ohio. the vice president kicking off obama offense this morning delivering a one-two punch to mitt romney. joining me for today's political power panel, managing director and john berry presidential strategist. and mrs. summers, political reporter from "politico." great to have you all here. kiki, want to start with you. releasing this ad, all in the timing, i guess. take a look at this. >> russia, number one geopolitical foe. >> he acts like the cold war is going on, russia is our major political adversary. i don't know where he's bun. >> this seems to be in response to senator rubio's speech slamming the administration. does this show how ready to rumble the campaign is when they go swiftly seeking to inoculate that argument.

>> i don't know it's about that as much as really putting big topics on the table for conversation and not ignoring big moments like mitt romney had when he said something like that. he put a big idea on the table and it's perfectly legitimate and it's really important to come back and say, here is the flaw in that idea. there's a huge flaw in that idea. what it shows you have a president and vice president prepared to say why they are the best prepared and best capable to move our country forward for a second term. >> john, president obama gave an interview to rolling stone magazine and had this to stay. i don't think their nominee is going to be able to suddenly say, everything i've said for the last six months, i didn't mean. i'm assuming he meant it. when you're running for president, people are paying attention to what you're saying. romney was forced to lean way to the right to secure this nomination. is this going to be romney's achilles heel going forward? >> i think he's been in the

center. what happened during the primary, he was accused of being a massachusetts moderate. i think that label will stick and stand up pretty well during the general election. he is seen as a centrist. he is a centrist. the effort to brand him a conservative by the obama administration will fall. >> isn't that in direct contrast to his statement calling himself a severely conservative governor? he's the one that put those words out there, not the obama campaign. >> which was widely ridiculed. most voters don't see him as a severe conservative. i would reject one notion. the problem for the president is not mitt romney. the problem for the president is his own record. he has started campaigning since last year. he doesn't have any serious accomplishments over the last six months. that's going to hurt him in the general election. >> the obama campaign announced first rallies, as i said in the open coming up on may 5th. 2011 them in the important swing states of virginia and ohio. both won by the president in '08. now they are tossups when they show everybody the new nbc battleground map.

how important are these two states and what does it mean, the strategy of it all if the obama campaign wants to start there. >> it's not surprising those are the two states the obama campaign would pick to kick this off. these are states like you said that obama did win in 2008. i think ohio will be a very interesting race. half of the electorate is working class white voters. that is an area both mitt romney and president obama have struggled to connect with. that race will be particularly interesting and says quite a bit about the strategy the campaign is looking at moving forward. >> as we talk about the strategy, the president's stops on the 5th will be at two colleges as he continues to do what he did before, court the youth vote. this comes as gop super pac. american crossroads just released this ad. take a look at this. >> obama! obama!

>> all right. the celebrity president but driving home the point it's tough for college kids out there with the accrued debt getting out of college, aren't a lot of jobs. kiki our youth pollster said it is a critical voekt bloc discounted in other elections before. the president needs them for re-election. this is a group that's really not as enthused as it once was. >> this is a group trying to figure what their path forward is, where is opportunity. despite what john said, have you a president looking up and saying this is what we have to do and this is what we're doing, an economic plan, a jobs plan. you see things that appeal to the college kids that are the right thing to do. how do you make sure they are not coming out of college with horrific senses of debt, without opportunity. it goes really to the issue of the whole argument about the economy. you know, we talk about the women's vote and youth vote. this is a vote and argument

about the economy. that's what people want to know. where are you going to move forward on this. the president has laid out an agenda for jobs, moved forward on that agenda. that's what people are waiting to hear from mitt romney. they have heard about the big corporate story he has but haven't heard about his plan moving forward except for his support for the paul ryan plan. >> john, do you think this is an opening for mitt romney to seek out the youth vote? >> the college kids are going to be paying for the obama administration for years. the debt piled on their backs, the fact they can't get a job when they graduate from college. you'd be an idiot if you graduate from college and vote for four more years for obama. they have been a disaster if you're a young person. this is why young people are turning against this administration. they are going to find something else. kiki is right, the romney campaign has to line out something for young folks. but the number one thing is the economy and it's been a disaster for college graduates, recent college graduates. >> the thing about republicans what they did before, they attacked the president's

