a very emotional time for them. >> absolutely scared out of my mind. it's a very difficult thing to know that you can't be there to help them in a time like that. i just want it back. i'm not going to be able to calm down unless i actually get to hold him. >> john yang is following developments. what do we know at this point? >> craig, just a little bit ago that identified the dead student. his family released a statement saying we are shocked by this senseless tragedy. he was a bright boy who had a bright future ahead of him. the family is torn by the loss. we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time. we don't know the details about the status or conditions of the four other wounded students, three boys and a girl. based on what we learned from

officials and students who talked to reporters, here is what we know. it was 7:30 this morning in the cafeteria. students eating breakfast, some waiting for a study hall that was scheduled for the cafeteria at the first period that begins at 7:30 when a student jumped up or a young man started shooting with a handgun. there are tails of chaos in hallways. students running, trying to escape the scene. some students who were already in other classrooms being barricaded in by their teach terse, herded away from the doors so they couldn't be seen through the glass from the hallway. the wounded were found in separate locations in the high school suggesting the shooter was able to make his way through. there's some suggestions he have not firing randomly, that he had targets in mind. we don't know detail offense that. he's being questioned by

authorities. he was chased from the school building by a teacher and turned himself in some distance from the school. authorities say they believe he was the only actor in this incident. he was the only shooter. there was no other student or no other shooter involved. they are questioning him. he's a juvenile. they aren't officially releasing his name yet or releasing his name at all until he might be charged as an adult. they are still questioning him, trying to figure out why he did this, what sparked this shooting in ohio that's left one student dead and four others wounded. >> what can you tell us about this particular area? what can you tell us about chardon high school and the community in which it sit sns. >> it's about 30 miles east of cleveland. it's fairly rural area. the high school has only about

1,000 students. people describe it as small town usa. it's an area where everybody knows everyone else. the high school is small enough that most students know each other, not by name but probably by sight. it's fairly tight knit community. there's sort of no idea, there's a lot of speculation going on about what triggered this, but we won't know for certain until the investigators are able to question this young man and if he tells his story. >> all right. john yang from chicago as we continue to following this breaking news. thank you so much. we want to let folks know there will be an update here at 4:00. we're expecting another news conference where we will be briefed from officials there on the latest and also during this hour we'll be joined at 2:30 by michelle. it's do or die time for the

republican presidential candidates in michigan. rick santorum and mitt romney are making the rounds with voters there today. our first reports romney loss in michigan could throw this republican primary into an all out tail spin. both candidates are working to overcome some gaffes from the weekend. >> obama once said he wants everybody many america to go to college. what a snob. i understand why he wants you to go to college. he wants to remake you in his image. >> i can't be perfect. i just am who i am. if people think there's something wrong with being successful in america, then they better vote for the other guy. >> joining me now to talk about it michael smerconish who is also an msnbc contributor, bill ballinger. thank you for being with me this

afternoon. bill, i want to start with you because you know michigan politics better than most. what are you hearing on the ground right now in your state? who has the edge right now? >> well, mitt romney's momentum was seem to be building at the end of last week has stopped, and may be rolling backwards. right now it looks like a jump ball tomorrow. the momentum might even be mildly in santorum's favor. >> what do you attribute that slowed momentum? >> there are a variety of factors. you have to look at the money. who is spending what on what. santorum has automated robo calls going into homes. i got one an hour ago myself making it sound like it's coming from the democrats saying cross over and vote in the republican primary. if you listen all the way to the end of it, it's paid for by rick santorum. that is the kind of stuff that's going on here. a lot of subterranean hanky

panky. >> mitt romney seems be demonstrating an inability or unwillingness to connect with blue collar voters there. we know there's $374,000, not much to receive in speaking females. last week it was his wife. he has ann had a few cadillacs. over the weekend, he said this, and i want to put it up on the screen for folks to read. this is what he said. he was down there, the big nascar race, quote, not as close as some of the most ardent fans, but i have some great friends who are nascar team owners. has mitt romney changed his strategy, michael smerconish. is he saying i'm rich, i'm successful, deal with it and vote for me any way. >> craig, i don't think any one of these statements alone is

