good morning. i'm richard lui in today for chris jansing. we start with break news. a january surprise. more americans are getting jobs than experts had thought, beating estimates by 75%. 243,000 jobs were added last month, the most in nine months, and the unemployment rate inched down two more notches to 8.3%. that is the lowest point in nearly three years. anita dunn is a senior adviser to president obama. anita, good to see you. there's a lot of reasons for folks to celebrate across the country. manufacturing is spiking, all
7:01 am
ethnic groups also saw a spike in terms of getting more jobs. what do you expect the president to say when he speaks next hour? >> well, richard, thank you for having me on this morning. you know, i think there's much to celebrate. but there's still a great deal of work to do, and the president has been clear with the american people that the hole that was dug by the worst economic recession since the great depression was a deep one and that it's taking its time to get out of ichlt but we are moving in the right direction. this is the 23rd consecutive month of job growth in the private sector. and when you compare that with the over 4 million jobs that were lost the year before the president took office, it's really stunning. but we know we have a long way to go, and i expect you'll hear the president talk about the things we need to do to build an economy that lasts, the progress we've made, but the work we still have to do. >> yeah, yeah. and that comparison, we have a chart on that, anita. it does show how there's a long way to go. but this last month in january is a good jump. you can see here during the bush
7:02 am
administration versus the obama administration where those numbers were in terms of total folks employed. we get a small blip right now. but, you know, there are some issues to be considered as well. bill burton, for instance, tweeting this, quote, somewhere on the campaign trail mitt romney is depressed that more employers did not take part in the joy of firing people last month, end quote. now, mitt romney is running on his experience as a businessman, as you heard, turning the economy around, is what he's been saying. does he still have an argument? >> well, all of the republicans are fundamentally running on a platform that says we should go back to the policies that, quite frankly, created our economic downturn to begin with. and i think whoever it is, whether it's mitt romney or newt gingrich or rick santorum or the republican leadership in the house have been unremittingly negative about the economy and really have based their entire attack on the president on the idea that we should go back to the policies that created the
7:03 am
problems. the president has created -- has offered the american people a very different choice here, which is an economy that's built to last, not one that goes from bubble to bubble, that depends on these little spikes but one built on manufacturing, on revietsallized middle class, on really moving this country forward. so i think he's a little depressed. >> can you talk, on this point here, the corner offices all across the country have said the relationship with the white house hasn't been good. is this a good indication that the things are getting better, that the corner offices are feeling good and will continue to hire? >> you know, i can't speak to the relationship that the corner offices may or may not feel. i can speak to what the administration has done to help the american people and american businesses. the tax cuts for small businesses to encourage them to invest, the work that they've done on an exported agenda to help american companies sell their products overseas, and the your all policies they put in place for investment and encouraging companies to invest in american workers and in the
7:04 am
american economy right here. and thing that we're starting to see those earths to pay off. again, the 23rd consecutive month of private sector job growth and really some evidence here that we're starting to move in the right direction. >> and, anita, i know you hate these sorts of questions. i'm going to ask you anyway. 23 months. let's look forward about ten months. what's the unemployment rate going to be in november, the key re-election date for the president? >> oh, richard, i won't predict unemployment rates anymore. >> i won't tell anybody, i promise. >> it's our secret, right? >> no. i think what's true in november and what's true today is there are two very different choices facing the -- that the candidates are going to present to the american people. one of them the precedence, which is an economy that we build on manufacturingin, on revitalizing the middle class, encouraging children to compete. and then to go back to policies
7:05 am
that dug a deep hole that shed jobs when president bush was in office. in november, i think that's a choice the american people will be asked to make. >> anita dunn, thank you for your time. joining me, jon ralston and r.t. let me start with you, r.t. you heard anita dunn and how they're still necessarily -- they're concerned about how far they have to go. what's your take on this? >> well, the reality is we had a president who inherited an economy in the tank. hi took tough bold moves by helping the economy which made a billion more cars which mitt romney would have let tank. the president's also connecting that to other things like in nevada where people have huge challenges with their homes. he's focused on getting banks to the table. if banks were bailed out, banks
7:06 am
should help homers stay in their homes, especially responsible borrowers. connecting all these things together. >> mayor, you're right. that's certainly one concern. home values, foreclosures. jon let me move to you. the mayor talking about nevada. they're facing the highest unemployment rate 1r, 12.6% rig now. how is that going to play on saturday, and for that matter, november? >> well, i think that's barack obama's biggest problem is the economy in nevada ads you pointed out. 12.6%. sounds pretty high. guess what? it was almost three points higher than that a couple of years ago. it's still
7:07 am
mitt romney says let the foreclosure process go to tend and the whole free market ethos is a problem. they want to know what the government is going to do to help. they don't want to hear let the free market reign. >> so you think there's an opportunity for the gop candidates to take on that message in the way voters would care about more and understand. also, before we get to you, mayor, bring up a point or discus discussion that you had yesterday. you brought up the discussion with mitt romney and his verbal gaffe when he said i'm not concerned about the poor. let's play the clip of you speaking to him. >> jon, wit was a misstatement. i misspoke. i said something that was quite acceptable for a long time.