celebrity in the last election cycle when he was just the senator. that is senator john mccain comparing john mccain to paris hilton. do you think they can make that stick now? >> i think the crux of this argument is style versus substance. if the republicans can project president obama as the guy who has all the style, the hip guy, but mitt romney has the ability to be a serious conservative who is able to lead this country, take the very serious challenge of being president, i think that could have legs. if that's the tack they take, i expect them to push the theme, mitt romney is a conservative throw-back, out of step with what's going on today. >> do you agree with that. is a person a politician of conviction as opposed to mitt romney being a flip-flopper. >> here is the difference. and style, substance, reporters and the rest of us will talk about who gives a good speech and who doesn't. but at the end of the day,

barack obama can look up and say, you know what, i'm the guy in the face of a lot of criticism said i'm going to stand up for the american automobile industry and the jobs it creates and it did and it's paid off. the banking system is important but wall street doesn't get a free ride. he stood up and pushed for reform and got it. you know what, if i can get into pakistan, we can get osama bin laden i'm going to do it. that's a record. that's a record about protecting the economy, our borders. mitt romney hasn't laid that out, young or old, black or white, female or male, he has to come up with what the vision is of him as opposed to the negative. young people aren't going to come out, constituencies won't come out because of anger. there will be some but not many. there has to be a reason. >> his primary path, looking to reconcile the rivals rick perry announced his endorsement saying he won through hard work.

he's giving that endorsement after endorsing newt gingrich the first time around. the texas governor didn't have such kind words for him over the past few months. let's remind everybody. >> in 1996 when your adviser steve forbes was running on a flat tax, mitt romney said it was a tax plan for fat cats. what would say to him? >> i guess he should look temperature mirror. i consider him to be a fat cat. >> i get it about job creation. i understand the difference between venture capital and vulture capitalism. >> these are etch a sketch moments they pretend never happened so they can get on the stump and embrace mitt romney for president. >> hillary clinton said a lot of negative things about president obama and now she's secretary of state. the fact of the matter is the hard right didn't like mitt romney because they thought he was too moderate. right now being moderate in the center of the country is a good thing for the general election. i'd like to point back to the

edwards home. he's under cross-examination. he admits he fabricated thing. how much damage does this do to the prosecution's case, his credibility really being in question. >> andrew young is the foundation of the prosecution's house. what the defense is going to try to do is wash away that house like the thunder and lightning and rain around here. his credibility is critical. >> there's a storm in north carolina, literally and figuratively. salaciousness aside, though, a lot has been discussed. it begs the question, though, about what elizabeth edwards may have known about this affair. how big of a role elizabeth edwards memory, legacy is going to play in this trial when it comes to the impact of this jury. >> it will definitely play a large role. it's a tawdry cases. that's where the prosecution wants it. what john edwards knew and what he did about it counts. so elizabeth edwards is very much a part of this case. >> they are saying, at least the defense is saying, just because

you may not like him and he's a two-timer, that kind of thing, doesn't mean he's criminally responsible for what he has been pinned with. can the prosecution prove hiding this affair broke the law? >> that's what they are trying to do. the prosecution is depending on the jury not liking him but also saying he's not just unlikable, he's a criminal in what he did. they are hoping the jury agrees and lumps those two things together. >> all right. so andrew young's wife is also expected to be questioned by the prosecutors. why would they have her testify? do you think that's to solidify what her husband is saying on the stand? >> the defense is chipping away at andrew young bit by bit. with every chip it grows into reasonable doubt. andrew young's wife will corroborate, add some details. she's a part of this scheme. >> steven, john edwards as we