worth our conversation, but when you put them together, because there's been a whole series of them, then it fosters this narrative of him being a, a wealthy guy but, b, a very detached guy. i don't think it's deliberate. i think this is who he is. i think it's going to build as we held toward november if he survive, and it's going to be a real problem for him to connect with folks that are struggling in this economy. >> if he does end up winning the republican nomination, is mitt romney going to be able to move back to the middle and pick up independent voters? >> i think it's going to be very difficult. they are all out now flexing their beer muscles on their conservative credentials in michigan. the statements by senator santorum wanting to vomit by

hearing that 1960s speech by j.f.k., there's nothing in there to vomit. to pull back and go after independents, politico shows how obama is hammering romney. they can win the battle, but probably lose the war unless they change. >> i want to play a bit of sound here. this is rick santorum talking -- this is him explaining on "meet the press" the snobbery stuff about the president wanting everyone to go to college. listen. >> i encourage my kids to get higher education, absolutely. in fact, if college is the best place for them, absolutely. you know what, if going to a trade school and learning to be a carpenter or plumber or other types of skills that are artists, whatever the case may be or musician, all of those things are very important and

who while professions that we should not look down our nose at and say they are less because you didn't get a four-year college degree. >> who is his audience here? >> well, he is speaking to very conservative republicans in the base of the party who cannot stand president obama. many of them are evangelical voters that he is hoping are strongly resisting mitt romney, will carry him to a victory in michigan and blow this race wide open. he's well positioned in ohio. he's looking at a window of ten days where he needs to take michigan and then go onto sweep super tuesday and really knock romney right off the rail. he needs to build a coalition of strong supporters, but he has done himself a world of hurt as michael smerconish has mentioned in others in these past couple of days where he had a surge that was building and now it's run straight into a wall.

teachers on the job, we've had some drills and they done a lot of things we know. i can't say enough about them. it's really tough situation, obviously. teachers did as good as they could have. >> back to that breaking news and the deadly shooting in ohio this afternoon. a gunman opened fire in a high school cafeteria killing one student and injuring four others. it happened around 7:30 this morning in a small town of chardon. clint, we love to hear from you. unfortunately, it's not during times like this, but give us some perspective on people like this, students like this who open fire in schools. over the past few years it seemed like there's been more and more reportings of this type of behavior. do kids who do this, do they have certain things in common? >> number one, since the colu i

columbine shooting, kids have bottled their behavior. we have seen e-mail postings linked to the shooter in this case just like we saw in virginia tech where the shooter posted pictures of himself with weapons and acceptability these rather ominous and threatening e-mails that were truly of things to come. we know this student is described as someone of a loaner, someone who felt he was being bullied by other students. we have this, i'm just not going to take it, where obviously being bullied doesn't justify today's actions. >> if we know the pictures are out there and the e-mails, why did all of that stuff go unchecked? how does that stuff not get

flagged? >> i think this is how the authorities have to determine. who received the e-mails and what did they do with them? it's such a common means of communication by kids if high school. i'm sure there's threats and bragging and other things that go on on a daily basis. any time there's a threat, there's weapons indicated, every student, every parent should know that today that's a threat that has to be dealt with, it has to be identified, it has to be verified. if we don't take appropriate action in a case like that, the tragedy that looms just around the corner unfortunately is what we've seen this morning. >> clint, thank you. >> thank you. more deadly outrage over the burning of korans by u.s. forces in afghanistan. today a suicide bomber ran the car into the gates killing nine afghans. the taliban claimed the attack

was an act of revenge. atia abawi joins me. what's the latest? >> reporter: there may be fewer demonstrations since last week's koran burnings. there's still a great deal of anger throughout the country, and the anger is being played on by the taliban. you mentioned the attack out east another a military airport. the suicide bomber killing nine afghans and service members. we're hearing about a possible poisoning at a u.s. base in eastern afghanistan. the taliban claims to have worked with the chef that worked in the dine facility, a chef that feeds u.s. soldiers. they had him poison their food there. they are investigating a food tampering incident, no u.s. soldiers were injured. they have found high traces of chlorine within the coffee as well as the fruit. the anti-american sentiment and

the western sentiment is at an all time high. foreigners living on the edge and many wondering how the u.s. and international community can go forward in afghanistan with all the mistrust between afghans and their foreign partners within the country. >> thank you. joining me now jack jacobs and jim frederick. how real is the possibility that american and afghan relations have been damaged beyond the poinl point of repair? >> i don't think the relations were good to start with. we're makinge ining assumption can fashion into some centrally self-governing country.

