without retirement health care benefits and so on, when you know, so many have lost their jobs. >> what do you say to steve ratner who was in the administration. he on "morning joe" made the same point that the business of this kind of bain capital and what these funds do is to take over companies, some win, some lose. they're in the business of not creating jobs but of creating money for their shareholders. >> that's the case that mitt romney's been making. >> mitt romney was making the case as ratner pointed out inappropriately and inaccurately that he was supposed to be creating jobs. that's not what they do. but is it fair to attack them for a company that went bankrupt perhaps after he left? >> he was still the ceo of bain when that bankruptcy was filed. so it's not fair. he takes credit for everything that happened after he left that he considers positive and tries to walk away from this. he can't walk away from this.
10:15 am
he was there when they loaded this company with debt and when they filed for bankruptcy. he shared in the proceeds of that when they made money even as workers lost not just their jobs but also their retirement benefits. and that is -- that's not right. this is what people -- people admire success and understand that their businesses succeed, businesses fail. but what they don't like is when people at the top walk away with enormous riches and people down the line are left holding the bag. >> why does the campaign have fund-raisers at hedge fund -- >> because not every deal is like that deal. not every investor operates that way. not every investor as in the case of ampad which we've talked about today files for bankruptcy, loads a company with debt, files for bankruptcy, makes $100 million on a $5 million investment and then stiffs their creditors 99 cents who are left. >> so you're not taking money
10:16 am
from any wall street or hedge fund guys who actually have been involved in bad deals? >> there's only one guy who's running for president of the united states and offering this as his credential to be president. we're having a fundamental debate about how we build the economy. mitt romney thinks the economy was fine in the last decade and wants 0 go back to those is policies. tax breaks for the wealthy, letting wall street write its own rules. his business theory, his economic theory was reflected in some of these deals. that may work well for him and he's been very good at making money for himself and for his partners. but the question is, is that good for the american economy? is it good for the middle class? we're going to continue to prosecute ta case. >> what about this suit by notre dame and these other dioceses against the administration's new rules? is this going to be a political problem for you? >> i think that the administration struck a common sense.rule here, that doesn't ask these institutions in any
