most in need. i'm tamron hall. the "news nation" is following breaking news. we have live pictures from andrews air force base where david cameron is arrived just a short time ago, only moments ago. this visit comes as the crisis if afghanistan grows following the massacre of 12 afghans involving a u.s. soldier. just a few hours ago president obama insisted the u.s. is committed to finish the job in afghanistan despite a new york times report that the administration has been talking about speeding up the withdrawal. security has been heightened. sunday's killing has not sparked the violence after the burning of the koran but a protest by students in the eastern part of that country has raised fear that things could flair up again. protesters chanted death to america, even burned an efigy of

president obama. they vowed justice is served. >> we will make sure that anybody who was involved is held fully accountable with full force of the law. i'm confident that we can continue the work of meeting our objective, protecting our country and responsibly bringing this war to a close. richard, there were reports that thousands showed up. i saw your report with andrea mitchell. you said it was more like hundreds of people. is that because we're not seeing the outrage equal to the koran burning or is the word not spreading. give me some insight. >> reporter: so far it doesn't appear to be the same level of outrage. the koran touched a very core belief. the people felt the religion of a billion people was being attacked deliberately.

this incident where you have one staff sergeant wander off his base in the middle of the night and in a situation of rage go on this murderous shooting spree killing 16 people, most of them children. 11 of them from one family. it seems that afghans, at this stage, seem to be willing to accept that this was an isolated incident and will try and move on from it. friday prayers are still coming later this week a as you said, people are still learning the details of this crime. they are really quite horrific. we're hearing more about what specifically happened on that night as well. the staff sergeant left his base between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning. walked about a mile and then went into three different afghan homes opening fire, stabbing people, shooting people and tried to set fire to some of the bodies. an american search party was

alerted that this american soldier was missing. that search party left the base. helicopters were involved and started to track him down. some american soldiers found him laying in a prone position in an open field and the american search party knew about the shooting incident that civilians had been executend and asked th soldier if he knew about it, and he said i did it. he's still in custody and there's talk about putting him on trial in front of a tribunal here is afghanistan, u.s. military. >> thank you. the military still with holding the name of that soldier and out of fear of retaliation the army has his family under tight security. defense secretary leon panetta said he could face the death

penalty if convict e edconvicte. there's a conversation about speeding up the withdrawal despite the stance and the words from the president today whar, can you clear up for us? >> after this incident, white house officials freaked out about this as one could imagine. it allowed those within the administration who had been lobbying hard to accelerate the withdrawal of troops from afghanistan, to push their point forward. we've heard knew from the president himself from secretary of defense leon panetta that there is already a plan in place for a gradual and responsible, in the words of the president, withdrawal from afghanistan that would end sometime at the end of 2014. all combat troop, according to

defense secretary may be out sometime by next year. there would still be a number of troops left in afghanistan to provide the kind of training and assistance that the u.s. military commanders think will be necessary until the end of 2014. now, is there a possibility that if events change and improvements made and security there in afghanistan that that timetable could be accelerated, that's more than -- that would be possible. i can tell you that there appears to be no appetite on the part of the president, at least for the time being and secretary defense panetta and military commanders to accelerate the withdrawal plan that is already in place. >> all right. thank you very much. now to politics and rom's fight to win one or both primaries and prove he should be the nominee for his party. polls show romney, santorum and

mississippi, they fit either newt gingrich or rick santorum. these are folk who is make less than $100,000. they did not go to college. they are evangelical christians. those are not the people who vote for mitt romney. on the flip side he's out spent santorum four to one. newt gingrich, three to one. this same story line here, but well respected republican who is coming up later, jimmy williams is putting his money on your guy, newt gingrich, to win both of these states. >> i think it's loser go home tonight. i think it's the loser leave time. >> loser go home for santorum and gingrich. many people believe it's newt gingrich go home if he cannot win. >> i'm talking about the candidate that i've endorsed. he's got to win tonight after he called the shot earlier this morning and say romney is going

to suppress the minority vote in this country. a texas state law requiring a photo i.d. to cast a ballot is on hold until a federal court decides whether it can be enforced. the measure deprives hispanic voters who tend to lack this kind of identification. pete williams just sat down with attorney general eric holder. what did the attorney general told do you in this new interview? >> he calls this a solution in search of a problem. he says requiring a photo i.d. does set up a problem to a constitutional fundamental right. >> we want to make sure that our elections are free from fraud, but there's no proof that our elections are marred by in-person voter fraud. >> we have to show driver's licenses to do lots of things in our live, to get on a plane, even to buy sudafed.

voting is a fundamental constitutional right. you shouldn't have to show additional i.d. many people that don't have them would have to pay money or go to great lengths or travel great dances in order to get one. in texas you have to be fingerprinted to get the photo i.d. as the alternative for the driver's license. for all these reasons he says the texas one the justice department decided would get in the way of voting and that would be unconstitutional. as a separate matter, the other states that don't have to get pre-clearance, he thinks it's a matter of bad public policy. he realizes that this is something every state legislature is looking at. >> supporters of the law dismissed the federal government's move as election year politics while others argue it's merely defending the right to vote. sheila jackson lee joining us live from her district in houston. thank you for your time.