that's not the case. we haven't had any success, and not likely to have success over a long period of time trying to fashion a country out of what's there. >> officials are set to continue those conversations about the size, scope and speed of the withdrawal. the next phase of withdrawal in afghanistan. how dramatically do you think the most recent violence will basic the plans? >> i think the affect will be very large. i think publically administration officials say there's no change. they are still committed. privately, anonymous sources high up in the administration says a more dramatic draw down. we shouldn't underestimate how strained relations have become. >> you mentioned political ramifications. let's talk about that. how do you think this issue will

play out politically as we approach the election in november? >> i think you've seen the republican candidates that are used this as a political football for a little while. i think mitt romney backed off of some of the challenges that he made to obama once he understood just how serious the situation is. i think you have republican congressmen who are calling for us to double down to spend more money, to stay longer and increase troop presence. i think the chances of that are extremely remote. i think you'll have an earlier draw down and quieter draw down than originally planned. >> colonel what are we saying about afghanistan ten years from now? >> we're going to say it's a mistake. we did the same thing in vietnam where we, in the beginning, made a mistake. in the beginning we didn't send enough troops in order to get the job done and drag it out for a long period of time and look

back 40 years and said we made a mistake. we can look back right now and say we had some success almost a decade ago, and decided we could go to iraq and lost the opportunity to capitalize on our success when we drove the taliban out. seven years later went back to afghanistaning to try to fix it, it's too late. >> college roommate of mine spent time serving in afghanistan. we used to talk about this a fair amount. he said one of the things that folks don't realize about what's happening is the depth of which the people there don't want us there and resent the fact that we remain there. is that what you are hearing as well? >> these are people who rejected interlopers from outside time and time again. everybody before the british, then the british, then the russian s and now the americans because it's not that kind of country. it's a fragmented place. anybody who tries to impose a

bullied outcast is in custody. he turned himself in shortly after being chased out of the school by a faculty member. michelle, what's the very latest. what are you hearing? >> right now we have a 4:00 p.m. news conference that will happen this afternoon. we'll learn at that point. i know you and i both know the name of the alleged shooter but probably a little more about that and the lease of that shooter's name. we know there are four students injured. i can confirm that three of the students were taken to cleveland metro health. one of those students did pass away. there does appear to be a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old that are still at that facility. the other two were transported to hillcrest hospitals. counselors will be on hand probably until 7:00 p.m. k through 12 will be closed tomorrow. i contacted the church across

the street from where the shooting happened, there's candle light vigil that will happen. >> we heard from family members that the killed student is being identified as daniel parmentor. we heard some tweets and stuff out there in social media that might have given notice that this could happen. >> in those photos it's not confirmed but it could be the alleged shooter in those photos holding up a picture of a couple of guns, another sign within that. we don't know who saw those. we don't know how they were distributed. we don't know the basis behind that. here is some positive things that did go right. we do know from the superintendent that this school did practice disaster drills

prices are 13 cents higher than a year ago. 35 cents higher than a year ago. it's becoming an increasing issue in the presidential campaign as well. joining me is congressman ed ma markey. why is this happening now? >> it's clear it's happening by speculation that's being based upon the fear that in the middle east, in iran, that there is a looming crisis and iran is using this as a threat. the only way that we can deal with this fear that iran is injecting into the oil markets is for the united states to use

