right now on "andrea mitchell reports," southern discomfort, romney complains about the damage of a pro longed fight. >> can you imagine anything that would be a bigger gift to barack obama than us us not having a nominee until the end of august. it's not going to happen. >> with 90 delegates at stake and no clear front-runner, santorum and gingrich are slogging on. >> we have been running a, marathon breathing through a straw. we are sucking hard on that straw trying get as much air as we can in. >> we have a chance to break loose. it would be be so close that we would be moving forward, that everyone would move forward. >> let the spin begin.
10:01 am
meanwhile, massacre in afghanistan, new protests after u.s. soldier goes on a killing spree. president obama said that the fall out will not drive america out. >> make no mistake, we have a strategy that will allow us to responsibly wind down this war. we are transitions to the afghans that are moving into the lead. that will allow us to bring our roops home. >> and today president obama hosts prime minister david cameron for his first official visit to washington. a preview coming up with britain's ambassador to the mie united states. and has the battle for the south gone to a food fight? >> i had cat fish for the first time. >> you have the best grits and i'm looki ining forward to havi them. >> i understand cheese grits and
10:02 am
i under shrimp and grits. >> i do not like grits. in our daily fix, southern strategy, is mitt romney going for a win or a share of the delegates at stake tonight. his travel schedule offers one include as mississippi and alabama are voting today, mitt romney has moved to st. louis missouri who holds their caucuses saturday. you are looking at live pictures there. does romney feel he can pull off a win in dixie? >> win tomorrow and we need your help. >> do you get a sense that you have to win one or the two states tomorrow? does your campaign need that? >> no, absolutely not. i mean, john mccain did not win either of the states. >> nbc news, white house correspondent, chuck todd and chris cillizza, we are hearing a
10:03 am
lot of opinions from both sides, and a lot of eating on both sides. what are the various, you have been going through the exit polls and data, mitt romney has not gotten to 30% in any of the southern states. >> in fact, it's like the herman cain, 28-28-28. it's a different number of a plan. 26 in 1 other tate. the culturally southern states, throwing in oklahoma, who vote like southern states, show romney unable to crack 38% the hype is being drinch -- bedriven by the romney base -- >> maybe they are not playing the expectation game. >> they have helped to raise the bar a bit for them here.
10:04 am
my feeling is he can did not crack 30% in tennessee, how does it work here in the deep south? again, because of the way the machine is in mississippi, i can buy how he sneaks it in there, but boy, alabama seems like a tougher is he. but neither santorum nor gingrich have both gotten 30 in the same state either, we have not seen a scenario where all three have strength. >> chris cillizza, mitt romney is vulgaring with his blue collar roots. he was with jeff foxworthy and went to biggest sports radio show down south and tried to explain his approach to peyton manning. >> i don't want to see him go to miami toor the jets. i have a lot of good friends, the owner of the miami dolphins and new york jets are friends of
10:05 am
mine. >> he is paling around with the owners again. what is it with him? >> i love the football matches between the two sports teams. i mean, look, this is fundamentally the problem for mitt romney. he committed the same kind of weird error before tennessee saying that he knows the owners in nascar but does not watch the race. this is a guy that is friends with the owners and not the people that watch the sports and secondly, i know you are be talking about the president going to watch a game in columbus or today in columbus -- >> it's tonight in dayton, but that is all right. >> dayton, ohio. >> dayton, geez, i knew it was ohio. sports is important in politics. chuck and i have talked about this lots of times off camera.
10:06 am
it connects people p you are more likely to feel like you relate to barack obama when he fills out the ncaa bracket every year, go back to the special election in massachusetts when the democratic candidate, could not -- she said that kurt shillishill ing rooted for the yankees, it was a disconnect, you cannot connect that well, if you do not know sports. it's a broader problem, mitt romney's blue collar roots do not exist. so trying to make them up does not work all that well. >> we have to show this, because it's so much fun. what is more cute, let's watch letterman. >> okay. >>
10:07 am
thanks for watching. >> oh, my. >> now the truth is this has been a long campaign. >> yes it has. >> and we should not joke -- >> give him a break, give him a break look at their schedules. it's like a chuck todd andrea mitchell level of schedules. constantly working. >> and there's nothing like that ten minute nap. it's weirdly refreshing. you know it. let's talk about it here, the campaign goes on a nap here if he does snot win bo-- if he doe both. we will get a santorum mississippi, newt in alabama, and romney in both. it means marching on. >> if newt loses it all he could go away. >> you had to go there.
