when he is elected he will take gas prices down to $2.50 a gallon. give tennessee fact that his greatest skill is taking down on own underpants, what is the point of offering the idea? >> he can do anything. he'll just talk the gas prices down. he's irrelevant from a polling place. he doesn't have enough money to compete. he seemed to be competing to be mitt romney's vice president. he seemed to be his wing man. he was backing him up on the funding of the olympics and getting earmarks. he seems to be settling. he's just looking for number two. >> joe, why did rick santorum run away from the opportunity to talk about banning contraception, transvaginal probes and the influence of satan? these are serious issues.

from the white house to the vatican. it's now make or break in michigan. we're hearing that one man nonother than donald trumpb is on robo calls on behalf of mitt romney saying that rick santorum, he's tired of rick santorum claiming he's an outsider and he says that romney is a good man that's working hard. that's hardly a ringing endorsement. >> i don't know what you get in terms of an endorsement. it's stort of slim pickings. romney is fighting for his life in michigan. that said, looks like he's doing better in a couple of polls. even if he loses in michigan, he still has this big operation, a lot of money and santorum will not be in a position to pull away. this gop race, this is the fundamental thing to understand about it, none of the guys should win. none of them should win, but somebody has to win.

vote. i think the talk like this frightens women voters. the idea that not only are they against abortion, which everybody knew, but now we have brought forward the idea that there are significant portions of the republican party that don't women to have contraception. it's like they want to roll us back to the 1950s. women are not going to go for that. there are organizations. that are people like planned parenthood, they're going to fight back. there's women that have the capacity to fight back. i think republicans are truly damaging their brand. >> joe, i mentioned earlier to you that issatan didn't make an appearance. >> or did he? >> foreign policy did. it was remarkable because each of the candidates referred to the president as bowing to all these foreign powers almost describing him like a doorman at the tokyo hilton. >> they're their stock and trade. it's fear mongering to the tryi

because of what's been happening with the republican party not much attention will probably fall upon it. what moved you most about what she said today? >> it was how personal it was. it was a personal story and one of the things that the republicans have tried to sweep under the rug is the fact that birth control is used by millions of women not just for fornication, as they would put it, but for basic health care. there's nothing wrong with having birth control for contraception because the abortions that they are so desperate to prevent and we want to prevent are prevented by having access to contraception. women who have access and use contraception are about 85% less likely to have an abortion. they are cutting off their nose to spite their face. i think the larger goal of not having unintended pregnancy, not having women put in terrible

situations should be what we're working toward here. >> what did you think of the president's compromise and yesterday the information we got about virginia governor who is backing off the forced transvaginal probe that he was hoping to inflict upon women. does this suggest that the republican party is changing its mind about pushing this particular agenda? >> no. the state legislature is pushing back against bob mcdonald saying they would rather kill the bill than take out the forced aspect of it. it's just sort of the appearance of the republican party participating in the intimidation and bullying of women into giving birth and this idea that we're going to force you to do it. we're going to make it so difficult and humiliating for you to control your own preproduction that you'll see that to the religious authorities. when you look at when the bishops have sued state to stop them from providing contraception, one of the things

the bishop said is a woman should just abstain. there's a sense of bullying that's really disturbing. >> i want to bring this down to its essential elements and the reason i get so exercised about this is it's fundamentally about respecting women enough that they can make their own decision about their health and their bodies. that's why this is so upsetting, and that's why when you see an all male panel to talk about women's reproductive health, that's why it's so upsetting that it seems like republicans do not trust and respect women to make their own decisions. >> i'm sure they challenge that. i want to play a clip of what happened last night when john keene introduced the topic of birth control. >> since birth control is the latest hot topic, which candidate believes in birth control, and if not, why?

within the last hour, the president has been speaking at the united states of miami. the president addressed the issue of gas prices which have been rising at an alarming rate. traveling with the president for us is kristen welker. how did the president address the issue of rising gas prices, and why did he travel to miami to do so? >> well, to take the last part of your question first, why did he come to miami? florida is a big battleground state. president obama said today that miami is the first american city to have a city hall that's powered entirely by solar and renewable energy. in addition to that, the university of miami has a great engineering program, which president obama did tour today. he seemed quite impressed although he admitted he understood only 10% of what the students were working on. that's why miami.

in terms of gas price, president obama has been hammered recently by republicans who are saying that the high gas prices are a result of president obama's energy policy. today president obama was able to answer some of those critics and he said there's no magic solution to this immediate problem. what we have to do is look to the long term and invest in things like wind, solar, nuclear energy. he's made the point he's opened millions of acres for exploration. he's had a bit of reality check with the students. right after the president finished, we got a slew of e-mails from republicans who said that the president is trying to distract voters during an election year because the price of gas is so high. this is something that will stay with him in the coming months. i think the president trying to get out in front of the argument, and making the point that in 2010 the united states

i have such poor manners and poor form. governor christie was trying to take a hammer at president obama because on paper he and the president do have the same position. they both support civil unions. president obama and the obama administration have made it clear that they believe that the so called mai eed marriage act unconstitutional and they will not defend it. second, he's supporting s598 which is the respect marriage act which is a repeal and he is publicly supported that. the third thing is that the president has given him support to the state by state effort to legalize same-sex marriage around the country. he had great things to say about what's happened in washington and new york state and when chris christie had the opportunity to sign a bill that would allow gay men and lesbians

say, $2.18, $2.20. >> he took over in january of 1995. we dropped down to 20% of the oil which we consumed of being imported in 1987. by the time we reached 2005, at the peak of the republicans controlling the house, senate and presidency, we were up to 60% of our oil being imported. why is that? because newt gingrich in 1995, as the speaker added a rider to the transportation bill year after year after year which prohibited the department of transportation increasing the fuel economy standards of the vehicles we drive in the united states. why is that important? because 70% of the oil that we consume in america goes into gasoline tanks. if you don't improve the efficiency of the vehicles, those gasoline tanks are attached to, then we become more and more dependent upon imported

oil. >> congratulations to newt gingrich on that. well done. rick santorum was becoming to sound like an islamic environmental fundamentalist. he said he want to frak here, frak there and frak everywhere. is that what we need or is he smoking gram of cocaine? >> there's no question natural gas can and will play a larger goal in the united states energy mix. we have to make sure that the fracing doesn't result in kmem cals in the water tables that lines up creating a disease, cancers in children across the nation. assuming that there are environmental safeguards put in place then yes, natural gas will play a lrjer ro democrats are s t's keep the oil from the keystone pipeline in the united states. let's keep the natural gas in the united states. what the republicans are calling

this now is the keystone export pipeline. they don't want any restrictions on the pipeline being built and the oil being sold to other countries and not to the united states. the same thing is true with how they view natural gas produced in the united states. let's just export it across the planet even though the department of energy has determined that there will be a 57% increase in the price of natural gas if we allow that to happen. and, so, their policy is essentially oil above all. not all of the above. it's whatever the oil industry wants and they want higher prices. right now the american petroleum institute does not want the reserve deployed because that will lower prices. they always opposed increased fuel economy standards because
