's we begin this morning with exit strategy. president obama is meeting for a second day with nato leaders and afghanistan's president karzai in chicago as they develop a road map to wind down the war by 2014. meantime, thousands of activists marched resulting in dozens of arrests. nick bogart reports from chicago. >> reporter: blocks from the nato summit, police and protesters clash. police using batons and pepper spray. some anti-nato demonstrators throwing paint and other objects at officers. some grabbing the batons and turning them back on the police. at least two dozen were led away. some bloodied. the clash did not disturb the summit itself, members proving so-called smart defense plans trying to lower nato's costs in tough economic times & uniting

behind a plan for afghanistan to pull nato troops off the front lines next year and substantially out the country by 2014. >> there would be no rush for the exits. we would stay committed and see it three. >> we're confident we're on the right track. >> reporter: protesters who thronged chicago's streets for much of the day, not impressed. >> reporter: nato leaders argue the alliance is strong and necessary. they dined together in chicago's soldier field football stadium with michelle obama hosting leader spouses at the city's main art museum. the summit the nato has held outside of washington wraps up monday. in chicago nick bogert for nbc news. what could be the worst clashes in beirut since 2008 are fueling fears the deadly conflict in neighboring syria is bleeding across the border. six people were reportedly wounded as gunmen launched

rockets and machine guns on the capital this morning. the clashes erupted in beirut hours after an anti-syrian cleric and his bodyguard were shot dead. security forces say they sped through a checkpoint in lebanon. some residents in nearby tripoli burned tires and blocked roads in protests. the lebanese army issued a statement saying "they deeply regretted the incident and a committee will investigate." well, the man found responsible for the 1988 lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people will be buried today in libya. in august 2009 abdel baset al megrahi returned to libya after he was freed by the government in scotland on humanitarian grounds. he had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and was expected to die within three months but it took two years and nine months. al omemegrahi was the only pers convicted

in the crash of pan am flight 103 over lockerbie scotland when a terrorist bomb exploded on board. he insisted he was innocent, but some families of the victims are convinced that other people and other countries were also involved. well, after what one official described as the worst earthquake to hit northeast italy in roughly 700 years, at least 4 people are dead, and many centuries-old buildings have collapsed. the 6.0 quake shook several small towns and killed four overnight factory workers in three separate locations. in addition, two women apparently died of heart attacks brought on by shock. the quake hit a region of italy known for its cheeses and roughly $65 million worth was reportedly lost. makeshift tent camps have sprung up in many area villages as sharp aftershocks have left residents uneasy about staying in their own homes. here's your first look at some of the other news going on in america today. in florida two men had been arrested in a vicious beat of a u.s. army sergeant. the victim's car had broken down

and he was walking home when police say the robbers asked him for a dollar. well, he reached into his pocket to give them the money, and he was attacked. police are still looking for two other men in connection with the assault. the soldier has been released from the hospital. well, near miami a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing along a busy street. it clipped a few trees but authorities praised the pilot who quickly veered the aircraft into the center median to avoid hitting any cars. the plane was just about to land in a nearby airport when it started having engine trouble. and finally in kansas just remarkable video here. more than a dozen tornadoes ripped through areas of wichita this weekend. look at that. they got pretty close. one shredded phone lines. as dramatic as this video was, thankfully no one was hurt. however, there were several homes that were damaged. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, we check in with nbc

meteorologist bill karins. did you have a nice weekend. >> beautiful. many areas of the country were gorgeous. a tropical storm off the east coast but there was a lot of beautiful wirth to be had. hopefully you enjoyed it. that tornado had winds of 140 miles per hour, an ef-3 on the fujita scale. what we are looking at on the radar is tropical storm alberta. little storm, very tiny, the cloud shield only extends 100 miles from the center, really no effects from the storm whatsoever even in jacksonville, florida, which is very close to the center of the storm because it's a very weak storm. just thunderstorms in the middle of it. it's more or less just a historical fact that formed so early, soes close to the east coast, only relevance it has. it's going to go off the eastern seaboard and dissipate. little effect if anyone for on the east coast, maybe enhanced

rip current threat in georgia and florida today. we're still looking nice in many areas. cold front went through, numerous showers and thunderstorms and produced that tornado we saw. warm along the gulf and looks like new england is going to hold on to at least one more nice day before clouding and moisture begin to slide your way. some of that rain has already moved into delaware, maryland, we got showers around washington, d.c. little area of moderate rain near trenton will move into western new jersey and more rain to be had just off the east coast, the beautiful weather you saw in areas from d.c. to new york and new england, looks like it will slowly go away throughout the day. have your umbrella in central jersey especially in trenton heading northward. saern seaboard, showers and storms, beautiful from kansas city to minneapolis. this is the time of year you have to appreciate it, the 70s and low humidity will slowly be a thing of the past in the

nbc's frances kuo has more. >> reporter: on friday the jury for the edwards campaign corruption trail started weighing all the evidence presented during 17 days of testimony. shortly after beginning deliberations, the eight men and four women asked to review several exhibits. they concerned the more than $700,000 provided by heiress rachel bunny. they asked for a blackboard and master list of all the exhibits in the case. >> that means they're settling in and will do it in a sequential fashion. >> reporter: hundreds of documents that will help the jury decide whether the funds give ton edwards to help hide his mistress, rielle hunter constitute an illegal campaign contribution. >> i think this jury is being asked to chart the outer limits of what is potentially a campaign contribution. >> reporter: and decide whether it believes john edwards or his former aide andrew young as the fate of the former presidential

candidate rests in the jury's hands. frances kuo, nbc news. first look at all wall street will tick off the day. the dow opens at 12,369, the s&p dropped 1295 and the nasdaq dropped 34. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei added 22 but in hong kong the hang seng was down 29. well, severs start the week with concerns about the new facebook stock and the continuing debt crisis in greece. the leaders at the g-8 summit meeting at camp david in maryland strongly urged greece to stay in the eurozone and promised to do whatever is needed to solve the debt crisis. well, this could be a crucial week for facebook after friday's ipo, which went as high as $45 but quickly faded to close only 23 cents above the $38 opening price. the nasdaq market had troubles and problem s wis with facebook trades and is now

promising to revamp its technology systems for handling stock offerings. and facebook founder mark zuckerberg changed his status to married. after a surprise wedding saturday to his longtime girlfriend, dr. priscilla chan, who just graduated from medical school. yahoo! says it will sell up to half of its stake in the chinese internet company alibaba for more than $700 billion and give most of its money to the shareholders. gas prices fell another 6 cents over the last two weeks bringing the national average to $3.78 a gallon. the housing market in the u.s. appears to be rebounding and reports on home prices and mortgage application figures. jpmorgan chase will be the focus of a hearing this week by the senate banking committee into the billions of dollars of losses in derivatives trading. and finally, the earliest known yankee jersey worn by babe ruth was auctioned for $4.4 million
