now of course i would say, need those wins to push back on a story line from last week with the three races he lost last tuesday, it gets him to a point where he does not face a terrible storiy line that he is losing support. but santorum is the momentum candidate. cpac will not change that much for romney. we are talking less than 10,000 votes cast in that contest. this is not hundred offis of thousands of people sounding off. romney had has a problem on his conservative right. no secret, he has had it since the start. the question is, and it's been a long, santorum is the leading competer, but can a divided vote beat romney? you know, i do not know the answer to that. you know, what we do not know the answer to is, is newt in it

>> good afternoon, we are learning new information from the coroner's office. they held a press conference late this morning and they released a few more details. they do not want to speculate on the cause of death. we know she was found in a bath tub inside the hotel behind me, they believe she died sometime that afternoon and that the autopsy is complete but the toxicology reports are not back for a month or two. there's been speculation that pills, anti-anxiety pills may have been mixed with alcohol the night she died. but they are waiting for the toxicology reports to come back. she had her issues with drugs in the past, admit thing to using cocaine and marijuana and prescription pills. she went through several years where she was using drugs every

american women. >> exactly. she was such a role model, she was polished and glamerous, she was this nation's diane a ross, she had an amazing voice that crossed over. she was a pop icon. she never lost touch with her roots. from the gospel church or r and b, she had this larger than life image, she was a great performer. she made great video and then she was a movie star. you know, her role in "waiting to exhail" and "bodyguard," groups of women in "waiting to exhail," rushed to see this women. >> white women related to that and we all had parties to go see it and see it on video then. >> exactly. and then, the music from that movie just moved everyone.

and then when she was in "the bodyguard" and "preacher's" wife, "cinderella," i know her great friend and partner, debra martin chase, she worked on "sparkle," i know she is devastated. she worked with her for many years. she was a huge talent and just so important to the world. i mean, people all over the world knew her and loved her voice and her music will live on. but it reminds me of the death of michael jackson, three days before the b.e.t awards. so my heart goes out to her family and daughter, everyone who knew and loved her and a lot of those people have been together this weekend. >> one final question, i know time is short, i was struck by listening to an interview by jennifer hudson which she said

that when she was down and out and worried about losing her home, that whitney houston reached out the her and invited to help promote her and lift her up again. that is a side that we do not see about the super stars. >> right, she had a big heart. she was close to people. as i said, she didn't forget about her roots. wherever i saw her, she gave me a big hug, she showed up when we asked her to and you know, she didn't fit the model of a classic dciva, she had a great n stage presence, but she was a regular human being. that is one of the things that we have to remember about our super stars, is that they are human and we have to understand that aspect. >> debra lee, thanks for sharing. >> thank you. >> i know a difficult time. >> thank you very much. >> up next, the politico briefing, the santorum strategy

in today's political briefing, santorum is trying turn the republican contest to a 2-man race against we have -- in fact, it's jim. >> itbeen a long time. >> they pulled a switch on me. it's jim. moving on up and moving on. it's a rust belt strategy, is it not? how does he think he will derail mitt romney in michigan, which is his birth state, on february 28th and then on super tuesday this ohio? >> i think with the same message that you used last week. the demographics look good for him in michigan. a lot of conservatives that are with his message.

what he is trying do is unite conservatives around his candidacy, much like newt gingrich tried to do unsuccessfully the previous month. saying i'm the alternative. the conservative alternative mitt romney. >> is it risky to discount newt gingrich and ron paul? i mean, he can try to frame this as a two-man race, but as long as they are in the race, he does not have a clear shot. >> there's a risk and all four will probably stick around for a while which works to romney's favor, because conservatives are not that happy with mitt romney but they have not found an alternative that they are all willing to rally around, so rick n santorum has to say, please get out, please get out to newt gingrich. and neither of them is getting out, because everyone thinks it's a long process that is w winnable for any of of the four. >> what about romney? does he go negative against

santorum in michigan or does he veer toward the positive economic message with the big speech he is planning? >> well the past is usually a good indicator of how people will perform in the future. romney goes negative when he is in trouble. often through the super pac that is affiliated with his campaign and they try to tear down the opponent. did it effectively against newt gingrich in iowa and again effectively against him in florida. can they take that same tactic and tear town rick santorum. whose favorable ratings are pretty good in polls. but is there as much material to work with. with santorum, there's material but i don't think that as powerful of material for the romney ad makers to work with as gingrich. >> it's risky to go ever a conservative, because that is their weakest point as well. thank you jim.

about the president's claims and republican claims, both sides trying to claim the moral high ground here, who is right? >> unfortunately we are not off to it being a year of responsible lugga responsible budgeting, there were not high expectations for the president's budget, i'm afraid, and he probably met it. there's good things in it. there are real spending reduction ares in health care and that is the most important area to focus on and there are important revenue increases but the budget does not get us close to where we need to go. it's serious year in terms of bringing down the debt and do so in a way that helps with the economy to help with economic recovery. they used too many gimmicks, and were not aggressive enough in the savings and the areas that they need to be. in the end, if we do not start talking realistically of what we

need to, it will ignore the issues that we have to face. >> one of the things that the president had to say over in virginia on the warren buffett tax cut. >> warren buffett pay as lower tax rate than his secretary. it does not make sense. i do not need a tax break. we do not need to provide additional tax cuts for folks that are doing really, really, really, well. >> but the fact is the warren buffett tax increase would not do anything. >> it's a serious problem to say we have growing income in equality, let's think about making the tax code more progressive. that should be on the table. but we have to say, there's not enough revenue from billionaires and millionaires to loclose the

