detail with great expertise short shortly. first, let's talk about what is going on in the jobless world and in the unemployment world. we have new numbers from president obama -- from the bureau of labor statistics saying it went down, it's down to 8.3% from 8.5% let's hear what the president had to say. >> the economy is growing stronger and the recovery is speeding up and we have to do everything in our power to keep it going. now is not the time for self inflicted wounds to our economy. now is the time for action. so i want to send a clear message to congress. do not slow down the recovery

that we are on. don't muck it up. keep it moving in the right direction. >> don't muck it up, perhaps he would have used sharper language were he not on television. ben i want to go to you first. what do you make of the president wrapping his arms around the positive numbers and also, if we are talking about veterans a proposal to create for jobs for veterans and the likelihood that it will pass congress. >> nothing will pass congress that he wants to pass. it's good news throughout the report though. you have the hourly work week going up, you have wages going up, that is a sign that the economy will keep growing. the decrease of the unemployment rate is due to people getting jobs. this is good news and he is on a glide path to 8% of
9:02 am
unemployment, which is the magic number. >> of course, that contradicts what the cbo report says, they say that the unemployment will be around 9%, that goiis going come back to haunt him. for him to say he is -- >> the fact of the matter is these are the best unemployment numbers for three years not the last 12. >> let look at the trend lines that is a good sag way to the graphics we have showing the deceasing unemployment rate. >> the cbo nine % number is based on a base lane under which unemployment numbers are not extended.
9:03 am
people are misunderstanding what the cbo number is, it's not a prediction that we are going to 9%, it's if we do nothing. >> a lot of the cbo numbers are predicated on ifs. i want to bring in a person that does not have a lot of ifs, but declaretive sentences. hello jim, thanks for coming to the program. >> how are you? >> i'm great, i'm great, we are happy to have you on the show. you had an article in the hometown paper yesterday saying that the outlook for the administration may be a little gloomier than we would think than based on the president's rhetoric today. tell me in terms of the number what the white house is looking at these days? >> there's three different pieces, the unemployment data, which no doubt was good for them. but when you look at thei itcbo
9:04 am
report, others, there's a good chance that if it in the mid-eights that was bad news for the white house. the white house feels if it at 8.5% or above, it will be hard if not impossible to win back independents. the other two important pieces are money and his performance in swing states. that gallup poll about three or four days ago that looked at the swing states, the 12 states that either party could realistically win, they are up for grabs, you have mitt romney in the middle of the nasty republican party, running even or beating the president in those states, that is bad news. you couple that with other data that shows his favorable rating in 2011 was lower in those states than it was in 2010, and we would have said that obama will clean republicans clocks
9:05 am
when it comes to fundraising. that is no longer clear to me. it seems that romney, the super pacs and those rich people that are funding these super pac, they can compete and maybe beat obama when it comes to fundraising. he had a good state of tunion speech and the numbers are wobbling month to month, the totality of those, those are reasons for pause and concern. >> jim, we certainly want to unpack those fundraising numbers more later on i want to focus on the swing voters and how the president is appealing to them. jonathan i want your thoughts on this. he is talking today about the veterans bill, it's not going to anywhere, but it's part of the white house strategy saying he is pro active and putting policy out there. regardless, he is still fighting. you i guess the question is though, if you are an independent voter, does it
9:06 am
resonate, are you listening anymore? is it a compelling argument? >> i don't know if swing voters think any of it is doa, we know it because we are living and breathing it every minute and ever day and hour. i think given what jim said, i agree with everything that jim said, i just wonder if republican voters watching the process and the zaneyness that is happening, will they entrust their family's economic security and future to someone who while they might be angry that the president has not been able to get the economy moving in the way they want it -- in the direction they want it to move in, are they going to go -- are they going to leave the guy they are with for someone they are just uncomfortable with and right now it's not clear to me that the republicans are going nominate a candidate who will resonate, connect with the
9:07 am
american people. >> you know i must be a resident alien here, i do not see the doa, i just don't get it. i believe the economy and unemployment numbers continuing to trend down, maybe not barrelli barrelling but going to a positive trend. the people are seeing this around them. i talked to people last night and they said building is up in my area and i can go to my grocery store and afford my food. people that are real, and saying how do i feel are looking at this information and saying it not bleak and it not 's not doa this president continues to be forceful, he will make progress. >> jim had great stats, the debt, he pointed out that according to the cbo report, if things keep going the way they are we will top $1 trillion in debt this year.
