two young's boys. it happened after the judge denied custody. family members say the boys were finally beginning to talk about what happened the night their mom disappeared. one of the family's lawyers said the 7-year-old talked about seeing his mom in the trunk of the family's car. her brother-in-law speculated that may be why josh powell took the action he did. >> i imagine that part of josh's motivation, what could he doe to hide that story to avoid having to deal with the consequences of things he had done. what's the latest from that scene? >> reporter: there's been a lot of speculation about why josh powell may have committed this double murder/suicide. among many of that speculation coming from families and lawyers. they say josh powell was feeling a lot of pressure from the west valley police department.

they were getting ready to press some criminal charges. he wrote that chilling three word e-mail to his lawyer just minutes before the explosion. it read, i'm sorry, good-bye. that e-mail sent to his lawyer and other close friends. police are trying to piece together this investigation and what happened here. we can tell you a social worker brought his two young children, to josh powell's home. she knocked on the door. the boys went inside. he forced the social worker outside of the home. she's supposed to be there for the scheduled visitations. since she could smell gas in the air, she called 911. moments later the home exploded. there was nothing they could do to save the three people inside. police are on their way out here

minutes earlier and get to school on time. we've done all the little tricks to try to make it happen. with three little ones that are all going to the same school and going in the same car, it's hard to get everybody heading in the right direction. it's like herding cats. >> other parents do it. other parents with maybe more children. >> it's a legitimate issue. we're working towards it, but the issue is whether it's criminal conduct. >> that is the larger issue, but i wanted to set the stage at home if you needed to switch to insignificant oatmeal. this is about you being drag into court. but you're expected to go into court. if the school says you're disrupting the setting by showing up that many times late, what do you believe should be the solution here? >> well, i grew up in upstate new york where they would handle these things in a more basic way

of having you spend time in detention or having you spend with the principal. i just don't think holding the parents criminally responsible is the answer. >> did they come to you on prior occasions and say we have a problem here? you need to get them to school on time. >> they did. >> it didn't work right because they kept being late. >> again, we're not perfect people and our kids are not perfect and the school system is not perfect either. we think there are many other things more important they should be focusing on. the real troubling part of this is the virginia statutes don't permit any of this talk about truancy. >> we'll see what happens with you next month. i can say i wish you were my dad because my mother was cracking