gap but we have to look at broader entitlement reform. while they talk about health care, it's not enough. social security is nowhere to be heard of from either side. we are skirting the hard choices and the longer we do it, the greater the risks that we do not set up a mandate during elections, to do something afterwards. we should not be taking a year off and ignoring the problem, we should be focusing on getting a deal done now. his budget has good things but not getting us where we need to go. >> here is the senate leader, mitch making his points. >> the senate has not passed a budget even though the law requires it. the only budget that will be passed is the house passed budget, i'll present it so he

will have a chance to get a vote on it. >> is that more gamesmanship. it's showing a contrast, but we are stressing that the budget process doesn't really work too well. all you have to do is look at our huge deficits and debt, and knows that it does not get us where we need to go. and and there's many years that we do not pass a budget resolution and our appropriations are put together in a big resolution. we know the process is broken t way we budget in the country is not getting us where we need to go. what we need right now, more than just a budget resolution coming out of congress, it's a budget deal. it's the kind of summet we had in the past. we need all parties, roll up their sleeves and sit down and come up with a plan to save trillions of to get our debt levels back to where they need to be. and they will be plenty of gamesmanship about whose fault

it is. but we need specifics of thousahow to fix it and the ability for compromise. >> what you say to those that say, including the fed, saying that we need to postpone real deficit reduction and not handle it right now because the economy is too fragile and it could jeopardize the economy. >> i agree we need a plan that gives us time for the recovery to take hold and grow, but it's not going to be a real and robust recovery unless we put in place now the measures that are going to be bringing our debt levels back down, the chairman of the fed said, you need a ten-year plan, give yourself fiscal space up front to allow the recovery to grow, but let's get the changes on the books and phase them in gradually.

they slid close to defaulting on their loan, the euro zone wants measures passed before helping. the measures were passed last night and that is what they wanted them to do but the people of greece think that it's unnecessary sacrifice, they hit the streets last night and it became more violent than it has been in years. you saw violence within these 10s of thousands of protesters taking on police, they sit them with bottrocks and dozens or buildings were in flames. some of them historic buildings like you mentioned. this country is really reeling, the economy is reeling, we spoke with a member of parliament that said it's not just about fiscal economy, it's about restructuring the entire economy and that is not

andrea? >> stephanie, there's a difference between the germans and their lifestyle and monetary policies and the greeks and the complaint is that the greek dos n -- greeks do not pay taxes and have a safety net and it's not toller able if they are going to be bailed out by germany. >> the perspective from the people on the ground, the people that are so angry. they are under going a economic occupation and they blame germany for that. you are seeing deep seeded resentment that goes back to world war ii in some cases they feel they are being told what to do and they resent resent it.

her daughter was rushed to the hospital following her mother's death. in the hour, a reaction on president obama's budget. the president is preparing for another big battle over the bush tax cut, saying that the congress needs to pass an extension of the payroll tax cut without drama or delay. right now, this is senator barasso. >> i believe this president has abandon his role as leader of this nation by not being honest with the american people about with the significance of the national debt. and that is why, somebody asked me if this budget was dead on arrival and i said no, it's not dead on arrival, it's debt on arrival. >> first of all, they renamed your budget, debt on arrival. what is your response to that? >> i think the president has put

forward today a balanced budget, balanced in two ways, first of all, the president invests, and makes immediate investments in job creation, starteding with making the payroll tax cut continues, the president has proposals to put americans back to work, to modernize the cycl s -- the schools and we have year over year deficit reduction leading to a stable debt to gdp ratio, so it's balanced in that we have immediate job creation and then we had deficit reduction and the deficit reduction itself is done in a balanced way. $2.50 for every new dollar of revenue. we hope congress takes it seriously and passes it's into law soon.

>> some of the other critics though, maya i was just interviewing, whom you know well, says that it does not seriously really attack the long-term problems. that you do not have to do it this year, but you need a ten-year plan, you have approaches to health care cuts but not the big numbers. and social security left untouched. i know it's an election year, but couldn't you create a long-term plan? >> the affordable care act according to the congressional budget office saves $100 billion in the first decade, and the president's budget puts forward another 3$360 billion in health care cuts. overall we are making serious changes to medicare while preserving our basic pact with our seniors to make sure they have the coverage that they deserve. >> is there ever going to be a chance where you all would sit down and talk about something

bigger? something like simpson balls or has that moment passed? >> i think the president showed leadership here. starting in april and then this summer around the debt talks. the president showed willingness to talk with republicans, in september, he put forward committee, the document to the giant committee with $4 trillion of savings and today's budget has deficit reduction achieved in a balanced way. we look forward to having it passed into law as soon as approxima possible. >> we can argue or not whether or not if the president had done something more actively when simpson balls came out, whether that would have had a effect. there's reports that there's a proposal under way between congressional negotiators on

both sides to extend the payroll tax and not have it be fully paid for, is that something that the white house is pushing? >> the payroll tax holiday needs to be extended. that is first and foremost if it's not, there will be a increase in taxes for the average family of $40 per paycheck. that is not acceptable. the president made it clear today, this is not the time for funny busy to hill, this is a time for serious business to get it done as soon as possible. >> and to the point of whether or not the president would agree or you think there would be some favorable response to a payroll tax extension that is not fully paid for up front? >> those are conversations going on on the hill and the president is insisting that the payroll tax be extended and we get it behind us as soon as possible. >> i take that as not committal on that subject of whether it has to be paid for.
