no knockout punch. mitt romney fails to bring clarity to the primary race. cosmic curse? astronomers claim to uncover a celestial clue to the sinking of the "titanic." and serious competition, the world's fastest man takes on the world's most eligible bachelor. i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc.
2:01 am
we'll begin this morning with a split decision. yesterday on super tuesday, mitt romney pull off a narrow victory in the key delegate rich state of ohio. but lost several other states to rival rick santorum. here's a breakdown. romney was the apparent winner of ohio with 38%. just 1% more than santorum. in virginia, it was a two-man race because santorum and newt gingrich didn't make it on to the ballot. romney the projected winner with 60%. with 72%, romney also won massachusetts. that of course the state where he was governor. romney is the projected winner in vermont with 40%. in the idaho caucuses, romney won a decisive victory with 62%. he also picks up four delegates in wyoming. while ron paul picks up one. meanwhile, rick santorum is the projected winner in tennessee with 37%. he's also the projected winner in oklahoma with 34%.
2:02 am
and with 40%, santorum is the projected winner of the caucuses in north dakota. not surprising i, newt gingrich took home his -- took his home state of georgia with 47%. that's his first win since south carolina. as just this past hour, nbc news has called mitt romney the projected winner in alaska with 33%. all right. we'll get more on super tuesday and race in ohio with nbc's tracie potts. she joins us from the state's capital. right there in columbus. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. taking a look at those numbers you just showed us, it's pretty clear that mitt romney is beginning to solidify his lead among his republican challengers. he's now got three times as many delegates it appears as his closest competitor and like he did a week ago in michigan, he's proven that he can win a tight race.
2:03 am
it appears mitt romney eked out a very narrow victory over rick santorum in ohio as little as 1 percentage point. >> i'm not going to let you down. i'm going to get this nomination. >> reporter: romney realizes it's all about delegates. he's now got more than 300. it's a numbers game. and he's winning. >> tonight we're doing some counting. we're counting up delegates for the convention and it looks good and we're counting down the days until november and that looks even better are. >> reporter: romney won his home state as well, massachusetts, vermont, idaho, alaska and four delegates in wyoming. santorum scored victories in tennessee, oklahoma and north dakota. >> we have won in the west, the midwest and the south and we're ready to win across this country. >> reporter: newt gingrich only won his home state of georgia and may end up with less than half that state's delegates. santorum is urging him to drop
2:04 am
out. >> people who said we are not going to allow the elite to decide who we are allowed to nominate. >> reporter: ron paul had hoped to win the caucus states but he lost them all. still, he told supporters, his message is being heard. >> make sure they hear our message all the way to d.c. >> reporter: so now with super tuesday behind, the focus turns to the south and the plains. today newt gingrich will be in alabama and santorum, rick santorum will be in mississippi and kansas. lynn? >> tracie there for us in columbus, ohio. so where do the candidates stand in terms of states and delegates won as they try to reach that all-important 1,143 needed to get the republican nomination? as of now, mitt romney has picked up 323 delegates. that's in 13 states. rick santorum has a total of 101 delegates in 7 states. newt gingrich has 105 in 2
2:05 am
states and as we mentioned last night, ron paul picked up his very first delegate. there were two other super tuesday results to mention. both of them in ohio. long-time cleveland congressman dennis kucinich lost a democratic primary showdown made necessarily by newly redrawn district maps to 15-term congresswoman marcy captor of toledo. she'll face the republican primary winner, that guy, the man known as joe the plumber. samuel joe wurzelbacher gained his name in 2008 by expressing his concerns to barack obama. filmmaker michael moore told rachel maddow for all intents and purposes, he thinks the presidential race is over, thanks to policies made by the republican party, what he calls the christian conservative

party. >> this is just -- why are we even here talking about this? this is the biggest clown show. isn't the election over already? i mean, half the republicans spent the last couple of weeks sinking their own ship. isn't this -- i mean, haven't they -- after these last two weeks with whatever strategy they come up with -- who sat down and told them that, hey, what we've got to do is come out against birth control. we have to come out against something that 99% of the population uses. you know, they would have been better off coming out against meat. there's like 3% of the country is vegetarian. they would have only ticked off 97% of the country. i think the republican party has become the christian conservative party. they've booted out their moderates and turned their back on liberal republicans and they're going to -- look, who's
