president of columbia, president santos. lan tin america is on the road to giving jobs and hope to those who need it most, and that can only be good news for this country. that's "hardball" for now, "politicsnation" with al sharpton starts right now. >> welcome to "politicsnation," i'm al sharpton, tonight's lead, mitt romney found himself a quiet room where he could say what he really thinks about government, fairness, and mothers. he had a exclusive fundraiser last night in florida. no reporters were allowed but the speakers were clearly heard on the street. for example, his candid response to comments about the war on moms. he called it a gift to the
3:01 pm
campaign. and his wife said it was an early birthday present for someone to be critical of me being a mother, and that was really a defining moment and i loed loved it. that doesn't match the outrage we saw last week. the colleagues with chris hayes uncovered video from romney a few years ago showing he has a different view of nonworking moms if they're poor. >> just three months before, we said stay at home moms are all working moms. he wants moms with kids, you need to go to work. >> people said that's heartless, i said no, i'm willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work fp will cost the state more providing that day care, but i
3:02 pm
want the individuals to have the dignity of work. >> so romney thinks that stay at home moms are working moms unless they're on welfare, in which case they don't have dignity. that's curious. he said in his book welfare without work erodes the spirit and sense of self-wort of the recipient. and it conditions the children of nonworking parents to be unproductive in life. kids raised on welfare are doomed to be lazy? meanwhile he launched back into his claims about how hard women have been hit by the recession. >> 92% to 93% of the jobs lost have been lost by women. >> this claims that been debunked countless times, but he
3:03 pm
never let that get in the way of bad spin. i have guests with me now, thank you both for your time tonight. >> thank you for having us on. >> congresswoman pass, what's your response to romney's double standard on nonworking moms? >> first of all, i think it's very interesting, him talking about it being a gift. it's almost as if the continues exploitation of women is a gift to him. it's an example of how romney has no clu how average and working people live and how poor family vs. to survive in tough economic times. people on and off public assistant are because they lost a job, health care, or because one of their children was sick. that's why they end up being without employment. it's as though people with tough
3:04 pm
economic times don't know how to work. the fact of the mat sere people who have tough economic times work harder than most other folks he is talking about. >> chris, i think this tape that you uncovered i think really takes this argument somewhere serious. and it really flips this in terms of where some of the romney supporters are saying. they were outraged that the inference was that women at home working is not working. but romney's position is women at home not working and on welfare. there is something to be implied there. >> they lack the dignity of work, right. the point is -- >> you can't have it both ways. >> you can't, let's remember this is not a random cable pund
3:05 pm
pundit, this is actually policy he supported. this double standard we have in the way that we conceive of what counts at work. that double standard plays out in terms of how to we treat women at the bottom of the scale and at the top top. everybody understood the context, they justmented to pretend they didn't. >> i think what is so profound about you finding this tape, is that it's not that he supported it, he advocating it. and congresswoman pass, this is not a pundit or somebody not connected to romney, not somebody on his campaign, this is him. and he is basically saying if you're a working mom -- i mean a nonworking mom but you have money, it's a hard thing to raise kids, but if you're on welfare it's not a hard thing and a full-time job. >> exactly, and you must,
3:06 pm
whether you're working on a job or working at home, work should always be respected and valued. as a working mother, i know how difficult that is. so a job inside a home and outside a home is still work. you can't say it's only valid when you're wealthy. some of the working women that he is referring to, people who have worked hard all throughout their life, and they slight hit a tough time. so they might not have the two jobs which is the job outside of the house and the job inside of the house temporarily, but they should certainly not be disrespected and that's what he did. >> they tried to claim on fox news sunday that defunding planned parenthood isn't really defunding planted parenthood, watch this. >> defunding from a federal budget perspective is not the same thing. it's not fair to say that not
3:07 pm
having funding for planned parenthood is defunding planned parenthood. >> he could not get rid of a private charity. he could not entirely defund it, he could cut it off from federal dollars and that would have a significant impact. he is indicating the maximum use of his power. >> what they're really doing is trying to back away from some of the anti-women comments. >> republicans thought they could turn planned parenthood into a scary boogy man or woman that they could run against. what they thought and had to learn time and time again, over the past year particularly, is that people think fondly of planned parenthood because it
3:08 pm
plays a crucial role developing health services to women, sfligt. >> congresswoman bass, he has a lot more to get out of, part of what he stood for, he supports per sonhood, he wanted to defund planned parenthood as we just sad, and he supports the ryan budget that slashes spending that women rely on. so he has a lot to walk back from. and now thanks to chris hayes, he has to explain how he is talking about a certain class of women working at home apparently. if we go by this tape, he doesn't shaf the same feeling for women raising three, four, or five kids at home. he has a little walking back to do. >> exactly, but she consistent.
3:09 pm
you have to give that to him. if you're talking about attacking poor women, get rid of hud, he's talking about cutting back and getting rid of the department of education. the class attack is very consistent. it just happened to play out on women this week. again, to say that a poor woman at home is not working, but a wealthy woman home taking care of her kids is work. we value the work of the wealthy, duo not value the work of people who are low income. >> chris, we had, as i said at this fundraiser, you could hear in the street what he was saying. he said that hud may not be the there anymore. he also talked about needing to reach a broader audience than fox news.
3:10 pm
he said, "his campaign was well watched by fox a but they were watched by true believers and he needed a wider audience for voters that will decide the election in november" do they know that women and independents don't watch fox? that's just the home crowd. i have to talk to the broad america, i can't talk to fox if i want to talk to women and independents. >> each of us would be only too delighted to have the former governor -- >> i would cancel all of my guests. >> we could do it for two full hours. that shows -- that's an obvious fact. the campaign understands they have dug themselves a hole in running this primary. the new polling out today that
3:11 pm
shows a huge gender gap troubles them. they understand they have to outperform john mccain, otherwise, it's not going to happen. and they coming out of this primary and they have a uphill battle against those constituencies. >> i'm sure if you had him back on it would be a etch-a-sketch moment. >> mr. romney any night you want, i'll give you the whole hour, i'll only ask three questions, i want you to just be able to talk. congresswoman bass and chris hayes, thank you for your time. >> of course, you can catch up with chris hayes weekends from 8 a.m. to 10:00 eastern. what did willard say when he thought we weren't listening,
3:12 pm
and new details at the secret service sex scandal. allegations of prostitution and misbehavior from the men who are supposedly protecting the president. >> and my interview with trayvon's parents talking about today's big news that could shape the trial of their son's killer. you're watching "politicsnation" on msnbc i mean he could teach. he was there for us, even if we needed him in college. you could call him, you had his phone number. he was just focused on making sure we were gonna be successful. he would never give up on any of us.

court they're not doing tactics like that. we had to wait so long just to get to first base. we pray that's not the case. it should not take any longer than any other trial. >> are you concerned how it will affect you if they try to delay this into next year? >> i think it's been declayed enough with the arrest coming 40 plus days after the crime was committed. and it just goes to show further that, you know, it's a fight just trying to get justice. >> what do you think sybrina? >> i think they may be trying to delay it but we will be steadfast and continue to support the cause. >> one of the things i thought about last week, we hadn't seen each other since the day they announced the arrest, it's amazing when i first met you, we