the strategic petroleum reserve. >> there are many who say that tapping into the verreserves is merely a short term fix. it went do anything to bring down gas prices considerably for an extended period of time. what's your response to that? >> they don't know what they're talking about. in 1991, the first president bush used it as the war with iraq and the prices dropped by 33%. president clinton used it and the prices dropped by 16%. president bush used it during the katrina crisis and the prices dropped by 10%. who ever is saying that doesn't know what they are talking about. the oil markets now realize as speculat speculators that they will lose

its recovered the remains of the last service american member unaccounted for in iraq. he was kidnapped by gunmen back in 2006 after sneaking off base to visit his iraqi wife in baghdad. his remains were positively identified in dover, delaware. army officials say they had no further details about the circumstances surrounding his death or the discovery of those remains. president obama is doubling down on his call for more money for higher education after presidential candidate, rick santorum called him, quote, a snob. today the president challenged him to stop cutting from the classroom and seemed to react to santorums statement with this. >> we're not just talking about a four-year degree. we're talking about somebody going to a community college and getting trained for that

manufacturing job that now is requiring somebody walking through the door handling a million dollar piece of equipment. >> joining me now is connecticut governor. good afternoon. let's talk about education. the president called on all in this kun trip ncountry not to c education. how realistic is that given the state of the economy? >> i think it's getting more realistic than a year or two years ago. this president inherited an economy in free fall. that stabilized. we added jobs for the last 23 months in a row. a total of 37.7 million jobs including in reference over 400 manufacturing jobs. the first back to back increase since the early 1990s. this president is focused on what it's going to take to sustain economic growth.

question not tolerate being the 16th best nation at educated people. that's where we are right now. we used to be number one. >> i want to speak to that. there are those that in the education reform movement who cite that same statistic. they pointed that we spend more per pupil in this country that a lot of industrialed countries do, but we're not seeing the return on that investment. what do you say to that? >> i think you're right. that's why spending has to be accompanied by reform. we need to hold people to high standards, students, teach tersters terse tersetersers, mayors. we have gone from number one to number 16. this has been a long decline over a 20 plus year period of time. it's time to reverse that. that's what we got to do. >> the president called on

governors to invest more, create jobs in their states. talk to me a bit more about. >> i think the president had a far range in discussion with the governors who were in washington today for our conference. it was a remarkable experience. he took questions in the private session from republican, democrats. he gave reasoned answered to every point that was being made. it was a strong performance by somebody who is clearly focused on the future. >> was there a bipartisan mood in that room? be honest with me. >> people aren't going to say, republicans don't say to this president, in his presence, politics requires them to say outside. there was a discussion about what it takes to put this country -- >> the deficit reduction plan. >> the president rightly pointed out that he's made more cuts on the domestic side.

he did have a difference on the military spending side, things that we need to complete our military spending program that's currently under way but pointed out although republicans criticize him, he could not have done that because simpson boles calls for revenue. i'm a supporter of balancing the budget, then you can't have it both ways. you can't have your cake and eat it too. if you want the president to do the job, you have to come alone. he's offered the american people $10 of cuts for every $1 increased revenue and republicans have turned that down. that's unacceptable. >> thank you so much appreciate your time. >> thank you. billy crystal's return to the academy awards did not come without controversy. we'll have the scoop on the backlash over crystal's appearance in black face during the opening act. there's a lot going on

we want to update you on the breaking news we have been following, the deadly school shooting in ohio. for the first time we're hearing from a student grazed by a bullet. he said he was having breakfast with his friends in the school cafeteria when the gunman started shooting. he said he is still in utter disbelief about what happened. >> you were grazed by one of the bulle bullets. show me. >> right here. as i was turning away from the gunman, he caught me right on the ear. >> how is your hearing? how close was he when he fired the shot? >> we were at the table next to him. we were within three feet of him. three of the victims were at my table as well. >> kid is lucky to be alive.

good afternoon. it's monday, february 27th. we begin with an update on that school shooting in ohio. frightening moments this morning. one student dead, four other students in area hospitals after a young man described as a classmate, opened fire at chardon high school. he was chased out of the school by a teacher. he's now in police custody. there's video of the young man being taken into custody. we'll have much more coming from the scene later on this story in the house. first, it's primary eve for the race
