tv   Andrea Mitchell Reports  MSNBC  February 27, 2012 10:00am-11:00am PST

10:00 am
what a snob. >> we are not just talking about a four-year degree. we are talking about somebody going to a community college. >> meanwhile, mitt romney's attempt to connect with average votesers backfires again. and hollywood's red carpet date with on cars, the winners and losers and the moments we will not forgets. >> wrap up, i'm wrapping up, i'm sorry. i'm freaking out. i love you guys, i'm sorry, i love you. thank you. >> more on that high school shooting near cleveland ohio a small town outside of cleveland, one student dead and four students are in area hospitals after another young man described as a classmate opened fire, that student was chased out of the school reportedly by a teacher. and now in police custody.
10:01 am
we have a reporter with wtam radio in cleveland, laurie, help us through the story and guide us to what you know great the eyewitnesss. >> we have learned that one of the five injured has passed away at the metro health medical center. two were taken to hill kroecreh. i startsed reporting the story from the on sets, we learned after 7:30 that something happened. i started to call the police and knew that something was wrong. had a busy signal and they were hanging up on me. we learned quickly that something had happened. all the reports that we are hearing throughout the morning is that chardon has handled it to the best of their ability. it was impressive that they got in and apprehended the student and got things so organized. >> we are not identifying the student, i know he has been
10:02 am
identified but you do know the relative age and whether the fatal victim was a boy or girl? >> i believe the initial reports that we had were that the fatal victim was a boy. there were four boys, and one girl. original injured and the reports are one of the boys was killed. we did not get final confirmation on that. if final rumor was that it had been one of the boys. you know, no further word on the gunman as to why this happened and what prompted the shooting. there was words that chardon high school was trending a twitter and there was a hint that something would happen today. >> there was suggestion of bullying or some problem with this young man. but we have yet to get those kinds of details. it started in the cafeteria
10:03 am
before first period, and laurie, there were shots fired elsewhere in the school? >> at least go other areas in the school. he opened fire initially in the cafeteria, and when the whole thing started to play out. one of the local affiliates, had a mother on the phone whose son was in the cafeteria when it happened and told his mother he witnessed the shooting and while she was on the air with our local affiliate, she got a text saying he barricaded himself in one of the rooms with a piano, and he was okay and he loved her. and such a heart wrenching text to get from your child. you know, since then, after that, we have heard that after he opened fire on the cafeteria, he then went to two other areas of the school and opened fire as well. >> i know there have been reports that a teacher helped chase the young man out of the school. chased him out of the school and
10:04 am
so he was apprehended. have you been able to confirm? r that? >> a teacher did give chase. the student did take off down route 6 i believe, was where he was finally apprehended and we were told that he was -- he gave himself in to by standers, he did finally stop and turn himself in. so i don't know whether that teacher gave chase all the way until he was apprehended or the teacher went back to deal with the wounded. but we know that a teacher did give chase. >> thank you so much. and joining us now, jonathan who is a senior at chardon high school and was inside the school. jonathan, tell us what happened. >> well, i was i started my first period in the library with a guided study hall and to get my energy out, i took a waaroun the halls it sounded like
10:05 am
someone was splashing plywood against the tables and then identified it as gun shots. everyone was running and screaming. one kid ran past me just out the door. i thought of doing that but i decided to go to the library because the people were in there. the gun shots were not very loud. soy got in there and -- so i got in there and we barricaded ourselves in the room. a teacher put a chair to the door to block it. >> you must have been all terrified. were you using you're cell phones or texting to get a message out? what were you doing? >> i was sitting there feeling nervous, mostly. i had left all my things in the guided study hall. i had just essentially ran. everyone was texting and a lot of people could not get texts
10:06 am
because a lot of people had verizon and everyone was texts at the same time. there was a computer in the room, so we were getting updates from members of the school. that is how we knew when to get out. >> did you have the sense that students were being targeted that the shooter actually knew and went after particular students and there could have been an incident that caused this? >> i do not know the shooter personally. but the people that were targeted seemed specific. i do not want to talk more about it. >> had there been anything on social media? any indication that something was arye and there could have been an incidents? >> i do not use twitter but i
10:07 am
heard from a news report, i think that the shooter had texted somebody about this. some sort of warning was sent out. but other than that, i'm not sure. >> had you had drills in the school? >> absolutely. we had quite a few drills and we -- a lot of people knew this was not a drill because the principal said immediately lock down. usually they warn us and we lock all the doors. >> there's a pa system, you got an alert, an announcement from the principal's office? >> yes. >> when did you tell them it was all clear? did the police come in and check room by room? >> we got an e-mail that said that the police will escort you to, it said the middle of the school but they were taken to the elementary. >> since we see so many parents
10:08 am
and children being reunited, have you seen your folks? >> yeah. i'm here with them right now. big relief when i saw them. a big relief when i saw all my friends at maple, i gave them all a big hug. i'm glads to be alive right now. >> we are of course relieved for you, and this will be taking a lot of time to absorb, our hearts are with you and your family and your fellow students and thanks for sharing your eyewitness account. thank you jonathan. be safe. and in our daily fix today, turning to politics, down to the wire with less than 24 hours before michigan votes, romney and santorum are sparring over their economic plans. >> i saw this morning that senate santorum wrote a piece in the wall street journal, i'm glad he recognized that this has to be a campaign good economy,
10:09 am