7:08 am
when you do thousands of interviews, now and then you may get it wrong and i misspoke. >> so he admitted to you, jon. do you think it's over or does this narrative of romney being out of touch continue? >> well, my guess is, michael, that when the democrats and the prezzal campaign play that clip of mitt romney talking about the very poor, they won't play the clip from my program where he said he misspoke and made a misstatement. you know, you can't unring the bell in this world of the internet and youtube and political ads. listen, i was fairly surprised when i did the interview when he came out with that. clearly his campaign, clearly his campaign told him, listen, this is not good for the general narrative of mitt romney, especially, guess what? a few minutes before he did what? got endorsed by donald trump. >> speaking of which. speaking of which. exactly, jon. i'll move to r.t. here. it was definitely las vegas all over. donald trump coming out, endorsing mitt romney. he had the nice pomp and
7:09 am
circumstance. in fact, let's play a little bit of that. >> mitt is tough, he's smart. he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love. so, governor romney, go out and get them. you can do it. >> thank you. there are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life. >> so, r.t., the dnc coming up pretty quickly with that ad looking how a billionaire was endorsing a millionaire in so many words. pretty interesting job these days? >> mitt romney is not making gafs. he's telling us what he believes and he's completely out of touch with the american people. ite knows coincidence that the president came out with work on the foreclosure prevention. he's been doing that since he took office and inherited the economy in the tank. i can point to my city and cities around the country who are in their homes because of president obama. he sai
7:10 am
mitt romney said, quote/unquote, let it work itself out. we need a president who's really going to stand up from day one and that's what the president has done, and we don't need to go to the bad old days that donald trump and mitt romney have done well at but the rest of america need as president who's going to stay with them. >> minneapolis mayor r.t. rybak, always great to see you and jon ralston as well. thank you. >> richard, sorry for screwing up your name. i need more coffee. >> you can call me michael any time. >> i need more coffee. >> a strong report from the secretary of defitness. israel is considering attacking iranian nuclear sights. let's get right to chief correspondent richard enzbel. he's live in tel aviv. richard, what's the time line you're hearing at this moment? >> reporter: this is a theoretical time line and i think the goal of the estimate of the defense secretary is to
7:11 am
push back the timeline. u.s. officials, particularly pentagon officials, have been telling nbc news they are increasingly worried that israel might carry out a unilateral strike on iran's nuclear sites sometime in the spring. when exactly is a subject of debate. obviously it would be a secret unannounced attack, but people have been talking about april, may, perhaps june or july. and the united states has been saying to israel, don't do this, allow international sanctions to work and don't provoke a regional crisis, which could become a global crisis and certainly an economic crisis with the price of barrel of oil going according to one analyst we spoke to from $200 a barrel to pick a number. >> wow. and, richard, you're also traching this story. you're hearing two americans were kidnapped in egypt. is the state department still working to confirm their citizenship. what can you tell us about that?
7:12 am
>> reporter: we've been told two americans, and their identities were confirmed by hotel management, so the state department would probably have better information than the hotel managers, but we're told five americans were initially stopped oen the road in the sinai while they were traveling between the st. katherine's monastery and the resort area, the diving area of shar mel sheikh, and as they were traveling they were stopped by local bedouins. two americans were taken along with their tour guide and the local police chief in sinai is trying to get all the different tribal leaders, bedouin tribal leaders together and work out some negotiated settlement. the good news is the police chief says he has been in touch with the major tribal leaders, including, we believe, the tribes that are holding these americans, but no word if they have been released. it is not -- or it does not appear, however, to be a kind of

7:14 am
ramp. it's not but plowed. snow packed and snow-covered. i think a lot of folks have thrown in the towel saying let 's make it a three-day weekend. last night they decided to make it a snow day today. out at the airport, big-time cancellations, richard. nearly 450 flights have been canceled. out of a total of 1,700, that's a pretty good chunk. delays getting out or in are averaging two hours ago. a full complement of snow plows across the area. the only downside on the storm it's the plains and the foothills. in fact, some of the foothills west of boulder have seen over two feet of snow with snowfall rates over 2 inches an hour. but once you get over the continental divide, the snow pretty much cuts off, richard. that means most of the ski resorts will miss out on this big dump of powder, and it's's powdery with temperatures in the 20s. >> the divide continues to grow