9:08 am
we cannot have that. president obama said three years ago if the economy is not fixed by the end of his administration he is in trouble. these independent voters and these swing states, if they do not have jobs and their neighbors don't have jobs and their house is still underwater, they are going to go with someone different. >> we have to go back. the counter to that argument is i put a bargain on the table and john boehner moved away. and these republicans i'm running against want to keep all the tax cuts for the wealthy that initialliy blew up the deficit. he does not care about the doa argument. we have a good economy and it would get better if these guys in washington would do something. >> jim, i want to take you in here, we have to go to break but

just a few muns ago the president finished speaking about jobs and the economy, looking forward to what he hopes will be a bullish 2012. we have the wonderful jim with us, jim, we did not get to get you in in the last segment, but obama has a teflon piece of legislation, insofar -- maybe not teflon, it's magnetic, it's money for veterans to be first
9:13 am
respond responders. you would think the president, we know he is putting the message out here, why doesn't i take it and really fight for it. the assumption is it's just another piece of legislation that he is putting out there to show he is fighting for the middle class, if that message is resonating like it seems to be, why not make more of a fight around it? >> the reason that they are talking about it now is because they are going to. listen, everything in this town is done for politics. so you know, when people get ruffled feathers saying it politics everything is about that. what the white house wants to do is put republicans in the difficult position i think throughout this year on capitol hill on having to vote against measures that would be popular to specific segments whether it's hispanics or younger people or veterans.
9:14 am
they can find targeted ways of doing it because republicans are so controlled by the tea party, they are here to fight the growth of government, so they want to oppose most spending initiatives and that creates a nice political box for obama to put republicans in. >> and adding to that box, it's not that the president is proposing things that are popular with mom and apple pie, he is proposing things in the past that had bipartisan support that came from republicans. so it's not like he is pushing a crazy left wing agenda and congress is resisting him, he is pushing things that are spauupp on capitol hill. >> this is a poll tested idea and the optics of the news conference he had was beautiful. he was at a fire station and who can say no to veterans and
9:15 am
firefighters, this is a win-win situation. >> we were talking before the break, do you think that there's consensus 20 boehner aai -- bet and cantor? >> i would like to think, based on what we are hearing that boehner has to talk to cantor and say, sometimes you have to go along to get along. there has to be some of that or nothing gets accomplishe eed >> there's a big problem in the republican party that they do not have a clear leading voice right now, they have the republican primaries going on, and it an undecided contest, who comes from that will be the spokesm spok spo spokesman more the republican party. the house has a boehner/cantor dynamic and they are not sure what to do. there's not a clear narrative
9:16 am
voice coming from the republican party. >> another interesting component about the obama speech today, the presidency has become small in some ways, small compared to the first year in office. when they were talking with cap and trade and trying to save the economy and health care, and now they are talking about rifle shot pieces of legislation and his idea in the state of the union of having higher taxes on people making over a million dollars. that is not a transformative piece of legislation. looking like bill clinton. he ran into trouble and tried to find little pieces of legislation. >> that is strategy though, i want to echo your comments you are right. the president and administration are being more strategic of how they get through a republican driven congress that will not allow them affect change.
9:17 am
that is smart quite frankly at the end of the day, strategy for the election year, if he does not seize this moment, it's a miss opportunity for this president. >> and jim said it's not a big initiative like health care and obama care, it's a big bomb, and he does not -- >> well, some of us do not think it a big bomb, jim i want to get you back in here. in terms of fundraising, obama we have been hearing about a $1 billion war chest, but it's not necessarily that big or will get that big. catch on hand, obama has $30 million more than mitt romney i wonder to what degree he can build up the money making machine with this small war message? >> president obama was like we do not like the outside groups or super pacs and then they realize that donors like them
9:18 am
and now they want them to give money and donors are saying you were saying how evil it was to put money. and business men want to feed obama and putting in 5, 10, $20 million, when you take the coke brothers and super pacs and this web of wealthy people that romney knows, that's a lot of money. and finally business men are starting to put money back into the political system like they used to when soft money was allowed and for democrats that is troubling. because money does not buy an election but it helps. >> money does not hurt. the understatement of the hour. jim thank you for joining us, we look forward to more of your wisdom on future takes. >> be good, see you. >> the susan g. komen