>> it's very nice to be with you. >> department of justice says 81 of texas' 254 counties do not have place where people can get a driver's license. there's not an operational driver's license. to me that seems to be the tip of the problem here. if you're going to require people to have this i.d., you should have the access available. what are your concerns here? >> well, the justice department decision was thoughtful, well reviewed decision after seeking to determine whether the voting rights law in texas or the voter i.d. law was correct. frankly, this is a reflection of the law, the voting rights act which says one person, one vote and as texas sought to implement or put in place a voter i.d., picture i.d. they didn't think

it through. there seem to be under pinnings of trying to dumb down or depress the minority vote. 81 counties without a d.p.s. asking the home bound or those that are seniors who are also impacted in a devastating manner to find other ways to get a voter i.d. or picture i.d., telling students that if you have a state issued student i.d. from a university that is accredited that you cannot use it, however you can use a concealed weapons permit points to certain populations will be allowed to vote and others will not. this is a very good decision. we only have 12.8 million voters. 2.4 million voters don't have a picture i.d. and don't have ways of getting it. some don't have marriage

licenses. this is a right decision. >> some of the numbers the, hispanic voters are 4550% more likely to not have driver's license. keith is from greg county texas. he's a republican chairman. he said that this is playing the race card. he says all of this, once again, i'm sorry so say, people playing the race card. it's time for that to end. i'm tired of the democratic party playing the race card and calling the republicans racist when they are the ones playing the race card. are you and the democrats in the state of texas playing the race card? >> the department of justice represents the entire united states of america whether it was department of justice under president bush or president reagan or president clinton. they have an obligation to follow the law. that's what they did. let me explain that i have ever represent for difference of opinion. our own attorney general in the state of texas indicated in the last decade they only prosecuted

and were able to prosecute 50 cases in the last decade. that's five cases per year. >> do you take offense? does that particularly bother you? >> it bothers me because of the lack of understanding. i don't waste time on people's opinion, but it bothers me because people will be denied the right to vote because of misunderstanding and mischaracterization. i'm enthusiastic about the department of justice decision and enthusiastic that they will pursue this in court. this gentleman will find out it's not race question when he sees millions and thousands upon thousands be denied the right to vote. we have a presidential election. i don't care whether the voters go out and vote republican or democratic or independent. i want them to be able to vote and there's no evidence that people show up and try to impersonate another voter. this is wrong headed, misdirected. i hope we will pursue this and i

hope the supreme court will look in a fair manner at the number who is will be impacted. let me say this, the state did not send in numbers regarding african-americans. they didn't send in numbers regarding asian or seniors or home bound or disable persons who may lack opportunities to get a picture voter i.d. this is not a joke and this is not race based except for the fact that the voting rights act says no barrier should bar a citizen of the united states from voting regardless of race or ethnicity. it's the right decision to make. >> thank you for your time. obviously, this is not going anywhere any time soon. thank you. british police are arrested rebecca brooks. brooks and her husband were among tix people arrested in connection with raids in the phone hacking scandal. the couple are being held on suspicion of destroying some kind of e-mail evidence.

hundreds. are there in uganda. they have been forced out. they quickly say they are in a weakened state. that's not the point we get from the video. if they are in weakened state, then why is there this urgency. there's important issues. >> one of things that raised your anger level was this whole notion that people with click on and think they have done enough to save the world and save these children. i want to play what the makers said about this slacktivist question. >> i understand why a lot of people are wondering if this some slick, fly by night slacktivist thing. it's not at all. it's connected to real deep, thoughtful, very intentional and

strategic campaign. >> you get the mike. >> the people that are inside are doing is thoughtful, working hard, doing old-school activism or attempting to. the people that they are connecting to, the audience is slacktivist. >> why are they to blame? >> what does that do? just knowing and caring doesn't do anything. the whole world know and care about bin laden. did that capture him? no. actual military wordy. the world caring about him didn't. when the world kind of stopped caring then he got caught. the two things are not connected. >> i don't connect about that argument. the second his name was said live on television, most people never heard that name just like with joseph kony.

john staurt and others have pointed that maybe the media is hating on the kony movement because they have exposed when notary public video of us have been hit 73 million times. there's a bit of envy here. >> i think the word hating is far overused. we are not jealous. we are breathing and taking stock of what are they doing and not doing. millions of people who never knew about kony and never really interested in activism are introduced to these ideas and this passionate and emotional plea. slow down. just caring is not enough. >> all right. thank you very much. we'll be right back. machine oh! welcome back to "news nation." there's something happening at the big music festival in texas. it's got a lot of people upset. marketing company has attached mobile wi-fi to homeless people. the catch is you go over to the homeless person, give them a few bucks and you get the password log in to log onto your iphone, your $700 ipad. some believe it's exploiting the homeless. it's not minimum wage. they are being used for this ad agency and others to profit. there are others that bring up the issue of radiation exposure.