10:08 am
you know, so, i think santorum needs both to have a viable way forward to contest the nomination. if romney wins one or finishes second in both. he is still the front-runner. >> keep watching tonight. we will all over it tonight. good talking to you both about southern strategy. and been a lot of speculation that republican race could end with a romney santorum ticket. but yesterday, mitt romney put that idea to rest. >> if you were to become the nominee of your party, sir, you would almost have to put a conservative, a real -- i know you are saying you are conservative yourself, but even to the right of you on your ticket. >> well, that would preclude of course, rick santorum. his record does not is suggest that hes that fiscal conservative chops that i have.
10:09 am
>> alice stewart, glad to see you here in person. what about mitt romney dising your candidate as possible running mate if rick santorum rolls into tampa, second place in delegates, having the strength in the south which is the republican base. w why isn't he considered? >> we will consider mitt romney for running mate when the time comes. the mitt romney group has been pushing out the math. it's a smoke screen to divert attention away from fact that they are not energizing the base or the conservatives or tea party and as chuck said he ises -- he is not breaking 30% and people are recognizing that rick is the true conservative in the race, hes that momentum now. he can take on romney and barack obama. the key issue, jobs and the
10:10 am
committee. but romney care is important. people are recognizing that he said all along that he did not push for romney care to be put in place to national level and we see video after video where he did. and people are seeing that. and voting accordingly. >> with the massacre in afghanistan and the threats in iran and what we are seeing in syria. foreign policy has come back out as a potential issue. here is rick santorum. >> the only person in this race that has experience as commander and chief. >> rick santorum has never been the commander in chief, as he said is. >> what he meant was experienced to be commander in chief. we have long days and that was
10:11 am
in the middle of a busy restaurant. he has experience to be commander and chief with his work on the armed services committee, he has intelligence that is critical and right on the issues of how to make america a super power and we need to return, to you know, america being the super power that it has been in the past, we need to do everything that we can to reinforce our military here and certainly our strength across the world. >> how much do you think that the whole question of mitt romney being a mormon is in play in the south? this is the alabama governor governor bently being asked about that. >> do you think that mitt romney's religion will be an issue in your state, governor? >> well, i think that is a very subtle issue that probably may be a problem in many states, not just in alabama. >> do you agree with that
10:12 am
analysis? >> i think people, you know, in terms of how they view the mormon faith, voters are mixed on. what is a bigger detractor, he calls it a an away game when he goes to the south. it's because he is not on the issue with them. he is not someone, the people of the south can resonate with on many issues. more than ingredient ianything, about him being out of touch. when he went to baseball games he talked to the people in the box next to him. he is out of touch with the people rick has been in mississippi and alabama, these are hard working people. many of them do not have jobs, they need somebody who understands where they come from and what it takes to put food on
10:13 am
the table. >> does he have a shot at winning tonight? >> he has a great chance. >> and if he doesn't? >> it's about the delegates. rick has won seven contests and tied in michigan, which is mitt romney's own state and we want to do as well as we can, first or second is great and continue to rack up delegates. that is what it's about. this is a, marathon not a sprint. he will continue to rack up delegates as many as possible and that is the path to victory. >> great to see, thank you for coming in. >> thank you. >> and two of the afghan presidents survived an ambush, part of a growing backlash, and nows of students held a protest in the eastern part of the country, burning flags and calling for u.s. troops to go home. we have our correspondent, richards, thank you for joining us, first of all, is it your

response than the one after the could koran burnings here in kabul, it was intense but no riots on the street and no protests. it could still effeescalate. but it did not have the same emotional reaction where people felt that their entire religion was being disrespected, it was an incident carried out by one soldier who seems to have snapped. >> richard, what brought it home for me, being so far away from the action, you are right there, was the photo on the front page of t oft new york times today he was calling on satellite phones, he is grieving. he lost 11 relatives. this a man who was pro u.s. and moved closer to the base to get