take a look at this video from northern spain. heavy winds pushed a passenger jet back and forth as it tried to land. luckily pilots were able to correct it before it touched down. amazing stuff. all right. in a few minutes police in fayetteville, north carolina will hold a news conference on the search for a missing u.s. soldier. a new search got under way for kelli bordeaux. kelli vanished a few weeks ago. this morning her husband mike spoke out for the first time since kelli vanished as well as being joined by her brother. i asked mike how up to date police are keeping him on the search for his missing wife. >> i'm in the loop. i know as much as they want to tell me. they do know they are being very

helpful. the detectives, fayetteville police department, the military, even volunteers are helping. i appreciate all the help. we need all the help we can get to get her home safe, you know. >> mike, one thing that's part of these investigations is looking at family members. i know police concentrated some of their investigation on you. explain where you were when you learned of kelli's disappearance. >> i was in kissimmee, florida, visiting my parents. i was taking a little time down there, vacation or whatnot. you know, i was down there when i got the news. once i got the news monday morning, i decided to pack my bags and drive up here and help any way i can and be here for kelli when she comes home. >> mike, original reports you are estranged from your wife but you refute those. how are you trying to get the proper information about your marriage out there. >> no.

welcome back, everybody. police in alabama make an arrest once believed to be a racially motivated mob beating. he turned himself into police yesterday. police say he was one of several men who attacked a man over a dispute about neighborhood kids playing basketball in the street. the case gained national attention because the victim was white, assailants black. witnesses say attackers mentioned the name of trayvon martin. the victim 40-year-old matthew owens has been upgraded to fair condition. trayvon martin bringing to the

forefront cases around the country, comparisons made to trayvon martin. joining me, editor of the grio.com. first case, baltimore, maryland, getting a lot of attention where a black teen was walking through a predominantly jewish neighborhood. two brothers on a watch patrol. they get out. apparently a confrontation ensues. what's the back story here and what was their role being neighborhood watchmen for what they should have done. >> this was another case, informal neighborhood watch. these men spotted the young man from the car, got out of the car and beat him up. it's compared to the trayvon martin case for the obvious reasons it's again a case of neighborhood watch. an interracial crime, which, of course, statistically is unusual. people again are saying they profiled this young man, felt he shouldn't be in the neighborhood because he was black. >> the teen went to police on his own accord after this beating, was able to identify

who the men were. >> a third man, too. a third man in the car that wound up testifying against the other two. >> in this instance it was something where they learned about the situation, not just neighborhood watch calling in to police giving iwitness reports, they are getting out to confront people saying get out of this neighborhood. >> yeah, i think it's interesting. there was a time in new york when you would have this occurrence. you would have a case of neighborhoods where one race of people, somebody from another race came into the neighborhood and there would be beatings. this felt like a '90s thing. we're seeing cases of people profiling those they don't think should be in their neighborhood. it's chilling to think we're in the place. >> 22-year-old justin patterson killed in january 2011, his parents wondering why that case did not get the same attention as trayvon martin. i think a good thing to remind everybody the trayvon martin didn't get the attention in the

beginning. >> it was 10 days before anyone knew his name. he was buried in miami with no media attention at all. only after his parents contacted attorneys and got civil rights organizations involved. in the other case, georgia case, you had two young men with two underaged young women in their trailer home. a man who had taken in one of the young women, a 60-year-old man who was white, caught these two crunk myoung men, caught th the house, chased them out. not clear whether he shoved him on the way out the door but he wound up shooting them to death. the families of the two brothers are saying why isn't this getting the same attention. they called naacp and said they aren't getting involved. >> great to see you this morning. thank you for your time. >> thank you. just please, please to the person or persons who have isabel, tell us your demands.

