then whitney houston's daughter opens up to oprah about her legendary mother's death. has she inherited some of whitney's woes? hi, everybody. hope you had a great weekend. i'm thomas roberts. the dreadful international incident triggered by cold-blooded murder. that's how military officials are describing the nighttime massacre in afghanistan where an american soldier shot up a city of sleeping civilians killing 16. all this on the heels of recent protests over koran burnings stirring new worries and heated political debate in the u.s. over the future of america's longest running war. >> i don't think we have the willpower or the capacity to do the things you have to do to fundamentally change the region. we need to understand that our being in the middle of countries like afghanistan is probaby probably counterproductive. we are not prepared to be ruthless enough to force them to change, and yet we are clearly

8:02 am
are very graphic and very heart-wrenching. it is children, little babies with bullet holes through the forehead. these are pictures the afghan people are seeing. even on the social media for afghans who live in the cities who use computers, they have their facebook pages all abuzz in this incident that occurred in kandahar. many people changed their profile picture to the picture of a young teenager boy from the district crying because he lost every member of his family. >> atia, what is the government saying? are they calling for calm right now? >> reporter: the government is not surprisingly upset themselves. they think and say this was an intentional act and was unforgivable. that's the way many afghans feel and that's the way many nato officials feel as well. what the afghan government is saying is that they want the u.s. and nato to bring this man to justice, to bring it to the afghan hands of justice. the parliament today calling on the u.s. and nato to bring that

individual to the afghan court system. let the afghans decide his fate. right now we haven't heard much about the government to stop the unrest. there have been religious leaders, pro-government religious leaders i should say, that have called for demonstrations not to happen. that the violence should not continue, but unfortunately that's not expected. >> mick, as we are talking about the process in afghanistan, the longest running war ever in america's history up until this point, has been to ensure that the serpent doesn't grow another head. that al qaeda doesn't resurge, but the latest washington post/abc news poll is showing that 60% of americans no longer support this war. more want troops out of there, they want them home. what kind of a setback does this pose to the u.s. mission or is this a game-changing moment or a tragic blip on the radar screen that just keeps going on? >> well, just a short while ago a senior defense official
8:04 am
briefing reporter said, as tragic and horrifying as this incident was, the killing of the nine children, three women and four men, 16 in all, but apparently by a lone gunman, a u.s. army staff sergeant, which will absolutely not change the u.s. mission and strategy in afghanistan. we'll have to see how this plays out in the weeks and months ahead, but that's the position the pentagon is taking right now. and to answer a couple quick questions that were raised by atia a moment ago, u.s. military officials are convinced at this point in the early part of the investigation that it was a lone gunman. and in terms of who will prosecute this individual, the united states military has a standing agreement with afghanistan that the u.s. military would, in fact, prosecute any soldier, marine, sailor, whoever, if they are accused of a crime there in afghanistan.
8:05 am
so the likelihood that this soldier would be turned over to afghanistan is practically zero. and again, they still believe there was only one soldier involved, but it is very early in this process. they have identified him as a 38-year-old staff sergeant from ft. lewis, but that's as far as they'll go right now. >> we have the photo of the president leaving his daughter's basketball game to call hamid karzai to express condolences, but it is not calming the violence that could be coming in the next few days. >> so far, everybody is obviously holding their breath for fear that there will be another round of outbreaks and protests, deadly protests, that following the koran burning just a couple weeks ago. but so far, again, everybody is holding their breath and they hope that any treaties from the government or that we heard a moment ago from atia will calm the sensitivity and the nerves at this point. but they are fully geared up and ready for any possibility.

>> thank you to both of you. atia live in kabul, and jim m k miklaszewski, i appreciate it. turning to the campaign trail here at home, three candidates all depending on the poll that you look at, the three gop front-runners. the volatile contest is taking place in the south ahead of the presidential primaries in alabama and mississippi tomorrow. newt gingrich and rick santorum are splitting the vote. in alabama three different polls show each of the candidates in the lead, but rick santorum said the road to the republican nomination is more than just about a numbers kim game. >> the math is not the issue, the issue is vision. the issue is governor romney outspending me 10-1 and still not able to close the deal. >> in a poll from alabama's state university, santorum is third with 17% of the vote. let's bring in this morning's political power panel, i'm joined by ann cornblue, political editor for "the

