if they don't, we're talking

wigs. they're going the way of the wigs. >> they are recognizing now, and they are desperately trying to throw the car into reverse and back out of the driveway because marco rubio gave a speech in which he was trying to do an outreach. he gently chided the rhetoric of people in their own party. they do this time and time again. during the primaries when they are in iowa, they are serving up the red meat about the illegals and they have to run away with it in the general. they cannot out run what they said. >> remember what happened to rick perry. his first, if you don't support something like the dream act, you don't have a heart. i think it was a reasonable policy position. i do, but republicans don't. >> john mccain, he was the one that co-sponsored immigration reform. a bill he was forced to disown during the election and saying i wouldn't support it now.

he got creamed among latino voters. he fell into that. he pandered as much as they all have. >> it's been head winds against the president. economy, health care reform not popular. are those head winds abating or is he making more progress against them or one of the other? >> i think mostly their abateab. the balance sheet of households are beginning to repair themselves again. it was very helpful with the recovery act. we're starting to see normal kind of economic growth restore. there's a lot of uncertainty, but the positive for the president is the trend matters more than that absolute level. what's happening in the last six months before the election will

rick perry who had such a rough ride through the gop race is even having trouble, a rough ride getting down from the horse. it's so rough, one wonders if he could beat barack obama to become governor of texas, which he already is. the dallas morning news reports that perry's favor ability at 40% in texas and the president at 43%. this might be a cautionary lesson for some of these republican candidates. goldie, cheryl, welcome. >> thanks for having us. >> goldie, poor rick perry. is this a cautionary tale. are the candidates that were failing not only failing in

their candidacy but doing damage to their own prospects? >> it really is a rough road for republicans these days. they further they tilt to the right, the further of the american mainstream they get. i think republicans took a really bad lesson from 2010 when they took away what they thought was a mandate when really only a slither of the american public went to the polls. i think they took that as a bridge really too far. now you see them saying and doing things that really stand outside of american values. you've got to wonder, how far they will be able to take this. certain the road to victory this coming november is getting a bit more narrow. if they keep this up, they may not get the white houssash a&a e it up. >> president obama is the opposite. his approval numbers are going

up. his disapproval numbers are down. that doesn't steam eem to bode well for the challenger in the fall. >> it's going to be tough. >> in various settings and debate we have heard audiences boo a gay soldier. we've heard them cheer the number of executions in texas. i've always wondered what sort of impact that has on independent voters who are going to decide this election. >> right. well, independent voters surely politically attuned ones are watching. i don't think these issues you just mentioned, the death penalty and openly gay soldier serving in the military are going to be key issues that decide the 2012 election. they won't decide this 2012 election like the economy will. i think the election is all

about the economy. independent voters in particular will be paying attention to that. >> goldie, i'd like to ask you, in general, the happier candidate wins. the candidate who paints the more optimistic vision of a future that people can buy tends to do better than the candidate who always sour and against this and against that. i wonder clearly republican stra strategists know this. they are potentially damaging their candidate. >> no matter how rough our economy is, now matter how far the american people we get beaten, we're still happy warriors. when ronald reagan said it's morning in america, that meant something to us. when you see president barack obama at the stage singing an al

newt gingrich waste d no tie getting back con the campaign trail. >> reporter: good afternoon from florida. if newt gingrich was d disappointed in his debate performance, he did not show it on the plane ride down. he seemed upbeat. while the campaign isn't characterizing this as a victory, they are not calling it a loss. a spokesperson is saying they believe it was a push. speaker gingrich focused on pushing back at mitt romney hitting him in a new ad on three points and things he said

governor romney was untruthful about. specifically, he's going after him on these three things. the first things were not true. the governor mitt romney said he was unaware about the spanish language television ad that's running on the air where he was critical of newt gingrich characterizing spanish as a ghetto language. that was pointed out to him that he did, in fact, approve this message. that was how that ad ended. he's also hitting back on voting. a democrat back in 1992, governor romney said he would vote for a democrat if a republican wasn't in the race. then he's also hitting him about this whole blind trust in that he was unaware of the investments made by the blind trust. speaker gingrich is quoting the hispanic vote. because florida is a winner take all, there's a lot at stake here.

and his candidacy may be dead. is there any chance political insiders are wrong like they have been, oh say, 25 times already this year? >> a chance they are wrong? yeah. i don't know. that could be possible. but look. if you look at the last few days, never mind just the polls. look at the rhetoric. look at what happened just yesterday newt gingrich is talking about how angry he was. starting to call mitt romney dishonest. we heard this before. we have seen this movie before. remember in iowa when restore our future was taking the machine gun to gingrich's campaign and he was fading. that's the rhetoric we heard. if you think that could be the case, then it certainly sounds like that might be the direction things are moving. we have seen some momentum for romney. >> it could be another newt gingrich comeback. this is just what happened in iowa. and what happened was he got d

mad. maybe he's getting mad again. it's hard to tell. >> maybe, but he didn't win in iowa. he's outspent four to one on tv. they haven't gotten the total $6 million in there. allies spent $16 million on ads. gingrich is just about $3.9. it's tough when florida is a state that's all tv and you have all these negative ads blank blanketing the air waives. it's tough to overcome. >> do min co, how well does he have to do to keep going? >> it's very difficult because there's this gap of a month when there isn't a serious primary. ron paul is already in maine and minnesota. they are going to go to nevada with a 26% mormon population that went and voted in the gop