him. on the heels of the secret service scandal involving prostitutes in colombia, there are new reports of a similar instance in march of last year. a local news station in seattle reporting a secret service advance team in el salvador took strippers back to their hotel rooms. the secret service said the recent investigation in cartagena generated several new stories. any information brought to our attention that can be assessed as credible will be followed up. white house to reauthorize 1999 violence against women act. the senate is debating and could vote on it as early as today. while urging a reauthorization senator john mccain spoke out about the so-called war against women. >> we face an abundance of hard choices. divisive slogans and declaring of phony wars are intended to avoid those hard choices and to escape paying a political price

for doing so. >> why on earth when three women are killed every day and nine women are injured sometimes to the point of almost losing their life, why on earth when a bill has brought down domestic violence by 53% would there be objection? >> a group of gop women in the house plan to introduce an alternative version of the violence again women act. a controversial story out of atlanta, religious versus reproductive rights. a teacher says she was fired from a roman catholic school for using in vitro fertilization for trying to get pregnant. the church says it's a sin. now she's suing for discrimination and she spoke with ann curry earlier today. >> it's been a very emotional time for both of us, actually my whole family. we've circled trying to wrap our minds around what's happened here, just because i was such a devoted teacher and i loved my

job so much and just trying to expand our family. to have this happen, it was awful. >> wnbc's katy tur has more on this from indiana. >> tom, she was just trying to have a baby but she said she was fired from her catholic teaching job because she was getting infertility treatments. now she's skewing both the school and the diocese. 32-year-old emily was medically diagnosed with infertility after the birth of her first child. wanting more children, she and her husband turned to in vitro fertilization. at the time she was a literature and language teacher at st. vincent depaul in fort wayne. she told the school she was going to get ivf. for a year she tried to get treatment but didn't. when she asked for time off for a second hour, she was told her contract wouldn't be renewed.

she says she met with the parish pastor asking him to reconsider. but according to her recently filed lawsuit, he told her no. she was a grave, immoral sinner. several months later she appealed to the bishop kevin rhodes. according to her lawsuit the bishop refused saying in vitro fertilization is an intrinsic evil which means no circumstances can justify it. mary ann case is a university of chicago law professor. she says a suit like this is far from cut and dry. >> no parts here that are just ordinary legal business. there are people with very strong stakes, personal ideological, religious. >> emily claims she's a victim of discrimination. the school refused to comment. in a statement the diocese of fort wayne south bend denies there was any discrimination, rather than that it is clear policies requiring teachers in

its schools must as a condition of employment, have knowledge of and respect for the catholic faith and abide by the tenets of the catholic church. the diocese says it supports fertility treatment for employees but not in vitro fertilization which violates the church's right to life stance, adding the diocese views the core issue raised in the lawsuit as a challenge to the diocese's right as a religion employer to make religion based decisions consistent with its religious standards on an impartial basis. in her lawsuit she said no embryos were destroyed during the ivf process. she's now not only looking for her job back but compensation for emotional distress and mental ank witch. thomas. >> nbc's katy tur. thanks so much. hounding patients in the emergency room. one of the nation's largest debt collectors under intense scrutiny over accusations employees are shaking down

patients for payments on bills sometimes before treatment. minnesota's attorney general says it has been imbedding employees in 60 hospitals showing up at patient's bed sides and demand payment as they are recovering. i'm joined by jessica silver greenberg, reporter for "the new york times." torn general says they may have violated federal privacy laws that safeguard data. based on your reporting, do these accusations hold weight? >> i reviewed the documents the attorney general had against accretive health. there are some pretty galling instances of sharing data between the front end debt collector and the people who manage debt collection and billing at accretive hospitals and debt collection on the back end. i'm not a lawyer and i don't

pretend to know what does or does not violate patient privacy laws. there are well documented instances of collectors having access to thousands of sensitive patient health records, including things like -- >> a big hipaa violation. >> which would be a hipaa violation. >> when we talk about the company itself, it has not responded to tuesday's allegation beyond a brief statement. i want to read it for everybody. we have a great track record of helping hospitals enhance their quality of care. that's it. that's all accretive has to say about this. if these accusations prove to be true, lawyers get pinned with being ambulance chasers, these people get pinned with being ambulance greeters. how much does that change the face of what debt collectors in these hospitals are going to do for the future? >> the truth is this is a very fine line between what's illegal and what's just icky. so much of the collection attempts that accretive does in

