we want to apologize for the recent decisions that cast doubt on our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives. we do not want our mission marred or affected by politics. joining me now is barbara boxer, she has joined with our senators and objecting to the komen decisi decision yesterday. in looking at the wording from komen today, do you think it's a clear cut reversal or is it simply something to get past the immediate controversy? >> oh, i think it's a reversal and i'm very happy. and i think what happened today is that women's health triumphed over right-wing politics and the message here is very broad, it's not just about this huge issue, that by the way i thought you
10:02 am
did such an interesting interview with the ambassador yesterday which helped bring this about, i must say. health care should never be politicized from any side. i have to tell you that once we get past this, and this has past, you cannot believe what is going on in the congress today. there's almost hand to hand combat over the issue of birth control going on and i thought that was resolved in the '60s, we have to make sure that the fact that women have access to birth control stands. the speaker of the house has gotten involved and marco rubio has gotten involved and would drive a loophole in there. women's health is under attack and we are at battle here. >> let me play you a bit of the

interview, i was trying to press nancy brinker to the reason for this and some of it was of because of the so-called investigation cliff stearns. >> investigation is not the only issue, in 2010, we set about setting excellence in our groups, community and science grants putting metrics and outcomes and measures to them so we can translate all the science that we funded over 30 years. many of the grants we were doing with planned parenthood do not meet new standards of criteria for how we can measure our results and effectiveness in communities. >> senator boxer that whole issue was notably missing. that was noticeably missing from her explanation, the statement today. >> andrea, as i told your viewers yesterday, i was not born yesterday. and that was a trumped up

women not united states senate and we are so dedicated with our male colleagues to say we are not going to let this clock be turned back. we are just not going there and we are going to stand up for women health and i think when history is written on this, in the not too distant future, social media played a role. your spokes person said it was due to an investigation, we know it was a sham investigation, it was a witch hunt. you are doomed, that was not to be. >> senator barbara boxer, thank you very much, thank you for everything that you have done on this, and we will stay on it. jeffrey goldberg that has the komen documents that give the talking points on the defunding decision that was reversed and ruth of the washington post. jeff to you first. people on twitter and elsewhere are crediting you and the work

that you did on atlantic media in the last 24 hours with unearthing a lot of the detail. let's talk about the stated reasons and the hiring of contain karen handle, i take it all back to that as well. i keep wondering why susan g. komen who had done such, a job since 1982 of walking -- why would they hire this opponent of planned parenthood who had -- planned parenthood has been a partner of komens for decades. >> you can support komen and be against abortion, that is fine. >> right. >> it's my impression that when she came on, former governoral candidate who is against planned parenthood, when she came on they started moving this question and arguing this question, should we give money to planned parenthood. and what happened was, they
10:07 am
realized that they could not come out and say we are cutting planned parenthood because we disagree with their position on abortion. so they created a rule, any group that is under investigation cannot get money from us, but, of course, if you ask, they fund 2,000 organizations each yoear and on fit that bill. so they created fog to put them out of the picture. and now they are back in the picture. >> and you pushed through that. the bigger force for susan g. komen, many of us have been involved with the organization for years, now what given to the black eye to the pink ribbon? >> i will add to that, there's a lot of tarnish on the pink, this is an organization that had as good a brand as you can imagine, they own today color pink, you would see the marchers and you

10:09 am
we are about breast cancer. >> let me play nancy brinker to that point talking about the politics. >> i'm troubled that it been labeled as political. this is not a political decision. we operate from one set of of standards every day and it is to our mission. and if we do not advance and revise and make grants that meet the mission and bring real care to vulnerable populations we are not doing our job. >> it hard to put the genie back in t in the bottle, can they regain their footing? >> probably yes. it was predictable that they would reverse course so quickly. the good thing that you can say is that it did not happen -- too bad that it happened because they should have thought it

10:15 am
in the start of the recession and we are digging out of it and the data coming in, suggests that we are pointed in a good direction, i think the president's actions have helped. i think an important step to continue the momentum would be for the congress to extend the payroll tax cut as was said in the state of the union, to do it without drama or delay. >> do you have any real concerns given the cbo warnings this week that unemployment was going to bounce back up and that the economy will grow as a far slower place than previously expected and that the white house projects? >> the economy is certainly facing a lot of head winds. it's a direct result of the cris crisis, itself, we have seen

10:17 am
to see losses of local government jobs, in particular teachers, it was proposed in the american job act to fund schools to help retain teachers and help cities keep firefighters and policemen on the payroll. what we are seeing, partly related to the financial crisis and the loss of property tax revenue, that the local areas are having a lot of trouble, so, to continue to momentum i think providing more support for schools to retain teachers would be helpful. >> and you may have eluded to this, is there anything that keeps you up at night? an unforeseen circumstance that scares the heck out of you, gree france or the strait of hormuz, what would become a nightmare for you? >> recovery worldwide is fragile and we are connect globally.

it effects us, 20% of our eximportant e exports go to europe, we need to ensure against problems that might be down the road which, again, as i mentioned we get a lot of bang from the buck from extending unemployment benefits, people unemployed will go out and spend the money and that will increase demand here and longer term, we need to take steps so the economy is not so subject to the boom and bust cycle that we have seen before, and that is why the president built out a -- laid out a plan for strengthening manufacturing and developing more domestic energy and investing in the skills of the american workforce. >> dr. kruger, great to see you. thank you very much, the first of what i hope to be many interviews on our program. >> nice to be with you. >> and greg is the u.s. economics editor here at the table. greg, some interesting data inside the numbers for one

thing, black unemployment really took a drop. i mean, it's been so high, 15% plus, let take a look at those numbers and also the effect on african american teenagers, the under employed and those that have just really been left untouched by the recovery. >> so african americans and teen anyone e a angers, the african american unemployment rate went high, it went up 7% or 8% points, double the population as a whole. it's good to see it is coming down, but it's well above prerecession levels with a lot of ground to make up there and that is true for the teenage unemployment rate. >> which has been mid 40%. >> somewhat less for the overall population. ? more than half of african american teenagers under employed. you tweeted today, these numbers
10:20 am
were good enough that you tweeted i'm beginning to wonder if the jobs issue will fade a bit as the number one election issue. >> do you feel it will fade? >> it seems that it will fade, when our polls go out, we find that 40% of people call it the number one issue, nothing else comes close. that said, as the economy gets better, what you may see is that while it does not turn into an asset for barack obama, it's a flow of information. people begin to think about other things and what might those other things be, could they be national security or domestic policy issues? i don't think that we should sugar coat this, the president is in a deep jobs hole. he may have dugout of that hole, just as bush did in 2004. >> greg, thank you so much. and up next, right here, new york mayor , michael bloomberg,

that let people buy guns when federal law says you should not. unfortunately the gun background check system has flaws in it. too many people sell guns privately and while they are not supposed to sell to those who could not pass a background check, they are not required to do one, and it would be easy to have gun dealers do that background check for them. we had a congress woman shot nine months ago, there about, gabby giffords, she is on her way to recovery but has a long way to go. if that does not make congress realize, everyone, even congress people are vulnerable here i don't know what will. 80% of all gun owners think we should have restrictions.