it's time for him to focus on the economy and for you all to say, okay, if t economy is going to be the focus, then who has the experience to get the economy going. >> tell him to watch my speech. >> a romney loss in michigan of course would send the gop establishment into a tail spin. mark joins us now. well, we have got less than 24 hours to go. early voting we know has been welt under way. where do you see the matchup now with so many missteps by both sides? >> neither candidate is closing strong, if you ask the hundred sharpies, most feel that romney pulls it out. i'm not so sure. romneys and santorums have had more energy and the fact that
10:10 am
there's a cross over voting driven by unions, i would not be surprised if either of them won. but romney may win the popular vote and i do not think that either candidate will put it away by any means no mat what are happens in michigan or arizona tomorrow. >> of course, there are more delegates at stake in arizona because you do not have, i think the way that dell gates are awarded and romney has a big lead in all the polls and as of now at "meet the press" and the endorsement of governor jan brewer. let's look at the snob comment. >> president obama once said he wants everyone in america to go college. what a snob. [ applause ] >> i understand why eptss you to go to college. he wants to remake you in his image. >> on top of that, we saw the president responded to that already today by pointing out
10:11 am
without mentioning santorum by name, he was addressing the governors that he has been talking about community colleges and all kinds of training for those in vocational fields. it sounded like santorum was taking the college plan outs of context and we know the difference in earnings capability for those that completed a higher degree and those who have-nots. >> even conservatives like pete winner and kathleen parker have a lot of intellectual sympathy for santorum, point out it's not smart. it may reflect his heart and inspire some part of the base, and the press is interested in pursuing him, but there's a discipline of the mouth required to get elected president and santorum is not doing himself favors talking about it. and we saw earlier today, alice
10:12 am
stewart, his spokes person, and santorum himself yesterday backing off the rhetoric, saying it's not about what people think it's about. to call the president a snob and saying that not everyone should go to college the way he did, it's not enhancing his chances being president. >> and attacking jfk to sbragz of church and states. look at this. >> i do not believe in an american with a separation of church and state is absolute. that makes you throw up. >> it seemed that he was setting up a straw man in. >> again, if you want to make the point that's made about both people and what happens with kids in college, even if i wants to say that religion deserves a
10:13 am
larger space, to say kennedy's words make you throw up, it is bad politics. it's the things that he have said throughout his career that some people like. but if he is going to be the nominee, he needs broader support. and that type of rhetoric is not politically smart and it's in a lot of ways, both remarks, calling the president a snob and saying kennedy's comments made him throw up is not presidential. >> i suspect in the reagan democrats the ones that vote a lot, i would not be surprised if some still have jfk's pictures on their walls. >> you would be surprised if they didn't. >> right. and could democrats try to throw michigan to santorum. michigan has an open primary. unions are in fact urging democrats to hurt mitt romney by
10:14 am
voting for santorum. saying that they will be able to choose democratic delegates at the state's democratic caucuses in may. debbie, good to see you. you have been seeing the e-mails, you know what is going on in the democratic party. talk to me about the strategy. it's a chaos theory? >> well, first of all, i to say that a lot of the democratic leadership in terms of bob king, head of the uaw and myself, dnc member, and others, are saying that democrats should nominate democrats and republicans should nominate republicans. but there's enough of an under current that pollsters are taking at least a 10% democratic turnout in the primaries. there's been more e-mail traffic in the last few days that i've seen of people encouraging people to go to the primary tomorrow and quite frankly the rhetoric of mitt romney being anti-labor has energized a lot of labor to consider doing it
10:15 am
tomorrow. i am one of those people that think it could be a factor tomorrow. >> especially in a close race. what about the nra, have they been involved? >> interestingly, a lot of people have talked about it and romney has had a better game, but the nra is known for their turnout and they have been energized this weekend and in one of the strongest nra messages that i've heard and i've heard a lot of them. my husband who i love dearly was a past board member of the nra, have really called mitt romney a danger to nra members. and are really energizing the vote for rick santorum. it's not something that i would take lightly. >> debbie dingell, you know of which you speak. you have what is known as a mixed marriage when it comes to the nra. thank you. >> that is true. >> good to see you. and up next, what happens if

we are demonstratively worse off and we are losing ground. there's a story, he woke up the american people and made sure the debates were more solutions oriented and he helped to set clinton's agenda. we need to do that again. and i believe that can be done without running for president and i'll continue to focus on an issue based campaign as i have been in the past, with did hope that -- with the hope that the next president, whoever it is, will make this a top priority, so we do not end up like the countries in europe. >> are you suggesting a campaign where the candidates are talking about whether or not there's value in a college education or what would you do about contraception or whether the trees are the right height in michigan. do you suggest that there's something wrong with the republican campaign? >> i'm suggesting that there's something wrong with it period.
10:22 am
we are not getting enough substance or solutions. the things i've heard recently are things that frankly we should not be hearing in a presidential campaign in my view. >> what about the fact that one of the candidates if not more are suggesting that they could bring us inexpensive kas lean? >> there's no question, that there are things that need to be done to improve our security and in order to be able to reduce gas prices over time. the things that need to be done are strategic policies that will take a number of years to emp-- put in place. we ought to have a discussion about what energy policy should be, rather than current, you know, current prices, what will do you in order to provide more security and reduce prices over time. >> david walker, thank you very much. safe travels.