the hospitals, as far as i know, are not illegal. so you can demand money at a patient's bedside. you can try to get them to pay outstanding bills before they receive care as long as that does not interfere with emergency lifesaving care. you can do a number of these things. you can set quotas for employees so they try to recoup as much money from patients as possible. the questions of legality go around whether or not employees are identifying themselves clearly as debt collection employees and also then the issue we talked about before, which is the sharing of health data. >> it's pretty amazing. great reporting. jessica silver-greenberg with "new york times." thank you. i appreciate that. i want to pass along a programming note. my colleague tamron hall will have on minnesota's attorney general, that coming up on "news nation" in the 2:00 p.m. hour. a cub scout den mother allegedly fired because she's a lesbian. her fight for change getting support from hundreds of

now it's grown into this national rallying cry. jennifer tyrell was her son's boy scout leader. when they learned she was gay they kicked her out citing a long-standing policy. now jennifer and her supporters are petitioning to change things. she has a lot of support behind her including glad, joining me is jennifer, her son cruz and the newly minted president of g.l.a.d. jennifer i want to start wuchlt this has thrust your family into something that was not a highlight to talk about because this was a painful experience. i want to read the online statement you have in your online petition. the revocation of my membership came shortly after i was elected treasurer of my pack and uncovered inconsistencies in the pack's finances. you're this excellent den mother, working with the scouts, cruz in it for a year.

do you think this is really a scapegoat issue because you brought to their attention budgetary concerns and now they are kicking you out because you're gay. >> i don't know for sure. i can't speak to what they are thinking but i'm inclined to belie believe, so yes. >> when you got the news, what was your immediate reaction? >> we were devastated. the parents were devastated. it's unfair. >> one thing that's been important to you, you didn't want the kids, other kids in the cub scouts to think you abandoned them. >> absolutely. that was my biggest worry. >> how has the community received you in all this. >> they have been amazing. the response has been tremendous. actually very humbled and appreciative of all the support. i'm still in constant contact with all those parents. they continue to send messages

of support and e-mails. even speaking to the media on my behalf. everyone is pulling through. i appreciate that. >> not only community support but national support with the online campaign at change.org. g. ll a.d. is on your side. as the new president of g.l.a.d., you probably know this the supreme court ruled in favor of the boy scouts of america they had a right to do this. the scouts responding saying scouting and majority of parents it serves does not believe it is the right forum for children to becomafter wear of the issue of sexual orientation or engage in discussions about being gay. such complex matters should be with parents, caregivers or spiritual advisers at the appropriate time or in the right setting. when you see the fact scouts coming out like that, the supreme court on their side, how do you want to pick up this fight and carry on? >> well, i don't think that the boy scouts need to be forced by

the supreme court to do the right thing. i mean, i think the majority of americans know this is wrong. >> absolutely. >> i think you can only look at her story, which frankly is very moving to me to know that it's time for this to change. >> is that something, jennifer? if the boy scouts were to embrace you back, would you go back? >> if they were to embrace me back as a settlement to this, no. the policy needs to change to include all americans. we're americans and we're denied basic rights. >> i want to point out to everybody, zach walls, an eagle scout spoke last year in iowa, made national headlines speaking about his two moms. he's an eagle scout saying the stance is elective given the fact his mom was the first lesbian den mother for his troop. there is a precedent around the country where it's different in certain circumstances. cruz, i want to talk to you,

buddy, real fast. how do you feel about your mom not involved in the scouts anymore and you don't get involved in the scouts anymore? >> sad. >> would you like to be able to go back to the boy scouts? >> yes. >> how do you think the kids reacted to your mom being the den mom? were they all proud of the work she was doing? >> yes. >> yes. >> and when you think about the fact right now you don't get to be part of the cub scouts for reasons that are way, way out of your control, this seems pretty simple to you, doesn't it, that your mom should be able to be the den mother? yes? let's hope we can get this rectified. i know this has been trying on you and your family. this is an important issue bringing national attention to a serious topic. i see it's getting you really upset. i'm sorry about that. >> it's 2012, it's time to change. >> herndon, i know about you being the newly elected president for glaad. i'm not talking out of school