washington post." former governor of ohio, ted strickland, and new york daily news columnist, s.e. cob. i want to start with you, ann, could santorum and gingrich split voters and that actually work to romney's advantage in the south? >> well, potentially, but with respect to santorum, that clip you played of him earlier saying it is not about the math, it really is. even if, now look, i don't want to downplay the stakes here, it is important whoever wins in the south symbolically. for mitt romney a win in the south suggests he has agree geographic reach. in newt gingrich's favor, it could be a huge win for him. if santorum wins, he'll say i'm the alternative to romney. in the end, neither of the states will decide who the nominee is. it is just another series of states and it really is about the math. >> governor, over the weekend we

self-detrukting. i don't think it makes a lot of difference as to who -- finally emerges from this field of three people. >> so s.e., the primaries historically come to matter and now they really matter. who benefits the most come together? >> usually the states follow, they don't choose the next nominee, but it is interesting if you look back at 2008, john mccain and ron paul were the only candidates in the race at the time. john mccain won mississippi handedly, but if you look at who voters chose second, third and fourth. ruk huckabee, ron paul and romney came in at 3% of the vote. not good news for romney, but looking at somebody like john mccain winning the state, that could be good news for romney. if you look at alabama, huckabee won that handedly in 2008. mitt romney came in third and two days later withdrew from the race. >> things are getting really rough out there when there's a war over grits.
8:10 am

governor, love the one you're with. >> well, we like bacon and eggs here in ohio, but quite frankly that's not how you're going to appeal to the voter. you appeal to the voters by talking about jobs, like economic opportunity, like health care. and these candidates are, quite frankly, sometimes humorous. "saturday night live" has rich material these days. but i don't think they are really connecting with the american people. >> all right. anna, a grits girl out of you or not? >> i'm with the governor. i'm just glad that he's not talking about the trees being the right height anymore because he said that so often in michigan. no one quite knew what to make of that. we'll see what he has to say about illinois. that's up next. >> thank you to all of you. ann, ted strickland and s.e.cupp, i'm now going to call you cup and plate. she brings a paper plate with notes on it.

8:18 am
forgetting is that many of these delegates are unbound delegates, so if you voted for somebody other than mitt romney, you can still make your vote be for rick santorum if you're a delegate. and so what the romney people are using voodoo math trying to show they are inevitable, and the truth is anybody that knows the delegate count and studies it, they are having just as much trouble getting to the winning number and this has the real chance of going to a convention where the conservative will win. and frankly it should be a conservative to represent the party, we are a conservative party. >> when you're talking about going to the convention, you're counting on the brokered convention, correct? >> not necessarily. right now we have four players in the race. it is very possible, depending on what happens, that all of the conservatives unify behind rick santorum in the coming states. we are starting to see that. second of all, there are states that he's already won like iowa and missouri, which haven't actually done their delegates yet. the third thing is romney is
8:19 am
counting arizona and florida as winner-take-all states, which is absolutely wrong. according to the rnc, if you go earlier than march 1st, you can only give out proportionate delegates. first of all, it is possible rick santorum very well could win outright, but second of all it could go to a convention. and so this thing has a long way to go. there's only been one-third of the delegates assigned, so mitt romney doesn't want to talk about the issues, he's tried to spend $35 million in negative ads and that doesn't work. so basically in the middle of the second quarter he's trying to call the game. maybe we should all realize romney just has an enthusiasm gap where the party doesn't want to get behind him. >> still when talking about delegates, he has 454, 40% of the total he needs. rick santorum, 217 delegates in his column. when we talk about the effect of newt gingrich in the campaign with 107 delegates himself, a third place for sure right now,
8:20 am
but what are his chances or gingrich's campaign doing to your candidate's chances of taking the south? >> well, first of all, rick santorum won last week in tennessee and oklahoma. so rick santorum can prove that he can play almost anywhere. and, in fact, in both of the states, newt gingrich came in third place. so rick santorum shows he can geographically play everywhere. the real problem is today mitt romney is getting votes by the minority of our party. he can't seem to get above 35% to 40% in any state, and those are the moderates getting behind mitt romney. what we need are for all the conservatives to unify against the best person to symptom romney and clearly rick santorum has shown he can do that winning four times as many states as gingrich has. >> i'm just learning rick santorum did reach out to mitt romney to call to wish him a happy 65th birthday today. it is governor romney's birthday campaigning in mobile, alabama.
